Configuring the Backup and Restore operations on the
Avaya G250 and G350 Media Gateways - Issue 1.0
Abstract
Avaya G250 and G350 Media Gateways support the backup and restore operations in Release
4.0 of Avaya Communication Manager. The backup operation can back up configurations and
other files to a backup directory on a USB flash drive. When the Avaya G250 or G350 Media
Gateway is replaced, the Media Gateway can be restored from a USB flash drive. These
Application Notes present detailed information on how to perform the backup and restore
operations.

1. Introduction
Avaya G250 and G350 Media Gateways support the backup and restore operations in Release
4.0 of the Avaya Communication Manager. The backup and restore operations are supported
using the USB flash drive. When an Avaya G250 or G350 Media Gateway is replaced, the Media
Gateway can be restored.
Figure 1 is the network diagram used for the verification of these Application Notes. Three
offices shown in Figure 1 are connected via a Wide Area Network (WAN). T1/PPP is used in
each office for the WAN connection. A full-mesh VPN (any-to-any), Generic Routing
Encapsulation (GRE) tunnles and OSPF routing protocol are configured among the three offices.
The box labeled “Main Office” contains an Avaya S8500 Media Server and an Avaya G650
Media Gateway. The box labeled “Branch Office 1” contains an Avaya G250L-DS1 Media
Gateway and the box labeled “Branch Office 2” contains an Avaya G350L Media Gateway.
The Avaya G250 and G350 Media Gateway are configured as the DHCP and TFTP servers for
the Avaya IP telephones in the branch offices. The Microsoft DHCP server and Avaya TFTP
server installed on the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server in the Main Office are used for the
Avaya IP telephones in the Main Office. The Apache HTTP Server installed on the Microsoft
Windows 2000 Server is used for the Avaya 9600 IP telephones. For the sample configuration,
802.1X is enabled on the Avaya G250 and G350 Media Gateways and the Avaya IP telephones
in the branch offices, the Microsoft Internet Authentication Service (IAS) installed on the
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server in the Main Office is used a Radius Server.
Refer to [1] for detailed configuration of the Avaya G250 and G350 Media Gateway.

Figure 1: Configuration for Backup/restore operation
The backup and restore operations are supported on the USB flash drive only and are not
supported on an external file server (TFTP, FTP, etc.).
The following files are supported for the backup.
•Startup configuration: startup_config.cfg
•IP Phones: 46xxsettings.txt, 46xxupgrade.scr
•ASG authentication file: auth-file.cfg
•VPN license file: vpn_license.cfg
•Gateway Announcements
•Voip Parameters: audio.bin
Figure 2 summarizes the Media Gateway Backup/Restore Directory Structure, which is created
when a backup is performed. When the Avaya Media Gateway is configured as a TFTP server
for the Avaya 4600 IP telephones, the related TFTP files must be placed under the sub-directory
IPPHONE. The sub-directory MM is used to place the voice media module firmware and
GWANNC is used for the announcement files.
Files marked in Red are not backed up but can be restored. To be able to restore the files in Red,
move the flash drive to a PC and manually copy the files to the appropriate directory in the flash
device. These files are available at the Avaya support Web site http://support.avaya.com or the
Avaya Communication Manager installation CD drive.

3. Configuration
The backup and restore operations are the same for the Avaya G250 and G350 Media Gateways.
This Section describes the Backup and Restore procedures for the Avaya G350 Media Gateway.
The same approach can be followed with the Avaya G250 Media Gateway.
For the sample configuration, the Avaya G250 and G350 Media Gateways are configured as
TFTP server for the Avaya 4600 IP telephones.
The backup and restore operations are supported on the USB flash drive only and is not supported on an
external file server (TFTP, FTP, etc.).
3.1.1. Backup Operation for the Media Gateway
Connect a terminal to the console port of the Media Gateway. At the command prompt, use the
command dir to show all the files on a Media Gateway. Note that some of the files are stored in
NV-RAM and others in the RAM. The files in the RAM (in red) cannot survive a reset. The
phone images files are lost after a reset. The supported backup files are marked in bold black.

To back up the Avaya G350 Media Gateway, insert a USB flash drive into the USB port on the
Avaya G350 Media Gateway. Use the command show usb all to verify that the Avaya G350
Media Gateway detects the USB flash drive. The Media Gateway supports FAT16 and FAT32
file systems on the USB flash drive. The flash drive needs to be formatted with one of these
formats.

Use the command backup config usb usbdevice0 <directory name> to back up the files to the

directory and sub-directory on the USB drive based on the Backup/Restore Directory Structure
in Figure 2.

Please refrain from any other operation during this time.
For more information, use 'show backup status' command.
Use the command show backup status to check the backup status. The Avaya G350 will copy
the files into the appropriate directories shown in Figure 2. The following screen shows that
startup_config.cfg and vpn_license-file.cfg are copied to the backup-G350 directory. A sub-
directory IPPHONE is created based on Figure 2, and the IP telephone configuration files
46xxupgrade.scr and 46xxsettings.txt are copied to the IPPHONE directory on the USB drive.
For the sample configuration, these are the only files being backed up. The Avaya G350 Media
Gateway image and phone image files cannot be backed up.

Use the command dir usbdevice0 <directory> to display the backup directory. The following
shows a typical backup file system format. A readme.txt file is created in the backup directory
as part of the backup operation at the end of a successful backup process. As shown in the
following screen, the sub-directories named IPPHONE, GWANNC and MM are automatically
created. Since the current release does not support the backup operation for the firmware of the
voice media modules, there are no files under the MM directory. The announcement and ASG
authentication files can be backed up, but are not shown in the sample. Note that the 46xx
firmware files, gateway firmware, and the Embedded WEB image (for Avaya G350 Media
Gateway only) also cannot be backed up.

3.1.2. Restore Operation on the Same Media Gateway
Since the backup directory does not include 46xx firmware files, Media Gateway firmware,
voice media module firmware files, it is recommended to build up the restore directory structure.
A PC can be used to place these files on the USB flash drive in the appropriate directories based
on Figure 2.
When the Media Gateway’s relevant files are included in the restore directory, a single
CLI/Management command restore usb <usb-device> <backup-name> restores all these files.
Note the administrator can always copy an individual file from the restore directory to the Media
Gateway. The restore operation only restores the files available in the restore directory, and the
restore directory does not have to include all the files.
Since all the data media modules on the Avaya G250 and G350 Media Gateways are part of the
Avaya Media Gateway firmware, there is no separate firmware available for the data media
module. The firmware for the voice media module in the restore directory does not apply to the
Avaya G250 Media Gateway, since the Avaya G250 Media Gateway does not support any voice
media module.
If the administrator needs to upgrade the files in the restore directory, do not do a backup to the
existing restore directory. The backup operation to the exiting restore directory will delete all the
files in the restore directory and create a new backup directory. The administrator can first back
up to a different directory (other than the existing restore directory) on the USB flash drive, and
then replace the old files with the updated ones.
For the sample configuration, the original backup directory backup-G350 is renamed to
Restore-G350-06IS50008465 (06IS50008465 is the serial number of the Avaya G350 Media
Gateway). The Avaya G350 Media Gateway firmware, phone image files and Voice MM
firmware are copied into the appropriate directories, based upon the Backup/Restore Directory
Structure in Figure 2.
The following two screens show the restore directory on the USB flash drive. Use the dir
command to display the content of the directory. The files in red were copied to the USB flash
drive.
