INSTALLATION
Connectingthe HoTelephone(Model3809X)
Connectingthis HoTelephoneto atelephonecompanyline mustbe
througha universalserviceordercode(USOC) outletjack. The
USOCjack codenumbersare:
l Single-linedesktelephone= RJ11C
l Single-linewall telephone= RJl 1W
If the installation site doesn’thavethe properjack(s) and inside
wiring, it istheuserorinstaller’sresponsibilityto arrangefor their
installation. The correctoutletjack for this equipmentis anin-
dustry-standardtype625A2-6jack wiredpertheUSOCjack code
number.
Local telephonecompanyregulationsmaynotpermit connections
topartylines andcoinlinesby anyoneexceptthetelephoneoperat-
ing company.
PreparingtheHoTelephonefor Wall Mounting
This telephoneis shippedfrom thefactoryconfiguredfor deskuse.
To convertfrom astandarddeskmodelto onethatcanbehungon
thewall, follow theprocedureoutlinedbelow.
1. Disconnectline cordfrom telephone.
2. Turn telephoneoverto exposelower housing.

The telephone cirtxitry is sensitiwe to static
electricity discharge. Be sure that your body
and the work place are properly grounded to
avoid any static electricity discharge while
step 3 is being performed.
3. Removescrewsthatattachlowerhousingtoupperhousing.
Carefully separatelower andupperhousingsmaking sure
notto disconnectwiring betweenbothhousings.
4. This telephoneis equippedwith adata/auxiliaryport.
l Removeholecoverfrom newopeningthatauxiliaryjack
is to occupy.

l Slide hole cover into old openingthat auxiliary jack
vacated.
5. Snaptaboutof openingin bottomof lower housing.Insert
into handsetcradleto createawall-mountinghookfor the
handset(Figure 1).
6. Carefullyreverselower housingend-for-end(rotateit 180
degrees).Do not disturb anyinternal wiring during this
process.
7. Refastenlower housingto upperhousing.
@Make surethatall wires areclear.
. Do not over-tighten screws when reinstalling lower
housing.
8. Route line cord through appropriatechannelon lower
housing,andreconnectit to telephone. A shortline cord
canbesubstitutedfor thestandardsuppliedoneif desired.
Wall Mounting theHoTelephone
Mount the telephonedirectly on the wall usingtwo #lO panhead
screws(obtainedlocally), or mountit onawall jack coverplate.If
you are usinga wall jack cover plate, anAT&T type 630Bwall
plate is recommendedfor bestresults.
1. If #lO screwsareused,threadthem into the wall within
Winch of thesurface. Referto Figure 1for thespacing
dimensions.
2. Position the keyhole-shapedholes in the bottom of the
telephoneover the #lO screwsor the cover plate studs.
Slidethetelephonedownuntil aslight click is felt.
3. Toremovethetelephone,lift tounsnapbothscrewsorstuds
from the bottom housing,andthenlift it away from the
Wall.

TELEPHONE OPERATION
Operatingthis single-linetelephone(Figure2) is straightforward
andeasy.

PROGRAMMING
Youmay storeupto 16keypaddigits includingthePAUSE orTAP
fixed feature,if needed,at programmablebutton locations for
autodialing.
All 12programmablebuttonsmay beusedfor numberstorage,or
youmayuse11programmablebuttonsfornumberstorageandstore
a SPEED button function in the lower right-handprogrammable
buttonlocation(Figure2). The SPEEDbuttonletsyou storeaddi-
tional numbersusing keypad locations. Memory contentsare
protectedby a long-life lithium battery,which providesmemory-
retainingpowerfor approximatelysevenyears.
Programmingcontrolsarelocatedbeneaththetelephonefaceplate.
Beforeyou removethefaceplate,removethe clearplastic cover
of the messagewaiting indicator by pulling it straightup.Then:

Remove the two-piece faceplateto gain accessto the
programmingcontrols.
Referto Figure2 for theactuallocationof thecontrolsfor
PAUSE, STORE, andTAP.
Look in theopenings- youwill seeasmall,silver,circular
actuatorin eachopening.This istheprogrammingcontrol.
To actuateeachcontrol,carefully pressdown onit with a
blunt wooden or plastic probe approximately l/8-in.
diameter.

NOTE: A two-second pause is stored each time the PAUSEcontrol is
pressed. A fured 650 msec hookswitchflash signal is stored each
time the TAP control is pressed. PAUSEandTAP each equal
one digit in the 16-digit total.
5. PressSTORE to endprogrammingsequence.After the
16thdigit is stored,the programming sequencewill end
automatically. Successtone(beep)will soundto indicate
successfulprogrammingsequence.
6. Repeatsteps2-5 for eachprogrammablebutton.

