Quick Start for 3G+ Modem/Router with Phone Port
This Quick Start describes setup for the Modem/Router. First the Modem/Router is configured using a
Windows®, Macintosh®, or Linux computer; and then the Modem/Router is connected to the devices you
choose. More detailed information is in the User Manual on the CD.
Package Contents
The package contains the Modem/Router, a 12V 1.0A Power Adapter, an Ethernet Cable, this Quick
Start flyer, and a CD that contains additional documentation and warranty information. If anything is
missing or damaged, please contact Zoom Customer Support or whoever provided the
Modem/Router.
Getting Started
This Quick Start describes setting up the Modem/Router to use its built-in 3G+ mobile broadband
modem to provide Internet access and voice calls using a mobile broadband service. Please see the
full-length manual on your CD if you want to use the Modem/Router to back up your existing DSL or
Cable connection.
Before installing the Modem/Router you will need a SIM card for the built-in 3G+ modem. This
SIM card may have been provided to you by your service provider or you may need to purchase one.
To use the Modem/Router for both data and voice you will need a SIM that supports both data and
voice. If you just want to use the Modem/Router for Internet access, a SIM that only supports data
will work.
Installing the Hardware
1Place the Modem/Router near a computer to be used for setup. This computer needs an Ethernet (LAN)
port.
2Turn off the computer.
3Attach the antenna to the Modem/Router if the antenna isn’t already attached. (Remove the antenna from
the package. Place the end of the detachable antenna on the open antenna connection port and rotate
the antenna clockwise by hand until it no longer turns easily. It may take many turns before the antenna is
completely connected. Move the antenna into an upright orientation, since that normally gives best
wireless performance. The antenna should snap into place.
4Insert the SIM card into the slot on the back of the modem as shown below. You should hear the SIM
card click into place.
i.

5Connect one end of the supplied Ethernet cable to any of the computer’s Ethernet ports and the other end
to any of the Modem/Router‘s LAN ports.
6Plug the supplied power cube into the Modem/Router and then into a power outlet. The Modem/Router
has completed powering up when the Status light starts blinking.
Important: Use only the power cube shipped with the Modem/Router. Other power cubes may damage
the device.
7Check that the Signal Strength light has changed from red to green or amber. If the light remains red
please go to Troubleshooting your Internet Connection. A red light means that the Modem/Router
can not talk to the mobile broadband network. A green light means you have strong signal, and an amber
light means you have a weak signal. If your light is amber, you may try changing the antenna orientation
or moving the unit to another location. Normally best cellular performance occurs when the antenna is
vertical and when the Modem/Router is not too deep inside a building. For best performance, the
Modem/Router should not be on top of a metal surface
8Turn on the computer. The connected Ethernet (LAN) port Light should start blinking. If the connected
Ethernet (LAN) Light doesn’t blink, please see the Troubleshooting Tips in the User Manual on the CD.
Configuring the Software
1In the computer's Web browser address bar, type http://192.168.2.1 and then press Enter.
2When the USER'S MAIN MENU opens, it displays a Status page that lists the current values for a variety

settings. A message will appear if auto-detection was successful or not. If auto-detection was successful
click Next. If auto-detection failed to detect your SIM card settings click OK to close the message box and
then select Manual Setup. On the Manual Setup page select your Country, and then select the name
of your Service Provider from the drop down list. The rest of the fields on the page are automatically
filled in. If a field is left empty, don’t worry that field is not used for your provider. Click Next.
Note: If your country or service provider does not appear in the dropdown list you must manual enter your
service providers settings on the Basic Setup page. Please see Chapter 7, Using the Configuration
Manager’s Advanced Program for how to do this.
9Wireless Settings (WiFi):
Wireless Function: Is enabled by default. You may choose to disable the Wireless Function if you
are not using wireless functionality.
Wireless Network Name(SSID): The name of your wireless network. By default your wireless
network name is Zoom_xxxxxx, where xxxxxx is a random 4 to 6 digit string. Your default
Wireless Network Name is printed on the bottom label of your Modem/Router.

