PRODUCT WARRANTY
AnalyticalTechnology,Inc.(Manufacturer) warrantstothe Customerthatifanypart(s)
ofthe Manufacturer's equipmentprovestobe defectiveinmaterialsorworkmanship
withinthe earlierof18 monthsof the dateof shipmentor12monthsof the dateofstart-
up,suchdefectivepartswillbe repaired orreplacedfreeofcharge.Inspectionand
repairstoproductsthoughttobe defectivewithinthewarrantyperiodwillbe completed
atthe Manufacturer's facilitiesinCollegeville,PA. Productson whichwarrantyrepairs
arerequired shall be shippedfreight prepaidtothe Manufacturer. The product(s)willbe
returnedfreightprepaidandallowed ifitisdeterminedbythe manufacturerthatthe
part(s)failed duetodefectivematerialsorworkmanship.
Thiswarrantydoesnotcoverconsumableitems,batteries,orwearitemssubject
toperiodicreplacement includinglampsandfuses.
Gassensorscarrya12 monthsfromdateofshipmentwarrantyandaresubject
toinspectionforevidenceofmisuse,abuse,alteration,improperstorage,orextended
exposuretoexcessivegasconcentrations.Shouldinspection indicatethatsensors
havefailed duetoanyoftheabove, the warrantyshall notapply.
TheManufacturerassumesnoliabilityforconsequentialdamagesofanykind,
and thebuyerbyacceptanceofthisequipmentwill assumeall liabilityforthe
consequencesofitsuseormisusebythe Customer, hisemployees, orothers. A defect
withinthe meaningofthiswarrantyisanypartofanypieceofaManufacturer's product
whichshall,when suchpartiscapableof beingrenewed,repaired,orreplaced,operate
tocondemnsuchpieceofequipment.
Thiswarrantyisinlieu ofall otherwarranties(includingwithoutlimitingthe
generalityofthe foregoingwarrantiesofmerchantabilityand fitness foraparticular
purpose),guarantees,obligationsorliabilitiesexpressed orimplied bythe Manufacturer
oritsrepresentativesand bystatuteorruleoflaw.
Thiswarrantyisvoidifthe Manufacturer's product(s)hasbeensubjecttomisuse
orabuse,orhasnotbeen operatedorstoredinaccordancewithinstructions,orifthe
serialnumberhasbeenremoved.
AnalyticalTechnology, Inc. makesnootherwarrantyexpressed orimpliedexcept
asstated above.

Part 1 - Introduction
1.1General
TheModelQ46/76isaversatileon-line monitoringsystemdesigned forthe
continuousmeasurementofturbidityinwater.It isintended forcontinuous
monitoringofpotablewaterfilteroutlets,rawwaterinlets,orturbiditymonitoring
ofwastewatereffluent.
Thefull scaleoperating rangeofthe systemis0-400 NTU.Actualdisplayrange
isuserprogrammablefor0-4,0-40,or0-400,and thesystemcan alsobe
programmed todisplayinunitsofPSLforapplicationswherepolystyrene latex
spheresarethe standardofmeasurement. Thebasicsensingelementused in
the turbiditysystemisan opticalsensormeasuringlightscatteredat90degrees
tothe transmitted beam.The sensorprovidesan auto-zeroingfunction toinsure
the highest sensitivityat verylowturbiditylevels.
Q46/76 Monitorsareavailableintwoelectronicversions,an ACpowered monitor
withintegralalarmrelaysand dual4-20 mAoutputcapability,and a12-24 VDC
unitwithdualoutputand relays.Optionsareavailabletoaddeitherathird4-20
mAoutputor3additionallowpowerSPSTrelays.Inaddition,adigitaloutput
optionforProfibus, Modbus,orEthernet isavailable.
1.2Standard System
ThestandardmodelQ46/76systemincludestwocomponents,theQ46 analyzer
and an opticalsensorwith30 ft. cable.Formostfiltereffluentapplications,the
sensormustbe usedinaflowchambertoavoiderrorsdue toambientlight. For
wastewatereffluentapplications,asubmersiblesensorisavailable.When
necessary,ATI’sQ-Blastair cleaningassemblycan be used withthe
submersiblesensortoreducemanualcleaning.
Forconnection ofthe sensortothe electronics,a30'cableissupplied.Uptoan
additional100feetofinterconnectcablemaybe added using#07-0100junction
box.

