Canon Service Bulletin COPIER
Issued by Canon Europa N.V.
Location:
DOCUMENT TRAY ASSEMBLY
Subject:
Frequent Appearance of Message Prompting to Clean ADF Scanning Glass
Detail:
<Symptom>
The following message is displayed on the LCD of the host machine in order to prompt users to clean the ADF
scanning glass, although there is no dust on the glass.
Message:
Originals may not be scanned clearly (streaks may appear). Clean the thin glass strip as shown in the illustration
with a damp, well wrung-out cloth.
<Cause>
The starting position of the image scanning in the main scanning direction when using ADF (stream reading) is
determined by the position of the original. The dust detection area is determined with reference to the scanning
starting position. Also, the position of the original is determined by the position of the side guide plates of the
ADF.
If the side guide plates are fixed at a position where the edge of the original comes close to the edge of the platen
roller, the roller edge will come in the dust detection area and finally be detected as dust.
<Factory Measures>
1. RCON software of the host machine is upgraded to Ver.8.01 so that the dust detection area is changed from
301mm to 298mm.
2. The procedure for adjusting the side guide plates of the DF is changed.
Service Work:
When the above symptom occurs, upgrade the Rcon Software of the host machine to Ver.8.01, referring to the
Service Information F2-T01-0M3-10016 (System Software information for iRC6800 series).
When the upgrade still fails to remove the symptom, see the attached procedure below and adjust the horizontal
registration as well.
Model:
DADF-M1
Ref No.:
DF-168
(F3-T01-00X-10014-01)

Horizontal Registration
(Prevention of Frequent ADF reading Glass Cleaning
Massage)
1. Adjusting the Side Guide Plate Position of
the ADF Original Pickup Tray
1) Place an original of A3 or 11x17 on the original
pickup tray. Press the Start key to run the machine.
2) Stop the machine forcibly when the original
passes through the platen roller by opening the
feeder cover.
3) Open the ADF, check the horizontal registration
(front: A/ rear: B) of the original [1] with reference
to the platen roller [2], and take a note of the
measurement.
Standard Measurement:
Original of A3: A=B=3.5mm
Original of 11x17: A=B=12.5mm
4) Open the feeder cover, and detach the inside
cover.
5) Remove the 3 mounting screws [1], and detach
the cover [2].
6) Loosen the mounting screw [1], and remove the
screw [2] from the positioning hole, and fit it and
temporarily tighten it in the adjusting angular hole
[3].
- if A > B, move the volume unit [4] to the front.
- if A < B, move the volume unit [4] to the rear.
Standard Measurement:
Original of A3: A=B=3.5mm
Original of 11x17: A=B=12.5mm
7) Tighten the screw [1] that has been tentatively
tightened and the screw [3] that has been fitted in
the adjusting angular hole.
8) When done, mount back the cover.
2. Making Adjustments Using the Host
Machine's Service Mode
1) Obtain the Test Chart.
If the Test Chart is not available, prepare one using
A4 or LTR paper as follows:
2) Place the Test Chart in the original pickup tray,
and make a copy at a 100% reproduction ratio.
3) Put the Test Chart over the output of step 2),
and check to see that the following is true
A</=1mm
B</=1mm
If not, go to step 4).
4) Start service mode as follows: press the User
Mode key, press the 2 and 8 keys at the same time,
and press the User Mode key once again.

5) Make the following selections:
COPIER>ADJUST>ADJ-XY>ADJ-Y-DF. Then,
change the setting to make adjustments.
- A higher setting will increase the margin of A,
decreasing the margin of B.
(in: 0.1 m)
(range: 21 to 106)
6) Make a copy of the Test Chart once again, and
check to see that the image is as indicated.
