ABOUT THIS DOCUMENT
Introduction
A fluctuating voltage supply affects your productivity and the consistency of your operations, leading to a
reduction in the quality of your products and services. This can also lead to increased wear on machinery
components, resulting in a greater number of malfunctions and a reduced life expectancy of your equipment.
The PCS100 AVC-20 is an Active Voltage Conditioner designed to solve these problems. It is a high-performance
power electronic system that responds instantly to power quality events and provides online regulation of
voltage.
Using state of the art power electronics technology the regulation is step-less which minimizes disturbances and
ensures a regulated premium power supply for important loads.

1OVERVIEW
The ABB PCS100 AVC-20 is an inverter-based system that protects sensitive industrial and commercial loads from
voltage disturbances. Providing fast, accurate continuous voltage regulation and load voltage compensation, the
PCS100 AVC-20 has been optimally designed to provide effective, efficient voltage regulation where industrial or
commercial processes demand a clean, readily available, and consistent supply of power.
1.1. Cause of Voltage Sags
Electrical grids are comprised of two parts: transmission and distribution lines. This is due to the fact that the
traditional sources of energy and the consumption are geographically far apart. The strength of network
indicates the ability to withstand sudden changes. Long transmission lines to remote areas result in weak
network where sudden changes in the grid would lead to reduced quality of supply to users.
1.2. Nature of Voltage Sags
One of the ways a weak network manifests itself is unstable grid voltage. As a weak grid lacks the ability to
withstand sudden changes, the grid voltage fluctuates. This affects productivity and the consistency of
operations, leading to a reduction in the quality of products and services. This can also lead to increased wear on
machinery components, resulting in a greater number of malfunctions and a reduced life expectancy of
equipment.
High penetration of renewable energy, such as photovoltaic (PV) or wind, also threatens the overall stability of the
network as the amount of power generated from these sources is not constant.
Brownouts, overvoltage, and an unbalanced voltage supply, which are typical symptoms of a weak network,
results in poor use of resources in terms of staff, materials and energy consumption. It can also cause reliance on
costly back-up systems, such as diesel generators.

2FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
2.1 How it works
The PCS100 AVC-20 is a three-phase low voltage product which provides effective, efficient voltage regulation
where industrial or commercial processes demand a clean, readily available, and consistent supply of power. The
PCS100 AVC-20 requires no energy storage as it draws the additional current required to make up the
compensating voltage from the utility supply.

2.2 Regulation Capabilities
he PCS100 AVC-20’s performance with undervoltage is adaptive to load conditions. Based on the loading of the
unit or load power factor the PCS100 AVC-20 fully regulates undervoltage from down to 80% of the nominal
voltage.
Detailed regulation capabilities are shown in the following table.

If the utility voltage deviates beyond +/- 20%, the PCS100 AVC-20 will still provide continuous regulation to as
close to nominal voltage as possible, ensuring trouble free operation of the protected equipment.
The adaptive approach to performance enables users to select the unit based on the load or based on the
required output voltage accuracy

2.4 Single Line Diagram
The PCS100 AVC-20 consists of a voltage source inverter driving a series connected injection transformer which is
installed between the supply and the load. It measures the incoming supply voltage and provides almost
instantaneous regulation for any deviation.
The PCS100 AVC-20 incorporates a bypass system which is used in the event of a fault situation outside of the
PCS100 AVC-20 specifications. Should the inverter become overloaded the bypass system shunts the injection
transformer, relieving the load from the inverter. The voltage delivered to the load under bypass is therefore equal
to the utility voltage.

2.5 Operation Detail
The following diagrams show how the PCS100 AVC-20 behaves when a utility disturbance occurs, and what
happens if the fail-safe bypass operates.
2.5.1 Utility Voltage Deviates from Nominal
When the utility voltage deviates from nominal or set point due to undervoltage, overvoltage, or unbalance the
inverter will inject a regulation voltage via the injection transformer. The regulation voltage level is based on the
disturbance level and the energy required for regulation is derived from the utility via the PCS100 AVC-20 rectifier.

2.1.2 Internal Bypass Operation
In the case of an external overload or internal fault condition the internal bypass circuit will shunt the inverter side
of the injection transformer, bypassing the inverter and effectively providing a direct connection from the utility
supply to the output, without interruption to the load.

3MODEL DEFINITION
3.1 Type Code
The PCS100 AVC-20 Type Code is given in
the product tables. The Type Code is a
unique code for the specific PCS100 AVC-
20 model and specifies all the components
that are used to construct the model.
From the base code given in the product
tables options can be added to the Type
Code. These options are called plus (+)
codes.
The diagram on the right outlines the
structure of the Type Code:

3.1.1 Rated Voltage
This is the rated voltage of the PCS100 AVC-20.
The standard voltage is 400 V.
Other operating voltages (i.e., 380V) are achieved by software settings and setting of an auxiliary transformer
tapping.
3.1.2 Power Rating
Rated power of the system based on the number of power module pairs. Each power module pair operating on
rated voltage provides 500 kVA of power.
Note: Operation at lower than the rated voltage results in less kVA per module pair. Consult the rating tables for
more information.
