Installation Instructions
1. Check the accessories with your Maxelerate. Please contact WiebeTech if any items are missing or damaged.
The box should contain:
Maxelerate unit 1
AC adapter & power cord 1
1394a (FireWire 400) cable 1
USB cable 1
Screws (for MAX-0) 8
Manual and Warranty information (on CD)
2. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the parts of your new Maxelerate. This will aid you in the
remaining steps. If you purchased your Maxelerate with a drive pre-installed, you may skip ahead to the section on
connecting the unit to your computer.

3. Configure the jumpers on your 3.5” IDE hard drive. The drive must be set to the Master setting. Consult the
instructions for your drive (some drives display configuration information on the drive’s label). A few drives have both
“Master with Slave present” and “Master without Slave” options. Choose the latter in this case. In rare cases, if the
Master setting does not work then try Cable Select.

4. Remove the bottom panel. Turn the Maxelerate over so the bottom side is facing up and remove the unit from
the bag. Please note that the bottom panel is not attached to the Maxelerate unit and is loose inside the bag. The
package contains a total of 8 screws, 4 for fixing the bottom panel to the enclosure, and 4 for securing the drive.
Remove the enclosure and bottom panel from the bag.
5. Connect the cables to the hard drive. Locate the IDE cable inside the Maxelerate and insert the free end into
the hard drive. The drive’s IDE pins can be easily bent, so be careful when connecting the cable.

Locate the power cable and insert the plug into the hard drive. It will only fit one way.
6. Rest the drive inside the Maxelerate case on top of the folded IDE and power cables. Ensure that the control
board side of the hard drive is facing up. When properly positioned, the screw holes in the hard drive will be facing
up, ready for alignment with the corresponding openings in the bottom panel.
7. Secure the bottom panel. Carefully align the openings in the bottom panel with the screw holes in the hard
drive, and the screw holes in the body of the enclosure. Fasten the drive to the bottom panel first, and then fasten the
bottom panel to the body with the included screws.
The Maxelerate is now assembled and ready for connection to a computer.

Connecting the Maxelerate to a Computer
The Maxelerate can be connected to a computer via USB 2.0 and/or FireWire 400.
Connection via USB 2.0
1. Connect the AC/DC power adapter.

2. Insert the USB type B connector into the type B port on the Maxelerate, and the USB type A connector into a type
A port on the computer.

3. Turn the power switch to the “ON” position; the blue LED indicator on the front of the Maxelerate will be active.

The Maxelerate is now ready for use via USB 2.0 connection.
Note: When the Maxelerate is connected via USB 2.0 only, the 1394a ports are not available to the host.
LED Indicator
The Maxelerate can be self-powered, or bus-powered via the USB upstream cable. If the Maxelerate is connected as
a USB hard drive, sufficient power will be provided for hard drive and hub functions, and the LED indicator will be
“on”. The amount of bus power supplied by the host, however, may not be sufficient for devices connected to the hub
portion of the Maxelerate. Many devices draw more power and require the use of an AC adapter. Additionally, when

connected to some hosts, the LED indicator may be on when both host and Maxelerate are powered off, but still
connected to the host via the USB cable, if the host is designed to supply power initiatively.
The following table details the status of the LED indicator under various operating scenarios.

Note: When the Maxelerate is connected via FireWire only, the 2 USB ports are not available to the host.

LED Indicator
The Maxelerate can be self-powered, or bus-powered via FireWire cable. If the Maxelerate is connected as a
FireWire hard drive, sufficient power will be provided for hard drive and repeater functions, and the LED indicator will
be “on”. The amount of bus power supplied by the host, however, may not be sufficient for devices connected to the
repeater portion of the Maxelerate. Many devices draw more power and require the use of an AC adapter.
Additionally, when connected to some hosts, the LED indicator may be on when both host and Maxelerate are
powered off, but still connected to the host via FireWire, if the host is designed to supply power initiatively.
The following table details the status of the LED indicator under various operating scenarios.

Note: When the Maxelerate is connected via both FireWire and USB 2.0, the FireWire repeater and USB 2.0 hub
functionalities are supported and the Maxelerate acts as a FireWire hard drive.

FOR HOME OR OFFICE USE
In the event that you experience Radio Frequency Interference, you should take the following steps to resolve the problem:
1) Ensure that the bottom plate and case of your attached drive is grounded, either to the Maxelerate case or to an Earth ground.
2) Use a FireWire cable with RFI reducing ferrites on each end.
3) Use a power supply with an RFI reducing ferrite approximately 5 inches from the DC plug.
