Instructionsfor3Dcinemaglasses
TheactiveglassesX101workinautomaticmode–thereisnopowerswitchtoturntheglasses"ON"
or"OFF".Uponreceivingtheglasses,theyareintheoff‐mode,meaningthattheglassesperiodically
checkforthevalidIRsignal.Intheoff‐modethelensesappeargreen.UponreceivingtheIRsignal,
theglassesstartawarm‐upsequence.
Warm‐upsequence‐Duringthewarm‐upperiodthelensesremainopaquefortheentirewarm‐up
periodwhichlastsfortwoseconds.Attheendofawarm‐upperiodtheglassesgointonormalrun‐
mode.Inthismode,thelensesopenandcloseinsyncwiththeprojectortodeliverthe3Dexperience
totheviewer.
Clearmode‐Wheninrun‐mode,aftertheglasseslooseavalidsynchronizationsignal,theygotoa
clearmode(bothlensesclear).Intheclearmode,bothlensesremainopen,sothattheviewercan
seenormallythroughtheglasses.Thelensesremainopenuntiltheglassesareabletoreceiveasync
signal.Iftheydon'treceivethesignalinfiveminutestheygotoanoff‐mode.
Batterylife‐Theglassescheckforalowbatteryconditionjustbeforegoingtothe"off‐mode".Ifthe
batterylifeisinsufficientthelenseswillbeginblinkingslowly(thelensesareclosedandbrieflyflash
opensimultaneouslyonceeverytwoseconds)toindicatealowbatteryconditionandpreventthe
glassesfromgoingtorun‐mode.Thecontrolcircuitisdesignedsothatalowbatteryconditiondoes
notappearduringtherun‐modewhenwatchingamovie.
Replacingthebattery‐Accesstothebatteryisprovidedthroughanopeningontheinteriorsideof
theframethatissealedoffbyacover.Inthecaseofdeadbattery,thesealisopenedusingakey,

rotatingitleftwisefrom"c"positionto"o"position.Thebatteryshouldprovideenoughenergyfor
250hoursofuseinrun‐modewhentheprojectorissetfor"TripleFlash,6:2",and300hoursofusein
run‐modewhentheprojectorissetfor"DoubleFlash,4:2".
Testingoftheglasses
TestingoftheglassespriortodistributiontoausercanbeperformedusingtheAT100ActiveGlasses
Tester.TheAT100is"ON"ifthe"ON/OFF"buttonispressedandtheredLEDislit.TheAT100is
designedtogeneratealowintensityIRsignalthatwhenpassedwithin2feetoftheX101glasses
causesthelensestoflickerinresponsetotheIRsignal.Bothlensesshouldflickerataslowerrate
thatisvisibletoauserandindoingsoindicatethattheglassesarefunctioningproperlyandare
readyfordistribution.Ifthelensesdonotflickerthebatteryisdeadandtheglassesshouldnotbe
used.TheAT100willshutoffautomaticallyafterseveralhoursoryoucanturnitoffmanually.
HandlingInstructions
ParameterInstructions
StorageItisrecommendedthattheglassesbestoredawayfromanyIRsource
suchasfluorescentlightsorbecoveredsotheIRdoesnottriggerthe
glassestoswitchtotheon‐mode.Thestoragetemperatureshouldbe
standardofficetemperaturesashightemperatureenvironmentsreduce
batterylife.
HandlingTheglassesaregenerallyprettydurable,butthelensescanbecrackedif
theglassesarerotatedaroundthefocalpointofthenosepiece.When
distributingtheglassestouserscareshouldbetakentohandletheglasses
bytheframeinordertoavoidgettingfingerprintsonthelenses.
CleaningTheglassesaredesignedtobewashedinaconventionalorcommercial
dishwasherattemperaturesnottoexceed55°C(131°F).Recommended
temperatureis50°C(122°F).Foraconventionaldishwashera
Fisher&PaykelDishDrawerDD603orDD603Iarerecommended.If
cleaningbyhandyoucanuseastandardcleaningagentthatisnot
ammoniabased.Windexhasananti‐bacterialcleaningproductthat
worksquitewell.Theglassescanalsobewashedunderafaucetusing
liquidsoapandwarmwater.Whencleaningbyhandyoushoulddrythe
lensesusingalintfree,soft,dryingcloth.(DONOTUSEPAPERTOWELSAS
THEYCANSCRATCHTHELENS)

