1. Introduction

The DVM830L is a compact pocket-sized multi-meter with a 3 1/2 digit LCD for
measuring AC and DC voltages, DC currents, resistance, transistors and diodes.
Full overload protection is provided. It is the ideal instrument for hobbyists, for
use in the field, for laboratories and workshops and for domestic applications.
1.1 Warning
Treat this device with the utmost caution as improper use may result in injury or
death. In addition to normal safety precautions for dealing with electrical
circuits, the user should also follow the safety precautions suggested in this
manual to the letter. Do not use this device if you are unfamiliar with electrical
circuits and testing procedures.
This device is not designed for commercial or industrial use.
Refer to the Velleman® Service and Quality Warranty on the last pages of
this manual.
1.2 Safety Precautions
This multi-meter is designed to ensure the safest operation possible.
Nevertheless, safe operation depends on you, the operator. Follow these simple
safety rules:
•Never apply a voltage to the multi-meter that exceeds 500VDC or 500VAC
rms between an input jack and ground.
•Use extreme caution when working with voltages above 60VDC or 30VAC
rms.
•Always discharge the filter capacitors in the power supply circuit under test
before attaching the test leads.
•Never connect a voltage source to the DVM830L when the device is in the
DCA, ACA, resistance or continuity mode.
•Always turn off the power and disconnect the test leads before replacing the
battery or fuse.
•Never operate the multi-meter unless the battery cover is in place and fully
closed.
•When carrying out measurements on TV's or switching power circuits, always
remember that there may be high amplitude voltage pulses at test points
which may damage the meter.

1.3 Maintenance
Your DVM830L is the result of superior design and craftsmanship. The following
suggestions will help you keep your multi-meter in perfect working order:
•Keep the multi-meter dry. Wipe it immediately if it gets wet.
•Use and store the multi-meter under normal temperatures. Extreme
temperatures may shorten the life of the device or damage the battery.
•Handle the multi-meter with care. Dropping it may damage the circuit boards
or the case and may lead to malfunction.
•Replace an old or weak battery with a fresh one of the required size and type.
•Remove the battery during long periods of inactivity. This will protect the
multi-meter from possible leakage.
•Disconnect the test probes before opening the multi-meter.
•Replace a blown fuse with a new one of the same size and type.
Fuse : F 0.5A/250V (resettable ) – F 10A/250V
•Refrain from using this device if anomalies are detected. Do not try to repair
the device yourself: consult authorised personnel.
•Do not use the multi-meter unless the back cover is in place and fully
fastened.
•Use a damp cloth moistened with a mild detergent for cleaning purposes. Do
not use solvents or abrasive cleansing agents or solvents.
2. Description of the Front Panel
Refer to the illustrations on page 2 of this manual.
2.1 DISPLAY
3 1/2 digit display with 7 segments. Height: 0.5" (12.7mm)
2.2 FUNCTION AND RANGE SWITCH
Select the desired function and range. It is also used to activate the device.
Place the switch in the "OFF" position when the device is not in use in order
to extend the life of your battery.
2.3 "10A" JACK
Plug in the connector for the red (+) test lead for all your 10A-
measurements.
2.4 "VΩmA" JACK
Plug in the connector for the red (+) test lead for all voltage, resistance and
current measurements (with the exception of 10A-measurements).
2.5 "Common" JACK
Plug in the connector for the black (-) test lead.
3. Operating instructions
WARNING
1) Do not measure voltages that exceed the earthing level by more than 500V in
order to avoid the risk of electroshocks or damage to the instrument.
2) Verify whether the insulation of all test leads, probes and connectors is intact
prior to activating the device.
3.1 DC Voltage Measurements
1) Connect the red test lead to the "VΩmA" jack and the black lead to the "COM"
jack.
2) Place the RANGE switch in the appropriate VDC position. Set the switch to the
highest range and work your way down if the voltage range is unknown
beforehand.
3) Connect the test leads to the device or circuit to be measured.
4) Activate the device or circuit to be measured. Both the voltage value and the
polarity will be displayed.

3.2. AC Voltage Measurements
1) Connect the red test lead to the "VΩmA" jack and the black lead to the "COM"
jack.
2) Place the RANGE switch in the appropriate VAC position.
3) Connect the test leads to the device or circuit to be tested.
4) The voltage value will appear on the display.
3.3. DC Current Measurements
1) Connect the red test lead to the "VΩmA" jack and the black lead to the "COM"
jack. (Connect the red test lead to the "10A"-jack for measurements between
200mA and 10A).
2) Place the RANGE switch in the appropriate ADC position.
3) Open the circuit to be measured and connect the test leads IN SERIES with
the load of which the current is to be measured.
4) Read the current value on the display.
3.4. Resistance Measurements
1) Connect the red test lead to the "VΩmA" jack and the black lead to the "COM"
jack.
2) Place the RANGE switch in the appropriate Ωposition.
3) If the resistance being measured is connected to a circuit: disconnect the
power and discharge all capacitors prior to measurement.
4) Connect the test leads to the circuit to be measured.
5) Read the resistance value on the display.
3.5. Diode Measurements
1) Connect the red test lead to the "VΩmA" jack and the black lead to the "COM"
jack.
2) Set the RANGE switch to the position.
3) Connect the red test lead to the anode and the black test lead to the cathode
of the diode to be measured.
4) The forward voltage drop will be displayed in mV. "1" will be displayed if the
polarity of the diode is reversed.
3.6. Transistor hFE Measurements
1) Connect the black test lead (-) to the "COM" jack and the red test lead (+) to
the "mA" jack.
2) Select the hFE-range with the Range switch.
3) Determine whether the transistor is of the NPN- or PNP-type and locate the
emitter, the base and the collector. Insert the leads into the proper holes in
the included transistor socket.
4) Connect the black test lead (-) to the "COM" terminal and the red test lead
(+) to the other terminal of the transistor socket.
5) The display will show the approximate hFE-value at the moment of testing.
Base current 10µA, Vce 2.8V.

