BATTERYREPLACEMENTINSTRUCTIONS
ForSafeWatch®3000,Vista‐10,Vista‐20,Concord4,ConcordExpress,
DSC1555andDSC1616ResidentialControlPanels
The ADT SafeWatch®3000, Vista, Concord and DSC residential security systems
have a backup battery designed to supply power to the security system during a
limited power outage. The battery, much like a car’s battery, must be replaced from
time to time due to age and usage. The backup battery needs to be replaced when
the keypad displays a “BAT” or “SYSTEM LO BATTERY” message.
In most cases you can replace the battery yourself, typically saving you time and
money. The process requires the removal of two wires from the old battery and
reconnecting the same wires to the new battery. Before replacing the battery, please
read these instructions carefully, including the Battery Safety Warning instructions
below.
BatterySafetyWarning
ThissectiononBatterySafetyshouldbereadinitsentiretyanditscontentsunderstoodbefore
handlingorusingarechargeablesealedlead‐acidbattery.

•Duetothepotentialenergystoredinasealedlead‐acidbattery,improperhandlingoruseof
thebatteryorfailuretoobservetheprecautionslistedinthisdocumentmayresultinbodily
injurycausedbyelectrolyteleakage,heatgenerationorexplosion.
•USEELECTRICALLYINSULATEDTOOLS.Useofun‐insulatedtoolsmaycauseashortcircuit
andtheheatorsparksgeneratedbytheshortcircuitcanresultinburns,damagetothe
battery,oranexplosion.Metallictoolsmaybeinsulatedusingvinylorelectrician’stape.
•Whenunpackingthebattery,makesuretohandleitgently.Roughhandlingmayshockthe
battery,causingdamage.Checkthatthebatteryisfreefromcracks,fractures,orleakage.
•Beextremelycarefulnottodropthebatterytoavoidthepossibilityofseriousinjury.
If at any time you feel uncertain that you can follow these instructions or want to
have the battery replaced by an ADT service technician, contact the ADT
Customer Care Department at 1-800-ADT-ASAP and schedule a service
appointment. In most cases, ADT’s standard service charge will apply.
Requesting a Replacement Battery
If you choose to replace the battery yourself, contact ADT at 1-800-ADT-ASAP to have
a replacement battery sent to you or you can purchase one at a local battery supply
store. If there is a lock on the control panel door and you do not have a key, inform
the ADT Customer Care Representative and a key will be sent to you.

ControlpanelThecontrolpanelbatteryislocatedinsideacontrolpanelboxsimilartothe
oneshowninthepicturebelow.Thecontrolpanelboxistypicallylocated
insideacloset,basementorutilityroominyourhome.


Backupbattery

Thebackupbatterycouldbeofoneoftwosizes,eithera4Ahora7Ah
size.Thepicturebelowshowsthetwobatterysizesandthelocationofthe
wireterminals.



Uponreceiptofthereplacementbattery,followthestepsbelowtoreplace
thecontrolpanelbattery.
StepAction
1EnsureyouhaveyourPersonalIdentificationCode(PIC)andthencalltheADTCustomerCare
Departmentat1‐800‐ADT‐ASAPtorequestthatyoursecuritysystembeplaced“ontest”.
2Openthecontrolpanelbox,eitherbyremovingthescrews ontheside ofthecoverorwiththe
controlpanelkey.Note:Thephotobelowdoesnotshowalloftheinternalcomponentsandwiring.
Yourcontrolpanelmayalsolookdifferentfromthephoto.


3Examinethebatteryinside.
3.1Thereplacementbatterywillbethelarger7Ahsize.Removethenewbatteryfromthecarton
anddetermineifthereisenoughroominsidethecontrolpanelboxtoaccommodatethebattery.
•Ifyes,gotostep4.
•Ifthe7Ahbatterydoesnotfitinsidethecontrolpanelboxclosethecontrolpaneldoorandcall1‐
800‐ADT‐ASAPtoscheduleaservicecallandtorequestthatthesystembe“removedfromtest”.
3.2Doesthebatterylookabnormal;(Caution:Doesthebatteryhaveaswollenorsplitcase,liquidis
leakingfromthecase,theterminalsarecorrodedorahotcase)?
•Ifno,gotostep4.
•Ifyes,closethecontrolpaneldoorandcall1‐800‐ADT‐ASAPtoscheduleaservicecallandto
requestthatthesystembe“removedfromtest”.
4Disconnecttheoldbattery.
Caution:BesuretoreadtheBatterySafetyWarningatthebeginningoftheseinstructionsbefore
disconnectingthebackupbattery.

StepAction
4.1PulltheBLACKwire’sconnectorfromthenegative(−)batteryterminal.Thismayrequire
plierswithelectricallyinsulatedhandles.Theconnectormayneedtobewiggledslightly
forittoloosenandbecomedisconnected.
4.2PulltheREDwire’sconnectorfromthepositive(+)batteryterminal.Thismayrequire
plierswithelectricallyinsulatedhandles.Theconnectormayneedtobewiggledslightly
forittoloosenandbecomedisconnected.
4.3Removetheoldbatteryfromthecontrolpanelbox.
Warning:Donottotouchanymetalobjectstotheterminalsonthebatteryortothe
open‐endoftheblackandredwireconnectors.


5Placethenewbatteryinsidethecontrolpanelbox.

5.1Ifthereplacementbatteryhasplasticterminalprotectors,remove thembeforeconnecting
thewirestothebattery.
5.2ConnecttheREDwiretotheRED terminalofthenewbatterybypushingtheconnector
firmlyontotheterminal.IfyoudonotseeaREDcoloredterminal,lookcloselyatthetop
ofthebatteryforapositivesign(+)nexttotheterminalandconnecttheREDwiretothe
positive(+)terminal.
5.3ConnecttheBlackwiretotheBlack terminalofthenewbatterybypushingtheconnector
firmlyontotheterminal.IfyoudonotseeaBlackcoloredterminal,lookcloselyatthetop
ofthebatteryforanegativesign(‐)nexttotheterminalandconnecttheBlackwiretothe
negative(‐)terminal.

6Gotoyouralarmkeypadtomakesurethatitnolongerdisplaysa“BAT”or“SYSTEMLOBATTERY”
message.Doesyoursecuritysystemdisplayeitheroneofthesemessages?
•Ifno,gotostep7.
•Ifyes,thebatterymayneedtorechargeforashorttime;waitonehourandcheckagain.Ifeither
the“BAT”or“SYSTEMLOBATTERY”messageisstilldisplayedpleasecallADTat1‐800‐ADT‐ASAP
toscheduleaservicecallforaservicetechniciantoinspectyoursecuritysystem.
7Testyoursecuritysystemtomakesureitisworking proper.Followtheinstructionsinthe
SafeWatch®Pro3000,Vista‐10orVista‐20“User’sGuide”inthe“TestingtheSystem”section.Did
youexperienceanyissuesduringthesystemtest?
•Ifno,gotostep8.
•Ifyes,pleasecallADTat1‐800‐ADT‐ASAPtoscheduleaservicecallforaservicetechnicianto
inspectyoursecuritysystem.


8Closethecontrolpaneldoorandreplacethescrewsorlockthedoor.
9CalltheADTCustomerCareDepartment at1‐800‐ADT‐ASAPandrequestthatthesystembe
“removedfromtest”andthatnormalmonitoringberesumed.
10Disposeofthebatteryappropriately.

