Description ofthegovernorsystem
ECON-4isaflexiblespeed governorcapabletooperateinvariousconfigurations.Possible
configurationscanbe:
a)ControlviaCAN–itreadsthe valuesofcontrolbitsandrequiredanalog valuesfrom the CAN
busline and not fromitsterminals(expectfromBIN S4.6Run/Stop, thissignalmustbe
present in all3 modes)
b)ControlviaBinarysignals
c)ControlviaAnalogue and binaryinputs.
Speed andpowerofasinglefuelengineisalwayscontrolled bytheactuatorconnected to ACT
terminalsorAnalog Outputincaseofactuatorwith 0-20mA(4-20mA)usage. Thisactuatorcan control
a fuelrackfordieselenginesora mixture throttlevalveforgasengines.
ECON-4ADV isadvanced version, itisdedicated speciallyto controlofengineinislandoperations
whereload stepsare expected.
Control byCAN-bus
ECON-4can receivevaluesofsomebinaryandanalog controlinputsviaCAN-buscommunication
linefrom enginecontroller,(see section Inputsand outputs forlistofshared inputs).Thisarrangement
can significantlysimplifythewiring on site.

Use grounding terminals.
The “-“terminalofthe batteryhasto be properlygrounded.
Cablesforbinaryinputsand analogueinputsmust notbe placed along powercables.
Analogue inputsshoulduse shielded cables,especiallywhen length >3m.
Alwaysuse shielded cable forMagneticpick-up.
Powersupply
Use min. powersupplycable of4mm2
MaximumcontinuousDC powersupplyvoltage is36VDC.Maximumshorttermallowablepower
supplyvoltageis39VDC.The ECON’spowersupplyterminalsareprotected againstlarge pulse
powerdisturbances.When thereisapotentialriskofthe controllerbeing subjected toconditions
outside itscapabilities, an outsideprotection device should beused.
Power supplyfusing
An eight-amp fuse shouldbe connected in-linewith thebatterypositive terminalto the controllerand
modules. ECON-4 should neverbe connected directlyto thestarting battery.
Recommended fuse isslow type – T8A.
Grounding
Use asshort aspossible cableto the grounding point on theswitchboard
Use cable min. 2,5mm2

The Requiredspeed issetto NominalRPM ifthe Nominalinput isclosed, otherwiseistheRequest
set to IdleRPM.
S4.4 SPEED UP
InputsSPEEDUPand SPEEDDOWNareused forsetting ofthe speed referenceofthe engine.The
speed referencecan be changedinthe rangefrom NominalRPM-PerChSpdNom% to NominalRPM
+PerChSpdNom%. Setpoint: EngineRPM:PerChSpdNom[1-50%]definesthe maximumPercentage
changeofSpeed fromNominalin caseBIN orANAmode ofcontrolisused.
Setpoint BISpeedramp decideshowfastthespeedreferencechanges,iftheinputsSPEEDUPor
SPEED DOWN are active.
Hint:
InputsSPEED UPandSPEEDDOWN are active onlyifthe setpoint Speed request hasvalue BIN.

Ifthe jumperisinposition2-3, terminalsGNDandSIGareseparatedfromall otherterminals.This
enablesto shareone pick-up bytwomodules,forinstancebyaspeedgovernorand byan ignition,
without dangerofcreating a ground loop.
Analog inputs
There are 2analog inputsavailable on the ECON-4.Each ofthemcan be configured eitheras0-20mA
or0-10Vrange byjumpersetting –see in table below.The analog input function isfixed.

The input definesspeedreference. It canbeset intherange from NominalRPM-PerChSpdNom% to
NominalRPM+PerChSpdNom%. Setpoint:EngineRPM:PerChSpdNom[1-50%]definesthe
maximumPercentage change ofSpeedfromNominalin case BIN orANAmode of controlisused.
Example:
Analoginput SPEEDREQUESTisset to range0–10V, NominalRPM is1500 RPM, Input voltage is
6 V.Speedreference isthen ReqSpeed=1500+(PerChSpdNom/100)*1500*(6-5)/5 =1524 RPM.
PerChSpdNom=8 in the previouscalculation.
Hint:
InputSPEED REQUESTisactive onlyifthe setpoint Speedrequest hasvalue ANA.
S3.2 ACTIVE POWER
Input fromthe externaltransmitterofActivepower.Value ofthe Activepowerisused to improveload
step responseof the governor.Input ACTIVE POWERisactiveonly,if the setpoint Speed request has
not value DATA. The input sensitivitycan be adjusted bysetpoint Load anticip.

OriginalMisfAnglecalculation isnot usedinlatestversion ofECON4andinversion 1.4isused
toshow feedbackfromSlave. If feedback fromslaveisconnectedtoanalog input onS3.2
setpoint LoadAnticipation has tobe=0. Othervise wrongvaluewill beusedforloadanticip
resulting unstabilityandunpredictivecontrol

ECON-4hasone analogoutputconfigurableto0-10Vor0-20mArangebyjumpersetting –seein
tablebelow.Ifconfigured to 0-20mArange, output worksasan activecurrentsource. The analog
output functionisfix(copyofthevaluesent toACToutput).Analogueoutputrangeisfully
programmableinrange0-10Vor0-20mA–seesetpoints: Analog settings: AOUT0%andAOUT
100%.

