2. Overview
2.1 Introduction
The ServReach™KVMCube (KVIP1001A) extends your keyboard, video, and mouse (KVM) from any computer or server over
TCP/IP via a LAN, a WAN, or an Internet connection. Control, monitor, and manage your servers from wherever you are, inside
or outside the organization. The KVMCube is a cost-effective hardware solution for secure remote KVM access and control
of a computer/server from the BIOS level independent of the operating system. It is designed to connect to a single computer
over TCP/IP communication.
2.2 Features
• Provides BIOS-level access to any server’s brand and model, regardless of the server condition and network connectivity,
covering the entire spectrum of crash scenarios.
• Compatible with all major operating systems. Supports many hardware and software configurations for the remote client and
the target server computers.
• Web-based access: Browser access to a target server from any location via a secure standard IP connection.
• Multi-user view mode: Enables simultaneous users to view remote sessions. Remote control can be intuitively handed between
users with appropriate permissions.
• Virtual media: Mount nearly any removable mass storage devices connected to the client computer onto the target server.
2.3 Terminology
Below are some terms and their meanings used in this guide.
Target server: The computers/servers that are accessed remotely via the KVMCube.
Client computer: The PC running a remote KVMCube session.
Remote session: The process of accessing and controlling target servers connected to the KVMCube from a user workstation.
2.4 What’s Included
The KVMCube system package includes:

• USB/video cable
• Power adapter
• Set of rackmounting brackets and mounting screws
You might also need an optional cable (part number PRPCUBE-USB-0002) to connect an optional Power Reboot Pod (PRP1000A)
to the ServReach KVM Cube.

2.6 Client Computer Operating System
You will need Windows 2000 or higher, with Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher version, Firefox 3, or Linux with Firefox 3 or later. If
using Windows Vista, a user must have administrative rights to WIndows Vista and must run Internet Explorer as an administrator.
Only 32-bit operating systems are supported.

3. Installation
3.1 Connecting the KVMCube to a Rack
The KVMCube comes with a versatile bracket in two sections (see Figure 3-1). The bracket can be connected to the KVMCube
and then mounted on a rack in many different ways.
• Connect to the left or right side of the rack.
• Connect the KVMCube to the bracket at different angles.
• Connect to different horizontal positions on the rack.

Use the screws provided to connect the bracket sections. There are two different types of screws. Connect the two parts of the
brackets together with the three longer round-headed screws. See Figure 3-2.
Connect bracket section 2 to the rear of the KVMCube with the two shorter flat-headed screws. See Figure 3-3.
NOTE: The screws fit snugly into the indented side of the bracket section 2.

3.2 Connecting the KVMCube to the Network
If your network switch supports PoE (Power over Ethernet), KVMCubes can receive power via the network cable. Alternatively
KVMCubes can receive power from the optional power adapter.
To connect the KVMCube:
1. Connect the 26-pin connector of the supplied USB/video cable to the 26-pin port of the KVMCube.
2. Connect the USB and video connectors of the USB/video cable to the relevant ports of the target server. See Figure 3-4.
3a. Connect a network cable to the RJ-45 port of the KVMCube and to your PoE-enabled network switch.
3b. Or connect the power adapter to the KVMCube power port.

3.3 KVMCube LEDs
The KVMCube has two green LEDs near the RJ-45 connector. The left one lights if the KVMCube is connected to a PoE network
switch, and the right one lights if the target server connected to the KVMCube is being accessed.

4. Configuration
4.1 Initial Settings—Default IP Address
This section provides instructions for setting the IP address for the KVMCube.
By default, the KVMCube boots with an automatically assigned IP address from a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
server on the network. The DHCP server provides a valid IP address, gateway address, and subnet mask.
To identify the IP address, the KVMCube MAC address appears on the underside of the KVMCube. The device number (D.N.) can
also be found there.
If no DHCP server is found on the network, the KVMCube boots with the static IP address: 192.168.0.155.
NOTE: If a DHCP server later becomes available, the unit picks up the IP settings from DHCP server. To keep the static IP address,
disable DHCP.
4.2 Static IP Addresses for a Number of Units
When you want to connect more than one KVMCube to the same network and there is no DHCP server, or you want to use
static IP addresses, do the following:
Connect the KVMCube units one at a time and change the static IP address of each unit before connecting the next unit. If a
DHCP server is available, be sure to disable DHCP.

5. Logging into the Web Interface
Complete the initial setup via the Web configuration interface:
1. Open your Web browser (Internet Explorer version 6.0 or higher, Firefox 3, Linux with Firefox 3).
2. Type the KVMCube system IP address: https://IP address, then press “Enter.” The login page appears (see Figure 5-1).

3. Type the default username: admin. Then enter the default password: access (all lower case).
4. Press “Enter.” The Web interface opens at the Network Configuration page. See Figure 5-2.
5. Bookmark the page for easy reference.

SSL Certificate Notes
When first connecting to the KVMCube’s https configuration page, two browser security warnings appear. Click “Yes” to pro-
ceed.
The first warning disappears upon the first KVMCube client installation, when Black Box’s root certificate is installed.