matrixcharactersforclearmessagedisplaytwooffourmeasuredparameters
maybe on the displaysimultaneously.
·Diagnosticmessagesprovide acleardescription of anyproblemwithno
confusingerrorcodestolookup.Messagesarealsoincluded fordiagnosing
calibration problems.
·Securitylock featuretoprevent unauthorized tamperingwithtransmittersettings.
All settingscanbeviewed whilelocked,buttheycannot bechanged.

Part 2 – AnalyzerMounting
2.1General
All Q46 Seriesinstrumentsoffermaximummountingflexibility.Abracketis
included witheachunitthatallowsmountingtowallsorpipes.Choosealocation
thatisreadilyaccessibleforcalibrationsand keep inmindthatitwill be
necessarytousesolutionsduringthe calibration process.Totakefull advantage
ofthe highcontrastdisplay,mounttheinstrumentinalocation wherethe display
can beviewed fromvariousanglesand longdistances.
Locatethe instrumentincloseproximitytothe pointofsensorinstallation -this
will alloweasy access duringcalibration.Thesensor-to-instrumentdistance
shouldnotexceed 100feet(30 m).Tomaximizesignal-to-noiseratiohowever,
workwiththe shortestsensorcablepossible.The standardcablelengthofthe
turbiditysensoris30feet.

2.2Wallor PipeMount
APVCmountingbracketwithattachmentscrewsissuppliedwitheach
transmitter(seeFigure2fordimensions).Themulti-purposebracketisattached
tothe rearoftheenclosureusingthe fourflathead screws.The instrumentis
then attachedtothewall using the fouroutermountingholesinthe bracket.
Theseholesareslottedtoaccommodatetwosizesofu-boltthatmaybe used to
pipe mountthe unit.Slotswill accommodateu-boltsdesigned for1½“or2”pipe.
Theactualcentertocenterdimensionsforthe u-boltsareshowninthe drawing.
Notethattheseslotsareforu-boltswith¼-20 threads.The1½” pipe u-bolt(2”
I.D.clearance)isavailablefromATIintype 304 stainlesssteelunderpart

2.3Panel Mount,ACPoweredMonitor
PanelmountingofanACpowered monitorusesthepanelmounting flange
molded intothe rearsection of theenclosure.

panelmountingbracketkitmustbeorderedseparately(partnumber05-0068).
Thiskitcontainsametalretainerbracketthatattachestotherearofthe
enclosure,4screwsforattachmentofthisbracket, and asealinggaskettoinsure
thatthemonitorflangeprovidesawatertightsealwhen mountedtoapanel.
Thesealinggasketmustfirstbe attached tothe enclosure.The gasketcontains
an adhesiveon one side sothatitremainsinplace.Removethe protective
paperfromthe adhesiveside ofthe gasketand slide the gasketoverthe backof
the enclosuresothatthe adhesiveside linesup withthe back ofthe enclosure
flange. Onceinplace,you can proceedtomount the monitorinthepanel.

3.1General
Themajorityofturbidityapplicationsrequirethe useofaflowcell assembly.This
method isbestwhen monitoringverylowturbidityvalues,suchasfiltereffluent.
Theflowcell used withATI’sturbiditysystemisdesigned toeliminateambient
lighteffects,andtoallowsamplepressuretobemaintainedthroughtheflowcell
minimizingair bubbleformation that cancausemeasurement errors.A bracket is
suppliedformountingthe flowcell toanyflat surface.
3.2FlowcellMounting
Figure6providesflowcell dimensions.Notethattheflowcell shouldalways
bemountedhorizontallywiththeinleton thebottom and outleton thetop.
Selectaflowcell location withsufficientclearancebelowtoallowinstallationof
the inletcalibration valvetofacilitateadjustmentofthe systemafterinstallation.
See Figure9forthe suggested tubingarrangement.