E.ganactuatorwith input4-20mAisused,theAOUT2rangesetpointsshouldbeadjustedinthe
following way:
Analog sensors: AOUT2 0%=20%(20%from20mA=4mA)

and jumperP6adjusted to current option.
In caseanactuatorwith an input0-5Visused, theAOUT2setpointsshouldbe adjustedinthe
following way:

Interface toactuators
ECON-4hasone interfaceto actuator.The interfacehasabipolarPWMoutput inbridgeconfiguration
and positionfeedbackinput.
It isrecommended toconnectPWMoutputbyatwistedcableandconnectfeedbackinputbya
shieldedcable.
ECON-4 currentlysupports following types of actuators:
a)With current input 200mA – typicalexampleisWoodward UG-A.
It iselectro-hydraulicactuator–inprincipleasmall electromagneticactuatorwith hydraulic
booster.It hasproportionalcharacteristic–thebiggeristhecurrent,thebiggeristheangleof
the actuator,thepolarityofthe current isnotimportant. Actuatorisusuallywithout electrical
position feedback. Forthisactuatorchooseoption ActType: Wiring:LINEARNOFEEDBACK

b) With current input max. 10A – typicalexamplesareactuators fromGAC, Woodward
FlowtechITB.
It iselectro-magneticactuatorwith astrongreturnspring.Thisisinprincipleelectromagnet
with proportionalcharacteristic–the biggeristhecurrent to the actuator,thebiggeristhe
angleofthe actuator.The polarityofthe current isnotimportant. Thistypeofactuatorcan be
with orwithout position feedback.Forthisactuatorchooseoption ActType: Wiring:LINEARor
LINEAR NOFEEDBACK.
c)Motordrivenactuators –typicalexamplesare actuators fromHeinzmann (STG6, 10, 30,
2040.)
It isinprincipleaDC electromotordrivingactuatorlever.Sinceitisamotor,ithasintegrating
characteristic–aslongasthecurrentflowsthroughtheactuator,actuator’slevermoves.
Directionofmovement ofthe actuatorleverdependson polarityofthe current.Thistype of
actuatorhasalwaysposition feedback.Forthisactuatorchooseoption ActTypex: Wiring:
BRIDGE.ForHeinzmannactuators,JumperP21–supplyofthe positionfeedbackmustbe
set to option 0-10V.ForWoodwardandGACactuators thisjumpermustbe set to position0-
5V.

otherterminals.

Following ECON-4 CAN setting isnecessaryto communicatewith InteliSysNT:
-CAN mode (Object number10338)=1 setsComAp protocol
-CAN NODE-ID (Object number10306)=88 (decimal)setsaddress ofthe module
Connection rules
CANbusline mustbe connected inseries,fromone unitto the next(no star,nocablestubs, andno
branches) bothendsmustbe bythe120-ohm(internalorexternal)resistorterminated. MaximalCAN
buslength is200 meters.
ECON-4 containsinternal120-ohmresistor, connected through a removable jumperP7.
ForCANdatacablesdetails see chapterTechnicaldata – Communication interface. CAN cable
shielding connect to CAN COM terminal.

In case ofDATAcontrolofbreaker`s feedback, logicalsignalsfrombreakers hasto be linked to Binary
outputsofECON4 in Genconfig. TerminalsS4.1andS4.2. donotneed to bewired.
Speed control handling (Speed requestmodes)
Speed request set to BIN mode
In case ofBINarycontrol, the ECON-4 isfullycontrolled viabinaryinputs– terminalsS4.3–
S4.8.(except CBcontrol). The input S4.6 isthe ON/OFFsignaltoECON-4, in case itisnot active,
speed governorwill not open thethrottle.In caseitisdeactivated during engine running, throttleis
immediatelyclosed. UseBIN S4.3 toswitch fromIdle running to Nominalspeed running (Idleand
Nominalspeed adjustment isinECON-4 setpoints:Engine RPM). Do not put the IdleRPM and
NominalRPM to the same value.In caseyouwant engine to be running at NominalRPMwithout Idle
period, leaveBIN S4.3 activated allthetime.
Use BIN S4.4 and S4.5 (Speed UPand Speed Down)to controlthe speed orload (in case ofparallel
with mainsoperation).
You do not need tolinkanysource to BinaryoutputsofECON4 in Genconfig. Thistype ofcontrolcan
be usedwith firmwarewithout support ofECON4 orevenforcollaborationwith thirt partycontrolleror
without anycontrollerjust asstandalone speed controller(no Data communication to ECON4 is
needed).
Necessarysignal– RPMsignal– connected toRPM1 terminal– S7.2 and S7.1
Speed request set toANAmode
In case ofANAlogue mode,the required speed iscontrolled viaAnalogue input S3.1 (voltage or
current signal,connected between terminalsS3.1 andS3.3).The binarycontrolsignals(Idle/Nominal,
Run/Stop, Droop)areevaluated fromthe binaryterminalsS4.3 – S4.8 asincaseofBINarymode.
In case the sourceofthe Analogue inputSpeed request to ECON-4 isComAp controller(e.g.
InteliSysNT), adjust the ComAp setpointsin the following way:
Sync/Load ctrl:SpeedGovBias=5Volts(for1500 RPM sets)
Sync/Load ctrl:SpeedGovLoLim=0 Volts
Sync/Load ctrl:SpeedGovHiLim=10 Volts
Sync/Load ctrl: Freq gain=5 %
