The No. 1021/4021Residential Alarm System monitorsallinputsandgeneratesappropriateoutputsignals. lt provides
3 supervisedzones ofburglaryprotection,asupervisedfire zone,andatwenty-fourhouremergencycircuit (silentemer-
gencyor audiblepanic).Italso provideszonestatusandalarmmemory indications.The entry delay may be reducedto
zero.Abuilt-inspeakerinthe No.4021providesaudiblealannannunciation.
The No. 5240Digital Keypad &ion(s) permitarminganddisarmingofthesystem aswell as providingarming/disarm-
ingstatusindication.Asilent(oraudible)emergency(panic)alarmmay alsobetriggeredandthe Interiorzone may be
turnedOFFandthen ONfromthe DigitalKeypadStation(s).A built-inbuzzerprovidesaudibletroubleannunciation.
Note: EarlyproductionNo.5240swith noREDjumperprovidedontheir circuitboardsmay not be usedwith the No.
1021/4021.
Alternatively, keyswitch(es)/pushbutton(s) may be used for arming/disarming, either aloneor intermixedwith key-
padstations(ata maximumof 4 locations).Althoughthese instructionsprimarilydiscuss the useof keypadarming/dis-
arming,Diagram7 indicateshow keyswitches/pushbuttonsmaybeused.Notethat a No. 706 Mini-Howlerwill be

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION: (See Diagrams 2 and 3)
Switches:
ENTRYDELAY ON/OFFSwitch (INSTANTOFF/ONon 4621):Toset the entrydelayto zero, movetheswitch down
momentarily(LEDlit).Torestoreittotheselectedtime,moveit upmomentarily(LEDout).This switch isoperativeonly
whenthe system isarmed.A safetyfeature,however,automaticallyrestoresthe entrydelay at disarmingtime.This pre-
ventsthe userfromsubsequentlyamringthe systemandleavingthepremiseswithout restoringthe entry delay,thereby
causinganalarmuponre-entry.
FIRETEST/RESETSwitch: Thisswitchshorts thefire loopto initiatean alarmwhenmomentarilypushedupwardto
TESTposition.Themainalarmsoundershouldfunction,givinganindicationof batterycondition.The FIRETEST is reset
byoperatingthe FIRETEST/RESETswitch momentarilydownwardto RESETposition.This downwardoperationresets
thefirecircuit andsmokedetectorspoweredbythesystem.Inaddition,it is usedto clearthe memoryofalarmin the sys-
tem’szonestatus LEDsandinthe paniccircuit (refleotedbyabsenceof GREENstatusLED indicationat No.5240local
orremotekeypads).
EMERGENCYPushbutton (aNo. 4621option): Depressingthe BLUEPoliceShieldpushbuttonwill activatea
panicalarm.The speakerinthe No.4021andexternalspeaker(s)will be activated(loudwarbling speakersound)
immediately,ifaudiblepanicwas selected.Forbothaudibleandsilentpanic,asupplementaloutputtriggerwill beimme-
diatelyactivated.
FtREPushbutton (aNo. 4021option): Depressingthe RED Flamepushbuttonwill activatethe firealarm.The speaker
intheNo.4021andexternalspeaker(s)will beactivated(loud,steadyspeakersound)immediately,aswellas afire indi-
catingsupplementaloutputtrigger.
LED Indicators:
FireLED(RED)This LEDflashesto indicatetroubleinthe Firezone.At thetimethatthis occurs, the buzzerinthe No.
5240willbeginto soundintermittently.Theseindicationswill remainuntilthefauftiscleared.
Thefaultcouldhavebeencausedbyoneofthefollowing:
a)A malfun&tionwithinasmokeorproductsofcombustiondetector.
b)A breakinoneofthefire loopwires.
c) A breakinoneofthewires supplyingpowerto detectors.
d)Ablownauxiliaryoutputcurrentprotectionfuse.

Perimeter, interior and Entry/Exit (Delay) Zone LEDs (RED): TheseLEDsindicatethe statusoftheir respectivezones.
A litLEDindicatesthat a loopis inafault condition.Evenwhenthe InteriorZoneisOFF,thatzone’sLEDwill still indicate
status.These LEDsalso providea memoryofalarmif a loopisfaulted inthearmedstateandthefault restores.This
memoryremainsuntilthe FIRETEST/RESETswitch is movedmomentarilyto RESR:

