Your new Zapper Tornado BT™ or BT 2D™
Thank you for choosing the ASP Zapper Tornado BT™or Zapper Tornado BT 2D™
Bluetooth Cordless Imager Scanner. Powered by a combination of cutting-edge
Imaging Technology and Bluetooth 2.1 EDR wireless technology, it not only provides
outstanding reading performance, but also delivers the convenience and freedom of
mobility. This document provides a quick reference for installation and operation
purposes.
Now available Battery-Free with SuperCap!
The Zapper Tornado BT and Zapper Tornado BT 2D are now available with a Battery-
Free option, powered by an innovative SuperCap capacitor, which is a swappable and
interchangeable alternative power source to the standard Li-ion battery.
Compared to the standard Li-ion battery, the SuperCap has a much longer lifespan, so
it not only reduces e-waste for a healthier planet, but also lowers the total cost of
ownership. By adopting this green power source, you can promote your company’s
commitment to environmental sustainability. The SuperCap provides the largest
capacity and highest number of scans per full charge in its category, making it ideal for
a broad range of uses and applications.

Before you use your new scanner
Please note that your Zapper Tornado BT or BT 2D will be shipped to you with the
battery or SuperCap already charged and fitted, and the scanner and cradle set up for
PAIR mode. All you need to do is plug the cradle in to a USB port and start using it!
Charging the battery or SuperCap
1. Plug the AC power plug into the appropriate AC wall
socket.
2. Plug the DC power cord of the power supply unit into the
DC power jack of the cradle. The cradle will issue the
power on beeps and the center indicator will give one blue
blink. If you use the charging cradle, please check the
power indicator of the charging cradle turns steady blue.
3. Place the scanner in the cradle. The status indicator will
turn steady red if the battery or SuperCap is not fully
charged. When the battery or SuperCap is fully charged,
the status indicator of scanner will flash green at regular
interval.
Please charge a new battery pack for at least five hours prior to
the first use, or a new SuperCap for at least an hour.
Installing a new battery or SuperCap
1. Undo the screw on the grey end cap, and remove the end
cap.
2. Gently tap the scanner until the battery or SuperCap slides
out.
3. Ensure the contacts of the new battery or SuperCap are
facing the charging contacts inside the battery cavity.
4. Slide the battery or SuperCap into the battery cavity until it
clicks into place. The scanner will give four beeps when
the battery or SuperCap is installed properly if it still has
charge.
5. Re-fit the end cap and fasten it in place with the screw.
Make certain that the end cap is secured properly before
using the scanner.

Using USB Bus Power
If your host device has USB 3 ports available, both battery/SuperCap charging and
regular operation can be supported by the USB bus power without using the provided
external power supply.
If only USB 2 is available in your host device, you must use the provided power supply
as the power source. The available power of standard USB 2 ports is not enough to
support both battery/SuperCap charging and regular operation simultaneously.
Bluetooth Modes
The Zapper Tornado BT and Zapper Tornado BT 2D Bluetooth image scanners default
to PAIR mode, where the scanner communicates with its cradle, and the cradle
connects to your PC via USB. Instructions for PAIR mode are on the following page.
The scanner can also work in PICO mode, where multiple scanners can communicate
with a single cradle, or in HID mode, where the scanner communicates directly with
Bluetooth-enabled devices such as PDAs or portable computers, without using the
cradle.Note that PICO and HID modes require special configuration barcodes based
on the scanner and/or the cradle Bluetooth MAC addresses, which cannot be included
in a general purpose manual such as this. Please contact ASP or your dealer if you wish
to operate your equipment in these modes.

