A. SAFETY MESSAGES
1. Adult assistance and supervision are required at all times. 2. This kit is intended for children over 5 years of age. 3. This kit and its
finished product contain small parts which may cause choking if misused. Keep away from children under 3 years old. 4. To prevent
possible short circuits, never touch the contacts inside the battery case with any metal objects. 5. Only install batteries after you have
assembled the product. Adult supervision is required. 6. Please read through all the instructions and keep them since they contain impor-
tant information.
G. SPECIAL CHESS RULES
1. Promotion - If a pawn reaches the far side of the board from where it started the pawn may be 'promoted' (turned into any other piece
except a king). This means a pawn can be promoted into a bishop, knight, rook or queen. It also means a player can have more than one
queen, and more than two bishops, rooks and knights.
2. En Passant - If a pawn moves forward two squares on its first move and lands in a space to the side of an opponent's pawn, the oppo-
nents pawn has the option of capturing the first pawn 'en passant' (which means 'in passing') on the opponent's next move. It does so by
moving diagonally behind the first pawn.
3. Castling - This move helps to protect a player's king and moves a rook into play. To castle, a player moves his king two squares over to
one side and then moves the rook from that side's corner next to the king on the opposite side. The move is allowed only if:
(1) it must be the king's very first move
(2) it must be the rook's very first move
(3) there cannot be any pieces between the king and the rook
(4) the king may not be in check or pass through check
H. GAME OVER
A game is won when one player checkmates the other. Checkmate occurs when the king of the player who is next to move is in check
and cannot move out of the check. B. USE OF BATTERY
1. Requires two 1.5 V AAA batteries (not included). 2. For best results, always use fresh batteries. 3. Make sure you insert the batteries with
the correct polarity. 4. Remove the batteries from the kit when not in use. 5. Replace exhausted batteries straight away to avoid possible
damage to the kit. 6. Rechargeable batteries must be removed from the kit before recharging. 7. Rechargeable batteries must be
recharged under adult supervision. 8. Make sure the supply terminals in the battery case are not short circuited. 9. Do not attempt to
recharge non-rechargeable batteries. 10. Do not mix old and new batteries. 11. Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc), or rechargea-
ble batteries. 12. Unscrew the battery case cover to replace batteries. Adult supervision is required.
1. Stretch the pulley belt around the large pulley on the turntable and the small pulley on the motor spindle of the spin painting machine.
2. Unscrew the battery cover and insert two 1.5 V AAA batteries into the battery compartment. Ensure that the batteries are inserted in
the correct direction (the flat end of the battery always goes against the spring in the case). Adult supervision is required.
I. FUN FACTS
• After three moves for each player, there are more than 9 million possible ways that the pieces can be arranged.

• The game of chess was invented around 1400 years ago in India.
• The modern chess board first appeared in Europe in 1090.

Your spin painting machine can be used for creating other fun craft projects. You may need some materials from home or craft store.
Adult assistance is required.
1. Spin Art Machine - Build an amazing spin art machine. Put the spin painting machine inside a box tray (you can use the package
box for this purpose) and fix it with adhesive tape or sticky putty. Use any paint at home, dilute the paint and put it inside a squeeze
bottle. Place a piece of paper on top of the spin painting machine adaptor and fix it with sticky putty. Switch on the machine and
drop the paint onto the spinning paper to create interesting spiral splash patterns. Or you can use the paint brush to create some
circular brush patterns.
2. Egg Painting - Put a plastic egg or any empty eggshell on the adaptor and fix it with sticky putty. Switch on the machine. Make sure
the egg spins upright. Now you can create beautiful stripe patterns on egg.
3. Paper Cone Painting -
You can create your own toy doll with a paper cone or paper cup. Fix the roll or cup to the centre of the
spinning wheel and fix it with sticky putty. Switch on the machine and adjust it to spin upright to create stripe patterns. Decorate it with
moving eyes, buttons or straws from home to make it an interesting paper doll. You can apply the same technique to create beautiful
stripes on mini flower pots.

3. Put a few small pieces of the adhesive tab around the edge of an adaptor plate (use a small adaptor plate for the small chess pieces
and a large adaptor plate for the large pieces). Position a chess piece at the centre of the plate. Press the chess piece down so that it is
fixed to the adaptor plate by the adhesive tabs. Adjust the chess piece so that it is standing upright.
4. Switch on the spin painting machine. Check that the chess piece is spinning perfectly upright around its center axis (if it's not it will
swing when it spins). Adjust the piece as needed. The spin painting machine will spin in both directions. Slide the switch to left side to
make it turn clockwise, and to the right side to make it turn anticlockwise. Use the direction that you prefer for painting. We suggest
anticlockwise for left-handed people and clockwise for right-handed people. Switch to the middle when not in use.
5. Now you can start to design and paint your chess pieces. Dip the brush into the paint colour that you like and then place the brush
gently on the spinning chess piece. Steadily move the brush up and down while the chess piece is spinning to complete painting the body
of the chess piece. Then create stripes of colour around the piece. Remember to create two unique patterns and apply them to make two
sets of pieces, one for each player in the game. Some suggestions for different patterns are provided. You may also refer to the box
package or simply use your own colour scheme creations. Just make sure you create two distinguishable patterns one for each player.
6. After you have painted each chess piece remove it together with the adaptor plate and let it dry. Repeat the painting process for the
other chess pieces.
7. After you have painted all the chess pieces and they are all dry, apply stickers to the pieces to complete them.
E. TROUBLE SHOOTING
1. Check that your batteries are fresh or freshly charged. 2. Make sure the pulley belt runs properly through the channels on the two
pulleys. 3. The pulley belt can replaced with a rubber band if it breaks. 4. If the paint becomes too hard and dry to apply properly, add
some water to it. 5. Tap the large pulley if you find it gets stuck and will not move.
F. BASIC CHESS RULES
1. The diagram shows the names of the different chess pieces.
2. Position the board so that each player has a white square in the lower-right corner and a black square in the lower left corner.
3. Arrange the chess pieces as in the diagram before each game.
King - The object of the game is to capture the opponent’s king. If a piece is in a position where it could take the opponent's king, the
king is in "check". If a player cannot move his or her king out of “check” then he or she loses the game. The king can only move one square
in any direction - up, down, to the sides, and diagonally.
Queen - The queen is the most powerful piece. The queen can move any number of spaces in a straight line in any direction (forward,
backward, side to side, and diagonally).
Rook - The rook can move as any number of spaces but only forward, backward, or side to side.
Bishop - The bishop can move any number of spaces but only diagonally. The two bishops start on different-coloured squares (light or
dark) and must always stay on their colours.
Knight - The knight moves in an “L” shape – two spaces in one direction (backward, forward or side to side) and then another space at
right angles to the first direction. The knight is the only piece that can jump other pieces.
Pawn - Pawns move and capture different ways – they can only move forward, but can only capture diagonally. A pawn moves forward
one space at a time except on its very first move where it can move forward either one or two spaces. A pawn captures by moving one
square diagonally – to either side but always forwards too. It cannot capture a piece straight in front of it.

ROOK
KNIGHT PAWN
Either player can make the first move. Pieces can move around the board as described below. Except for the knight, they cannot move
through any of their own pieces. If a player moves a piece to the square occupied by an opponent's piece then the opponent's piece is
captured and is removed from the board. All pieces except the king can be captured.