5.Replacing the battery and the fuse
The " " symbol appears when the battery needs to be replaced. Proceed as
follows:
1. Disconnect the test leads from all live sources, switch off the device and
remove the test leads from the input terminals BEFORE opening the housing.
This is necessary in order to avoid the risk of electroshocks.
2. Remove the screws in the back cover and retrieve the battery.
3. Insert 2 new AAA-batteries (LR03C).
4. Replace the cover and tighten the screws.
The fuse rarely needs to be replaced and a blown fuse is nearly always due to
an error on behalf of the operator. Open the housing (see above) and replace
the blown fuse with an identical one: F500mA/250V – F10A/250V.
Use this device with original accessories only. Velleman nv cannot be
held responsible in the event of damage or injury resulted from
(incorrect) use of this device.

De DVM830L is een compacte multimeter met een 3 ½ digit lcd. Met dit
apparaat kunt u AC- en DC-spanning, DC-stroom, weerstanden, diodes en
transistors meten. Het apparaat is beveiligd tegen overbelasting en is ideaal
voor hobbyisten, praktijkoefeningen, wetenschappelijk onderzoek, ateliers en
gebruik bij u thuis.

1.1. Waarschuwing
Wees zeer voorzichtig wanneer u het apparaat gebruikt: onvoorzichtigheid kan
leiden tot ernstige of zelfs fatale kwetsuren. Behalve de veiligheidsmaatregelen
die gangbaar zijn bij het werken met stroomkringen, moet u ook de
voorschriften volgen die u in deze handleiding vindt. Gebruik dit apparaat niet
indien u niets af weet van stroomkringen en testprocedures.
Dit apparaat is niet geschikt voor commercieel of industrieel gebruik.
Raadpleeg de Velleman®service- en kwaliteitsgarantie achteraan deze
handleiding.
1.2. Veiligheidsvoorschriften
Deze multimeter werd ontworpen met veiligheid in het achterhoofd. Niettemin
hangt de veilige bediening van de multimeter vooral af van u, de gebruiker. Als
u deze eenvoudige veiligheidsregels respecteert, bent u al een heel eind op de
goede weg :
•Meet nooit spanningen die 500 VDC of 500 VAC rms tussen de ingangsbus en
de aarde overschrijden.
•Wees uiterst voorzichtig wanneer u spanningen meet van meer dan 60 VDC
of 30 VAC rms.
•Ontlaad altijd de condensatoren van de voedingsbron die u wilt testen vóór u
de meetsnoeren aanbrengt.
•U mag een spanningsbron niet met de meter verbinden wanneer het toestel
zich in stroom-, weerstands- of continuïteitsmode bevindt.
•Schakel de meter altijd uit en verwijder de meetsnoeren vóór u de batterij of
de zekering vervangt.
•Gebruik de multimeter nooit met open batterijdeksel.
•Wees voorzichtig bij metingen op tv's of schakelende voedingen. Onthoud dat
er zich aan de testpunten spanningspieken kunnen voordoen die de meter
kunnen beschadigen.
1.3. Onderhoud
Uw DVM830L is het resultaat van superieur vakmanschap. De volgende
suggesties zullen u helpen om uw multimeter bedrijfsklaar te houden :
•Droog het apparaat onmiddellijk af indien het nat wordt.
•Gebruik en bewaar de multimeter onder normale temperaturen. Extreme
temperaturen verkorten de levensduur van uw multimeter en kunnen het
apparaat beschadigen.
•Laat de multimeter niet vallen. Dit kan immers defecten veroorzaken of
leiden tot beschadiging van de PCB's of van de behuizing.
•Vervang een oude of slechte batterij door een nieuwe batterij van het
vereiste type en afmetingen.
Verwijder de batterij indien u het toestel gedurende lange tijd niet gebruikt.
Zo beschermt u uw multimeter tegen lekken.
•Ontkoppel alle meetsnoeren vóór u de multimeter opent.
•Vervang een gesprongen zekering door een nieuw, identiek exemplaar.
Zekering: F0,5 A/250 V (herstelbaar) – F10 A/250 V.
•Gebruik dit toestel niet indien het niet naar behoren functioneert. Probeer de
DVM830L niet zelf te repareren: raadpleeg bevoegd personeel.
•Gebruik de multimeter nooit met open batterijdeksel.
•Gebruik een doek bevochtigd met een milde detergent om het apparaat te
reinigen. Gebruik nooit solventen of schuurmiddelen.

