1. General
This instruction describes the recommended procedures for loading ber optic cable into the SCF-1296/1728
Heat-Shrink Open Ribbon System (ORS) Canister Closure (Figure 1).
Contact your customer service representative to purchase accessories that are sold separately.
2. Tools and Materials
The following tools and materials are required to complete this installation:
• Tape measure
• Scissors
• Side cutters
• Cable knife/stripping tool
• 1/2-inch deep socket and ratchet
• 3/8-in nut driver
• 7/16-in nut driver
• 5/16-in nut driver
(to install sheath retention clamp)
• 11/32-in nut driver
• 10 mm socket and ratchet
• Flat-tip screwdriver
• Phillips screwdriver
• Permanent marker pen
• Paint marker pen
• Aluminum tape
• Electrical tape
• Heat gun
• Torque wrench
• Hand pump
• Air pressure gauge
• Soapy water (to verify leaks)
3. Carton Contents
Each carton contains the following:
• (1) Closure dome
• (1) ORS ber management assembly
• (1) Heat-shrink end cap
• (2) Ground assembly
• (1) Clamping ring
• (1) End cap sealing ring
• (1) Accessory kit (containing express
heat-shink tube, branching clip, and
UCN lubricant)
4. Prepare the Cable
CAUTION: The wearing of cut-resistant safety gloves to protect your hands from accidental injury
when using sharp-bladed tools and armored cable is strongly recommended. Use extreme care when
working with severed armor. There will be a sharp edge where armor is cut. To minimize the chance
of injury from the cut armor, cover the exposed edge with a wrap of electrical tape. To minimize the
chance of injury from sharp-bladed tools, always cut away from yourself and others. Dispose of used
blades and armor scrap properly.
CAUTION: Recommend the use of safety glasses (spectacles) conforming to ANSI Z87, for eye
protection from accidental injury when handling chemicals, cables or ber. Pieces of glass ber are
very sharp and have the potential to damage the eye.
CAUTION: Fiber optic cable is sensitive to excessive pulling, bending, and crushing forces. Consult the
cable specication sheet for the cable you are installing. Do not bend the cable more sharply than the
minimum recommended bend radius. Do not apply more pulling force to the cable than specied. Do
not crush the cable or allow it to kink. Doing so may cause damage that can alter the transmission
characteristics of the cable; the cable may have to be replaced.

One express (mid-span) cable may be placed in the express port or up to two individual cables may be installed
using the supplied three-nger clip.
Step 1: Place a wrap of tape around the cable sheath at the distance specied in Figure 2. Remove indicated
length of cable sheath and armor (where applicable) according to cable manufacturer’s instructions.

IMPORTANT: Do not expose the bare bers until after the cable has been placed in the closure end cap. Do not
untwist the subunits or remove their jacketing.
Step 2: Pull the outer jacket open to the tape mark (Figure 3). Ring cut about halfway through the GRP rods
and polyethelene jacket. Bend the jacket back.
Step 3: After jacket is bent back, cut o the jacket and GRP rods (Figure 4). Then remove water-swellable tape
with scissors.

Ribbon Cable for Drop Cable (non-mid-span)
5. Prepare End Cap
Step 1: Remove the frame from the end cap.
Step 2: Open the appropriate cable port for your application based on the table in Figure 5. When using ports
other than the oval port, use a taller port before using a shorter port. Oval ports line up best with
central slack well.

a. Carefully tap the end using a punch or a nut driver (Figure 6).
b. Clean the port opening with a le to remove any rough edges.
6. Continue Cable Preparation
Step 1: Remove indicated length of cable sheath and armor (where
applicable) according to Figure 2.
Step 2: Slide the heat-shrink tubing over the cable as shown in Figure 7.
NOTE: Heat-shrink tubes for drop ports are purchased separately.
Step 3: Mark the cable 229 mm (9 in) from sheath opening and slide it through the port.
Step 4: Pull the cable through the end cap an additional 300 mm (12 in) or until you pass the mark on the
cable.

7. Install Strain-relief Hardware in Express Port
Refer to SRP 206-288 (Heat-shrink End Cap Canister Closure Sealing Checklist) to ensure all critical steps for
sealing the closure have been performed accurately.
Step 1: Wrap a large hose clamp around the bracket and cable approximately 6 mm (0.25 inches) below the
sheath opening (Figure 8).
Step 2: Position the hose clamp with the tensioning body on the same side of the bracket as the threaded
stud.
Step 3: Tighten the hose clamp in the notch on the bracket.
NOTE: Make sure the tensioning body on the hose clamp is positioned as shown.
Step 4: Secure the assembly to the end cap using the provided screw (Figure 9).
8. Install Cable
CAUTION: Use sealing paste and cable cleaner in a well-ventilated area to eliminate the possibility of
dizziness and nausea. If paste or cleaner comes in contact with skin or eyes, wash area immediately
with soap and water to avoid irritation. Do not induce vomiting if paste or cleaner is ingested.
IMPORTANT: Torches are not recommended for the application of the heat-shrink tubes included with this kit.
Certain combinations of cable sheath materials and torches may cause sheath blistering. To avoid
sheath damage, aluminum tape (2.5-in width) can be applided cylindrically around the cable
sheath (Figure 10). The cable must be cleaned and roughened before installing the tape. Center
the tape over the mark made in Section 6. Press the tape smooth at the edges to prevent possible
pathways for water intrusion.
Step 1: Clean and roughen the cable approximately 75
or 100 mm (3 or 4 inches) towards the end of the
cable using the supplied sandpaper.
Step 2: Roughen the appropriate cable port to ensure
heat-shrink adhesion.
Step 3: Carefully preheat the port and cable with the heat
gun.
Step 4: Slide the heat-shrink tube over the port until it
butts against the end cap.
Step 5: Pull the cable(s) back through the port.

