WORWWIDE SERVICE STRATEGY
I. INTRODUCTION/PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Varian ProStar 200 Series consists of redesigned versions of the Star 9002/9012 and the Rainin
Model SD200/300 HPLC pumps. The ProStar 210/215 replaces the SD200/300 pumps, while the
ProStar 220/230/240 replaces the 9002/9012/9012Q Star Solvent Delivery System. All Series 200
Solvent Delivery Modules have the same footprint and are therefore "stackable" with other detectors
and autosamplers
in the ProStar HPLC Series. Operational specifications for all Solvent Delivery
Modules remain the same
as their predecessors.
On all
of the new designs, many of the components from their predecessors have been retained. The
mechanical designs
of all pumps remain basically the same. On the 220/230/240 Series, the purge
valve, pressure transducer and pulse dampener have been relocated to the right'side
of the module,
above the pump head, with the redesigned keypad and display now on the left side. The OEM Power
Supply assembly used on the 9002/9012 has been replaced with anew Varian-designed PCB
assembly. The unit has anewly designed Front Panel PCB; MVD and SBC PCB's remain the same
as the original.
The ProStar 210/215 now has amore compact footprint, is lower in height, and appearance
is
improved over the SD-200/300. The Pressure Module and Dynamic Mixer assemblies are now both
mounted internally on the left side of the SDM. They are easily removable and interchangeable with
other ProStar-compatible mixers and pressure modules. In addition, the Mixer now gets its power
directly from the 210/215 Power Supply PCB, which is also anew Varian-designed assembly.
Interface to the back panel I/O connections on all units has also changed slightly. The 210/215 Back
Panel PCB has been replaced with aremovable terminal strip-type
connector-all connections to the
I/O are via this terminal strip. The 220/230/240 still retains the two separate D-shell Sync
connections, but anew Rear Panel
110 PCB can be plugged into both D-shells simultaneously to
easily adapt bare-wire connections from other instrument modules.
II. SERVICE PHILOSOPHY
ProStar 200 Series Solvent Delivery Modules sold by Varian will be serviced by trained Varian
Customer Support Representatives at the Customer site, using the assembly exchange method.
All Service parts will be stocked at Chromatography Systems Parts and Supplies in Walnut Creek for
the U.S. and Canada, European Operations, Latin America and other International countries.
Stocking levels will be adjusted according to parts usage and instrument population. (See Appendix I
for Service Parts List).

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
ProStar 200 Series SDM's can be easily installed by the Customer to most LC systems. In the U.S.
and Canada, installation will be provided by aVarian Customer
Support Representative if the
Solvent
Deliver Module is purchased with acomplete LC system, and the Customer has paid for a
system installation. Installation can also
be purchased separately if the SDM is added to an existing
LC system. In European countries, installation is normally included in the purchase price.
A. Installation by aVarian Customer Support Representative includes the following:
1. Verification of delivered items for completeness and abse.nce of shipping damage.
2. Setup and connection
of the Solvent Deliver Module to a new or existing HPLC
System per Installation Qualification Checklist.
3. Demonstration
of proper operational parameters and explanation of recommended
maintenance to the Customer.
B. Installation to non-Varian equipment,
or any assembly of special cabling for external control
is
not included as part of normal installation. Any such interfacing is considered as billable
service and should be charged at regular service rates,
or as directed by Service Management.
C.
ProStar Solvent Delivery Modules found to be DOA (dead on arrival) at the time of
installation should be returned to Walnut Creek Chromatography Systems for replacement.
Exceptions to this policy would be when the module can
be easily repaired onsite, with
minimum downtime, and when agreed to by the Customer. To initiate the replacement
process, the area Service
Manager should complete and return, via FAX, a CSB Warranty
Replacement
Form to the Tech. Services Mgr. for approval.
WARRANTY
A. For details regarding Warranty, see the Varian analytical Instrument warranty, appendix B, at
the
end of this Service Strategy ..
B. The following services are available to Customers under Warranty:
1. Technical assistance from trained Technical Support Representatives via telephone
from Chromatography Systems Technical Services,
or the local Service Office in
European and 0.1. countries.
2. Instrument repair
or replacement of any Warranted items as outlined in Appendix B.
V. OUT-OF-WARRANTY SERVICE
ProStar 200 Series SDM's are designed for mInImum downtime and most repairs can be
accomplished on-site. Outside
of aService Contract, the following service options are available:
1. On-site billable service by Varian Customer Support Representatives is available at
prevailing service and travel rates, plus parts.
•2. The
Customer may purchase parts from, or exchange parts with, their local Varian Parts and
Supplies center and perform the actual repair himself.
3. In some cases, repair at aVarian office
can be arranged through the local Customer Support
Representative
or Service Management.

