NOTE:
You are working with an electrical equipment, please refer to all safety instructions
based on the RTS IOM.
This troubleshooting document should provide a guideline and instructions on a
step-by-step basis to identify and solve issues related to RTS actuators.
It is essential to complete all steps, as the majority of failures can be resolved in one
of the steps in troubleshooting guide I or II.
Please keep in mind that the RTS actuator is using state of the art technology, which
brings a lot of diagnostics with it. Together with the SMARTTOOL software, issues are
identied within a short period of time and therefore helps to reduce downtime on
customer sites.
RTS actuators are not purely electro-mechanical electric actuators, within
the RTS all data are logged and can be accessed and used for further analysis
and troubleshooting.
RTS FQ and FL units are spring-return electro-mechanical fail-safe actuators, using
a standard electric actuator with a brake assembly and a spring pack. Due to the
additional components, there are minor but extremely important dierences on
how to setup RTS FQ and FL units compared to standard RTS CM actuator without
fail-safe function.
To summarize the key points for using this troubleshooting guide:
• Make yourself comfortable with SMARTTOOL software;
• Make sure you understand the fail-safe technology and its dierence to
standard electric actuators;
• Make sure you follow the step-by step instructions; and
• Make sure you have attended proper training classes based on the level of the
troubleshooting guide.

1.1 Prepare Failure Description
Please work out a detailed failure description answering the following questions:
• How should the actuator perform?
• How is the actuator currently performing?
• What happened and since when is the issue existing?
• Any other important details during the lifetime of the actuator?
All necessary documents related to the appearing issue must be provided
(photos, wiring diagrams, measurements, etc.).
1.2 Perform Visual Inspection
Inspect the unit properly, all conspicuousness should be reported
(what is not normal?).
Please check the details of the following:
• Sealing areas
• Handwheel locking mechanism on RTS FQ and FL units
• Proper function of handwheel
• Tightness of mechanical backstop on RTS FQ units
• Mechanical connection between actuator and valve

1.3 Capture Actuator Serial Number and Key
Please make sure to capture the actuator serial number and even more important –
the "key", as without this information, any further support cannot be provided.

1.4 Download SMARTTOOL Setup File
Please request to download and install SMARTTOOL2 software on your PC through
your Emerson sales representative.
For more details on how to install SMARTTOOL and to apply for a license, please
check SMARTTOOL User Manual, "Installation and Update" section.
Please connect to the actuator, save the setup le and provide it for further analysis.
If the display does not come up by powering on the main power line, the display can
be powered separately by connecting 24 V DC to terminals 1 and 2 to download the
setup le.

1.5 Observe Error Code on the Display
Upon warning or error, the bottom line of the display will show a failure code and
text message. This event will be also logged in the history. If there are more than one
warning or error occurred, the dierent messages are alternating on the screen.
A matrix on various failure codes including recommended actions can be found on
the RTS IOM, "History Entries" section.
A detailed error code list including root causes can be provided in a separate manual
according to your training level.

1.6 Perform Further Checks and Measurements
The screen is not on live?
The screen is red, but not indicating an error code?
The motor is moving, but there is no mechanical output?
Please follow the checklist for further analysis:
1. Power supply is okay and stable?
a. Actuator with 3 PH power supply (SDC480)
— Check if stable 380 V DC are available at terminals L+ and L-.
b. Actuator with 24 V DC power supply
— Check if stable 24 V DC (+/-10%) are available when actuator
is moving.

2. Are there any signals present or sources which could cause the
current behavior?
• Check if any sources around causing big electromagnetic elds.
• Check if any sources around causing distortion on power supply.
3. Main fuse
• Check on WP models if main fuse is still OK.
4. External fail-safe power supply
• Check if 24 V DC is present and stable.
• Check if 24 V DC is stable during actuator movement.

5. General check of wiring
• Check if everything is wired correctly according to wiring diagram.
• Check if there is any loose or damaged cable visible.
6. Mechanical connection valve to actuator
• Check if ange and bushing is mounted properly.
• Check if there is no misalignment on extensions or brackets.

1.7 Allow Remote Troubleshooting
An Emerson RTS service partner with training level 325 and SMARTTOOL expert
license installed can also connect remotely to your actuator. An internet connection is
needed as well as SMARTTOOL standard license installed.
To allow such connection, please:
1. Make sure your internet connection is ON.
2. Make sure your Antivirus software allows SMARTTOOL to be accessed by
the web.
3. Open SMARTTOOL.
4. Connect to the actuator.
5. Press REMOTE icon.

6. Wait until you see the following on the screen.
7. If the screen does not show up, please press the REMOTE icon again.
8. The actuator is now online and can be accessed.
9. Please do not "disconnect", unless the remote work is nished.
