General Safety Instructions
The Product is supposed be installed by knowledgeable, skilled persons familiar with local
and/or international electrical codes and regulations. For your safety and prevention of
damage to the Product and other equipment connected to it, please read and observe
carefully the following safety instructions prior to installation and operation. Keep this manual
well for future reference.
•Do not disassemble or otherwise modify the Product. Such action may cause heat
generation, ignition, electronic shock, or other damages including human injury, and may
void your warranty.
•Keep the Product away from heat source, such as heater, heat dissipater, or engine casing.
•Do not insert foreign materials into any opening of the Product as it may cause the Product
to malfunction or burn out.
•To ensure proper functioning and prevent overheating of the Product, do not cover or
block the ventilation holes of the Product.
•Follow the installation instructions with the installation tools provided or recommended.
•The use or placement of the operation tools shall comply with the code of practice of such
tools to avoid short circuit of the Product.
•Cut off the power before inspection of the Product to avoid human injury or product

Precautions for Power Cables and Accessories
Use proper power source only. Make sure the supply voltage falls within the specified
range. The Product is designed to use 9-36V DC. Always check whether the Product is DC
powered before applying power.
Place the cables properly at places without extrusion hazards.
Use only approved antenna(s). Non-approved antenna(s) may produce spurious or
excessive RF transmitting power which may violate FCC limits.
Cleaning instructions:
•Power off the Product before cleaning
•Do not use spray detergent
•Clean with a damp cloth
•Do not try to clean exposed electronic components unless with a dust collector
Power off and contact Vantron technical support engineer in case of the following faults:
•The Product is damaged
•The temperature is excessively high
•Fault is still not solved after troubleshooting according to this manual
Do not use in combustible and explosive environment:
•Keep away from combustible and explosive environment
•Keep away from all energized circuits
•Unauthorized removal of the enclosure from the Product is not allowed
•Do not change components unless the power cable is unplugged
•In some cases, the Product may still have residual voltage even if the power cable is
unplugged. Therefore, it is a must to remove and fully discharge the Product before
replacement of the components.

1.1 Product Overview
Vantron GAPL is an X86-based edge computing gateway designed for industrial IoT
communication and application in various industrial scenarios. It is powered by a cost-
effective Intel® AtomTM Apollo Lake processor that optimizes the gateway performance
yet at very low power consumption. In addition, it delivers unparallel performance and
scalability, ensuring even the most challenging industrial applications run seamlessly.
The gateway adopts industrial design with guaranteed quality and reliability to offer an
ideal solution for IoT applications. It provides rich peripheral interfaces, and supports
remote management and remote upgrade to meet different requirements at industrial
sites. Customers have a wide range of choices for wireless communication, including
4G/5G cellular networks, WLAN, Bluetooth, LoRa and GPS. Moreover, the Software
Development Kit (SDK) is available for customers to create an ecosystem for their specific
use.

1.4.4 3-pin DC power jack
The GAPL gateway works with 12V ~ 36V DC supplied through the 3-pin DC power jack. It
is recommended to use a 12V/24V power adapter to power the gateway.

The single-layer device offers two serial ports (COM 1 & COM2), supporting

Before you proceed with further configuration of the Gateway, follow the steps below to
finish hardware connection.
1. Hold the Gateway firmly in the vertical direction;
2. Fit the sliding hooks of the DIN rail bracket into one side of the DIN rail;
3. Push down the top of the DIN rail bracket or use a tool to pull down the bottom to
compress the spring till the top of the bracket snaps into the two lugs to allow the
hooks to grip the edges of the DIN rail;
4. Swing the Gateway to ensure it is fastened on the DIN rail;

5. Unscrew the SIM slot cover on the right side of the Gateway;
6. Insert an activated SIM card into the SIM slot with the gold-colored contacts facing up;
7. Push the SIM card to secure it;
8. Place the cover back and tighten the screw;
9. Install the antennas, round to the Wi-Fi & BT, LoRa SMA connectors respectively (RF2,
RF4 & RF6), flat to the 4G/5G SMA connectors (RF1 & RF5), the magnetic sucker
antenna to the GPS SMA connector (RF3);
In case you have only one Wi-Fi & BT antenna or 4G/5G antenna, connect it to the
primary SMA connector (RF1/RF2) for better signal strength.
10. When necessary, connect one end of an Ethernet cable to either of the RJ45 Ethernet
jacks and the other to a switch or server;
The RJ45 Ethernet jacks work in WAN area by default.
11. Connect a mouse, a keyboard, and a monitor to the Gateway for better control of the
device;
12. Insert the 3-pin connector of the power cord to the power jack of the Gateway with the
pins properly positioned;
13. Plug the adapter to a power outlet that meets the supply voltage requirement (12V
to 36V DC) to turn on the Gateway.

3.1 About the System
Ubuntu is a Linux distribution and the Gateway is currently running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.
3.1.1 User and password
Users need to login to the system after system boot.
oDefault username: vantron
oPassword: vantron
You can use the “sudo su” command to get the root privilege in the system console
(password: vantron).
3.1.2 System information
1. Connect the Gateway with a monitor using an HDMI cable, or using an HDMI to VGA
adapter if necessary;
2. Connect a mouse and a keyboard via the USB ports of the Gateway;
3. Power on the Gateway and input the password to login the default user;
4. Click the solid triangle at the top right corner of the screen to unfold the basic settings
of the device, then click the Settings icon to access the system settings;
5. Click Details > About to check more information about the device system.
You can also access the system settings by clicking the applications menu at the bottom
left corner.