3.3RawWaterFlowcell
Turbiditymonitoringofrawwaterwithpotentiallyhighturbiditylevelscannot be
doneusingthestandardflowcell. Forthiskindofapplication,you need aflow
chamberthatdoesnotcontainverysmall restrictionsliketheflowcontrolvalve
on the top ofthe standardflowcell. Fortheseapplications, you mayuseeither
the flowtee assemblyinthefollowingsection oramodifiedflowcell referred toa
the “rawwaterflowcell”. Thisflowcell ismodified tobypass the flowcontrol
orificeandallowsampleswithhighturbidityvaluestoflowthroughthe flowcell
without plugging. Thisflowcell uses¼” I.D. sampletubingwithstraight through
portsasshownbelow.

3.4In-LineInstallation
Turbiditysensorsmaybe installed directlyintoaflowingpipe systemprovided
thatthe waterdoesnotcontainalotofentrained air.A 1 ½” flowteeassemblyis
availableforthispurpose.Itisbesttoinstall the sensorinaverticalpipe section
withwaterflowingupward.Thisassuresthatair pocketscannotdevelop atthe
sensor.Ifinstalled inahorizontalrun ofpipe,placethe sensoratthe 3or9
o’clock position.Nevermountthesensoronthetoporbottomofthe pipe.Itis
alsogood practicetoinstall abypass systemaround the sensorformaintenance
and calibrationpurposes.
It shouldbenoted thatin-line installation isnotrecommended when normal
turbiditylevelswill be below0.5NTU.

3.5SubmersibleInstallation
Thestandardturbiditysensormayalsobeused forsubmersioninstallations.
Notethatturbiditysensorsmaybeaffectedbybrightambientlight
conditions. Ifsubmergedsensorsaretobeusedoutdoors,alwaysuse the
Auto-Cleanversion ofthesensor as itcontainsalightshieldtominimize
these effects. A specialadapterisavailableformountingthe turbiditysensorto
a1”pipe. Figure13 belowshowsatypicalsubmersion mountingusingATI’s00-
1690submersion mountingkit. Thiscompletekit adaptstotypicalhandrails.
Thepipeadapteronlyispart no.00-1689 and isavailableseparatelywhen the
handrail mountingkit isnot required.

4.1General
TheQ46 ispowered inone oftwoways,dependingon theversion purchased.
The12-24VDC powered analyzerrequiresacustomersuppliedDC power
supply.The90-260VACversion requiresline power.Pleaseverifythetypeof
unit beforeconnectinganypower.
WARNING:DonotconnectAClinepowertotheDC version. Severe
damagewill result.
ImportantNotes:
1. Usewiringpracticesthatconformtonational,stateandlocalelectrical
codes.Forpropersafetyaswell asstablemeasuringperformance,it
isimportantthatthe earthgroundconnection be made toasolid
ground pointonTB7.TheACpowersupplyinthe transmittercontains
asingle630mAslo-blofuse(Wickmann/Littlefuse#372-0630).The
fuse F1 islocated adjacent to TB7 andiseasilyreplaceable.
2.DoNOTrunsensorcablesorinstrument4-20 mAoutputwiringinthe
sameconduitthatcontainsACpowerwiring.ACpowerwiring should
be runinadedicatedconduittopreventelectricalnoisefromcoupling
withthe instrumentationsignals.
3.Thisanalyzermustbeinstalledbyspecificallytrained personnelin
accordancewithrelevantlocalcodesandinstructionscontained inthis
operatingmanual.Observethe analyzer's technicalspecificationsand
inputratings.Properelectricaldisconnectionmeansmustbeprovided
priortotheelectricalpowerconnected tothisinstrument,suchasa
circuitbreaker-rated 250 VAC,2Aminimum.Ifone line oftheline
powermainsisnotneutral,useadouble-polemainsswitchto
disconnect the analyzer.
4.Repeated problemswithlightningstrikesdamagingsensitive
instrumentation areoften attributedtopoorlybonded earthgroundsin
the instrumentpowersource.Theprotection schemesincorporated
intothisanalyzercannotoperatetomaximumefficiencyunless the
ground connection isat its’absolutelowest impedance.