VI. SERVICE CONTRACTS OR EXTENDED WARRANTY
•A. Anumber
of options are available for Extended Warranty and/or Service Contracts. For
specific information on these options, please contact Varian Customer support or the local
Varian Field Office
B. In all Varian Extended Warranties and Service Contracts, the Customer has specific
responsibilities. These responsibilities consist
of (but are not limited to) the following:
1. Place service requests through the appropriate country or local service office.
2. Perform normal recommended operator maintenance functions as described in the Operator's
Manual.
3. Assist the Technical Services Representative
or local Customer Support
Representative in performing diagnostic functions by phone contact and executing
minor repair actions
if recommended.
4. Protect the instrument from internal and external corrosion, misuse, and abuse.
VII. SERVICE AND REPAIR CONCEPT
A. All Service requests in the U.S. should be routed through the HPLC Technical Services
Hotline at 1-800-FOR-HPLC (Option 3). Outside
of the U.S., service requests should be
directed to the local Service office.

The Assembly Exchange Concept applies.
Service will be restricted to the performance
of the instrument's electronic and mechanical
hardware, and clarification
of operational problems. Built-in instrument diagnostic tests and
standard troubleshooting techniques will be the primary source
of determining instrument
malfunctions. If it is determined that the Customer's application is at fault, the Customer
Support Representative may contact aService Support Chemist to assist the Customer in
solving his application problem.
VIII. SERVICE TRAINING
Service training for this product has already been incorporated into the Varian HPLC Service
Training program. It is included in the Intermediate LC Training courses scheduled throughout the
year. Consult the Technical Services Training Catalog and Training Schedules for more information.'
IX. SERVICE SUPPORT
A. Chromatography Systems Technical Services will assist Varian Customer Support
Representatives in solving difficult problems and provide support to all Service Advisors.
•B. In the U.S., all Customer inquiries are supported through
LC Technical Services in Walnut
Creek and
Woburn. For European Operations, Latin America and Other International,
Customer Support will be provided through the country's Service Management.