Thiskeypadis integralto the No.4021andisremotelylocatedforthe No.1021andoptionallyforthe No.4021.
Keys 1-9: These areusedto enterthe4 digitarm/d&am/panic cutoffcode.
Note: Audiblepaniccutoff is immediatewhenthecodeentry is maddwhilethe systemis armedandoccurs3
secondsaftercodeentry whenthe system is disarmed.
KEY0: This key is usedtoturnoffthe interiorZone if it is depressedwithin3 secondsaftertheentry ofthe fourth digitof
thearmingcode.This is usefulwhenit is desiredto armthesystem withthe premisesoccupied.The PerimeterandEntry/
Exit(Delay)zoneswillthen provideprotection.Subsequenttothis action,depressionofthe “0” key by itselfwill remove
the Interiorzone bypass.The InteriorZonemaynotbeturnedOFF after the systemis armed.lf it is desiredto reapplythe
bypass,itwould thenbe necessaryto disarmthesystem andto repeatthe initialarming/interiorbypassfunction.Asafety
featureexists that automaticallyrestoresthe InteriorZoneat disarmingtime.Thisguardsagainstthe userinadvertently
leavingthe InteriorZoneoff indefinitely,reducingthe levelof protectionprovided.

INSTALLATION AND WIRING:

Description
Burglary Protection Zones: Foreachtone, runapairofwires fromthatzone’s
terminalsto allprotectionpointsinthezoneandterminatewith a 1000ohmEnd-of-
LineResistor(supplied).Eachloophasnormal response to closedcircuitdevices
(suchas magneticcontacts,foil, etc.)connectedinseries. Inthe Perimeter Zone,
forfast response to quickactingdevices (suchasvibrationcontactsandphoto-
electricunitswithoutbuilt-indelays),cut the YELLOWjumper wire onthe unit’s
chassis(Interior Zone: Cut the REDwire for fast response). _
Note: Iffast responseisselected,the loopshould notcontaindeviceswith
exposedmetalliccontacts(tolessenthe chanceoffalse alarms).
An openorshort inthe InteriororPerimeterloopwillcausean immediatealarm
whenthe systemis ON.
Deviceswith0per-1circuitcontacts(suchas mats) maybeconnectedbetweenthe
wiresofeitherloop.(Donot useanAdemcoNo. 602MatCoupler).
Maximumpermissibleresistanceineachloop: 300ohms(plusthe 1000ohmEnd-
of-LineResistor).
Burglary Protection Zone: Forthiszone, runapairofwiresfromthezone’ster-
minalstoall protectionpointsinthezone.The loophasnormal response to
closedcircuitdevicesconnectedinseries.An openintheloopHiillcauseanalarm
afterthe’entrydelayperiodhasexpired,unlessthe entrydelayhasbeenturned
OFFviathe ENTRY DELAY(INSTANT)switch.
Fire Protection Zone:
Run the supervised fire detection loop from theseterminalsto all U.L.Listed
thermostats,smokedetectors,combustiondetectorsorotherfire detedtion
devicesto beused. Runsupto 500feet maybe madewith #22 wire. Runonecon-
tinuousloop(nobranches)throughalldevices, connectinganytroublerelaycon-
‘tacts inserieswiththe loopandnormallyopenalarmcontacts acrossthe loop’s
two wires.Atthe lastdevice,terminatethe loopwiththe 1000ohm end-of-line
resistor(furnished)anda No.633Supervisory Module.
Note: Lowcurrentsmokeand/orcombustiondetectorssuch as the Nos.622-6,
623-6andNo.632Hshouldbeused.NFPAStandardNo. 74requires
theuseof at leastonesmokeorcombustiondetectorin every
residentialinstallation.
Emergency Input: Connectopencircuit momentaryemergencyswitches (e.g.:
Nos.219and4023)inparallelacrosstheseterminals.If none.areused,leave
theseterminalsempty.
Momentaryoperationof oneoftheseswitches at anytime (systemarmedordis-
armed)will causethe panicSupplementalOutputTriggerto be produced.Theinte-
gralspeakerinthe No.4021andtheexternalsirenspeaker(s)will soundaloud
warblingtone.ifthe audibleoptionhasbeenselected(see“Option Selection” later
inthissection).
Inorderto obtainthe abilityto activateapanic alarmfroma remoteNo.5240com-

