1 Basic notes
You must have read and understood the operating
manual to be able to safely install and use the product!
In addition to this manual, the generally applicable and local
regulations of the energy supply companies, accident prevention
regulations and the environmental protection regulations must also
be observed.
The user must have access to this operating manual at all times.
Special attention must be paid to the safety instructions. This
includes transport, operation, maintenance and disposal.
The operator must ensure that this operating manual is
permanently available at the product
and that the personnel who work with the product are aware of the
directives stated in this operating manual.
The safety and danger instructions on the product must not be
manipulated.
1.1 Applicability
This operating manual is intended for electrotechnically trained
persons and qualified electricians.
1.2 Document storage
Keep this operating manual in a safe place.
In case of an operator change, the documentation must be passed
on to the successor.
1.3 Purpose of the operating manual
The operating manual describes how the appliance tester can be
put into operation safely and thus defines the intended and safe
use of the product. The applicable provisions, regulations and
standards shall be authoritative for testing by means of the
appliance tester.
1.4 Special notes
In this operating manual, the storage battery (accumulator) is
referred to as battery. For reasons of better readability, the
consistent use of gender-equitable formulations has been avoided.
Warranty
Warranty or guarantee claims and the warranty period depend on
the respective contractual relationship as well as on the general
terms and conditions of the manufacturer. Details about the
manufacturer’s warranty can be found in the contractual
agreements. Warranty and liability claims are generally excluded if
damage is due to incorrect assembly, improper use or force
majeure. The information in this operating manual has been
checked carefully. However, no liability can be assumed for errors.
If any prescribed services are not performed regularly or not on
time according to manufacturer specifications during the warranty
period, a decision about a warranty claim can only be made once
the findings are available.
Liability exclusion
The manufacturer has checked the contents of the documentation
for compliance with the hardware and software described.
Nevertheless, errors cannot be excluded, meaning that the
manufacturer does not assume any liability for absolute
compliance. The contents of this documentation are checked at
regular intervals and any necessary corrections will be included in
the versions that follow. Any improper use of the product will lead
to cancellation of the warranty, the guarantee and the general
liability of the manufacturer. The manufacturer is not liable for
damage as a result of non-observance of this operating manual.
The product may only be opened by an experienced electrician, if
this is at all permitted. The electrician must be familiar with and
adhere to the standards and regulations of the supply companies
and the work safety regulations.
Any use other than that described in the documentation is
considered to be incorrect. The manufacturer is not responsible for
resulting damage.
Modifications to the product or the documentation are forbidden.
Software changes
If a software change is performed without the knowledge and
approval of the manufacturer, the warranty and guarantee claim
becomes void.
Hardware changes
If changes are made to the housing or other system components
without the knowledge and approval of the manufacturer, the
warranty and guarantee claim becomes void.

For general illustrative purposes, this operating manual includes
figures and drawings. The functional possibilities and
representations can deviate from the present product.

The type plate indicating the series number is located inside the
housing (on the left next to the connections for peripheral devices).

2 Safety
2.1 Basic information about safety
The product is built according to the state of the art and the
recognized safety regulations. Despite this, there might be danger
to life and limb of the user or a third person in case of improper
use, and the product or other material assets might be affected.
•If the product is operated by persons who are untrained or have
not been instructed.
•If the product is not used for its intended purpose.
•If the product is maintained or repaired improperly.
•If the product is not operated in technically perfect condition.
The product operates in mains or battery operating mode. It
contains components at which high currents and voltages are
present. Provided that it has been correctly installed, the product is
earthed and corresponds to protection class: see type plate.
Maintenance work must only be carried out by
service technicians of the manufacturer or his
contractual partner.
This operating manual is an essential constituent of the product
and applies exclusively to this product from the manufacturer.
The information contained in this operating manual is binding. This
operating manual must be read in full and the information therein
must be followed at all times.
Non-observance, manipulation or misuse of the instructions and
safety instructions given in this manual can result in considerable
danger.
In the event of erroneous operation or misuse, the life and limb of
the operator or third parties may be put at risk, the product and
other assets belonging to the operator may be damaged, or
efficient work with the product may be restricted.
Besides the instructions and the binding regulations relating to the
prevention of accidents that are applicable in the country and
place of use, the recognized professional rules for safe and
professional work must also be observed.
Additional warnings are provided in order to guarantee adequate
safety for personnel. Adequate safety when handling the product
will only be guaranteed when this is observed.

