Instructions
1. Read these safety instructions carefully.
2. Keep this User Startup Manual for later reference.
3. Disconnect this equipment from any AC outlet before cleaning. Use a damp cloth. Do not use
liquid or spray detergents for cleaning.
4. For plug-in equipment, the power outlet socket must be located near the equipment and must
be easily accessible.
5. Keep this equipment away from excess humidity.
6. Put this equipment on a reliable surface during installation. Dropping or letting it fall may
cause damage.
7. The openings on the enclosure are for air convection. Protect the equipment from
overheating. DO NOT COVER THE OPENINGS.
8. Make sure the voltage of the power source is correct before connecting the equipment to the
power outlet and earth the connection. Ensure to connect the power cord to a socket-outlet
with an earth connection.
9. Position the power cord so that people cannot step on it. Do not place anything on the power
cord.
10. If the equipment is not used for a long time, disconnect it from the power source to avoid
damage by transient overvoltage.
11. Never pour any liquid into an opening. This may cause re or electrical shock.
12. Never open the equipment. For safety reasons, all repairs to the device may only be carried
out by trained service personnel.
13. If one of the following situations arise, have the equipment checked by a service person:
• The power cord or plug is damaged
• Liquid has penetrated into the equipment
• The equipment has been exposed to moisture
• The equipment does not work
• The equipment has been dropped and damaged
• The equipment has obvious signs of breakage.
14. CAUTION: The computer contains a battery-powered real-time clock circuit. There is a
danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with same or equivalent
type recommended by the manufacturer. Discard used batteries according to the
manufacturer’s instructions:
(1) Risk of Explosion if Battery is replaced by an incorrect Type. Dispose of used
batteries according to the instructions.
15. IF THE COMPUTER IS PROVIDED WITH A CD DRIVE (or Laser Product). COMPLY WITH
APPROPRIATE SAFETY STANDARDS INCLUDING IEC 60825-1 or EN 60825-1:
(1) Avoid direct exposure to the laser beam. Do not open the laser device
enclosure. There are no user serviceable components inside.
(2) Do not operate controls, make adjustments, or perform procedures to the
laser device other than those specied herein.
(3) Allow only authorized service technicians to repair the laser device.

16. This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC rules. Operation is subject to the following two
conditions:
(1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and
(2) This device must accept any interference received, including interference that
may cause undesired operation.
17. CAUTION: Always disconnect the power cord from your chassis whenever you work with the
hardware. Do not make connections while the power is on. Sensitive electronic components
can be damaged by sudden power surges.
18. CAUTION: Always ground yourself to remove any static charge before touching the
motherboard, drives, or add-on cards. Modern electronic devices are very sensitive to static
electric charges. As a safety precaution, use a grounding wrist strap at all times. Place all
electronic components on a static-dissipative surface or in a static-shielded bag when they
are not in the chassis.
19. CAUTION: This product is not intended for use by children (this product is not a toy).
(1) This equipment is not suitable for use in locations where children are likely to
be present.
20. Repair of the device may only be carried out by trained service personnel. Advantech
recommends that a service contract be obtained with Advantech Service and that all
repairs also be carried out by them. Otherwise the correct functioning of the device may be
compromised.
21. CAUTION: Do not modify this equipment without authorization of the manufacturer.
22. CAUTION: To avoid risk of electric shock, this equipment must only be connected to supply
mains with protective earth.
23. CAUTION: Remove the power cord to fully turn off the device.
24. CAUTION: Never immerse equipment or electrical connectors in water or other liquids.
25. Observe local occupational health and safety requirements and guidelines for manual
materials handling.
26. CAUTION: Disposal of a battery (or battery pack) into a re or a hot oven, or mechanically
crushing or cutting of a battery (or battery pack) can result in an explosion! Leaving a battery
(or battery pack) in an extremely high temperature surrounding environment that can result in
an explosion or leakage of ammable liquid or gas. A battery (or battery pack) subjected to
extremely low air pressure may also result in an explosion or leakage of ammable liquid or
gas. Discard used batteries according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
27. CAUTION: Any changes or modications not expressly approved by the party responsible for
compliance could void the user’s authority to operate this equipment.