Hardware Products
All analytical instruments sold by Varian are warranted
to
be free from defects in material and workmanship
for the periods specified and
in accordance with the
terms
on the face of Varian's quotation or as otherwise
agreed upon
in writing between Varian and the
Customer. The warranty period begins
on the date of
shipment from Varian to the original Customer.
However, where installation
is paid for by the Customer
or included
in the purchase price, the warranty period
begins upon completion of installation.
If the Customer
schedules installation to start later than 30 days after
delivery or if such delay is caused through the
Customer's inability to provide adequate facilities or
utilities or through failure to comply with Varian's
reasonable pre-installation instructions or through
other omissions by Customer, then the warranty period
starts
on the 31 st dayfrom date of shipment.
Moreover Varian will charge the Customer for labor
and other expenses involved
in making multiple or
follow-up installation service calls.
Software Products
Where software is provided within the frame of a
license agreement concluded between the Customer
and Varian, any warranty shall be strictly
in accordance
with the terms of such agreement.
In the absence of alicense agreement and unless an
alternate warranty period
is agreed upon in writing
between Varian and the Customer, the warranty period
is as specified on the face of Varian's quotation. Varian
warrants such software products, if used with and
properly installed on Varian hardware or other
hardware as specified by Varian to perform as
described
in the accompanying Operator's Manual and
to
be substantially free of those defects which cause
failure to execute respective programming instructions;
however, Varian does not warrant uninterrupted or
error-free operation.
Remedies
The sole and exclusive remedy under hardware
warranty shall be repair of instrument malfunctions
which in Varian's opinion are due ortraceable to
defects
in original materials or workmanship or, at
Varian's option, replacement of the respective
defective parts, provided that Varian may as an
alternative elect to refund an equitable portion of the
purchase price of the instrument or accessory.
Repair or replacement under warranty does not extend
the original warranty period.
Repair or replacement under warranty claims shall be
made
in Varian's sole discretion either by sending a
Customer Support Representative to the site or by
authorizing the Customer to return the defective
accessory or instrument to Varian or to send it to a
designated service facility. The Customer shall be
responsible for loss or damage
in transit and shall
pr~pay shipping cost. Varian will return the accessory
or Instrument to the Customer prepaid and insured.
Claims for loss or damage
in transit shall be filed by
the Customer. To correct software operation
anomalies, Varian will issue software revisions where
such revisions exist and where,
in Varian's opinion this
is the most efficient remedy. '
Limitation of Warranty
This warranty does not cover software supplied by
the Customer, equipment and software warranted by
~nother manufacturer or replacement of expendable
Items and those of limited life, such as but not limited
to: Filters, glassware, instrument status lamps, source
lamp~, septa, columns, fuses, chart paper and ink,
nebulizers, flow cells, pistons, seals, fittings, valves,
burners" sample tubes, probe inserts, print heads,
glass lined tubing, pipe and tube fittings, variable
temperature dewars, transfer lines, flexible discs,
magnetic tape cassettes, electron multipliers
filaments, vacuum gaskets, seats and all parts
exposed to samples and mobile phases.
This warranty shall be void in the event of accident
abuse,.
alteratio~, misuse, neglect, breakage, improp~r
oper~~lon. or maintenance, unauthorized or improper
modifications or tampering, use
in an unsuitable
physical environm'ent, use with amarginal power
supply or use with other inadequate facilities or utilities.
Reasonable care must be used to avoid hazards.
This warranty is expressly in lieu of and excludes
all other express
or implied warranties, including
but not limited to warranties of merchantability and
of fitness for particular purpose, use or
application, and all other obligations or liabilities
on the part of Varian, unless such other
warranties, obligations or liabilities are expressly
agreed
to in writing by Varian.
Limitation of Remedies and Liability
The remedies provided herein are the sole and
exclusive remedies
of the Customer. In no case
will Varian be liable for incidental or consequential
damages,
loss of use, loss of production or any
other
loss incurred.

espare Parts Availability
It is the policy of Varian to provide operational spare parts for any instrument and major accessory for aperiod of five (5)
years after shipment of the final production
run of that instrument. Spare parts will be available after this five (5) year
period but on
an as availa.ble basis. Operational spare parts are defined as those individual electrical or mechanical parts
that are susceptible to failure during their normal operation. Examples include relays, lamps, temperature probes, detector
elements, motors, etc. Sheet metal parts, structural members or assemblies and castings, printed circuit boards, and
functional modules are normally capable of being rebuilt to like-new condition throughout their useful life and therefore will
be supplied only
on an as available basis after the final production run of the instrument.
Service Availability
Varian provides avariety of services to support its customers after warranty expiration. Repair service can be provided by
attractively priced service contracts or
on atime and material basis. Technical support and training can be provided by
qualified personnel on both acontractual or as-needed
basj~,:.

