1 General information
1.1 Intended use
The access steps with platform enable height-adjustable access to machines. Access is
via the quadruple-beam steps, which are connected to the telescopic guide via ropes. The
telescopic guide is height-adjustable with a manually operated rack and pinion winch and
secured with safety catches.
The product is designed for the following applications:
• For indoor and limited outdoor use (depending on model)
• With lighting on the platform and surroundings of at least 300 lux (in addition, the re-
spective national specifications must be observed)
• The product is intended for use only by authorised and trained personnel
• Use in compliance with regular security checks
• As a climbing aid providing safe and easy access to working positions at a maximum
height (depending on scope of order)
• Use by a single person
• The operating and maintenance conditions prescribed by the manufacturer must be
complied with
• Personnel must be familiar with the regulations applicable in their country regarding
occupational safety and health protection, accident prevention and the safe assembly
and use of access technology products.
• Trainee personnel must not be allowed to assemble the product unless under supervi-
sion or authorised to do so by skilled personnel.
• Maintenance work may be carried out by personnel after authorisation by the operator.
Maintenance personnel must be authorised in accordance with the regulations which
apply in the country in question.
• Hoisting without persons on the platform
1.2 Improper use
Any use other than the ones described under “Intended use” is considered improper.
The operator bears sole liability for any damage arising from such use. The following uses,
in particular, are explicitly prohibited:
• Use of the product as a stair tower or to bridge a gap to other access equipment or
buildings
• Use of the product to support other climbing aids or for any work above the specified
maximum height (see order confirmation)
• Use of the product as an attachment point for lifting equipment, hoists or other similar
items
• Use to hoist or transport equipment, material or persons
• Use of the product in areas with explosion risk
• All other types of use not explicitly listed above as an approved intended use
1.3 Important information concerning this manual
The manual is part of the scope of delivery and must be available at all times. If the prod-
uct is passed on, these instructions must be included.

This instruction manual contains important information that teaches users how to set up
and use the product safely. They are intended for persons carrying out the following activi-
ties:
• transportation
• assembly and dismantling
• operation
• Maintenance and servicing
The following documents/regulations are also to be observed in addition to this instruction
manual:
• Customer-specific order confirmation including all technical information
• Country-specific regulations concerning accident prevention
• Recognised technical standards for the correct and safe use of steps
• Safety regulations for the use of electrical equipment where there is increased electri-
cal risk
1.3.1 Amendments/validity

We reserve the right to make technical changes to the product at any time. Therefore, the
actual product may differ from the images shown in this instruction manual.
1.3.2 Regulations/standards
In addition to the instructions in this manual, the following regulations must be complied
with when installing, using and servicing the equipment:
• DIN EN 131-3 Ladders – Part 3 Labelling and instructions for use; German version
2018-03 (also mobile platform ladders)
• DIN EN 131-7 Mobile platform ladders (with a maximum area of 1m² and a max. plat-
form height of 5 m, intended for use by one person); German version 2013-09
• DIN EN 14122-3 Permanent means of access to machinery – Stairs, ladders and guard-
rails; German version 201610
• DIN EN ISO 12100 General principles for design, risk assessment and risk reduction
(ISO 12100:2010); German version EN ISO 12100:2011-03 and Amendment 1: 2
1.4 Notes for the operator
The operator must ensure:
• that all required documents are always available at the place of assembly and use;
• compliance with regional and national regulations on occupational safety, accident pre-
vention and working on/with ladders and steps;
• that ergonomic working heights from 500-1700 mm are observed when working on the
platform;
• that the product is used as intended and is in proper technical condition;
• that this instruction manual is included if the product is passed on to a new owner.
In addition, the operator must:
• draw up operating instructions for the use of the access steps with platform (these in-
structions must contain all necessary information on the safe use of the equipment);
• instruct personnel at least once a year on how to use the equipment, on the basis of the
operating instructions;
• prepare a risk assessment;