6. System Configuration
6.1 Network > Configuration
Consult your Network Administrator for the network settings.
Device name—Type a name for the KVMCube. Default device name consists of the letter “D” followed by the 6-digit device
number (D.N.) found on the silver label on the underside of the KVMCube box.
TCP Port—Choose a single TCP port to use for the KVMCube. Older versions of firmware enable you to select three TCP ports,
which must be consecutive.
NOTES: Firewall or router security access list must enable inbound communications through the selected TCP ports and Port 443
for the KVMCube’s IP address.
For client computer access from a secured LAN, the selected ports should be open for outbound communications.
6.1.1 LAN
Under LAN (see Figure 5-2), is the following:
Enable DHCP—When a DHCP server is active on the same network to which a KVMCube is connected, DHCP provides auto-
matic IP assignment.
When DHCP is disabled (this is recommended), you can assign a fixed IP address to the KVMCube.
Consult your Network Administrator about the use of the DHCP. Note! When you have access to the server, your configured (or
default) KVMCube device name will appear on the DHCP server’s interface, making it easy to locate.
When DHCP is disabled, enter the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway for LAN, as given by your Network
Administrator.
6.1.2 ServReach KVManager
The KVManager is a centralized IP-based system for secure control of servers and network devices, power, and user administra-
tion in the data center environment.
The KVManager combines out-of-band, KVM via IP access with modern IT standards and requirements. It is the most comprehen-
sive remote server maintenance solution available today.
Enable Centralized Management—Check this option to allow the KVMCube unit to be remotely managed by Black Box’s
KVManager system. When managed by the KVManager, only Network Configuration and Restore Factory Settings are available
from the KVMCube configuration page. All other settings are managed from the KVManager.
Manager Auto Discovery—When checked, the KVManager automatically detects a KVMCube unit if it resides on the same
network segment.
Manager IP Access—If the KVMCube unit resides on a different segment, type the static IP address of the KVManager. (We
advise typing the static IP address of the KVManager even if the KVMCube resides on the same network segment as the
KVManager.)
NOTE: Before assigning the KVMCube to the KVManager, make sure that the KVMCube is configured to the correct TCP port.
If you are using an older version, you will be required to enter three consecutive TCP ports. By default, these three TCP
ports are 900, 901, and 902.

6.2 Network > SNMP settings
From the menu click SNMP settings. The following appears:

From this page, you can activate or deactivate SNMP logging.
Enable traps—Check to enable SNMP traps of KVMCube events and operation.
Community—Type the SNMP community.
SNMP Manager IP—Enter the SNMP Server IP address.
6.3 Administration > User Settings
From the menu click “User Settings.” Figure 6-2 appears.

On this page, an administrator creates and edits users.
There are three levels of user access:
• Administrator
• User
Administrator
An administrator has unrestricted access to all windows and settings and can “take over” any active session (explained in Section
7.1). An administrator can change the name and password of all users.
User
A user can access/control the target server but has no access to the Web configuration interface.
6.3.1 Adding a User
To add a user:
1. Click and type a name and a password. The password must be at least six characters—letters or numbers—and
must not include the username, even if other characters are added.
NOTE: The following “special” characters: &, <, >, ”, {, } cannot be used for either the username or password.
Depending on the security level chosen, the username and password parameters are different. See Section 6.4.
2. Select the permission type from the Permission box.
3. Click , and the user appears in the list of users.
6.3.2 Editing a User
To edit a user:
1. Select the user from the list.
2. Click . You can now change all the parameters—username, permission, and password.
3. Click , and the changes are saved.
6.3.3 Deleting a User
To delete a user:
1. Select the user from the list.
2. Click .
3. Click , and the changes are saved.

6.3.4 Blocking a User
An alternative to deleting a user is blocking a user. This means that the user’s name and password are stored, but the user is
unable to access the system. Check Block to block a user. Uncheck Block to allow the user access.
6.4 Security > Settings
Configure the security features, such as Account Blocking, Password Policy, and Idle Timeout, as explained below.
From the Security section, click “Settings.” The Security Settings appear (see Figure 6-3).

The security settings elements:
Account Blocking—Decide on the number of attempts to log in with a wrong username or password after which there is a time
lock or a total block.
Password Policy—You have the option of a standard or high security level of password.
The table below shows the parameters of the two options.

Check the box to enable the high security password policy. If unchecked, the standard security policy applies.
Idle Timeout—Select the timeout inactivity period after which the user is disconnected from the system. Choose “No Timeout”
to disable timeout.

6.5 Security > SSL Certificate
You can install an SSL certificate.
To do so:
From the menu, select “SSL Certificate.” The install SSL Certificate page appears (see Figure 6-4).

Certificate File—Browse to locate the certificate file.
Private File—Browse to locate the private key file.
NOTE: The latest firmware doesn’t support a “key password,” but older versions do. You just need to enter a “private key”
password.
6.6 Maintenance > Firmware Upgrade
Upgrade the KVMCube firmware to take advantage of new features. Download the firmware from Black Box’s FTP site,
ftp.blackbox.com. Save the firmware file on the client computer.
From the menu select “Firmware Upgrade.” The Firmware Upgrade screen appears (see Figure 6-5).
