Removing the base plinth (optional)
Your BT Decor 1500 will come with the base plinth
already attached. If you want to use your BT Decor 1500
on a flat surface such as a table or desk then we advise
you to leave the plinth attached.
If you want to remove the base plinth, turn the plinth
lock switch on the underside of the phone to the ‘unlock’
position and unclip.
Setting the day and time
You will need to set the correct day and time so that you
will know when each answering machine message was
recorded.
1. Press and hold the button, the current day setting
is announced.
2. Keep holding the button and press or to
hear the days. When the correct day is announced,
release the button. An announcement will confirm
the day is set.
3. Press and hold the button, the current hour setting
is announced.
4. Keep holding the button and press or to
hear the hours. When the correct hour is announced,

Setting up
If you prefer to wall-mount your BT
Decor 1500, please refer to the
instructions shown on page 22.
The pre-set day and time are
Saturday 12:01am. When you
connect the power, the clock will
start running from this time.
Your BT Decor 1500 uses the
12-hour clock.

Make and end a call
1. Lift the handset and wait for the dial tone.
2. Dial the telephone number.
3. Replace the handset to end the call.
Last number redial
1. Press .The last number called will be dialled
out automatically.
Switch secrecy on and off
1. During a call, press and release the button.
The button will illuminate to show that secrecy is on.
The Secrecy feature is now in use. You can now talk to
someone in the room without your caller hearing you.
However, you will still be able to hear your caller.
2. Press and release the button again to return to
your caller. The secrecy light will go out.
Adjust the earpiece volume
With the handset at your ear, press the or
to increase or decrease the earpiece volume.

If the ringer is set to OFF, the call
light will still flash to indicate when
someone is calling you. Default
setting is high (Hi).
Adjust the ringer volume
Turn the phone over and move the Ringer Vol. Switch to
the volume you want: Hi, Lo or Off.
Set the ringer melody
Turn the phone over and move the Ringer Switch to the
position you want: R1, R2 or R3.
Set the dial mode
Turn the phone over and move the Mode Switch to the
position you want: P, TE or TB.

There are 3 ringer melodies to
choose from.
The default melody is R1.
There are 3 dial mode settings.
Tone/Timed break (TB), Tone/Earth
(TE) and Pulse/Earth (P). The
default setting is Tone/Timed
break (TB).
You should only have to change
this setting if connected to a
switchboard that requires Pulse
dialling or Earth recall.

You can store 10 of your most used telephone numbers
in your BT Decor 1500’s quickdial memory, to save
looking up and entering the numbers each time you want
to make a call.
To store a quickdial memory number
1. Lift the handset.
2. Press the button. The secrecy light will flash.
3. Using the keypad, enter a memory location number
between 0 and 9 under which you want to store
the number.
4. Enter the telephone number you want to store including
the area code. Quickdial numbers can be up to 18 digits
long.
5. Press the button. You will hear a confirmation tone.
6. Replace the handset.

If you are storing a long telephone
number slowly, you may hear the
message,“Please replace the handset
and try again”, through the handset.
Please ignore this message and
continue to enter the telephone
number before proceeding to steps
5and 6.
To edit a stored number
Follow the storing procedure
entering the correct telephone
number and this will overwrite the
existing stored number.
Storing a pause
Press at the point in the
dialling sequence where a pause
is required.

Memory card
The memory card (located on the
underside of the handset) can be
used to keep a record of your
quickdial memory numbers. Lift up
the plastic cover and you can write
on the card.

To dial a Quickdial memory number
1. Lift the handset and wait for the dial tone.
2. Press the button.
3. Using the keypad, enter the memory location number
between 0 and 9 under which the number is stored.
The number is dialled automatically.
Todelete stored numbers
1. Lift the handset.
2. Press the button. The secrecy light will flash.
3. Press the memory location number (0 – 9) number which
you have stored the number you wish to delete.
4. Press the button (without entering any digits).
You will hear a confirmation tone.

