Introducon
This guide provides product informaon for the USB 2.0 DIGI-USB2-4P, installaon instrucons and
troubleshoong guidelines. The instrucons in this guide assume a general knowledge of computer installaon
procedures, familiarity with cabling requirements and some understanding of USB devices.
NOTE: Notes provide addional informaon that could be useful.
CAUTION: Cauons provide important informaon about an operaonal requirement.

About the DIGI-USB2-4P
The USB 2.0 DIGI-USB2-4P incorporates ExtremeUSB® technology, enabling users to extend USB beyond the
standard 5m cable limit for USB 2.0 peripheral devices. The DIGI-USB2-4P extender system is composed of two
individual units: the Local Extender and the Remote Extender and has the following key features:
• 100m of extension when directly connected over CAT 5e/6/7 cables
• Support for new USB 3.0 host controllers and devices
• Support for bulk and HID type devices (storage and mouse/keyboard types)
USB 3.0 devices will perform at USB 2.0 speeds if extended through the DIGI-USB2-4P.

The Local Extender
The local extender unit connects to the computer using a standard USB 2.0 cable. Power for this unit is provided
by the host computer.

When the local and remote extenders are in suspend mode, the LED is o.

7 USB Host Port Used to connect the local extender unit to the host computer. Accepts Type B
connector into the local extender unit.
8 Link Port (RJ45) Accepts RJ45 connector for CAT5e/6/7 cabling to connect the local extender unit
to the remote extender unit.

The Remote Extender
The remote extender unit provides USB Type A ports for standard USB devices. The remote extender unit allows
you to connect up to four USB devices directly. Addional devices may be connected by aaching up to four USB
hubs to the remote extender unit. The remote extender is powered by an external AC adapter and can supply
up to 600mA to each USB port.

Installing the DIGI-USB2-4P System
Requirements
To complete the installaon, you will require the following items that are not included with this system:
• USB compable computer (host computer) with a USB compliant operang system
• USB compable device(s)
• CAT 5e/6/7 Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cable with two RJ45 connectors (if using surface cabling),
or CAT 5e/6/7 cabling with two informaon outlets and two CAT 5e/6/7 patch cords with RJ45
connectors (if using premise cabling).
Preparing Your Site
Before installing the DIGI-USB2-4P, you will need to prepare your site:
1. Place the computer where desired and set it up.
2. Ensure to locate the USB device(s) within a cable-length distance of 100m to the computer. If not,
adjust the locaon of the devices and/or computer accordingly.
3. If you are using surface cabling, install the CAT 5e/6/7 cabling as desired and terminate it with the
appropriate RJ45 ends.
4. If using premise cabling (in-building network infrastructure), ensure your cabling does not exceed
100m and that it meets CAT 5e/6/7 specicaon.
If you are using premise cabling, ensure CAT 5e/6/7 cabling is installed between the two locaons
and if necessary patched together. CAT 5e/6/7 informaon outlets should be located near the
computer and the USB device(s), and the total length, including patch cords must be less than 100m.
Cable installaon is important, parcularly if high throughput applicaons are used. When installing, ensure the cable is
installed away from, or isolated from potenal sources of interference such as electrical wiring, uorescent lighng, etc.
When terminang cables, ensure the matching RJ45 connector is used for the cable type. For example, if CAT 6 cable is
used, then CAT 6 compable RJ45 connectors must be used. If this care is not taken, the benets of higher grade
cabling may not be realized.

Installing the Local Extender
1. Place the local extender near the computer.
2. Connect the supplied USB cable between the local extender host port and a USB port on the
host computer.
Connecng the Local Extender to the Remote Extender
With Surface Cabling
1. Connect the CAT 5e/6/7 cable into the Link port of the Local Extender.
2. Connect the CAT 5e/6/7 cable into the Link port of the Remote Extender.
With Premise Cabling
1. Connect a CAT 5e/6/7 patch cable (not provided) into the informaon outlet near the host computer.
2. Connect the patch cable into the Link port of the local extender.
3. Connect a CAT 5e/6/7 patch cable (not provided) into the informaon outlet near the USB devices.
4. Connect the patch cable into the Link port of the remote extender.
Installing the Remote Extender
1. Place the remote extender near the USB device(s).
2. Assemble the power adapter and country specic power cord together and connect them into a
suitable AC outlet.
3. Connect the power adapter to the remote extender.

Checking the Installaon
1. On the local and remote extenders, check that the Power, Status, Link and Host LEDs are on.
If the Host or Link LEDs are permanently o, then the cabling between the local and remote
extenders may not be installed properly or is defecve.
2. For Windows users (XP, 7, 8), open Device Manager to conrm that the DIGI-USB2-4P has installed
correctly. Expand the entry for Universal Serial Bus controllers by clicking the “+” sign. If the
DIGI-USB2-4P has been installed correctly, you should nd it listed as a “Generic USB Hub”.
To open Device Manager in Windows XP:
Right click “My Computer” then select: Properes >> Hardware tab >> Device Manager
To open Device Manager in Windows 7:
Open the Start menu, right click on “Computer” then select: Manage >> Device Manager
To open Device Manager in Windows 8, 8.1 or 10:
Right click the Start Menu and then select: Device Manager
3. For OS X users, open the System Proler to conrm that the DIGI-USB2-4P has installed correctly.
In the le hand column under Hardware, select “USB” and inspect the right hand panel.
If the DIGI-USB2-4P has been installed correctly, you should nd it listed as a “Hub” under the
USB High-Speed Bus/USB Bus.
To open System Proler in OS X:
Open the Finder, select Applicaons, then open the Ulies folder and double click on the System Proler icon.
4. If the DIGI-USB2-4P is not detected correctly or fails to detect, please consult the Troubleshoong
secon in this guide.