Step 6: If more than one cable is being installed in the oval port, position the 3-nger clip between the two
cables at the end of the heat-shrink tube (Figure 11).
Step 7: Hold the cable while heating to prevent any movement.
Step 8: Beginning at the port, gradually move a heat gun down the tube. Allow this portion of the tube to
cool before shrinking the rest of the tube onto the cable.
9. Attach Frame to End Cap
Step 1: Remove splice plane and slack storage covers Section Figure 12.

Step 2: Secure the end cap on the work surface (table) with the express cable to the top.
Step 3: Lay all the ribbon ber from the express ports in a bundle in the middle storage area (Figure 13).
Step 4: Hold the express bers in one hand and the ORS frame in the other hand.
Step 5: Carefully reposition the ORS frame and secure it to the end cap.
IMPORTANT: Make sure the end cap is oriented so that the express cables transition smoothly into the middle
storage area of the frame with no sharp bends in the cable.

10. Load Express Fibers
IMPORTANT: Basic ribbon ber routing requires Ribbon “A” spliced to Ribbon “B.” Ribbon “B” will be routed to
the side of the splice plane opposite from Ribbon“A.”
• For sub-ribbon splicing, split the ribbon matrix with appropriate equipment (P/N RST-000
or equivalent) and separate ribbon matrix within 6 in of cable sheath opening. Secure this
separation point with tape.
Step 1: Form the subunits from each cable into a single slack loop placed into the middle storage
compartment of the frame (Figure 14) and cover. Route the extra length toward the side storage
compartments.
NOTE: Do not yet route any bers or subunits in the side storage compartment, but rather let subunit lay free
until splicing each subunit.

Step 2: Select the rst subunit, align along the tongue of the side storage compartment making a mark
where the tongue ends.

Step 3: Peel the subunit to the mark exposing the ribbons.
Step 4: Using the ribbon splitting tool (Corning P/N RST-000), split each 24-ber ribbon into 12-ber groups.
Organize the ribbons in the desired splicing order. Secure the order with some non-aggressive tape,
such as painter’s tape.
NOTE: Only use the ribbon splitting tool on the rst two to four inches of ribbon. Clean excess ribbon matrix
from the tool often. Split the rest of the ribbon length by hand.
Step 5: Create a loop with the ribbon bundle and work it into the side storage area for splicing slack. It is
recommended to place subsequent loops at slightly direrent length. Bring the ribbon bundle out of
the side slack storage area, through clip A, and up to the splicing deck.

Step 6: Take the bundle of bers wrapped in tape through the side plastic clip (“B”) and remove the tape.
Step 7: Close the clip to secure the bers within it (Figure 17).

Step 8: Open the plastic clip on the splice plane (“C”) and lay
the bers inside.
Step 9: Carefully close the clip (Figure 18).
Step 10: Lay the bers all the way down the splice plane on
the side of the organizer while maintaining a full loop
of slack in the storage area.
Step 11: Temporarily secure the bers at the bottom of the
ORS with another piece of tape (Figure 19).
Step 12: Repeat Section 10 for the other side.
11. Splice
Step 1: Prepare bers and splice:
a. To ensure the appropriate length of slack
bers, cut the bers extending beyond
the bottom of the closure as shown in
Figure 20.
b. Remove the tape from the bers.
c. Remove the bers from the top plastic clips.
d. Lay all bers on the table.
e. Determine which two ribbon bers are to
be spliced (one from the left and one from the right).
f. Route them through the clip again and into the bottom of the closure. Do not close the clip at this
time.
g. Bring the two bers to the appropriate position in the organizer.
h. Temporarily lay the bers in the organizer to determine the required length.
i. Cut both bers at the same time in the center of the organizer.