You can mix manual and memory
dialling as required, for example,
you can dial the area code 020
8304 from the memory and then
complete the number manually.

Check the day and time
Press , the day and time setting
are announced.

When first switched on, your BT Decor 1500 answering
machine is ready to go. It is set to answer calls and
record messages. If you have not already set the day and
time, you will need to do this so that you will know when
each message was received, see page 4.
Switch the answer machine on/off
When the answering machine is switched off, the
message counter will display ‘-’.
1. Press to switch between Answer On and Answer Off
modes. The selected mode will be announced.
Outgoing message (OGM)
This is the message your caller hears when the answering
machine picks up their call. Your BTDecor 1500 comes
with two pre-recorded outgoing messages to choose
from. You can also record your own outgoing messages.
Answer and Record
This is the default OGM. This allows your caller to leave
amessage for you.
Answer Only
This does not allow your caller to leave a message.

If the Answering machine memory
is full ‘F’ will flash in the message
counter.
To set the OGM to Answer Only,
please refer to the Answer delay
section on page 14.

Record your own outgoing message
1. Press and hold ,after you hear the long beep speak
your message clearly, close to the phone. Only release
when you have finished recording. You will hear a
long beep and your message will be played back for
checking.
Play/check outgoing message
1. Press and release .The selected OGM is played back
to you, followed by a long beep.
Select male/female outgoing message
1. Press and release .The selected OGM begins to play
back to you.
2. During playback, press once to stop playback, a short
beep will sound and then the voice you hear will switch
from male to female, or vice versa and the new default
OGM will play back to you.

While recording the message
counter flashes ‘r’ if you selected
Answer and Record mode (‘r’ for
normal mode) or ‘o’ for Answer
Only mode.

If you are recording an Answer
Only message, remember to tell
your caller that they will not be
able to leave you a message.

Delete your OGM and re-instate the pre-recorded
OGM
1. Press and release ,the selected OGM starts to play.
2. During playback, press . The OGM will stop playing,
ashort beep will sound, followed by the pre-recorded
OGM.
Unless you record another personal OGM, the pre-
recorded OGM will greet future callers.
New message alert on/off
To switch the alert beeps on/off
1. Press and hold until the machine announces the
setting you want, either “Message alert off” or “Message
alert on”.
Answer delay
Answer delay sets the number of times your BTDecor
1500 will ring before the answering machine picks up
your call. You can select an answer delay of 2–9 rings,
time saver (t) or Answer Only mode (o). The default
setting is 4 rings.

If you delete your own recorded
outgoing message, the pre-recorded
message is re-instated. You cannot
delete the pre-recorded message.
The default setting is for the new
message alert beeps to be ON.
The alert beeps will only sound if
there are ‘new’ messages.
Time Saver
With Time Saver if you have new
messages, your answering machine
answers after 4 rings. If you do not
have new messages it will answer
after 6 rings, so if you hear a fifth
ring you can hang up and save the
cost of a call.

Set the answer delay
1. Press and hold ,the current answer delay setting is
announced and displayed on the message counter.
2. Keep holding to hear the available settings. Release
when you hear the setting you require.

1. Press and release ,the current answer delay setting
is announced and displayed on the message counter.
Record a memo
Record a memo message for other users to hear.
Memos will be played back with your answering
machine messages.
1. Press and hold .
2. After the long beep, speak your message clearly, close to
your BT Decor 1500. When you have finished recording,
release .

The length of your memo can be
up to maximum recording capacity
(i.e. until the message memory
becomes full).
While recording the message
counter flashes ‘r’.

Listening to your messages
When you have received new answering machine messages,
the message counter will show the number of messages
received and the audible message alert beeps will sound.
Playing messages
Messages will be played back over the loudspeaker or,
if you pick up the handset you can listen privately to
your messages.
1. Press .
The machine announces, “You have n new messages”,
and your new messages are played back.
At the start of each message, the message number is
announced and during play the message counter displays
the message number.
Adjust the volume -Press the or button to
increase or decrease the playback volume.
Pause playback –Press . While paused, a P flashes in
the message counter and a short beep sounds every 10
seconds. Press again to resume playback.
Skip backward –Press to replay the current
message. Press twice to play the previous message.

