1. Introduction
This document describes how to combine the FPTC-01 thermistor protection module (option +L536) or
FPTC-02 ATEX-certified thermistor protection module Ex II (2) GD (option +L537+Q971) with the FSPS-21
PROFIsafe safety functions module (option +Q986) in ACS880 drives.
The presented combination is not available with plus codes. You can order the FPTC-01/02 and FSPS-21
option modules as add-on kits:

2. Safety instructions
WARNING
Obey the safety instructions of the drive. If you ignore them, injury or death, or damage to
the equipment can occur.
Refer to the user’s manual.
If you are not a qualified electrician, do not do installation or maintenance work.
Obey the local safety regulations.

3. System overview
The FSPS-21 (+Q986) and FPTC-01/02 (+L536/+L537+Q971) safety module combination is available only
in ACS880 series drives. The combination provides these safety functions and safety values:
•STO (Safe Torque Off): SIL 3, PL e, PROFIsafe control. Refer to [1].
•SS1-t (Safe Stop 1): Time-monitored ramp stop, SIL 3, PL e, PROFIsafe control. Refer to [1].
•SMT (Safe Motor Temperature): SIL 2, PL c. Refer to [2].
The safety functions conform to these standards:
•EN/IEC 62061 – Safety of machinery – Functional safety of safety-related control systems
•EN ISO 13849-1 – Safety of machinery – Safety-related parts of control systems – Part 1: General
principles for design
•EN/IEC 60204-1 –Safety of machinery – Electrical equipment of machines – Part 1: General
requirements
•EN/IEC 61800-5-2 – Adjustable speed electrical power drive systems – Part 5-2: Safety requirements –
Functional

3.1. Intentional misuse
Use the ABB products according to the instructions in the applicable documentation. ABB is not
responsible for any damage caused by the misuse of its products. The products do not protect a
machine against intentional misuse or sabotage.

4. Connection procedure
WARNING
Do not attempt to connect the modules to the drive in any way other than the method
shown
in this document. If you do, injury or death, or damage to the equipment can occur.
Refer to the applicable user’s manuals for information on how to install the safety modules.
To connect the FPTC-01/02 and FSPS-21 modules to the ACS880 drive, strictly obey the wiring diagram
in Figure 1.

The FSPS-21 module is delivered with an STO cable (Figure 2):
•Four color-coded wires (red, black, yellow and white)
•Protective sleeve
•Yellow drive-side STO connector plug
•Black FSPS-21 STO connector plug

To connect the modules to the drive:
1. Disconnect the wires from the yellow drive-side STO connector plug.
2. Remove the protective sleeve from the STO cable.
3. Strictly obey the wiring diagram shown in Figure 1.
4. Connect the red wire to pin 1 on the drive-side STO connector plug.
5. Connect the black wire to pin 2 on the drive-side STO connector plug.
6. Connect the drive-side STO connector plug to the XSTO terminal on the control unit.
7. Connect the FSPS-21 STO connector plug to the FSPS-21 module.
8. Connect the yellow wire to FPTC-01/02 XSTO1:11.
9. Connect the white wire to FPTC-01/02 XSTO2:21.
10. Add an extra wire between FPTC-01/02 XSTO1:12 and pin 3 on the drive-side STO connector plug.
11. Add an extra wire between FPTC-01/02 XSTO2:22 and pin 4 on the drive-side STO connector plug.

4.2. Start-up procedure
Before you start the system, make sure that the motor temperature is less than the monitored
temperature limit and that the FPTC-01/02 module does not activate the STO function (STO circuit is
closed). Otherwise, the FSPS-21 module does not start correctly and keeps the STO function active. If
this happens, examine the motor, PTC sensor and wiring of the STO circuit, and either start the system
again or boot the FSPS-21 module with parameter 51/54.27.
When the motor temperature increases above the PTC sensor temperature limit, the sensor resistance
increases sharply. This indicates overtemperature to the FPTC-01/02 module. The FPTC-01/02 module
then activates the SMT function by opening the drive Safe torque off (STO) circuit. This activates the
drive STO function.
NOTICE
For the system to start, make sure that the FPTC module does not activate STO.
If the FPTC module has activated STO, the safety PLC does not know
of it (sPLC does not
communicate with FPTC). The Information is available through a normal PLC and drive
connection
.
I
f the FPTC module activates STO in the middle of SS1-t, the FSPS informs the safety PLC
that SS1
-t finished successfully.
4.3. Validation
To validate the system:
1. Validate the FSPS-21 module.
2. Validate the FPTC-01 or FPTC-02 module.
Strictly obey the validation instructions in the applicable documentation. Refer to [1], [2], [3].