2.3 Safety notes
This documentation contains notes that must be taken into
consideration for personal safety and avoiding personal injuries
and damage to property.
If you see one of the symbols shown in the documentation, highest
attention is required.
Please observe that working on live parts of all kinds is
dangerous!
Even low voltages from 25 V AC and 60 V DC on may
be dangerous to human life!
Dangerous voltages might occur on the test sample
during insulation testing (RInsu) or when using the
alternative leakage current measuring method.
Under no circumstances should persons be electrically
involved in test procedures. It is not permitted to
measure leakage currents via persons.
If it is assumed that safe operation is no longer possible,
the device must be switched off immediately and
secured against unintended operation. Safe operation
can be assumed to be no longer possible, if
•the device exhibits visible damage,
•the device no longer works,
•if the device has been stored under unfavorable
conditions for a longer period of time or has been
exposed to extraordinary stress during transport.
Please use only the original measuring lines provided or
corresponding safety measuring accessories!
For device protection and for functional testing, the
measuring voltages are monitored. In case of a fault, an
error will be indicated on the display. Measurement will
be interrupted. In case of a fault current of ≥ 25 mA, the
device will be switched off within 100 to 200 ms.
In order to detect short-circuits and body contacts
occurring behind the switch-on elements (switch,
thermostat, relay etc.) of the test sample, the test sample
must be switched on.
The test sample must be free of external voltage
(disconnected from the mains).
The device is not intended for measurements in
electrical installations!
Do not connect any external voltage to the "test socket"
and to the built-in jacks or the IEC connector. The device
might get damaged!
The appliance tester must be used only in the specified
operating and measuring ranges.
Pressing the "Pause" button will stop the measurement.
During the pause, the test socket remains live!
Clean the housing regularly with a damp cloth and then
wipe the wet surfaces dry.
Do not use any cleaning and polishing agents or
solvents.
For the testing of devices with the warning "High
leakage current!", the test must be carried out by
qualified electricians only!
The content of this documentation is intended to explain
the appliance tester and in no way replaces the currently
applicable test standards.

