Making Connections

nConnecting t e Mac ine to Your PC
To connect the machine to the computer you must use a printer cable matching the connector interface of your computer.
• Less than 3.0 m long bi-directional parallel cable (IEEE1284 based)
• Less than 5.0 m long USB cable
• Connect one of the mentioned above cables.
• If you are using USB cable, make sure your computer runs Microsoft Windows 98/Me, Windows 2000 or Windows XP/Server 2003,
is equipped with a USB port, and its operation is approved by the manufacturer.

• Make sure the computer is turned off.

Fix the connector solidly using the ire clips.

nConnecting t e Power Cord
When the power cord is plugged into the machine and into the wall outlet, the machine is turned on. Once connected, the machine
still needs to warm up before you can use it. The LCD displays
PLEASE WAIT
.
When you turn on the power for the first time, you need to select the correct language. For the i 1570F model, you also need to
select the correct country.
• This setting is only available for some countries.
• There is no separate ON/OFF power switch. Power is turned on when the machine is plugged in.
1When the power cord is plugged in, the machine will turn on.
2Use O (S) or P (R) to select the preferred language for the LCD display
and reports.
3Press OK.
• For the i 1570F model, continue below:
4Use O (S) or P (R) to select the country where you are using the
machine.
5Press OK.
Please wait for a while until the LCD returns to the Copy Mode standby display.
• Insert the power cord straight into the power cord connector on the left side of the machine. Do not insert it at an angle. Otherwise, the
machine may not be properly connected to the power source and may not turn on. If this happens, disconnect the power cord, and
reconnect it correctly after a minute or more.
• When disconnecting or connecting the power cord, be sure to unplug or plug in the power cord at the wall outlet, rather than the power
cord connector on the machine.

Energy Saver Mode
This machine provides an energy saver function. When no operations are performed for about 5 minutes, the machine
automatically enters the energy saver mode. For details, →Reference Guide.

Press Energy Saver.
• The LCD is turned off and the Energy Saver key lights up.

nRestoring from the Energy Saver Mode
Press Energy Saver.
• The Energy Saver key goes off and the machine enters standby mode.
• The machine can be restored from the energy saver mode immediately.

nConnecting t e Telep one Line and an External Device (Only for t e

The machine has two jacks on the left side for connection of the following:
: Telephone line
: External device, such as telephone or answering machine
Users in t e UK Only
If the connector of the external device cannot be connected to the jack on the machine,
you will need to purchase a B.T. adaptor to connect it as follows:
Connect the external device line to the B.T.
adaptor, then connect the B.T. adaptor to

The external device which you connect to the machine depends on how you want to use the machine.

Installing t e Output Tray
Hook the tab on the output tray onto the opening on the machine.
Loading Paper in t e Paper Drawer
This section describes how to load plain paper in the paper drawer so that you can begin using your machine.
• For complete details on loading paper in the stack bypass, the different print media you can use, and for instructions on selecting and
loading other print media, → Reference Guide.
1Grip the paper drawer handle, and draw it out towards you until the paper
drawer comes to a stop.
2Open a package of copy paper, and remove the paper stack.
3Load the paper stack beneath the paper drawer’s length guide a and width
guide’s claws b.
• Make sure that the paper stack does not exceed the length and width guides’ claws in the
paper drawer. Failure to do so will cause a paper jam.
• Even the edge of the paper stack, then load the paper stack in the paper drawer so that
its edge touches the length guide firmly.
4Gently insert the paper drawer as far as it will go.

Setting t e Receive Mode (Only for t e iR1570F model)
The machine provides you with several modes for receiving faxes. The most appropriate receive mode depends on your device
connections (→p. 10), frequency of fax calls and so on. When you connect an external device, you need to set the receive mode
in order to use its functions.
• For complete details on the modes for receiving faxes, → Fax Guide.
1Press FAX to switch the machine to Fax Mode.
2Press Receive Mode until the mode you want appears.
• You can select from the following:
–
FaxTel
*:
If a telephone is connected to the machine, the machine automatically switches
between faxes and voice calls.
–
FaxOnly
:
The machine receives only faxes.
–
Manual
:
If a telephone is connected to the machine, you can receive faxes by pressing
Start before replacing the handset on the telephone.
–
AnsMode
:
The machine receives faxes automatically and routes voice calls to an
answering machine.
* You can set details for the FaxTel mode. (→ Fax Guide)
3Press OK.
The selected receive mode is set and the machine returns to standby mode. The
current date and the selected receive mode are displayed.
• The machine does not ring when it receives a fax in FaxOnly . If you want to be
alerted when a fax is received, connect a telephone to the machine, and enable the
INCOMING RING setting. (→ Fax Guide)
• If an answering machine or a telephone with an answering machine is connected to
your machine, select AnsMode . (→ p. 10)
• Follow these guidelines when using the machine with an answering machine:
– Set the answering machine to answer on the first or second ring.
– When recording the outgoing message on the answering machine, the entire
message must be no longer than 15 seconds.
Ex: “Hello. I can’t answer the phone right now, but please leave a message after
the beep. I’ll return your call as soon as possible.”