Pre-Installation
Instructions
IntroductionThe ProStar Series from Varian Chromatography Systems consists of anew line of
HPLC Solvent Delivery Modules, Detectors and AutoSamplers which can be configured to
create complete, stackable Analytical, Semiprep or Preparative HPLC systems. ProStar
LC modules can also be purchased individually to add to any existing Varian (or other
manufacturer's) system.
If your system is to be installed by aqualified Varian Customer Service or Sales
Representative, it
is preferred that the boxes remain unopened until your Varian
Representative arrives onsite.
Unpacking and Inspection
Before unpacking, carefully inspect the exterior of all the shipping cartons for evidence of
any damage occurring during shipment. Inspect for:
•Water stains
•Cuts, punctures, or deep indentations
in the container
•Crushed corners or excessively abraded edges
If any of the above conditions are evident in either of the shipping cartons, do not proceed
with unpacking of the instrument but report the condition(s) to the Carrier at time of
receipt and to:

Systems are shipped FOB Walnut Creek, California, USA, or FOB Destination. The
manner of shipment determines who has responsibility for filing aclaim against the carrier
if the system
is damaged in transit. Most systems are shipped FOB Walnut Creek and in
this instance any damages incurred in shipment are the responsibility of the purchaser
and the carrier. However, Varian will assist with claims filing and (billable) repairs if
necessary.
If the system is shipped FOB Destination, Varian will file aclaim against the carrier. Note,
however, that Varian will not accept liability for damage if materials are received with
obvious damage and no exceptions are noted on the receiving documents. Outside of the
U.S.A., notify the nearest International Sales Office.
If none of the conditions listed above are evident after inspecting the shipping carton,
place the shipping container
on the floor near the installation site.

Before proceeding, you should make sure that the site to be used for installation has the
required power
and meets the space requirements described in these instructions.
•
&WARNING
Some of the HPLC modules in this system may weigh in excess of 40
pounds. Use proper lifting techniques to avoid possible personal injury
or damage to the instrument.
•
Each of your ProStar LC Modules will have shipped with an Operation Manual. Please
locate and read the Installation Section
of each manual as it contains detailed information
needed to install your
LC system. Should you experience difficulties during installation,
Varian Customer Support personnel will
be available to assist you by telephone. This
assistance
is provided with the purchase of ProStar LC Systems.
If Varian Customer Support installs your instrument, the Customer Support
Representative may
run achromatogram using atest column and sample. Be sure the
conditions are recorded
on the chromatogram. Store the chromatogram for future use in
analyzing possible chromatographic problems.
Power Requirements
Aseparate circuit, free of equipment with intermittent start/stop cycles and heavy
starting currentdemands, is required for each ProStar LC system.
Note: Single-phase
power only. (120V, 101V)
Ameasured GROUND to NEUTRAL potential of greater than 3volts ac or dc indicates
grounding problems that may need correction before connecting an instrument module to
the power source. Any power source suspected of having noise problems should be
evaluated with arecording-type power line monitor prior to being used for operating
instruments.
&CAUTION
All phases of the installation site preparation must conform to local safety,
electrical, and building codes. These codes take precedence over any
recommendations in these instructions, and compliance to them is the
responsibility of the customer.
Power cords for North America and other 120V, 60 Hz, applications are terminated in a3-
prong plug that requires amatching 120 Vac receptacle as shown
in Figure 1.
Replacement or substitution of the power plug requires strict compliance with power cord
color coding as shown
in Figure 1.
NOTE: Potential between neutral and
ground should not exceed 3 volts.

•Electrical Source Requirements
Each ProStar instrument module requires aclean 50 or 60 Hz power source capable of
providing up
to:
101 Vac ±10%, 50 or 60 Hz ± 2% (25 Amps, 2.5 Kilowatts)
120 Vac ±10%,60 Hz ±
2% (20 Amps, 2.4 Kilowatts)
230 Vac ±15%,
50 Hz ± 2% (10 Amps, 2.3 Kilowatts)
Operation of aProStar HPLC system near the low limit of the permissible line voltage may
induce problems such
as loss of instrument display, RAM/ROM or other power loss
messages, and other random instrument problems.
Care must
be taken to ensure that sources of radio frequency interference (RFI) and
electromagnetic interference (EMI) are not placed
on the same power line, or share the
same ground plane, since this can degrade the performance of the LC. Equipment such
as motors, solenoids, fluorescent light fixtures, and radio communication transmitters
should be isolated from the instrument and connecting cables as much as possible.