2.4 Personnel qualification
Electrical safety tests of portable electrical equipment can be
carried out by competent persons or qualified electricians. Due to
the definitions of the German technical guideline for operational
safety "Competent persons –specific requirements –electrical
hazards" (TRBS "Befähigte Personen –Besondere Anforderungen
–Elektrische Gefährdungen"), it is no longer possible to let the
testing be carried out only by electrotechnically trained persons.
However, the electrotechnically trained person can take over tasks
in a testing team
(e. g. qualified electrician / electrotechnically trained person) within
the framework of periodic tests and thus support the qualified
electrician.
Competent person
In terms of the German Health and Safety at Work Regulation, a
competent person is someone who has the required expert
knowledge for the testing of electrical equipment due to his/her
vocational education, professional experience and contemporary
occupational activity.According to the German technical guideline
for operational safety TRBS 1203, the competent person must
have finished an electrotechnical vocational education or must
have another similar electrotechnical qualification suitable for the
testing of portable electrical equipment to ensure protection
against electrical hazards. The term professional experience
means that the person has at least one year of experience
regarding the installation, assembly or maintenance of electrical
equipment.For the intended testing of portable electrical
equipment, the competent person must have the required detailed
knowledge of electrical engineering as well as of the relevant
electrotechnical regulations and must regularly update this
knowledge.These demands show that safety-related evaluation of
portable electrical equipment basically requires the attributes of a
qualified electrician.
Qualified electrician
In terms of the German accident prevention regulation "Electrical
systems and equipment" (DGUV Regulation 3), a qualified
electrician is someone who is able to evaluate the tasks assigned
to him/her due to his/her professional education, knowledge and
experience as well as to the knowledge of the relevant provisions
and who is able to recognize possible dangers (as a rule e.g.
journeyman electricians, master electricians, electrical engineering
technician, electrical engineer).
Electrotechnically trained person
An electrotechnically trained person is someone who has been
informed and instructed (if necessary) by the qualified electrician
regarding the tasks assigned to him/her and regarding possible
dangers in case of improper behavior. Moreover, the
electrotechnically trained person has been instructed with regard
to the required protection equipment and protective measures.For
all this, e. g. in-house craftspeople or skilled workers, equipment
maintenance personnel or facility managers can be taken into
consideration.
2.5 Qualification for maintenance
Maintenance work must only be carried out by service technicians
of the manufacturer or his contractual partner.
2.6 Intended use
The product may only be used for the applications
described in this operating manual and only with
accessories authorized by the manufacturer.
The product may only be used in a technically perfect
and safe condition.
For testing, the corresponding provisions, regulations
and standards shall be authoritative.
All instructions and notes contained in this operating
manual as well as the technical data sheets must be
observed.
The BENNING ST 755/ ST 760 appliance tester can be
used to its full extent in earthed mains only.
When operated in the IT earthing system, leakage
current measurement is only possible using the
alternative leakage current measuring method.
The device may only be connected to a TN, TT or IT
power supply network with max. 240 V/ 400 V, which
complies with the applicable safety regulations (e. g.
IEC 60346, VDE 0100) and is protected with a
maximum nominal current of 16 A.
For all work carried out with the device, the respective
applicable accident prevention regulations of the
industrial professional associations for electrical
equipment must be observed.
The device has been built and tested in compliance with the
applicable standards and regulations (see chapter 28) and has left
the factory in perfect condition.
To preserve this condition and to ensure safe operation of the
device, the user must absolutely observe the safety notes and
warnings given in this operating manual.
Improper handling and non-observance of the warnings might
involve severe injuries or danger to life.
Do not touch the display with edged objects and do not apply
pressure to the display. Only use the input stylus provided or a
similar type. It is also possible to operate the device with your
fingers.
The device complies with protection class II. For operation of the
"test socket", the protective conductor of the device input is looped
through. The protective conductor is intended for measuring to
earth. The device must be connected to a single-phase mains with
230 V, 50 Hz and a pre-fuse of 16 A only.

3 Transport
If the device has been transported under conditions
deviating from the specified operating temperature or air
humidity, the appliance tester needs an acclimatization
phase of at least two hours before being switched on.
The device and its components may be damaged by
careless transport.
Do not expose the components to vibrations.
Please keep the original packaging for later dispatch. Transport
damages due to improper packaging are excluded from warranty.
In case the original packaging is no longer available, please
contact the corresponding contact person of the returns
management (see chapter 31).
For dispatch of the BENNING ST 755/ ST 760, an appropriate
outer package and two molded parts are required to secure the
device during transport.

4 Storage
Improper storage might result in operational malfunctions.
This is why you should observe the specified conditions.
It is recommended to store the device in dry, dust-free rooms and
away from chemical substances.
•The device must be stored in a suitable place.
Due to water condensation, make sure that the device is not
exposed to large temperature differences.
•Storage temperature: The values can be found in the technical
data.
The temperatures must neither fall below the values stated in
the technical data nor exceed them.
•Temperature fluctuations greater than 20 K per hour are not
permitted.
•Relative air humidity (non-condensing):
The values can be found in the technical data. The values
stated in the technical data must not be exceeded.
•If the device is stored in high air humidity conditions for a
longer period of time, it must dry for more than one day before
being connected to the mains.
To protect the appliance tester from temperature and humidity
influences in the long term, carefully close the device case before
storing the product.
The device case is equipped with an automatic pressure valve for
optimum storage. This valve is located near the carrying handle on
the front of the device case.