Arm/Disarm Code
1. Select afour digit Arm/Disarm code. Thecodemayconsistofanyfourdigitsfrom 1to 9 (e.g.:2158).Codescon-
taining repeatdigitsmay notbe used(e.g.:2258,2553, etc.)Donotusezero(0).
Stationson multipleunitinstallationsmaybecodeddifferentlyfromeachother,ifdesired.
2. Program each No. 5240for its assignedcode,asfollows. (Note: inthefollowingexamplethe No.5240is being
programmedforcode5-2-4-9):
a. Remove the No, 5240’s cover (with a No. 4021,lift out the No. 5240from the unit’s base) andpositionit so
thatthe circuitboardwithinthe wver appearsasshowninDiagram5.
b. Observe the “Code Digit Selection Wires”, thefour4 inchsolidconductorwiresatthe left sideofthecircuit
board.Thecolorsare BROWN,RED,ORANGEandYELLOW.
c. Observe the 10pin connector belowthe rightedgeofthe PCboard.Itsholesareassdciatedwithdigitvaluesof
0through9 asindicatedin Diagram5. Notethatthe holesarenotnumberedsequentially.
d. Simply insert the BROWN wire in the connector hole which corresponds to the numerical value selected
for the first digit (“5” in Diagram5’sprogrammedexample).
e. Similarly insert the RED, ORANGE and YELLOWwires in the holes for ?he2nd, 3rd and 4th digits respec-
tively (“2”, “4” and“9” inDiagram5’sprogrammedexample).
f. Insert five of the six WHITE wires into each remaining connector hole exceptfor “O”,which will haveawire
insertedthat isconnectedto upperboardterminal 11for InteriorZonebypass.OneWHITE wire will notbeused.

g. Cut the REDjumper onthe No.5240,asindicatedinDiagram5 (thisjumper ispre-cuton unitsprovidedwith the
No.4021).Note: EarlyproductionNo.5240swithout a REDjumpermaynot beused.
h. Replace the No. 5240’s cover (reinstall the No. 5240in the base of the No, 4021)untilreadyto complete
the installation.

1. Connect the battery inthe No.1021/4021to the Molexconnectoronthe panel’sRED andBLACK leads.,
Note: Checkthatthe REDArmingStatusLED atthe No.5240is notlit. Ifit is lit, itshouldbeextinguished bykeying

2. Plug the transformer into a 120V.AC outlet that is ON24 hours aday. The A.C. POWERLED shouldlight.
3. Observe the ZONE STATUSLEDs. Nonewill belit ifthe protectiveloopsare properlywiredand allcontacts are

4. When all ZONE STATUSLEDs are out, do the following and observe the appropriate LED light in each case.
a. Openthe PERIMETERZONEloop momentarily. The PERIMETERZONE LEDshouldlightwhilethe loopis
open.Repeatforthe INTERIORandDELAYZONEloopsandLEDs.
b. Short the Perimeter Zone momentarily. The PerimeterZone LEDshould lightwhilethe loop isshorted.
Repeatforthe InteriorZoneloopandLED.
5. Observe the FlRE LED. ItshouldbeOFFifthe protectiveloopanddetectorpowercircuits areproperlywired.
6. Check the FIREcircuit operation as follows:
a. Disconnect one wire of the Fire loop. The FHE LEDon the No. 1021/4021shouldflash and an intermittent
buzzshouldbeheardfromthe No.5240(s).
b. Re-connect the Fire loop wire. The FIRELEDshouldgo outandthe intermittent “buzz” should cease, indicat-
ingzone restore.
c. Momentarily short the Fire loop. Afire alarmshouldbetriggeredaccompaniedby a loudsteady siren sound
fromboththe internal(inthe No.4021)andexternal(ifused)speakers. Inaddition.the FIRE LED should
belitsteady.
Silencethe alarmby momentarilyactivatingthe FIRETESTRESET switch to the RESETposition.
Note: The battery maynotbefully charged.If this test is tried with a low battery there will not be enough
power to sound the externalsirens. Lettheunitcharge(transformerpluggedin)for at leastone-haff
hourifthe battery is low.
7. Test the Panic Circuit by momentarilyshortingterminals9 and 10or by operatinga panicswitch. The interior(in
the No.4021)andexteriorspeakershouldsound (warblingsirensound)ifthe audibleoptionis selectedandthe \
No.5240’sGREEN LoopStatusLEDshouldturn off.Theseconditionscontinueafterthe short is removed.Reset :t-
thecircuitby keyingthe arm/disarmcode’ andthenturnonthe LEDby momentarilyactivatingthe FIRETEST/
RESETswitchto the RESETposition.
*Note: Cutoffwill beimmediateifthesystemwas armedandwill occurafter3 seconds ifthesystem
was disarmed.
. 8.;Arm the syr&n by enteringthearmingcodeatthekeypad.The’RED Arming StatusLEDshoirl;dligtitsteadily.
Immediatelydepressthe “0” keyandthe ArmingStatusLEDwill flash, indicatingthatthe system hasbeenarmed
withthe InteriorZoneturnedoff.
9. Depress the ENTRYDELAY OFF(INSTANT)Switch on the No. 1021(4921).The LEDtothe left of it shouldlight.
Disarmthe system. Notethat theENTRYDELAY(INSTANT)andtheArming StatusLEDsgo out, indicatinga
restoraloftheentry delay.The InteriorZonehasalsobeenrestored.
10. All the zone contacts may now be checked by disturbingeachcontactineachzoneandobserving the
statusindicators.
11. Arm the system and disturb acontact. Thewarblingsirenshouldsound.
12. Disarm the system.
13. Check the operation of the supplementary output triggers.
14. Momentarily disconnect the AC power to the system. The A.C. POWERLED onthe No. 102114021shouldgo
out butthe system shouldremainoperable.
15. Arm the system and simulate leaving the premises byfollowingthe proceduregiven inthe
OPERATIONSection.
16. Simulate entering the premises and disarm the system by followingthe proceduregiveninthe
OPERATIONSection.