AE125‐Emitter,Mid‐Range,WideAngle
ThisisavariationoftheMediumrangeemitterdesignedtobe
mountedatthefrontofthetheaterandaimedattheaudience.It
providesfillcoverageinspecialsituationssuchasverywide
theaterswherebouncingtheIRsignaloffthescreenproves
inadequate.Itcontains56high‐power,wide‐angle(±25°),IRdiodes
andconsumesfourwattsofpowerinactiveoperation.It’s
dimensionsare4.4”(111.8mm)x1.4”(35.6mm)x3.0”(76.2mm),
(width/height/depth).Itweighs6ounces(.17Kg).
AD1000‐SyncDistributionModule
TheDistributionModulereceivestheframesyncsignalfromthe
projectororothersource,convertsittoXPAND’sproprietary
synchronizationpulsecodeandsendsittotheIRemitterarrays.It
alsosuppliespowertotheemitterarraysandmonitorstheir
performance.ItcancontroluptofourIRemitterarrays
simultaneously.InadditiontotheexternalIRarrays,theunithasits
ownsetofIRemittersthatwillfloodtheprojectionboothwiththe
IRsignal.TheseIRdiodescanbeturnedoffifdesired.Themoduleisdesignedtobemountedonthe
frontwalloftheprojectionbooth.Itsdimensionsare8.6”(218,4mm)x4.2”(106.7mm)x2.3”(58.4
mm),(width/height/depth).Itweighs15ounces(.43Kg)
Toconservepowerandextendlife,thedistributionmoduleactivatestheIRemitterarraysonlyifthe
framesyncsignalisofafrequencyhigherthan36Hertzandlessthan80Hertz.3Dmoviesuseasync
rateof48to72Hertzwhile2Dmoviesuseasyncrateof24Hertz.Forthisreasontheunitdoesnot
havetobedeactivatedwhen2Dmoviesarebeingshownortheprojectorisidle.

Whenthesystemisfirstinstalledorverificationofsystemoperationisdesired,thedistribution
moduleissuppliedwitha60Hertzframesyncgeneratorbuiltintothemodule.Itisactivatedby
pushingtheon/offswitchfor"SetupFrameSync"tothe"on"position.Ifthesyncgeneratoris
operatingandavalid(36to80Hertz)externalframesyncsignalisreceivedfromtheprojectoror
othersource,operationofthetestgeneratorwillceaseandtheemitterarrayswillbesynchronized
totheexternalsignal.
Thelongrangeemitterarrayincludesalaserpointertoassistinaimingtheemitterarrayatthe
screen.Thelaserpointerisactivatedbyaswitchonthedistributionmodulelabeled"LaserPointer",
butcanonlybeactivatedwhenthe"SetupFrameSync"generatorisoperating.Thispreventsthe
laserdiodefrombeingturnedonwhilea3Dvideoisbeingshown.
Fordiagnosticpurposes,thefollowingindicatorlightsareprovided:
1. AgreenpowerLEDindicatingthatthemodulehaspower.
2. AgreensyncLEDpositionedovertheinputconnectorindicatingthatavalid(36to80Hertz)
syncsignalisbeingreceived.
3. AflashingyellowLEDpositionednearthe"SetupFrameSync"labelindicatingthatthetest
generatorisactive.
4. AgreenandredLEDarepositionedovereachofthefouroutputconnectors.ThegreenLED
indicatesthatanIRarrayisconnectedtotheoutputandisreceivingpower,andaframesync
inputsignalistransmittingIR.TheredLEDindicatesthatanarrayisconnectedandshould
beemittingIRradiation,butisnot.AredLEDindicatesafaultconditionthatrequires
attention.ThegreenLEDisdesignedtoprovidetheprojectionpersonnelassurancethat
everythingishookedupandoperatingnormallyorwillworknormallywhenaninputsync
signalisreceived.Shouldtheoperatorwishtocompletelytestthesystem,hecanactivate
thesyncgeneratorbyturning"ON"the"SetupFrameSync"feature.ThegreenLEDwiththe
absenceoftheredLEDwillnowindicatethatthesystemisworkingandemittingIRpulses.
Alternatively,hecanputonapairofglassesandlookthroughtheprojectionwindow.Inthe
absenceoftheIRsyncsignal,theglasseswillbeinaclearstate(bothlensesclear–atleastas
clearastheyget‐100%ofthetime).InthepresenceofanIRsyncsignal,thelenseswill
alternatebetweentheopaqueandclearstateinsynchronizationwiththeIRsignal.Theywill
alternatetooquicklytohavetheflickerperceived,buttheeffectivetransmissionwilldropby
50%.Thisisdetectablebytheviewer,butnotobjectionablesoitisasuitabletestcondition
justbeforethemovieisstartedeveninthepresenceofanaudience,ifneeded.