IMPORTANT: Before cutting, make sure there is a complete loop of bers in the side storage compartment and
the bers lie neatly in the trough of the splice plane.
Step 2: Splice the bers according to the appropriate instructions
for the splicing equipment you are using.
Step 3: Insert the protected splice (heat-shrink splice protectors
are recommended) back into the rst slot in the
organizer.
Step 4: Repeat for all required splices. Install splices into the
organizer consecutively (Figure 21).
NOTE: Each slot in the organizer accepts two splices. Install the
second splice on top of the rst splice before proceeding to
the next slot in the organizer.
Step 5: Secure the spliced ribbons in the clips on the splicing
plane. Conrm the bers do not exceed the minimum
bend radius.
Step 6: Slide the plastic cover underneath the retaining
bracket on the side compartment as shown.

12. Seal the Closure
Refer to SRP 206-288 (Heat-shrink End Cap Canister Closure Sealing Checklist) to ensure all critical steps for
sealing the closure have been performed accurately.
NOTE: Do not use liquid encapsulant in SCF closures.
12.1 Install Seal
Step 1: Roll the sealing ring over frame (Figure 23) and up
to the end cap.
IMPORTANT: The sealing ring must be installed in the
orientation shown.

Step 2: Use the supplied brush to apply a third of the UCN lubricant to the sealing ring channel on the end
cap (Figure 24).
Step 3: Stretch the sealing ring over the channel.
Step 4: Fold the edge of the seal that overlaps the outside of the end cap until the seal seats in the channel as
shown in Figure 25.
Step 5: Retain a small amount of UCN lubricant for later use. Apply the remaining lubricant to all sides of the
sealing ring.
12.2 Install the Canister Cover.
Step 1: Slide the canister over the closure assembly.
Step 2: Loosen bolt on the hinged side of the clamping ring.
Step 3: Apply a thin coat of UCN lubricant retained previously to the threads of the clamping ring latch bolts
to prevent the bolts from seizing on reentry.
Step 4: Place the clamping ring over the ange of the canister and the sealing ring. Ensure that both the
sealing ring and the canister ange are within the clamping ring (Figure 26).
Step 5: Swing the clamping ring into closing position. Tighten the bolts until the plastic on the ring touches,
then tighten a quarter turn until the ring is completely closed.
IMPORTANT: A torque value of 25 to 50 in-lb should be sucient to close the clamping ring. Do not use power
tools to tighten the ring; a torque value of more than 80 in-lb causes the hardware to crack and
the clamping ring to become defective. If the clamping ring does not close properly, make sure the
sealing ring and clamping ring are oriented correctly.

13. Perform Flash Test
Step 1: Inject 12 to 14 psi (maximum) of air into the closure
using a hand pump (Figure 27). Check pressure after
each 25 pumps.
WARNING: To avoid a potentially hazardous
situation that could result in death or serious
injury, do not exceed 14 psi (100 kpa) gauge
pressure. The closure could burst.
Step 2: Apply soapy water to the edges of the heat-shrink
tubing and watch closure for signs of leakage
(bubbling of soap).
NOTE: A correctly sealed closure maintains pressure with no leaks.
Step 3: After the ash test has been performed and the closure sealed correctly, carefully remove the air valve
and allow air to escape.
14. Ground the Closure (Optional)
Step 1: Apply a thin coat of lubricant retained previously to the threads of a
solid, two-piece, nonvented grounding plug (Figure 28).
Step 2: Install the larger plug into the end cap from the outside of the end cap
nger- tight, then another half turn (approximately 40 to 60 in-lb)
Step 3: Connect a grounding cable (not supplied) to the plug.
Step 4: Screw the smaller insert into the plug.
Step 5: Tighten the insert using a small adjustable wrench.
Step 6: Terminate the other end of the ground per local practices.

APPENDIX A
Drop Port Cables
IMPORTANT: If the cable used is made with a metal central/strength member, use the grounding connector as
for the armored cable, with the extension bracket to strain-relieve the central/strength member
and ground it.
Step 1: Remove nuts from the ground clamp.
Step 2: Attach the extension bracket, then the top plate (Figure 29). Tap
the top plate to set the teeth into the cable.
Step 3: Tighten clamp using one nut.
Step 4: Trim the central/strength member slightly shorter than the top of
the extension bracket (Figure 30).
(When strength member is metal, bend it over the slots in the
extension bracket as shown in the inset in Figure 30 and then
trim excess strength member.)
Step 5: Wrap the strength member yarn around the restraint cap stud
(Figure 31). Position the cap behind the extension bracket.
For small strength members (less than 3mm in diameter)
Step 1: Insert the restraint cap threaded stud through the upper hole in the strain-relief bracket, capturing
the strength member between the two.
Step 2: With the strength member behind the bracket, install a nut on the restraint cap threaded stud
(Figure 31).
Step 3: Secure the cap to the extension bracket using the supplied nut (Figure 31). Conrm that all buer
tubes are clear of the strength members and tighten securely.

For large strength members (greater than 3mm in diameter)
Step 1: Use the supplied strain-relief kit, instead of the restraint caps (Figure 32).
Step 2: Slide the metal tube over the end of the central
member.
Step 3: Align the threads in the side of the tube with the
hole in the strain-relief bracket.
Step 4: Install the supplied screw through the bracket and
the threaded hole in the tube and tighten .