• ensure that improper use, incorrect installation and impermissible use are excluded;
• ensure that there is sufficient lighting in accordance with applicable regulations (par-
ticularly ASR A3.4 Lighting) so that actuators and control and display devices are easy
to read;
• determine the operating conditions and define the product specification for indoor or
outdoor use before using the height-adjustable access steps with platform;
• check the suitability of the substrate before commissioning.
1.5 Notes for the user
The product may only be assembled, dismantled, used and maintained if the following re-
quirements are met:
• The user is not under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication that can impair the
ability to react.
• To avoid overexertion due to unhealthy posture, the platform height must be adjusted to
the optimal ergonomic height before use.
• The user has carefully read and understood these instructions before assembling the
product and using it for the first time.
• The user must be familiar with the accident prevention regulations applicable in the
country of use as well as regulations concerning the safe assembly, dismantling, use
and maintenance of ladders and steps.
• Personnel undergoing training may only use the product under the supervision of or
when authorised to do so by an experienced person.
• Operating staff may only perform maintenance work on the product if authorised to do
so by the operator.
1.6 Liability/Guarantee/Warranty
The manufacturer is not liable for any damages caused by the following:
– Improper storage
– Improper assembly, dismantling, operation and maintenance
– Inadequate maintenance
– Improper use
• The warranty period begins on the date of delivery. The statutory warranty periods apply
unless otherwise stipulated in the contract.
• Unauthorised modifications to the product will void all guarantee, warranty and liability
claims.
• Additional attachment parts may only be installed after consultation with ZARGES.
• The technical specifications in these instructions must be observed in order for a statu-
tory warranty claim to be fully valid.
• Only original replacement parts may be used. When ordering, the customer-specific
serial number must be specified on the type plate.

1.8 Storage/Transportation
• Store all components in such a way that they cannot be damaged.
• Protect all components from the effects of weather and preferably store them horizon-
tally.
• Transport the product in an unassembled state with a forklift truck.
• Never transport the product in an assembled state with vehicles.
• Do not lift the product by its guardrail or struts; always attach the lifting tackle properly
to the stair body or the platform.
• Secure the components with a strap to prevent them sliding or falling during transport.
• Do not throw the components during loading or unloading.
2 Safety instructions
2.1 Hazard classification
The following signal words are used together with the safety warning symbol to indicate
the severity of a possible hazard.
Classification Meaning
Danger Indicates highly hazardous situations that will result in severe injuries or even death if not
avoided.
Warning Indicates hazardous situations that may result in severe injuries or even death if not avoided.
Caution Indicates hazardous situations that may result in minor or moderate injuries if not avoided.

2.3 Description of symbols and hazard pictograms
The following pictograms are used in the instructions and on the product.
The safety pictograms on the access steps with platform must not be removed, painted
over or damaged.

2.3.1 Pictograms on the product
Read the instructions in their entirety. Additional information on the ladder is available online.
Falling from the access steps with platform may cause serious injuries.
Avoid leaning out of the product's sides.
Only one person may be on the access steps with platform at any time.
Only use the ladder with ballasted horizontal stabiliser bar.
Check that the castor brakes are locked before use.
Do not use the access steps with platform outdoors in poor weather conditions, e.g. strong winds.
Do not use the access steps with platform on an uneven or unstable surface.
Never use a set of damaged access steps with platform. Inspect the access steps with platform for signs of
damage upon delivery and before every use.
The maximum load capacity may not be exceeded.

2.4 Safety labels and type plates

2.5 Danger area
The danger area refers to the area surrounding the product where persons may be hit by
falling objects.

Improper use of the product may lead to injury or even death.
• When operating the product, no other person is allowed to remain in the danger area.
2.6 Personal safety
WARNING
Injury to persons
If the product is assembled, dismantled, operated and maintained by anyone other than
qualified persons, this may result in injury.
• The product may be assembled, dismantled, operated and maintained by qualified
individuals only.
• These instructions, safety labels and information signs must be read and understood
by all persons involved.
• Never throw materials or tools, but pass them up or down from person to person.
• Do not walk under the product.
• Never climb the outside of the product. Only climb onto the product by using the
steps.
• Always wear personal protective equipment that is appropriate for the job at hand.

