(1) Quick Installation Guide
(1) TAP-DS3E3 Single Port Copper Tap
Introduction
The DS3/E3-PT is a single-port device that provides
an easy method to passively monitor network traffic
flowing between E3, DS3/T3 or STS-1 devices using
your network analysis tools. Using your passive tap,
your network analysis tools can be quickly and effectively
deployed to the point of failure. Typically the passive
tap is installed on a critical E3, DS3/T3 or STS-1 link in
the network where monitoring and analysis capabilities
are important.
DS3/E3-PT features and benefits:
• Optimized: E3, DS3/T3 and STS-1 -compatible
• Full-duplex monitoring
• Non-intrusive passive monitoring device
• Fully isolated Tx and Rx circuitry
• Rack-mountable small form factor
• Standard BNC coaxial connectors

To connect the TAP-DS3E3 into the network,
refer to Figure 4 below and follow these steps:
IMPORTANT
Do not exceed the maximum length of 122 meters
between end-points.
Figure 4. TAP-DS3E3 simple connectivity diagram
1. Connect a 75Ω coaxial cable from your network
device output (e.g., E3, DS3/T3 or STS-1 network)
to the TAP-DS3E3’s BINBNC port.
2. From the TAP-DS3E3’s AOUTport, connect
a separate coaxial cable to your network
device input. At this point, you should have
a two-way connection established between
the TAP-DS3E3 unit and your network.
3. Next, connect a coaxial cable from your
router’s (or other network device) output
port to the TAP-DS3E3’s A IN port.
4. From the TAP-DS3E3’s B OUT port, connect
a separate cable to your router’s input port.
At this point, you should have a completed
passthrough established between the network
and your router via the TAP-DS3E3 unit.
5. Now, connect a separate cable from the
TAP-DS3E3’s A TAP port to a port on your
Network Analysis Tool interface card.
6. Finally, connect a separate cable from the
other port on your Network Analysis Tool
interface card to the TAP-DS3E3’s B TAP port.
