A VERSATILE, POWERFUL TESTING DEVICE BUILT INTO A CONVENTIONAL PHONE
TEMS Pocket collects measurements and event data for immediate
monitoring or for processing by other tools at a later time.
Its combination of small size and powerful testing features makes
TEMS Pocket a unique product. Because TEMS Pocket is designed as an in-
tegral part of the phone, it can be used continually, not only by engineers
and technicians, but by people throughout the operator’s organization.
Because many users employ TEMS Pocket as their primary phone,
operators can constantly and reliably capture data from all areas of the
mobile network.
The tool is installed in a range of phone models. TEMS Pocket 7.3 is
installed on the superb new Sony Ericsson W995 and W995a and is also
available in a GSM-only configuration on the W995 EDGE.
An integrated TEMS solution
TEMS Pocket works with TEMS™ Investigation and TEMS™ Automatic to
provide the most complete solution for network optimization. TEMS Pocket
generates data with the same level of detail as TEMS Automatic MTU and
TEMS Investigation logfiles, and TEMS Pocket data can be analyzed in both
products as well as in TEMS™ Discovery. This allows for great flexibility in
network monitoring and promotes multiple uses of the same data.

powerful product for verification,
monitoring, and troubleshooting of
mobile networks and also for basic
cell-planning tasks. All these
capabilities are integrated into
commercial handsets which can be
used both as everyday phones and
as testing devices, allowing anyone
to collect data in a very
convenientway.

Engineers can now collect valuable information
with normal handsets, at any time, and at any site. All
this translates into more-efficient overall use of the
operator’s network monitoring equipment.
It is possible for the TEMS Pocket software and the
TEMS Investigation software to be combined in the same
mobile. The network information recorded by the phone
can then be used with either tool.
With the new features in TEMS Pocket models for
the Sony Ericsson W995 line, operators can make their
workforces more effective by providing them the best
tools on the market.
Continuing to build on the success of TEMS Pocket
for the Sony Ericsson C905, we are proud to introduce
TEMS Pocket for Sony Ericsson W995 with the following
functional enhancements:
Scan mode
TEMS Pocket Professional offers the option of a
scan mode that can be used to visualize the surrounding
networks at any location. Simply set the device to scan
mode, perform the scan, and watch as the surrounding
information is presented directly in the phone’s display.
Command sequence improvements
A new configuration makes the command sequence
more flexible and introduces additional services. It com-
bines actions including voice, video, idle, FTP, and with
this release, HTTP and streaming, into a sequence of test
cases. The TEMS Pocket-equipped phone device is now a
data collection probe that achieves consistent testing
with minimal effort. The user simply starts a script and
the phone mimics user patterns in the performance of
various services.
Alternate data upload via WiFi
Built-in WiFi capabilities enable the user to achieve
even more effective over-the-air data uploads than ever
before. The user activates the WiFi and connects to the
network from any location. As soon as the user enters a
WiFi area, TEMS Pocket senses its presence, makes a
connection, and uploads all collected logfiles to a selected
FTP server with no user interaction required. This provides
an alternate data upload channel that is fast, cheap, and
easy to configure.
Event based data collection
Logfiles can be stored dependent on content
(events or tags) during passive monitoring of user
sessions or when a command sequence is used.
HSUPA support
The Sony Ericsson W995 and W995a models support
HSPA technology to both measure and utilize the
extended uplink capacity.
AMR-WB support
With the Sony Ericsson W995 models, it is now
possible to utilize the superior audio quality offered by
AMR-WB while obtaining an overview of the audio
quality that can be achieved with the new codecs.
GSM/EDGE support
One TEMS Pocket 7.3 package supports only GSM
networks, ensuring that operators who have not deployed
WCDMA have a solution that fits their needs.

TEMS Pocket Classic is the most basic package. It performs real-time
monitoring of the mobile network with results displayed directly via
graphical symbols. This is the ideal test tool for the field engineer who has
no need to record information for later processing.
TEMS Pocket’s mobile standby display clearly presents essential
network data as well as channel information and performance measurements
during WAP browsing. It generates network event notifications of abnormal
situations. These are indicated by audio so that no event is missed, even
when the phone is in the user’s pocket or purse.
With the recent introduction of graph monitors, TEMS Pocket Classic
presents not only the current status of the network but also the history of
measurements. This allows trends to be monitored and read easily and
accurately. TEMS Pocket Classic provides control functions including locking
on RAT; locking on cell, channel, and band; modifying cell-barred behavior;
controlling voice codec; and controlling technology capabilities where they
are supported by the device.

TEMS Pocket Professional is designed for the professional RF engineer
who wants to carry the best available tool. It has all the features of TEMS
Pocket Classic with additional functions that make it extremely cost-effec-
tive and convenient for network measurements. TEMS Pocket Professional
can also record network data together with GPS information, and can per-
form scripted voice, video, and data testing. This version of TEMS Pocket
also allows manual setup of service testing to troubleshoot services such
as e-mail, MMS, and SMS. The captured information can be transmitted over
the air for efficient integration with TEMS post-processing tools as well as
with a number of well-known third-party products.
To further improve the uploading of data, the phone can be configured
to use WiFi, making uploads simpler, faster, and more convenient.
TEMS Pocket Professional can capture data in areas that are difficult to
cover during traditional drive-testing. The product provides options to perform
indoor-environment measurements quickly and easily. In three simple steps,
indoor measurement data can be collected and prepared for import into TEMS
Investigation or TEMS™ Discovery for extensive analysis.
Another valuable option that can be added to TEMS Pocket Professional
is a powerful scanner that places extensive data-gathering capabilities in
the palm of the user’s hand. With just a few clicks, the user’s phone can
present detailed information about the surrounding networks.

TEMS Pocket Remote acts as a remotely controlled test probe to
capture data without affecting the use of the device as a conventional
phone. The user is completely undisturbed by the testing functions. This
version of TEMS Pocket, fully integrated into the TEMS Automatic solution, is
remotely controlled from well-known user interfaces. Control is achieved via
work orders sent directly to the device as it unobtrusively collects network
data wherever the user goes.
Data is collected at scheduled times and presented in TEMS Automatic.
Because the monitoring and data collection functions are completely
unattended, anyone who carries TEMS Pocket Remote while moving through
the service area contributes to improved network quality.
With TEMS Pocket Remote, measurements can be configured in both
active and passive modes. In active mode, calls are made for the specific
purpose of testing. In passive mode, the system captures the device user’s
actual voice calls and HTTP sessions automatically and non-intrusively, with
no user intervention required. Combining the two modes makes it possible
to analyze individual situations in great detail, providing information to
solve specific problems and to improve the whole network.
TEMS Pocket Premium is the advanced configuration that is the most
versatile TEMS Pocket package. The tool can perform measurements both as
an unattended remote probe for TEMS Automatic or as a real-time device
with the same capabilities as TEMS Pocket Professional. TEMS Pocket
Premium users can switch between the two modes easily for a flexible,
powerful measurement solution.