2. Beschrijving van het frontpaneel
Raadpleeg de illustraties op pagina 2 van deze handleiding.
2.1 DISPLAY
3 1/2 digit lcd met 7 segmenten. Hoogte: 12,7 mm.
2.2 FUNCTIE- en BEREIKSCHAKELAAR
Met deze schakelaar activeert u het toestel en kunt u het bereik en de functie
instellen. Plaats de schakelaar in de "OFF"-stand wanneer u het apparaat niet
gebruikt. Zo verhoogt u de levensduur van de batterij.
2.3 "10A" AANSLUITING
Plug de stekker in van het rode (+) meetsnoer voor al uw 10A-metingen.
2.4 "VΩmA" AANSLUITING
Plug de stekker in van het rode (+) meetsnoer om spanning, weerstand en
stroom te meten (uitgez. stroom van 10 A).
2.5 "Common" AANSLUITING
Plug de stekker in van het zwarte (-) meetsnoer.
3. Gebruik
WAARSCHUWING
1) Meet geen spanningen die het aardingsniveau met meer dan 500 V
overschrijden. Zo wordt elk risico op verwondingen of beschadiging van het
toestel vermeden.
2) Controleer de isolatie van alle meetsnoeren, meetpennen en connectors
VOOR u het toestel gebruikt.
3.1. Gelijkspanning meten
1) Verbind het rode meetsnoer met de "VΩmA"-aansluiting en het zwarte
meetsnoer met de "COM"-aansluiting.
2) Plaats de BEREIK-schakelaar in de gewenste VDC-stand. Plaats de schakelaar
in de hoogste stand en verminder geleidelijk indien u het juiste bereik niet op
voorhand kent.
3) Verbind de meetsnoeren met het toestel of het circuit dat u wilt testen.
4) Activeer het toestel of het circuit dat u wilt testen. Zowel de aanwezige
spanning als de polariteit verschijnen op de display.
3.2. Wisselspanning meten
1) Verbind het rode meetsnoer met de "VΩmA"-aansluiting en het zwarte
meetsnoer met de "COM"-aansluiting.
2) Plaats de BEREIK-schakelaar in de gewenste VAC-stand.
3) Verbind de meetsnoeren met het toestel of het circuit dat u wilt testen.
4) De gemeten waarde verschijnt op de display.
3.3. Gelijkstroom meten
1) Verbind het rode meetsnoer met de "VΩmA"-aansluiting en het zwarte
meetsnoer met de "COM"-aansluiting. (Voor metingen van 200 mA tot 10 A
moet u het rode meetsnoer verbinden met de "10A"-aansluiting).
2) Plaats de BEREIK-schakelaar in de gewenste ADC-stand.
3) Open het circuit dat u wilt testen en schakel de meetsnoeren IN SERIE met
de last waarvan u de stroom wilt meten.
4) De gemeten waarde verschijnt op de display.
3.4. Weerstand meten
1) Verbind het rode meetsnoer met de "VΩmA"-aansluiting en het zwarte
meetsnoer met de "COM"-aansluiting.
2) Plaats de BEREIK-schakelaar in de gewenste Ω-stand.
3) Indien de weerstand in kwestie verbonden is met een circuit : ontkoppel de
voedingsspanning en ontlaad alle condensatoren voordat u de metingen uitvoert.

4) Verbind de meetsnoeren met het circuit dat u wilt testen.
5) De gemeten weerstand verschijnt op de display.
3.5. Diodes meten
1) Verbind het rode meetsnoer met de "VΩmA"-aansluiting en het zwarte
meetsnoer met de "COM"-aansluiting.
2) Plaats de BEREIK-schakelaar in de -stand.
3) Verbind het rode meetsnoer met de anode en het zwarte meetsnoer met de
kathode van de diode die u wilt testen.
4) De voorwaartse spanningsval verschijnt op de display en wordt uitgedrukt in mV.
"1" verschijnt op de display indien de polariteit van de diode wordt omgekeerd.
3.6. Transistortest hFE
1) Verbind het zwarte meetsnoer (-) met de "COM"-jack en het rode meetsnoer
(+) met de "mA"-jack.
2) Selecteer het hFE-bereik met de FUNCTIE-schakelaar.
3) Controleer om welk type transistor het gaat (NPN of PNP) en lokaliseer de
basis, de emittor en de collector. Stop de aansluitingen van de transistor in
de overeenkomstige aansluitingen van het meegeleverde transistorvoetje.
4) Verbind het zwarte meetsnoer (-) met de "COM"-klem en het rode meetsnoer
(+) met de andere klem op het transistorvoetje.
5) De gemeten versterkingsfactor (hFE-waarde) verschijnt op de lcd-display.
Basisstroom 10µA, Vce 2,8 V.
