1. Before Using the Product
FX-DS540-AP, FX-DS540-APP 1
1. Before Using the Product
This chapter provides information you should know before using the FX-DS540-AP/APP.
About the FX-DS540-AP/APP
The FX-DS540-AP/APP is a wireless LAN PC Card using OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division
Multiplexing) in the 5 GHz band. It conforms to the wireless LAN standard specification IEEE 802.11a.
The FX-D540-AP/APP enables high-speed communication at up to 54 Mbps when used in combination
with the FX-DS540-PCC/PCC2, the PC card model in the FX-DS540 series.
The FX-DS540-AP and FX-DS540-APP are functionally equivalent to each other.
The FX-D540 series is an IEEE 802.11a compliant, high-speed wireless LAN series providing a
maximum transmission speed of 54 Mbps and robust security while inheriting the unique features highly
evaluated mainly by business users such as IP tunneling and roaming. It not only meets the needs for
faster transmission speeds of wireless LANs but also provides a new environment of a wireless LAN
network, for example, by letting the 54 Mbps wireless LAN and 11 Mbps wireless LAN coexist
seamlessly.
The FX-D540-AP is powered from a wall outlet (100 VAC). It can also be powered via a network cable
when using the UTP cable power separator unit POW-SP20 and the power supply unit POW-CB20 or
POW-CBM44.
The FX-DS540-APP can be powered via a network cable when using the power supply unit POW-CB20
or POW-CBM4. It can also be powered from a wall outlet (100 VAC) through the AC adapter.
This document explains how to use the FX-DS540- AP/APP. Be sure to read it carefully so that you can
use the product correctly.
The FLEXLAN DS540 series employs a wireless LAN chip manufactured by Atheros Communications Inc. The main
board, firmware, and enhancements are developed by CONTEC based on its abundant experience and technical skills
in LAN.
Features
- High-speed link at 54 Mbps max, providing throughput more than five times higher than that of the 11
Mbps wireless LAN.
- With the 11 Mbps compact flash wireless card FX-Ds110-CFC (separately available) plugged, the
FX-DS540-AP/APP can serve as a dual-band access point that accommodates the CONTEC
FLEXLAN DS100 series and 11 Mbps wireless LAN devices in the 2.4 GHz band as well.
- High-speed RISC chip integrated, providing processing speed four times faster than that of the
CONTEC’s conventional product, getting the full benefit of the high-speed processing capability of
a 54 Mbps wireless LAN, and enabling smooth operation free of stress even in dual-band mode.
- A single unit of FX-DS540-AP/APP accepts log-in from up to 254 stations.
In dual-band mode (with the FX-DS110-CFC plugged), simultaneous log-in is accepted from up to
254 stations in the 5 GHz band and from up to 254 stations in the 2.4 GHz band.
- Provided with a dipole diversity antenna immune to multipath interference, providing a wireless
communication coverage of about 30 m at 54 Mbps or about 100 m at 6 Mbps. (The coverage
depends on the environment.)

1. Before Using the Product
2 FX-DS540-AP, FX-DS540-APP
- Easy configuration and management using a WWW browser. Assorted maintenance methods are
available to different systems and applications, including the terminal, FTP commands, TELNET,
and CF card.
- IP tunneling feature integrated (*1), enabling communication even at a roaming destination beyond
the router without making any changes to network configuration.
- SNMP agent feature integrated (*1), enabling network management using SNMP supported
network management software (such as CONTEC SNMPc). MIBII and private MIB are supported.
- Firmware storage CF card (32 MB) bundled, allowing log and configuration information to be saved
to and restored from and firmware to be updated collectively.
*1 IP tunneling will be supported in the near future.
The latest versions of software including firmware can be downloaded from the CONTEC’s web site

1. Before Using the Product
FX-DS540-AP, FX-DS540-APP 3
Outline of the FLEXLAN-DS540 series
The FLEXLAN DS540 series is a wireless LAN PC Card adopting OFDM in the 5 GHz band, which has
the following features.
Features of the FLEXLAN-DS540 series
IEEE 802.11a compliant, 5 GHz band wireless LAN
The FLEXLAN DS540 series conforms to the new wireless LAN standard specification “IEEE 802.11a”
that applies to the OFDM encoding scheme in the 5 GHz band with less radio interference. The 5 GH
band wireless LAN provides a clearer radio communications environment than the 2.4 GHz band
wireless LAN.
The FLEXLAN DS540 series is classified as “radio equipment for a radio station in a low-power data
communications system” defined in the Wireless Telegraphy Act, requiring no radio transmission
license.
Data transfer rate of 54 Mbps
The product switches its data rate automatically to 54, 48, 36, 24, 18, 12, 9, or 6 Mbps depending on the
radio conditions. It will be provided with a link speed setting feature focusing on speed and stability.
Robust security provided
The FLEXLAN DS540 series supports the 64-, 128, and 152-bit types of WEP(RC4). Using WEP in
combination with WSL (Wireless Security Link with a proprietary cryptography) provides more robust
security. WEP can be used single-handedly, too. The FLEXLAN DS540 series will also support IEEE
802.1x specifying the latest protocol for security.
Capable of using 11 Mbps and 54 Mbps systems at the same time
You can install a 54 Mbps wireless LAN system while maintaining an existing 11 Mbps wireless LAN
only by inserting an 11 Mbps wireless CF card of FX-DS110-CFC (separately available) at an access
point. A flexible system can be implemented, for example, by constructing an 11 Mbps wireless LAN in
the open air where the use of the 5 GHz band is restricted by the Wireless Telegraphy Act and a 54 Mbps
wireless LAN indoors.
Capable of interconnection with a Wi-Fi compliant wireless LAN device
The FLEXLAN DS540 series can communicate, using basic features, with a Wi-Fi compliant device such as a
non-FLEXLAN wireless LAN card, wireless LAN integrated notebook PC. With this feature, you can get the
most out of wireless LAN resources.
Note! This feature does not guarantee the connection of the FX-DS540-PCC to all of Wi-Fi compliant devices.
Enhancements such as IP tunneling can be used with a product other than the FLEXLAN series.
Multi-channel support
Four channels (channels 34, 38, 42, and 46) can be used. Using different channels for wireless networks
adjacent to each other prevents radio interference and improves the throughput of either network.
IP tunneling function *1
Even when a wireless terminal with a fixed IP address assigned moves to (roam) a segment different in
IP beyond the router, you can continue communication without making changes to settings.

2 Functions and Wireless Link Mode
FX-DS540-AP, FX-DS540-APP 11
2. Functions and Wireless Link Mode
This chapter describes the major functions of the FLEXLAN DS540 series as a wireless LAN system and
the wireless link modes of the FX-D540-AP/APP along with configuration examples of networks
available in the wireless link modes.
Roaming Function
The roaming function maintains the connection to the LAN by automatically changing the access point
to which the user unit is connected when the unit moves. If access points are positioned so as to cover
the entire area where the wireless LAN is to be available, the user unit can be used from anywhere.
When the wireless link mode of a FLEXLAN-DS540 user unit is “Standard Infrastructure” or “Compatible
Infrastructure”, it is designed to continuously monitor the AP (access point) signal strength and change to
the AP that provides the most reliable communications.
In the following example, the signals from the APs do not cover the entire range in which the mobile
station U1 moves and therefore the connection to the wired LAN is lost when U1 is in position (2).