Instructions
1. Lisez attentivement ces consignes de sécurité.
2. Conservez ce Manuel de démarrage de l’utilisateur pour référence ultérieure.
3. Débranchez cet équipement de toute prise secteur avant de le nettoyer. Utilisez un chiffon
humide. N’utilisez pas de détergents liquides ou en aérosol pour le nettoyage.
4. Pour les équipements enchables, la prise de courant doit être située à proximité de
l’équipement et doit être facilement accessible.
5. Gardez cet équipement à l’abri de l’excès d’humidité.
6. Placez cet équipement sur une surface able lors de l’installation. La laisser tomber ou la
laisser tomber peut causer des dommages.
7. Ne laissez pas cet équipement dans un environnement non conditionné où la température de
stockage est inférieure à 0 °C (32 °F) ou supérieure à 40 °C (122 °F), car cela pourrait causer
des dommages.
8. Les ouvertures sur l’enceinte sont destinées à la convection d’air. Protégez l’équipement

9. Assurez-vous que la tension de la source d’alimentation est correcte avant de connecter

10. Placez le cordon d’alimentation de manière à ce que personne ne puisse marcher dessus. Ne
placez rien sur le cordon d’alimentation.
11. Si l’équipement n’est pas utilisé pendant une longue période, débranchez-le de la source
d’alimentation pour éviter tout dommage dû à une surtension transitoire.
12. Ne versez jamais de liquide dans une ouverture. Cela peut provoquer un incendie ou un choc
électrique.
13. Ne jamais ouvrir l’équipement. Pour des raisons de sécurité, toutes les réparations sur
l’appareil ne doivent être effectuées que par du personnel de service qualié.
14. Si l’une des situations suivantes se présente, faites vérier l’équipement par un technicien de
maintenance:
• Le cordon d’alimentation ou la che est endommagé
• Du liquide a pénétré dans l’équipement
• L’équipement a été exposé à l’humidité
• L’équipement ne fonctionne pas
• L’équipement est tombé et a été endommagé
• L’équipement présente des signes évidents de bris.
15. ATTENTION: L’ordinateur contient un circuit d’horloge en temps réel alimenté par batterie. Il y
a un danger d’explosion si la pile n’est pas remplacée correctement. Remplacez uniquement
par un type identique ou équivalent recommandé par le fabricant. Jetez les piles usagées
conformément aux instructions du fabricant:
(1) Risque d’explosion si la batterie est remplacée par un type incorrect. Jetez les piles
usagées conformément aux instructions.
16. SI L’ORDINATEUR EST FOURNI AVEC UN LECTEUR DE CD (ou un produit laser).
RESPECTER LES NORMES DE SÉCURITÉ APPROPRIÉES DONT IEC 60825-1 ou EN 60825-
1:
(1) Évitez l’exposition directe au faisceau laser. N’ouvrez pas le boîtier de l’appareil
laser. Il n’y a aucun composant réparable par l’utilisateur à l’intérieur.
(2) N’utilisez pas de commandes, n’effectuez pas de réglages ou n’effectuez pas de
procédures sur l’appareil laser autres que celles spéciées ici.
(3) N’autorisez que les techniciens de service agréés à réparer l’appareil laser.