When all messages have been played back, the machine
announces, “End of messages”, and begins an 8 second
countdown. At the end of the countdown, all messages,
except those selected for deletion are automatically
saved.
Delete all old messages
After the announcement, “End of messages”,during the
8second countdown you can delete all messages.
1. Press during the 8 second countdown, “All messages
deleted”, is announced. At the end of the countdown all
messages will be deleted.
Call screening
When the answering machine is taking a call, you
can listen to your caller leaving a message over the
loudspeaker and decide if you want to take the call
in person.
1. To speak to the caller, simply lift the handset and
recording will stop immediately.

You cannot delete new messages.
You will need to listen to your
messages before you can delete
them.
To stop deletion
Press during the 8 second
countdown. All messages, even
those marked for deletion will be
automatically saved.

Any partly recorded message will
be stored on the answering
machine.

Memory full
When full an ‘F’ will flash in the message counter and
you will hear the announcement, “Memory Full”.
If a caller is leaving a message and the memory becomes
full, the machine will announce, “Thank you for calling”,
and disconnect the line. Your answering machine will
then automatically switch to Answer Only mode, and
play callers the message, “Hello, your call cannot be taken
at the moment, so please call later”. You must delete
messages to allow for more messages to be recorded,
see above.

Your BT Decor 1500 answering
machine can record 11 minutes of
messages (including memos)
before the memory becomes full.

Operate your answering machine remotely from any
Touchtone™phone by calling your BT Decor 1500 and
entering an access code (*)followed by a 2-digit security
code. The security code helps to keep your messages
private and can be found on a label on the underside of
the phone.
Turn on your answering machine remotely
Ring your BT Decor 1500. It will answer the call after 20
rings. When you hang-up, the answering machine will
switch on automatically and answer calls.
Operate your answering machine
remotely
If you left your answering machine switched on:
1. Dial your BT Decor 1500 phone number and when the
OGM starts to play, press the button.
2. The OGM will stop playing and the answering machine
announces, “Please enter your security code”.
3. Enter the first digit of your security code, you will hear
ashort beep.
4. Enter the second digit of your security code.

The access code and 2-digit
security code cannot be changed.
Please note
If someone else tries to call you
and happens to let the phone ring
for 20 rings, the answering
machine will also switch on.
If the memory is full, you will have
to delete some messages before
your BTDecor 1500 will switch to
‘answer on’ mode. After you hear
the ‘memory full’ announcement,
you have 8 seconds to enter your
security code. You can then delete
messages, see ‘To delete
messages’, pages 17–18.
You must leave a small pause
between entering the two numbers
of the 2 digit security code or the
PIN will not work.

You will hear a beep. You have now accessed your
answering machine.
If you have no new messages, the machine announces,
“You have no messages”, and waits for 8 seconds for you
to enter another remote instruction.
If you have new messages, the machine announces,
“You have ‘n’ messages”, and begins to play them back.
Remote operation controls
During playback, you can operate the answering machine
using the keypad buttons on the phone you are using:
Press To pause playback, press again to
resume playback.
Press To repeat current message. Press
repeatedly to skip backwards through
messages.
Press Toskip forwards through messages.
Press repeatedly to keep skipping
forwards.
Press Todelete the current message.
Press Tostop an operation, e.g. message
playback, OGM recording.
Remote access
The message counter on your BT
Decor 1500 will flash ‘A’.
‘n’ is the number of messages.
If no digit is entered within 8
seconds, the machine will
announce, “Security code error.
Thank you for calling”, and will
release the line.
If you enter the incorrect code, you
will hear, “Security code error.
Please enter again”. If you enter
the wrong code again the machine
will announce, “Security code error.
Thank you for calling”,and will
release the line.