The range of functions of the BENNING ST 755/ ST 760 can be
extended using optional accessories.
The look of the ST 755 corresponds to that of the ST 760.
For this reason, only one of the two types will be shown in the
following.
5.1 Functional description
The latest generation of the BENNING appliance tester has been
developed for highest demands, greatest possible flexibility and
best availability.
The BENNING ST 755/ ST 760 ensures safe testing of your
devices, equipment and medical devices.
Innovative operation via the integrated touchscreen as well as
automatic, manual and self-configurable test procedures increase
the usability for your specific applications.
The storage battery inside the BENNING ST 755/ ST 760 allows
using the user interface and accessing the test sample and
customer databases even in case of a power failure or a test
station change.
The built-in USB interface and the included
"BENNING PC-Win ST 750-760" PC software allow to read out
the memory data and enables communication between a PC and
the tester.
The complete test sample and customer database is stored on an
SD card and can be reused in identical appliance testers.
The optional Bluetooth®printer BENNING PT1 enables on-site
logging. The test samples are provided with test stickers and can
be scanned by means of the optional barcode reader.
On-site logging can also be structured using optional RFID
accessories.
Measuring results are displayed via a “PASS/FAIL” indication and
are accompanied by an acoustic warning signal if the test is not
passed.
Each selectable test procedure is provided with a help function
and schematic connecting diagrams.
Free updates can be installed in different ways.
The GUI and firmware update can be carried out via
- WLAN or LAN (with Internet connection) and
- USB stick.

5.4 Notes on the built-in storage battery
-The correct storage battery level (SoC = state of charge) is only displayed after the first full charge to 100 %.
The SoC remains at 0 % until full charging has been completed.
-As soon as the storage battery has been discharged to 0 %, the storage battery will initially charge slowly (approx. 30 minutes).
Then, the actual charging takes place with a higher current.
-If the storage battery is exhausted and the power supply from the mains is missing, the device switches off automatically.
It is recommended to always switch off the device via the ON/OFF switch after use.

7 General operation
The BENNING ST 755/ ST 760 is operated via the integrated
touchscreen. Capacitive detection enables the touchscreen to
respond to touch by your fingers or the rubber coating of the
supplied stylus.
Icons and buttons are displayed that allow you to navigate through
the menu structure. You can go to the desired menu item by tapping
on the corresponding button or the corresponding icon.
For listings that exceed the display area of the touchscreen, you can
scroll the list via “Swipe up or down".

8 Commissioning
8.1 Mains connection
Plug the mains connection cable into a shock-proof
socket (230 V, 50 Hz, 16 A)
Set the mains switch to position "I”.
The appliance tester carries out a self-test and shows the
“Registration / login" screen after the start sequence.
8.2 Login
Inputs can be made via the capacitive touchscreen
manually or using the stylus supplied.
Navigate to the "User" screen by touching the "Name" input
line.
Select the user "admin" by touching the corresponding line.
You will get back to the “Registration / login” screen.
Touch the "Password" input line and enter the
preconfigured default password.
Default password of the admin user: Benning
The manufacturer recommends to assign a new admin
password after the initial commissioning.
After entering the password, you can optionally enter an order
number.
(The order number appears in the test report later.)
Confirm your entries by touching the
“Confirm entry” soft key.
The “Main menu” screen opens.
Incorrect password entry
If the password has been entered incorrectly, the following
message appears on the “Registration / login" screen:
“Wrong name or password!”
Correct your entry and confirm the login again.

“Registration / login" screen.

8.3 Main menu
Via the main menu, you can access all functions and settings of
the appliance tester.
8.4 Calibration
After initial commissioning, the appliance tester must be
calibrated using the internal calibration.
The ST 755/ ST 760 must be calibrated every 12 months
by the manufacturer or in certified calibration
laboratories
(see chapter 30, Maintenance / calibration).
Follow the instructions in chapter 9.6 to calibrate the appliance
tester.
8.5 Change of test station
Do not switch off the appliance tester if you disconnect
the mains supply of the ST 755/ ST 760 due to a test
station change. The ST 755/ ST 760 appliance tester is
provided with an integrated storage battery in order to
maintain operation in the event of a power failure.
The storage battery will be charged automatically in
mains operating mode with the device being switched
on.

