Safety Platform Walker
The Whitney Safety Platform Walker is a conventional, electrically operated walker that is enhanced
with a power rise function. Not only does it act as a walker, it also promotes mobility and safety with
its unique power rise function and safety harness.
The Whitney can be used by anyone who regularly uses a walker. The user can remain active while
the power rise function is in use.
The Whitney consists of a walker and its associated harness and straps. The harness is secured to
the two attachment straps (one on each side), which are in turn attached to the walker.
When the patient stands the electric power rise function is employed and the smart attachment
reduces the distance between the patient and the walker until the patient is standing upright.
The Whitney has an electrically driven base width adjustment, which makes it easier to get closer to
the user.
The harness is available in different sizes (M, L) and has two rear straps. NOTE: that the lower part
of the harness attached around the patient’s bottom can be opened as required (i.e. toileting).
Intended for use in acute care, long-term care and outpatient care. It is not
recommended for use in a shower.
Prior to using the Whitney the patient must be assessed by a qualified professional to
determine the suitability of using it with that patient.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS FOR ALL PROCEDURES:
1. The Whitney Walker is to be used ONLY on level surfaces.
2. ALWAYS lock the wheels while lifting and lowering the patient.
3. Prior to using the Whitney Walker, the patient must be assessed by a qualified professional to
determine the suitability of using the Whitney Walker with that patient.
4. Never leave the patient unattended while using the Whitney Walker.
5. Never exceed the safe working load.
6. Warranty applies only if repairs or alterations are done by an authorized technician.
CLEANING AND DISINFECTION:
1. Do not power wash the equipment.
2. Painted and plastic surfaces (other than electronics): For cleaning and disinfection, use a
quaternary or bleach-based solution on painted and plastic surfaces.
3. Electronics: Ensure actuators are at their minimum stroke before washing. Organic solvents
like halogenide/aromatic hydrocarbons and ketones must not be used. Observe the following
regarding detergents and disinfectants on electronic components:
a. Do not use strong alkaline or acidic compounds (pH value 6-8)
b. Compounds must not contain corrosive or caustic material.

onto oring to allow easier insertion.
The duty cycle on the control box product label must always be noted. Otherwise there
is a risk of damaging the products. Exceeding the duty cycle will result in a dramatic
reduction of the lifetime of the system. Unless specified otherwise on the product label
the duty cycle is max. 10% : Max. 2 minutes in the use followed by 18 minutes not in use.
If any individual parts are suspected to be damaged, do not operate the parts, but return
them for inspection/service.

OPERATING THE WHITNEY SAFETY PLATFORM WALKER:
1. Fit the harness as low as possible across the hips and bottom with the broad upper part around the
hips and the narrow lower part around the bottom.
2. Place waist strap around the user and tighten using the adjustable safety belt. (Note that the lower
part of the harness attached around the patient’s bottom can be opened as required (i.e. toileting).
3. Place the user’s legs at a 90 degree angle with their feet on the floor or platform. Adjust the shin
supports to fit the user’s shins. (Remember to avoid pressure on the patellae and patellar tendons)
4. Maximize the base frame width to get close to the user.
5. Make sure the belts are threaded completely through the locking devices. (Note: Always check that
the belts are not damaged, worn, or frayed and that the holder and straps are not bent or crooked).
6. Connect the power rise harness and attachment belts and tighten them using the loops; the belts
must be taught on both sides. Slide the loop back once the straps have been tightened.
7. Swing the forearm supports to the side; the user must now grasp the handles without support for the
forearms.
8. Lock the two front casters.
9. Before the user raises to a standing position, the caregiver must stand in front of the user ensuring
stability during sit-to-stand raising. After the user is standing, check that the harness pulls evenly on
both sides; if not, adjust immediately.
10. In most cases the patient will not achieve a fully upright standing position; encourage the patient to
achieve a final upright posture independently or assist the patient by tightening the adjustable harness
straps.
11. Lower the walker to its individually adjusted height and swing the forearm supports back into position
to provide support for the user. (Note: if the platform is not being used, swing the shin supports away
for increased walking room).
12. Use directional locks for setting direction of travel. For example, you may consider locking just one
side to help correct for a gait drift. You can lock either, both, or unlock directional as therapeutically
appropriate.

ELECTRONICS:
BATTERY CARE AND CAUTIONS:
Battery packs may emit hydrogen gas. So do not bring fire or a heated object close to
the battery pack, and never use the battery near a spark, fuses and/or equipment that
emits sparks. Further, do not store the battery in a closed environment or incorporate
it into a closed structure of an enclosure. Doing so can cause an explosion, fire,
equipment damage and bodily injury.
Do not connect the positive terminal and the negative terminal of the battery packs with
a wire or other metals.
Short-circuiting the terminals of the battery can cause burn injuries, damage to the
storage battery or trigger explosions.
Never connect the battery packs directly to a power supply socket or an automobile’s
cigarette lighter without using a charger as a medium. Connecting the battery directly
can cause the battery to leak fluid, generate heat, explode, cause fires or bodily burns
and injuries.
Battery packs contain dilute sulphuric acid, which is a toxic substance. If the battery’s
internal fluid leaks out and gets onto your skin or clothing, make sure it is washed off
with clean water. Additionally, if the fluid gets in your eyes, wash them with clean water
immediately, and see a doctor. When dilute sulphuric acid gets in your eyes, it can
cause a loss of eyesight and when it gets on your skin, it can cause a burn on your
skin.
Do not use or store LINAK battery packs where the surrounding temperature exceed
50°C, such as inside a hot automobile, in direct sunlight, or in front of a stove or a
source of intense heat. Doing so can shorten battery life, lower its performance level,
cause the battery to leak fluid, be damaged or deformed.