Ringer Volume
Changingthe ringervolume ontheModel 3809XHoTelephone,

MessageWaiting Light
Thetelephonemessagewaitinglight maybeturnedonby acentral
answeringserviceto alerttheuserthatamessageawaitspickup.
To receivemessages,
l Seelit messagewaiting light.
l Lift handset.
0 Dial message service number. When the message is
delivered, the light will be turned off by the answering
service.
NOTE: When the message waiting pair is connected to the tip and ring
pair of the line jack, the FCC registration code of the telephone
will be KX and the REiV will be 2. The telephone will be so
ma&d on the registration label attached to the bottom housing.
This Kx registered device is intended to be connected behind a
host PBX only. Direct connection to the CO line may not be
compatible and is not permitted without the prior approval of
the telephone company offie supplying the CO line.
Data/Auxiliary Port
This telephoneis equippedwith a data/auxiliaryport that is a
standardRJl 1configuredmodularjack andis connecteddirectly
acrossthetip andring leadsof thetelephoneline. This port is not
controlledby thetelephonehookswitch. It canbeusedto connect
adjunctdevicessuchasautodialers,modems,anddataterminalsto
thetelephoneline.
Some adjunctdevicescanbe operatedat the sametime that the
telephoneis off-hook while otherscannot. Refer to the manual
associatedwith thedevicefor completedetails.

FCC RULES AND REGULATIONS
This telephonecomplieswith FederalCommunicationsCommis-
sion(FCC) Rules,Part 68. The FCC registrationlabel attachedto
the bottom housing containsthe FCC registrationnumber, the
ringerequivalencenumber,themodelnumber,andtheserialnum-
ber or production date. The telephoneoperatingcompany can
requestthat they be providedwith the telephonenumber of the
TELCO line involved,theFCC registrationnumber,andtheringer
equivalencenumberof thistelephone.
The ringerequivalencenumber(REN) is ameasureof theload a
telephonedevice will placeon the ringing generatorof a central
office telephonecompanyline. Ingeneral,aREN of 1is equivalent
to theloadprovidedby onestandardtelephoneringer. FCC rules
statethatthe total REN load on aline shall not exceed5. When
contacted,thetelephonecompanywill provideinformationon the
maximum numberof telephonesor ringersthatcanbe connected
to oneline, aswell asanyotherapplicabletechnicalinformation.
Any problem with this equipmentthatcausesimproperoperation
of the telephonenetworkmay requirethe telephonecompanyto
disconnectserviceto thetroublesite. If possible,advancenotice
of thedisconnectwill begiven. If advancenoticeis notpractical,
notice will begiven assoonaspossible. The telephonecompany
will inform theuserof theright to file acomplaintwith theFCC.
The telephonecompanycan temporarily discontinueserviceand
make changesthat could affect the operationof this equipment;
however,it mustprovideadvancenoticeof anychangeto give the
usertheopportunityto maintainuninterruptedtelephoneservice.
Connectionof this telephoneto atelephonecompanyline mustbe
throughauniversal serviceordercode(USOC) outletjack. The
USOCjack codenumberfor a single-linetelephoneis RJllC. If
the installation site doesnot havethe properjack(s) and inside
wiring, it is the user/installer’sresponsibility to arrangefor its
installation. The correctoutletjack for this equipmentis an in-
dustrystandardtype 625A2-6jack wired pertheUSOCjack code
numberRI 11C.
Local telephonecompanyregulationsmaynot permit connections
to partylinesandcoinlinesby anyoneexceptthetelephoneoperat-
ingcompany.FCCregulationsdonotpermitrepairofthistelephone
by anyoneexceptthemanufactureror its authorizedagent.

RADIO FREQUENCY INTERFERENCE (RFI)
It ispossiblefor anelectronictelephonetogenerateradiofrequency
(RF) energywhile it is in use and interferewith radio andTV
reception.This telephonehasbeentestedandfoundtocomplywith
radiationlimits for a ClassB computingdevice,pursuantto FCC
Rules andRegulations,Part 15,SubpartJ. Theseregulationsare
designedto providereasonableprotectionagainstRFI.
Thereisno guaranteethatinterferencewill notoccurin aparticular
installation. If atelephonedoescauseinterferenceto radioor TV
reception(which canbedeterminedbyunpluggingthetelephone),
try to correcttheinterferenceasfollows:
0 Reorientthereceivingantennaof theaffectedelectronic
device.
l Relocatetheaffecteddeviceorthetelephone.
l Plugtheaffecteddeviceinto adifferentAC outlet.