Channel: The default channel is set to 10. This is fine for most users. In the unlikely event that you
experience performance issues with your wireless network, you may want to set your network up on a
channel that is different from the factory-set channel of 10. For instance, you may want to try channel
1 or 6.
Click Next.
10 Security Mode: By default, the Modem/Router uses WPA2/WPA security. Most users should use this
setting. A random Wireless Security Key is programmed in at the factory. This Wireless Security Key
is printed on a label on the bottom of the unit. When you are wirelessly connecting other devices to the
Modem/Router, enter the Wireless Security Key printed on the label when prompted for a security key or
wireless password.
11 On the Summary page, click Apply Settings to save your settings. By default the modem is set to test
your 3G+ connection. If you do not want to test your 3G+ connection at this time uncheck the Do you
want to proceed with the Network testing box.
12 If your Internet connection test was successful a Congratulations screen should appear. Click Finish.
Your modem will now reboot and save your settings. Proceed to Using the Modem/Router to Make
Voice Calls to learn about using the Modem/Router for voice calls. If your Internet connection test failed,
try running it again by clicking Connect Again. If it still fails to connect please go to Troubleshooting
your Internet Connection. If you did not run the Internet connection test the Configuration is
Complete screen will appear. Click Finish. Your modem will now reboot and save your settings.
Proceed to Using the Modem/Router to Make Voice Calls to learn about using the Modem/Router for
voice calls.
Using the Modem/Router to Make Voice Calls
The Modem/Router can be used to make and receive voice calls over the mobile voice network using
a “wired” phone or cordless phone (not a mobile phone). As noted earlier, the Modem/Router needs
to have a SIM that allows voice calls. Simply plug the phone cord of the phone or cordless phone
base station into the RJ-11 Phone jack on the back of the Modem/Router. If your phone cord doesn’t
have the right type of plug, you may need to buy an adapter. After you’ve done that, you should be
able to make and receive calls as if you were plugged directly into a phone jack on the wall, as long
as the Modem/Router is powered up and your service is working. If you are unable to make voice
calls please see the Troubleshooting Tips in the User Manual on the CD
Connecting additional computers and/or other devices to the Modem/Router
You can connect additional computers and/or other devices to the Modem/Router in two ways. You
can use a Wired Ethernet Connection (see below) by connecting an Ethernet cable between the
Ethernet port of your computer or other device and any one of the Modem/Router’s four Ethernet
(LAN) ports, or you can establish a wireless connection (see Wireless Connection below).
Even if you don’t want the computer that’s now connected to your Modem/Router to stay connected
to it, you should keep it connected until you’ve finished connecting other devices to your
Modem/Router. After that, you can simply unplug it if you like.
Wired Ethernet Connection
1Shut down and power off the computer or other device you want to connect to the Modem/Router. (This is
important because the computer or other device must locate the correct IP address for the
Modem/Router. This is done when the computer is turned back on in step 2 below.)

2Plug an Ethernet cable between an Ethernet port of the computer or other device and any one of the
Modem/Router’s available Ethernet (LAN) ports. Then turn on the computer or other device. An Ethernet
(LAN) LED on your Modem/Router’s front panel should turn on, corresponding to the Ethernet (LAN) port
you used.
3Verify that your Internet connection is working for that computer or other device. Open your Web browser
(for instance, Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome) and try to connect to a familiar Web address.
4Repeat steps 1–3 for each computer or other device you want to add.
Wireless Connection
First, determine whether the computer or other device has built-in WiFi-compatible wireless capability. (This is
also called 802.11 or wireless LAN capability.) Most current notebooks and laptops do; most desktops don’t. If
your computer or other device doesn’t have WiFi-compatible wireless capability, you will need to add that
capability. The lowest cost way to do this for a computer is usually with a WiFi-compatible USB adapter. You
may want to use a WiFi-compatible Ethernet client instead if you want to give your computer longer range, or if
you are using a computer or other device that doesn’t run a Windows or Macintosh operating system.
Note: Please check that wireless is also enabled on the devices you are using, since many devices have
wireless set to OFF by default.
Once you have WiFi-compatible wireless capability, connect to the Modem/Router. Many computers will
display a message such as: “Wireless network detected. Click here for available networks.” The name of the
Modem/Router’s wireless network (SSID) is found on the bottom label of your unit. The default Wireless
Network name is Zoom-followed by 6 random characters unless you changed the name during installation.
When your client device prompts you for Security Key or Password, enter the default 10 to 15 digit Wireless Security Key found
on the bottom label.
Testing your wireless computers and other wireless clients
Open your browser and go to a website to test your wireless setup. If it works, congratulations! If it
doesn’t, please see the Troubleshooting Tips in the User Manual on the CD.
Troubleshooting Your Internet Connection
If you are unable to connect to the Internet through your router, please first check Signal Strength
light on the Modem/Router’s front panel.
If the light is red that means either your SIM card is not inserted or not working, or your
Modem/Router is not receiving a mobile broadband signal. If your Signal Strength light is red please
try the following:
!Check that your SIM card is properly inserted into the back of your Modem/Router.
!Verify that you are in a mobile broadband coverage area. You may want to move the antenna to
optimize signal strength; putting the antenna in a vertical position normally gives the best
performance. You may also want to try changing the location of your router, for example, by
moving the router closer to a window.
If your Signal Strength Light is amber or green that means you are connected to the mobile
broadband network but most likely your mobile broadband settings are wrong. If your Signal
Strength light is green or amber please try the following:
!If you used auto-configure to detect your service provider, the Modem/Router may have used the
wrong settings for your provider. Auto-configure can only detect your service provider, it can not
detect the actual settings. Once it detects your provider it tries the most common setting for that

provider. To check if this is the problem, run the setup wizard again. When you get to the Setup
3G+ page select Manual. Select your country and then select your service provider. If you have
multiple settings for your service provider you will need to run the wizard again until you have
tried each setting. If none of the predefined settings work, contact your service provider and ask
if they can provide you with your APN, Dialed Number, Account, Password, and Pin Code.
Some of these settings are optional and your service provider may not need them.
!If your Signal Strength light is amber, you may want to move the antenna to optimize signal
strength; putting the antenna in a vertical position normally gives the best performance. You may
also want to try changing the location of your router, for example, by moving the router closer to a
window.
