4 Wireless Modem User’s Manual
1
Getting Started
This User’s Manual is organized according to the different ways
that you can use your Bluetooth modem:
•Wirelessly with a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)
•Wirelessly with a Windows®computer
•With a traditional serial cable to a PC, Macintosh, or Linux-
based machine.
Package Contents
Before beginning, make sure that your package includes the
following items.
•56K modem equipped with Bluetooth wireless technology
•Phone cord (and phone adapter if required)
•Power adapter
•CD
•Velcro® to attach the modem to the wall (optional).
If anything is missing or damaged, contact your supplier.
You Will Also Need
To set up a wireless connection to the modem, you will need a
Windows 98SE, Me, 2000, or XP computer or Personal Digital
Assistant (PDA) equipped with Bluetooth wireless technology or a
Bluetooth adapter. Many computers and PDAs include built-in
Bluetooth capability. If yours does not, you will have to purchase
an adapter separately.

1 Getting Started 5
Note: Your Zoom modem is a Bluetooth Class 1 modem. Many
of the Bluetooth adapters that are built into computers
today are Class 3. The Zoom modem works with all three
classes of Bluetooth devices, but you should be aware of
the differences. Class 1 devices can communicate over a
range of 100 meters; Class 2, 10 meters; and Class 3, 10
centimeters. If you are using different classes, the distance
over which you can communicate will be limited by the
lower class of Bluetooth device.
Alternatively, you can use your Bluetooth modem to achieve a
traditional, wired dial-up connection to the Internet. If you want to
use your modem in this way, you will need a computer with a serial
port (and a CD-ROM drive if you are using Windows), and an RS-
232 serial cable to connect the modem to your computer.

2
Typical Computer Installation
This chapter is for users with Windows desktop or notebook
computers. If you have a PDA, go to page 14.
There are a few basic steps associated with setting up your
Bluetooth wireless modem and establishing a dial-up
connection to the Internet.
•Connect the hardware.
•Install any necessary software (if not already installed).
•Pair the Bluetooth modem with your computer and enter
the modem’s PIN.
•Set up Dial-Up Networking (DUN).
•Enable faxing (optional).
Connect the Modem Hardware
1
11
1On the back of the modem, make sure the selectable switch is
all the way to the left, the side marked BT (for Bluetooth).
2Plug one end of the supplied phone cord into the modem’s
Line port, and plug the other end into a telephone wall jack.
3Plug one end of the included power adapter into the modem
and the other end into a wall outlet or power strip.
Set Up Your Bluetooth Connection
To set up a wireless dial-up connection to the Internet with your
Bluetooth modem, you must have a Bluetooth adapter. Some
computers have built-in adapters; if your computer doesn’t, you
will have to purchase one separately. You can check by right-
clicking on your computer’s My Computer icon, selecting
Properties, and then clicking the Hardware tab (Windows
2000/XP users only) and then the Device Manager tab. If

2 Typical Computer Installation 7
Bluetooth is installed, it will be listed under Device Manager.
Alternately, you can go to Start | Settings | Control Panel, and
click Add/Remove Programs. If Bluetooth is installed, its name
will appear in the list.
If you need to install a Bluetooth adapter, the basic instructions are
similar, regardless of the brand of adapter. For example, you would
install software from a CD and then connect the adapter to your
computer. If your adapter is not yet installed, you should install it
now, before setting up your modem’s dial-up Internet connection.
Refer to the instructions included with your adapter for proper
installation.
Important: As part of the Bluetooth adapter installation process,
an icon named My Bluetooth Places is installed on your
computer desktop.
1
11
1Windows 98Se/ME/2000 Users:
Double-click the My Bluetooth Places icon on your desktop.
(Note: If this icon is not visible, go to Start |Programs |
Bluetooth or refer to the box above.)
Windows XP Users:
Right-click the Bluetooth icon in the computer system tray and
select Quick Connect | Dial-up Networking | Find
Devices. Proceed to Step 4 on page 9.

device and computer. (A PIN is sometimes called a passkey.)
Click this dialog box.
5
55
5The Bluetooth PIN Code Request dialog box displays. Type
in the modem’s PIN and click OK.Note: The PIN is located
on the label on the bottom of your modem.

you would like more information, consult the context-sensitive
Bluetooth help included with your adapter. You can also visit our
Web site to check for updated information.
To use your wireless modem for faxing, refer to page 12. If you
sometimes want to use your modem with a cable connecting to
your computer, turn to page 17. If you don’t want to do either of
these things, you’re done. Enjoy your modem!
Tip: You can mount your modem on the wall using the supplied
Velcro strips. For each Velcro pair, peel off one side of the
adhesive paper backing and attach the Velcro strip to the
bottom of the modem—be careful not to cover the Reset
button. Then peel off the other side of the adhesive backing;
and attach the modem to the wall. After placing the modem
on the wall, you can swivel its multidirectional antenna.
If You Are Installing AOL

connection).
Note: If multiple modems are installed on your computer, you
will see multiple Modem entries. Double-click each one until
you locate the one that is using the Bluetooth modem’s COM
port.
Once the AOL CD installation is complete, you can double-
check your modem’s COM port connection at any time. From
the main AOL Sign On screen, click the Setup button and
then click Expert Setup. Make sure the Devices (modems,
etc.) tab is foremost; you will see an entry for your Bluetooth