17. Cet appareil est conforme à la partie 15 des règles de la FCC. Le fonctionnement est soumis
aux deux conditions suivantes :
(1) Cet appareil ne doit pas causer d’interférences nuisibles, et
(2) Cet appareil doit accepter toute interférence reçue, y compris les interférences
susceptibles de provoquer un fonctionnement indésirable.
18. ATTENTION: Débranchez toujours le cordon d’alimentation de votre châssis lorsque vous
travaillez avec le matériel. N’effectuez pas de connexions lorsque l’appareil est sous tension.
Les composants électroniques sensibles peuvent être endommagés par des surtensions
soudaines.
19. ATTENTION: Mettez-vous toujours à la terre pour éliminer toute charge statique avant de
toucher la carte mère, les disques ou les cartes d’extension. Les appareils électroniques
modernes sont très sensibles aux charges électriques statiques. Par mesure de sécurité,
utilisez en permanence un bracelet de mise à la terre. Placez tous les composants
électroniques sur une surface antistatique ou dans un sac antistatique lorsqu’ils ne sont pas
dans le châssis.
20. ATTENTION: Ce produit n’est pas destiné à être utilisé par des enfants (ce produit n’est pas
un jouet).
(1) Cet équipement n’est pas adapté à une utilisation dans des endroits où des enfants
sont susceptibles d’être présents.
21. La réparation de l’appareil ne peut être effectuée que par du personnel de service qualié.
Advantech recommande qu’un contrat de service soit conclu avec Advantech Service et
que toutes les réparations soient également effectuées par eux. Dans le cas contraire, le bon
fonctionnement de l’appareil peut être compromis.
22. ATTENTION: Ne modiez pas cet équipement sans l’autorisation du fabricant.
23. ATTENTION: Pour éviter tout risque d’électrocution, cet équipement ne doit être connecté
qu’à une alimentation secteur avec mise à la terre de protection.
24. ATTENTION: Retirez le cordon d’alimentation pour éteindre complètement l’appareil.
25. ATTENTION: N’immergez jamais l’équipement ou les connecteurs électriques dans l’eau ou
d’autres liquides.
26. Respecter les exigences locales en matière de santé et de sécurité au travail et les directives
relatives à la manutention manuelle des matériaux.
27. ATTENTION: L’élimination d’une batterie (ou d’un bloc-batterie) dans un feu ou un
four chaud, ou l’écrasement ou le découpage mécanique d’une batterie (ou d’un bloc-
batterie) peut provoquer une explosion ! Laisser une batterie (ou un bloc-batterie) dans un
environnement à température extrêmement élevée pouvant entraîner une explosion ou une
fuite de liquide ou de gaz inammable. Une batterie (ou un bloc-batterie) soumise à une
pression d’air extrêmement basse peut également entraîner une explosion ou une fuite de
liquide ou de gaz inammable. Jetez les piles usagées conformément aux instructions du
fabricant.

1.1 Introduction
The small form factor “VALOR” chassis is designed for mission critical
applications. A wide range of standard computing peripherals can be
integrated with these chassis to accommodate different applications in rugged
environments.

sure to turn off the power, unplug the power cord, and ground yourself by touching
the metal chassis before you handle any components inside the machine.

1.1 Introduction
The VALOR system is designed with the Intel Q470E/W480E/H420E for industrial
applications that require both performance computing and enhanced power management
capabilities. The motherboard supports Intel Xeon W series; Intel Core i7/i5/i3; Pentium and
Celeron processor up to 20 MB L3 cache and DDR4 3200 MHz up to 128GB, per slot up to
32 GB. A rich I/O connectivity of 6 serial ports, 6 USB 2.0, 4 USB 3.2 Gen2, 6 USB 3.2 Gen1
and up to dual GbE LAN Dual 10GbE LAN, up to 8 SATA III ports.
1.2 Features
• Rich I/O connectivity: up to dual GbE LAN via PCIe x1 bus, up to dual 10GbE LAN via
PCIe x4, 1 x PCIe x16 slot (Gen 3) BOM option to 2 x PCIe x8 slot (Gen 3), 1 x PCIe x4

1.4 Jumpers and Connectors
Connectors on the AIMB-587 motherboard link it to devices such as hard disk drives and a
keyboard. In addition, the board has a number of jumpers used to congure your system for your
application.
The tables below list the function of each of the board jumpers and connectors. Later sections
in this chapter give instructions on setting jumpers. Chapter 2 gives instructions for connecting
external devices to your motherboard.