Quick Guide for Making Copies
This section is a quick guide for making copies.
• For details on making copies using the various functions, → Reference Guide.
1Press COPY to set Copy Mode.
• For the i 1510/i 1530 models, this operation is not required.
2Prepare the document and place it on the platen glass or load it face down
in the ADF. (→ Reference Guide)
3Set copy features if you wish.
• To set the copy quantity, press the numeric keys.
• To select the paper feeding location (paper drawer or stack bypass), press Paper
Select.
• To enlarge or reduce copies, press Enlarge/Reduce.
• To set the image quality, press Image Quality.
• To set the copy exposure, press Exposure.
4Press Start to begin copying.
Quick Guide for Sending Faxes (Only for t e iR1570F model)
This section is a quick guide for sending faxes.
• Before sending faxes, you need to register the sender information, date and time. → Fax Guide.
• For details on sending faxes using the various functions, → Fax Guide.
1Press FAX to set Fax Mode.
2Prepare the document and load it face down in the ADF. (→ Reference
Guide)
3Set fax features if you wish.
• To adjust the resolution, press FAX Resolution.
4Dial the other party’s fax number by using the numeric keys.
5Press Start to begin scanning for sending faxes. After the documents are
scanned and stored in memory, the machine begins dialling the fax
number.

Installing CAPT software
• Before you can print using the machine, you must install CAPT (Canon Advanced Printing Technology) software on your computer.
• If there are any printer drivers of previous versions installed on your computer, be sure to delete those drivers from your computer
before installing CAPT software.

• IBM or IBM-compatible PC.
• CD- OM drive or network environment with the access to CD- OM.

CAPT (Canon Advanced Printing Tec nology) Software, USB Class Driver
The CAPT (Canon Advanced Printing Technology) software enables your machine to print. Be sure to install it on your
computer.
USB class driver is a software utility for printing using USB port. Install USB class driver if you plan to connect the machine to
your computer using USB cable.
NetSpot Device Installer
NetSpot Device Installer is a software utility for connecting the machine to network. efer to
NetSpot_Device_Installer\Windows\ eadme_Englisch.html on the attached CD- OM for details about NetSpot Device
Installer.

nCD-ROM Menu
If your computer is running Windows 95/98/Me or Windows NT4.0/2000/XP/Server 2003, you can begin installation of the
software from the CD- OM Menu.
After you set the attached CD- OM into the CD- OM drive of your computer, the following CD- OM Menu is displayed
automatically.
(The shown screen is for Windows 98)
• If the CD- OM Menu does not appear automatically, choose Run At from the Start Menu → type :\AUTORUN.EXE (if your
CD- OM drive is drive D:) in the command line → click OK.

nInstalling as a Local Printer
For connecting the machine to your computer directly (to use as a local printer), you can use parallel cable or USB cable.
Parallel Cable Users
— Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP/Server 2003

zInstalling from C -ROM Menu (Windows 95/98/Me)
• If some other printer driver is already installed on your computer for the parallel port (ex. LPT1:), before installing Canon
i 1510-1670, be sure to uninstall that driver or set it for file output (FILE:).
• For installation instructions using Plug and Play or Add Printer Wizard for Parallel Port, → Printer Guide.
Screen shots in the following installation procedures are given for Windows 98.
1Make sure the computer is turned off.
2Make sure the power cord of the machine is plugged into the power outlet and the machine is connected to your
computer using parallel cable (→ pp. 7, 8).
3Turn on the computer. Start up Windows.
Plug and Play is being carried out and the Found New Hardware Wizard (In Windows 95, New Hardware Found or
evice river Wizard) dialog box appears. Click Cancel. For installation instructions, using Plug and Play function of your
computer, → Printer Guide.
• If any Windows application (including virus checkers) starts up automatically, exit it before installation.
4Set the attached CD- OM into the CD- OM drive of your computer.
CD- OM Menu will appear automatically. If the CD- OM was already set in at the start up, first eject the CD- OM, then
insert it again.
• If the CD- OM Menu does not appear automatically, choose Run At from the Start Menu → type :\AUTORUN.EXE (if your
CD- OM drive is drive D:) in the command line → click OK.
5Click Canon iR1510-1670 Install button.
Add Printer Wizard dialog box appears.
Click Next >.
6Select Local printer → click Next >.
Add Printer Wizard dialog box (Manufacturers/
Printers selection) appears.

7Click Have isk... in the Manufacturers/Printers
dialog box.
The Install From isk dialog box appears.
8Click Browse... → select the directory that contains
the CAPT.
For example, if your CD- OM drive is drive D: → browse
to :\English\Win9x → click OK.
Make sure the folder is selected in the Copy
manufacturer’s files from box → click OK.
For Windows Me, select :\English\WinMe.
9The driver file selection dialog box appears. Click
Next >.
The printer port selection dialog box appears.
10 Select the printer port, the machine is connected to
(usually LPT1:), → click Next >.
Add Printer Wizard dialog box (Printer name) appears.
• If you select a port, other than the port Canon
i 1510-1670 is connected to, COM: or FILE: port, the
machine will not print.
11 Click Finish.
If you wish to change printer name, first type a new name
into the text box.

12 When the installation is complete, the following
dialog box appears. To close the dialog box, click
OK.

5Click Canon iR1510-1670 Install button.
Add Printer Wizard dialog box appears.
6Select My Computer → click Next >.
The printer port selection dialog box appears.
7Select the check box next to the printer port, the
machine is connected to (usually LPT1:) → click
Next >.
Add Printer Wizard dialog box (Manufacturers/
Printers selection) appears.
• If you select a port, other than the port Canon
i 1510-1670 is connected to, COM: or FILE: port, the
machine will not print.