Setting up PAIR Mode
Make sure that the unit is fully charged, and plug the cradle into your computer.
If your scanner was shipped together with the cradle, please note that your scanner
and cradle have been paired already. The scanner link indicator will blink blue every
2.5 seconds, and the middle indicator of the cradle will be steady blue. This means
everything is ready to go, and you don’t need to do anything else.
If the scanner and the cradle both show alternating red and green blinks (“Uninstall”
state), please follow the steps below to establish a connection between the scanner
and the cradle.
If your cradle has a PAIR barcode underneath
If you have a cradle with a PAIR barcode underneath, use these instructions.
1. If the scanner is not already blinking red and green, scan the Uninstall barcode
below.
Uninstall
2. Scan the PAIR barcode underneath the cradle. This will start the pairing process
during which the scanner will emit a series of clicking sounds, and its link indicator
will flash blue rapidly.
3. Once pairing is completed, the scanner will beep four times in ascending tone, and
its link indicator will flash blue every 2.5 seconds. The cradle’s centre indicator will
be steady blue.
Note: If your cradle does not have a PAIR barcode underneath, use the instructions on
the next page.
The default host interface of the cradle is USB HID. If you want to set the host
interface to USB COM, you have to install a USB virtual COM driver into your host
device before using the scanner. Please contact ASP for this software driver.

3. Place the scanner into the cradle. You will hear one short beep to indicate the
pairing process is activated. The scanner will emit a series of clicking sounds and its
link indicator will flash blue rapidly.
4. When you hear four beeps in ascending tone, the pairing process is completed. If
scanner link indicator is now blinking blue every 2.5 seconds, and the middle
indicator of the cradle is now steady blue, you’re finished – stop here!
If the scanner pairing process fails (or the scanner was not placed on the cradle within
20 seconds), you will hear two “Dee-doo Dee-doo” beeps to indicate pair failure. At
this stage, you need to get both the scanner and the cradle back into “Uninstall” state
with both showing alternating red and green blinks.
5. If the scanner is not blinking red and green, scan the Uninstall barcode below.
Uninstall
6. If the cradle is not blinking red and green, press and hold down the cradle
paging/reset button for about five seconds (until the cradle beeps).
7. If both the scanner and the cradle are now blinking red and green, go back to step
2 above.
The default host interface of the cradle is USB HID. If you want to set the host
interface to USB COM, you have to install a USB virtual COM driver into your host
device before using the scanner. Please contact ASP for this software driver.

Out-of-range Scanning
When the radio is connected between the scanner and the remote host device, the
scanner will transmit each scanned data right after scanning the barcode. However, if
the scanner loses the radio connection with the remote host device, it is configured to
be unable to scan any barcode data.
If you enable the out-of-range scanning function, the scanner can continue scanning
barcode data while it is out of working range. The scanned data will be temporarily
stored into the memory buffer until radio link is restored.
Enable Out-Of-Range scanning
Disable Out-Of-Range scanning
If the scanner moves out of working range, you will hear four beeps in descending tone
to indicate the radio connection has been lost. The scanner’s link indicator will give
three blue blinks every 2.5 seconds. Once the scanner returns to working range, you
will hear four beeps in ascending tone to indicate the radio connection is restored and
the scanner will give one blue blink every 2.5 seconds. At the same time, all stored
scanned data will be transmitted automatically right after the radio link is resumed.
Presentation Scanning
Presentation Scanning is designed for hand-free applications. If the “Presentation
Scanning Auto-sense” function is enabled, the scanner automatically switches to
presentation mode when you place it onto the Smart Stand or cradle.

Batch Scanning (Inventory Mode)
Thanks to the specially designed Batch Scanning function, the scanner is capable of
storing up to 20,000 EAN-13 labels. It is an ideal cost-saving solution for inventory
applications.
Once you scan the “Enter Batch Scanning” command below to activate this function,
all scanned barcode data will be stored in memory, and the scanner’s status indicator
will blink green at regular interval during batch scanning. You can scan and store
barcode data until memory storage is full. If memory storage is full, you will hear two
long beeps and the status indicator will give two red blinks to indicate memory full.
You must download the scanned barcode data before you can continue.
To exit from batch scanning mode, scan the “Exit Batch Scanning” command.