THE POWERLED ONTHE No. 1021/4021SHOULD BE LIT AT ALL TIMES. Ifout,A.C. failure isindicatedandthe
systemisoperatingonbattery.Checkplug-intransformerorfor powerfailure(orcallserviceman).
IMPORTANT:Wait at least 5seconds between successive attempts at arming or disarming with the No.5240or it
will notbepossibleto successfullyenterthe nextdisarm/armcode. Exception: The 5 secondwaitcanbe
eliminatedbykeyingany digitnot usedinthe 4digitcodeandthen the code.
To-Arm Burglary System :
1. Makesure the A.C. POWERLED is lit.
2. If remaining on premises after arming, the InteriorZone(see4 below)andENTRYDELAYmaybeturnedOFF
ifdesired.
Note: The InteriorZonemaynotbeturnedOFFafter arming(althoughturningit ON is permissible).The ENTRY

faultoranalarmis inmemorywhich mustbecleared(orthe INTERIORturnedOFFvia the No.5240ifthe Interior
ZoneLEDislit andtheproblemcan’tbecorrected)beforethe systemcanbearmed.Makesurethe exitdooris
closed! If nozone LEDsarelitandthe LoopStatusLEDis NOTlit,it isan indicationthat alarmmemory (i.e.panic)is
stillpresent.Activatethe FIRERESETswitchdownwardto clearmemory
4. Enter the arming code at the No. 5240(followedby “0” within3 seconds ifthe InteriorZone isto beturnedOFF).
The REDArmingStatusLEDshouldlightsteadily(orflash ifthe InteriorZoneisturned OFF).The Perimeterand
InteriorZonesarm‘immediatelyandthe Entry/Exit(Delay)Zone’sexitdelay periodbegins.
If athree second steady buzz sounds atthe No.5240,itindicatesthat armingis beingattemptedwithafaufted
zone. ffthefault is inthe InteriorZoneandthe “0” keyisdepressedduringthe3seconds,the buzzwill ceaseand
the REDArmingStatusLEDwill remainlit. Ifthe buzzcontinuesto its conclusion,the ArmingStatus LEDwill not
staylitandthe systemwas notarmed!
5. If leaving the premises, depart before the exit delay period ends, via the entry/exit door.

To Disarm Burglary System:
1. Whenentering the premises, enter only via the entry/exit door. A steadybuzzingwill sound(ata No.5240)dur-
ingthe entrydelayperiod.Godirectlyto a No.5240andenterthedisarmcode.
2 If already within the premises, enter the disarm code at a No. 5240.
3. Observe if any of the ZONELEDs on the No. 1021/4021are lit (will be lit if an intrusion alarm has taken place
during the armed period). Ifthefault conditionsarenolongerpresent,operationofthe FIRETEST/RESETswitch
tothe RESETpositionwillturnoff theZONELEDs.
Note: Whilethe systemisdisarmed,the GREENLoopStatusandREDZONESTATUSLEDswill goonandoff as
the protectiveloopsopenandcloseduringnormaloperationofdoors,windows,etc.
To Test Fife System:
Thefiresystemshouldbetestedat leasteveryweek.
Important: Ifthefiresystemisconnectedto’a centralmonitoringstation,they shouldbealertedbeforeconducting
anytest.
1. Push the FIRETEST/RESETswitch onthe No. 1021MO21upward to Test and hold it. Thefire alarmwillsound
(loudsteadysiren),the FIRELEDonthe No. 1021/4021will lightandthefire alarmsupplementaloutputtriggerwill
beproduced.Duringthetest,the battery ischeckedbythe soundingofthe speakersfromthe battery Releasethe
switch:the soundshouldcontinue.
2. Reset the system by operating the FIRETEST/RESETswitch momentarily downward to the RESETposition.
To Test Burglary System:
Theburglarysystemshouldbetestedasfollowsatleastevery month:
Important: Ifthesystemisconnectedto acentralmonitoringstation,they shouldbealerted beforeconductinganytest.