Connecng a USB Device
1. Install any soware required to operate the USB device(s). Refer to the documentaon for the USB
device(s), as required.
2. Connect the USB device to the device port on the remote extender.
3. Check that the device is detected and installed properly in the operang system.
Compability
The USB 2.0 DIGI-USB2-4P complies with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 specicaons governing the design of USB
devices. However, it is not possible to guarantee that all USB devices or hosts will be compable with the DIGI-
USB2-4P, as there are a number of dierent characteriscs that may impact the operaon of USB devices over
extended distances.

USB Extender Mounng Opons
The boom of the DIGI-USB2-4P enclosures feature four convenient pre-drilled holes for oponal mounng.
Based on your requirements, choose from two available mounng opons:
1. USB Extender Mounng Kit (Purchased separately Order Part # 10-00394 USB Mounng Kit - Black
2. USB Extender Direct Surface Mounng (Using your own hardware, stencil provided on page 11)
OPTION 1: USB Extender Mounng Kit - each kit includes:
• 2 mounng brackets
• 4 (M3.0) locking washers
• 4 (M3.0 x 5mm) Phillips pan head screws
• Mounng bracket installaon guide (see diagram below)
1 kit required to mount per Local Extender or Remote Extender
Using a Phillips screwdriver, in the order as illustrated below, fasten and secure the provided screws, locking
washers and brackets into place.
Once the bracket mounng is secured onto the extender, it is ready for mounng onto a surface. Please note
you will need to provide your own screws to secure the extender using the available slots on each bracket.

OPTION 2: USB Extender Direct Surface Mounng (using your own hardware)
The boom of the DIGI-USB2-4P enclosures features four pre-drilled holes for oponal surface mounng.
Distance between the enclosure mounng holes:
42.0mm x 77. 0mm
1. Mark the center point of each of the four holes on your mounng surface either by directly measuring or
using a print out of the stencil below.
2. Hardware recommendaon: M3.0 locking washers and M3.0 screws (4 of each per extender) nong
screw length will depend upon thickness of mounng surface.
3. Drill through each of the four hole markings on the mounng surface using a 4.7625mm (3/16”) drill bit.
4. Align the boom enclosure holes to the newly drilled out holes on the mounng surface.
5. Place a locking washer on each of the four screws and using a screwdriver, fasten the extender into place.
To ensure the stencil below prints to scale be sure to set the page scaling seng to “none”.

Troubleshoong
The following table provides troubleshoong ps. The topics are arranged in the order in which they should be
executed in most situaons.
PROBLEM CAUSE SOLUTION

1. Ensure that the host computer is connected to
the local extender.
2. Move the USB connector to another USB port
on the host computer.

1. Ensure that the AC power adapter is properly
connected to the remote extender.
2. Check that the AC adapter is connected to a live
source of electrical power. Check that the remote
extender’s power LED is illuminated.

1. Ensure CAT 5e/6/7 cable is connected between
the local and remote extender units; cable
should be UTP or STP, with a straight through
connector and no crossovers, and 8 conductor

2. Connect a short CAT 5e/6/7 patch cord between
the local and remote extenders to determine if
the original CAT 5e/6/7 cable is defecve.

6. In the Universal Serial Bus controllers secon of
Device Manager, check that the DIGI-USB2-4P is
recognized as a “Generic USB Hub”.

Technical Glossary
Category 5e/6/7 (CAT 5e/6/7) Network Cabling
Category 5e/6/7 cable is commonly also referred to as Cat 5e or CAT 6 or CAT 7. This cabling is available in
either solid or stranded twisted pair copper wire variants and as UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) or STP (Shielded
Twisted Pair). UTP cables are not surrounded by any shielding making them more suscepble to electromagnec
interference (EMI). STP cables include shielding the copper wires and provides beer protecon against
electromagnec interference (EMI).
USB 2.0 Cables
USB 2.0 cables have two disnct full-sized connectors. The Type A connector is used to connect the cable from a
USB device to the Type A port on a computer or hub. The Type B connector is used to aach the USB cable to a
USB device.
RJ45
The Registered Jack (RJ) physical interface is what connects the network cabling (Cat 5e/6/7) to the Local
Extender unit and Remote Extender unit. You may use either the T568A scheme (Table 1) or the T568B scheme
(Table 2) for cable terminaon as the USB 2.0 DIGI-USB2-4P requires all four pairs of the cable. RJ45 connectors
are somemes also referred to as 8P8C connectors. Note that any given cable must be terminated using the
same T568 scheme on both ends to operate correctly.