9.2 System settings
Tap the icon on the left to go to the
"System settings" screen.

Touch the ON/OFF sliders to enable/disable the
following functions:
RPE test repetition
ON = During the protective conductor resistance
measurement, the appliance tester automatically detects
whether a measuring point is contacted with the test probe.
If the measured value is "OK", the appliance tester responds
with an acoustic signal and the next measuring point can be
contacted.
Test repetition
ON= The appliance tester asks whether another measuring
point shall be contacted with the test probe.
Valid for RPE (only if RPE test repetition is switched off),
RInsu-2, RInsu-3, RInsu-4, ICont, ILeak, IPLeak and ICont
weld.
Notification sound
ON = Switches on the acoustic signal of the appliance tester
Short-circuit test
OFF= Disables the short-circuit test before starting a

"Network settings" screen.
9.2.2.1 Network information
The network information provide an overview of the current
LAN and WLAN configuration of your appliance tester.
The overview provides the following information:
host name
DHCP status
IP address
subnet mask
standard gateway
MAC address
DNS accessibility
update server accessibility
9.2.2.2 Host name
The host name (device name) shown in the network can be
changed by entering a text. The change of the host name only
becomes effective after restarting the ST 755/ ST 760.
9.2.2.3 LAN-IPv4/ WLAN-IPv4
The configuration options in the LAN and WLAN menu are
identical.
You can change the following settings:
DHCP
(ON = automatic integration into an existing network)
IP address
subnet mask
standard gateway
The IP address, subnet mask and standard gateway
can only be changed manually if DHCP is disabled.
Touch the ON/OFF sliders to enable/disable the
DHCP function:
The settings for IP address, subnet mask and standard gateway
are made via a prompt.
Touch the corresponding line and follow the information shown
on the display.
Restart the appliance tester to apply your changes.
9.2.2.4 WLAN networks
You will get an overview of the WLAN networks available in your
area.
By touching the "Update" button, the appliance
tester automatically starts searching.
After a short update, the available WLAN networks are shown on
the display of the appliance tester.
The signal strength of the WLAN network is specified in the
corresponding line as a percentage value
(100 % correspond to full signal strength).
Connecting to a WLAN network
Touch the line with the corresponding network.
Tap the “Connect” button.
The "Password" screen opens.
Enter the valid network password and confirm
your entries by touching the “Confirm entry”
soft key.

The connection status is displayed on the right in the line of the
selected network.
The following status messages are displayed:
"Connecting" = connection is being established
"Connected –waiting for IP" = waiting for an IP address
being assigned by DHCP
"Connected" = The network has been successfully connected
and the connection is active.
Disconnecting from a WLAN network
Touch the line of the connected network.
Tap the “Disconnect” button.
The WLAN network connection is disconnected.
The access data of a previously connected WLAN
network remain stored in the appliance tester.
Stored WLAN networks can be identified by the status
message "Stored" on the right of the corresponding
network line.
Deleting a stored WLAN network
Touch the line of a stored WLAN network or of the
connected network.
Tap the “Delete” button.
The access data of the stored or connected WLAN network are
deleted and the status display of the network line changes back
to the signal strength or the status message "Connected".
Checking a WLAN connection
If there is an active connection to a WLAN
network, the icon on the left will be displayed in
the headers of the screens.
If the appliance tester loses the connection to the WLAN network,
the following message appears on the display:
“Not connected. Please check if you are within range of the
WLAN network and if the password is correct.“

Tap the "Information" icon to go to the device
information and view the contact details of the
technical support.
You will get an overview of the current device and contact data.

Tap the icon on the left to go to the "Connect
Bluetooth®devices" screen.
The Bluetooth®connection is used for wireless control of the
optional log printer and Bluetooth®barcode scanner.
Please observe the manufacturer's specifications for
the Bluetooth®log printer's transmission and reception
range to ensure uninterrupted connection.
Connecting the log Printer to the appliance tester
Start the log printer
(see chapter 22) and wait until the log printer is ready for
operation.
Tap the “Search” button.
The appliance tester searches within the reception range for
Bluetooth®-enabled peripheral devices.
When the search is complete, the available Bluetooth®devices are
displayed.
Select the corresponding device line on the touchscreen
and touch the "Connect" button.
The appliance tester automatically connects to the selected log
printer.
After successful connection, a message appears on the display.
9.3 Database
ST 755/ ST 760 database structure
Tap the icon on the left to go to the
"Database administration" screen.
The following contents are managed in a database:

customer data
department names
test sample data
The database name is assigned when a database is
created and can only be modified using the PC
software (BENNING PC-WIN ST 750-760).
It is not possible to edit measured values that have
been stored.