Environmental Considerations
Keeping with safe laboratory practices, the HPLC system should not be exposed to
corrosive chemicals or gases. It should not
be exposed .to excessive dust/particulate
accumulation. For optimum performance, HPLC systems should not be exposed to the
direct venting of air conditioners, heaters, furnaces, or fans.

Space Requirements
Allow sufficient bench space to permit installation of recorders, workstations, and other
peripheral LC equipment. Table 2lists the physical dimensions and weights of each
ProStar HPLC module, and the peripheral instruments that may be installed near
it. Allow
at least two inches of space at the sides, and six inches at the rear of the LC system to
permit free air circulation. Power cord, signal output, and I/O connectors are located at
the rear of the Instrument. Power switches are located on the front panel
on most
modules, but are generally
on the rear panel for autosamplers.

Mobile Phase Solvents, Columns and Other Installation Requirements
Installation by aVarian Customer Service or Sales Representative will normally include a
basic test of the systems functionality. To run achromatogram will require the installation
of an analytical or "test" column, atest sample, and specific mobile phases.
Mobile phase solvents required for installation are methanol, de-ionized water, and
isopropyl alcohol. All solvents should be pure HPLC-grade, and degassing apparatus
should be available, if required.
An analytical reverse-phase C18 column is also required to run atest sample. Varian
has anumber of columns available to fill this need. An example would be aMicrosorb (or
Microsorb-MV) C18 (ODS) column. Column descriptions, specifications, and
recommendations can be found in the Varian HPLC Parts and Supplies Catalog, available
on request from Customer Service or any Varian office.
In addition to the above, interconnect tubing will be required to complete installation of
your system. Most of this tubing is included in the accessory kits of specific LC
instrument modules. Additional tubing (PEEK or Stainless Steel) may be required for
installation of special valving, or installation of modules to existing HPLC systems.
For most analytical HPLC systems (flow rates up to 10 mUmin), 1/16" tubing with an
internal diameter (ID) of 0.010 to 0.020" can be used throughout. However, 0.010" 10 or
smaller should always be used downstream of the sample injector or autosampler to
prevent peak broadening. In addition, tubing lengths should always be kept to a
minimum.
Semiprep and Preparative systems have other requirements/limitations with regard to
interconnect tubing. Typically, asystem using flow rates up to 200 mUmin will require
1/16" tubing with an internal diameter as high as 0.040". On these systems, tubing 10
used after the injector/autosampler should be -0.010" smaller than tubing used in the rest
of the system. On Prep systems, 1/8" tubing (0.062" or 0.080" ID) is typically used
throughout. Always consult the instrument module Operator's Manual for specific
recommendations.

Gas Requirements
Unless your system is equipped with apneumatically controlled injector valve, or a
helium-sparging unit, there are no gas requirements for the ProStar LC system. For gas
requirements on these other devices, consult the Operation Manual or other
documentation received with the particular device.
Proper Handling of Gas Cylinders
Always observe safe laboratory practice in the transportation, storage, and usage of gas
cylinders under high pressure.
•Never move acylinder with aregulator installed. Make sure safety cap
is in place
over valve when transporting cylinder.
• Always chain or strap cylinders
in the laboratory and in storage.
•Always use cylinder condition labels to show whether tank is FULL,
IN USE, or
EMPTY.
• Always leave at least 100 psig residual gas
in adepleted cylinder. Always store in
empty tank storage area with tank valve closed. Emptycylinders should be clearly
marked as such and dated.
•Do not expose cylinders to temperatures above 125°F (50°C).

Introduction
The Models 210 and 215 Solvent Delievery Systems were intended to be replacements for the
Rainin Models SD-200 and 300, except that they were to be re-packaged to conform to the
Industrial design requirements that were agreed upon for the Varianized ProStar family of L C
Modules. During the project, adecision was made, essentially by the L C Product Line Team,
to design
and build apower supply to replace the purchased assembly used in the Rainin
product. Since the PCB had to be positioned vertically, it had to be modified to be narrower. The
heat sink configuration and it's capability for effective thermal transfer, were modified, so
extensive testing of this new layout was required. Other cost saving ideas, such as the phase out
of the Rear Panel Interface PCB
were implemented.