2.7 General safety instructions
WARNING
Injury to persons
Improper assembly, dismantling, operation and maintenance of the product may lead to
severe injury.
• Proper use must be observed.
• Do not work in ways that compromise safety.
• The specifications in these instructions must be observed when assembling, disman-
tling, operating and maintaining the product.
• The product may only be used when it is complete and in a proper working condition.
• All movable attachment and structural parts must be secured in place using the lock-
ing mechanisms designed for this purpose.
• All required documents, safety-related instructions and safety information must be
legible, complete and stored carefully on the product.
• Never leave the product unattended in places accessible to the public. Seal off the
danger area to passers-by. If required, use warning barriers, warning lamps or de-
ploy personnel to guard the area.
• The product must never be attached to towing vehicles.
• The product may not be used in a thunderstorm.
• Always provide ample lighting in the working area.
• Secure the fixed and swivel castors against rolling away in the working and parking
position by pressing down the brake lever.
• The surface must be level (max. slope of 2.5%) and have sufficient load capacity. Use
load-distributing pads if necessary.
WARNING
Injury to persons
There is a risk of falling when working on the product without using adequate fall pro-
tection equipment. This may result in damage to property, severe injury and even death.
• For a climbing height of over 500 mm and a lateral gap next to the steps of >180 mm,
only use the product with a complete fall protection device (depending on the scope of
order: handrail/railing, swing door or pole barrier).
• All handrails/guardrails must be fitted and secured in place before the product is
used. This applies in particular if there is a risk of drowning or breakage in the event
of a fall.
• For steps >45°, two handrails must always be installed.
• For distances > 20 mm between the platform and the machine/wall, a toe board is
required.
• When using the product without secured areas on the platform, do not enter the plat-
form without personal protective equipment and secure yourself according to appli-
cable regulations.

WARNING
Injury to persons
Improper use of the product may lead to it toppling. Serious injuries may occur.
• In the event of high winds, evacuate the product, move it to a wind-sheltered position
with the help of several other persons and take appropriate measures to secure it
against toppling over (e.g. by anchoring it).
• When using the product in buildings open to the passage of wind, next to unclad
buildings or at building corners, observe the wind conditions and, if necessary, secure
the product to prevent it from toppling over.
• After completing work, move the product to a place sheltered from wind and secure it
against toppling.
• Never attach advertising placards or products that could increase the wind load.
2.8 Safety instructions for working with electrical equipment
WARNING
Injury to persons
Improper use of electrical equipment while standing on the product may lead to injury.
Only use electrical equipment under the following conditions:
• with Safety Extra Low Voltage (48 V);
• with protective insulation (separation transformer);
• if the equipment is connected via an earth-leakage circuit breaker with a maximum
residual current of 30 mA.
WARNING
Injury to persons
Failure to observe proper practices when working near live systems may lead to injury.
Only use the product near such systems if the following conditions are met:
• The unit is disconnected and secured against being switched back on.
• The section of the unit in question is de-energised.
• The section of the unit is earthed by means of an earthing strap.
• The section of the unit is insulated from any adjacent current-bearing components.
WARNING
Injury to persons
Failure to observe proper practices when working near overhead power lines may lead
to injury. Only use the product near such overhead lines if the following conditions are
met:
• The safety clearances are observed as shown in the table below.
• When calculating safety clearances, take the swing radius of power lines and move-
ment radius of working personnel into account. The movement radius of working per-
sonnel also includes any objects they are holding.
• If it is impossible to observe the safety clearances, have the power line operator dis-
connect the power lines and secure them against being switched back on.
