Installation and Operating Instructions

These instructions should be read in conjunction with your Alarm System
Installation and Operating Manual and the Smoke Alarm instructions, the

should be retained for future reference.
DECLARATION
Friedland hereby declares that this
wirefree Alarm Interface Module is
in compliance with the essential
requirements and other relevant
provisions of the R&TTE directive,
1999/5/EC.
INTRODUCTION
This Interface Module is designed for
use with Friedland Wirefree Intruder
Alarm systems incorporating a
suitable Control Panel and operating
at 433MHz only.
When the connected Smoke Alarm
activates, the Interface Module
provides a link to the alarm system
that will generate an alarm on your
security system.
POSITIONING THE
INTERFACE MODULE AND
SMOKE ALARM
The Smoke Alarm and Interface
Module are suitable for mounting in
dry interior locations only.
The Smoke Alarm must be
positioned according to the
guidelines stated in its instruction
manual.
In addition, the Interface Module
must be mounted within the
specified radio range of 50m to the
Control Panel. Don’t forget to allow
for any obstructions in between that
may reduce this range. Take care
not to position the device directly
onto, behind or very close to
metalwork, as this could affect the
operating range of your system.
Note: If using the interconnect
feature on the smoke alarm then
only one Alarm Interface Module
should be connected to a single
Smoke Alarm only.

CONFIGURING THE
INTERFACE MODULE AND
SMOKE ALARM
Configuration
Switches
Configuring the Interface
Module:
1)Remove the rear cover by
inserting a small coin between
the front and back covers and
gently twisting.
The procedures described in this
section should be undertaken
on a table to ensure that the
Interface Module and Smoke
A
larm are correctly setup and
operating before fixing the devices
in position on the ceiling.
Inside the Interface Module are
two jumper links and a series of
twelve 3-position switches.
These are used to configure the
device for use with the Smoke
Alarm and your alarm system.
2)Jumper link S1 must be
connected across pins marked
“G” and “C”.

in position across the pins.
4) Set switches 1-8 to the same
alarm system house code as
configured into all other alarm
system devices.

For example; an alarm system

have the DIP switches in a
Remote Control set as shown.
The corresponding settings of
the house code DIP switches
(1-8) in the Interface Module
would be as follows:
5) Switches 9, 10, 11 and 12
configure the interface to operate
with a Smoke Alarm and SA3,
SA4 or SA5 type alarm system.
They must be set as follows:

6) Insert the two coin cell batteries
into the interface under the
battery clip ensuring that the +
terminals face upwards.
The indicator LED will illuminate
for approximately 1 s.
Testing the Interface Module:
7) Place the alarm system Control
Panel into Test Mode and select
Walk Test or Detector Test as
appropriate to your system
(refer to the Testing section of
your alarm Installation and
Operating Manual).
8) Press the TAMPER switch on
the Interface Module
– The indicator LED will illuminate for
approx 1 s to show a signal has
been transmitted.
– The Control Panel should beep
and indicate a TAMPER signal
on the LEDs or Display.
If the Control Panel does not
respond correctly remove the
batteries and recheck steps 2 to
10 before proceeding.

Connecting the Interface
Module to the Smoke Alarm:
9) Connect the pre-fitted cable
from the Interface Module to
the terminals on the back of the
smoke alarm as follows:
– Connect the marked wire from
the + terminal of the Interface
Module to the terminal
marked ‘1’ on the back of the
Smoke Alarm.
– Connect the unmarked wire
from the - terminal of the
Interface Module to the
terminal marked ‘2’ on the
back of the Smoke Alarm.
10) Open the Smoke Alarm, connect
the battery to the battery clip
and fit the battery into the
battery holder.
Testing the Smoke Alarm:
11) Press and hold down the test
button on Smoke Alarm.
– The Smoke Alarm siren should
activate.
12) The Interface Module will be
triggered immediately after the
smoke alarm starts sounding
– The indicator LED on the
Interface Module should
illuminate for approximately
1 second to show a signal
has been transmitted.
– The Control Panel should
beep and indicate a FIRE
signal on the LEDs or Display.
If the Smoke Alarm and
Control Panel does not
respond correctly remove the
batteries and recheck steps
2 to 10 before proceeding.
Note: After the Smoke Alarm
stops sounding the Interface
Module requires a 3s period
to reset before it can be
retriggered again.

INSTALLING THE
INTERFACE MODULE AND
SMOKE ALARM
The Interface Module is mounted
inside the Smoke Alarm mounting
base.
1) Using the base as a template,
mark the position of the two
fixing holes on the ceiling.
2) Drill two 5mm holes and fit the
wall plugs.
3) Fix the base to the ceiling with
the screws supplied. Do not over-
tighten the fixing screws.
4) Fit the Interface Module to its
rear cover and snap together.
Ensure that the connection
cable is correctly located in the
cable entry recess and is not
trapped between the front and
rear cover.
5) Fix the Interface Module into
the mounting base in the
position shown below using the
adhesive pads supplied.
Important: Ensure that the
release slot is not positioned
against the side wall of the
base.

6) Fix the Smoke Alarm onto the
base using the screws
supplied. Do not over-tighten
the fixing screws.
Ensure the cable connecting
the Interface to the Smoke
Alarm is not damaged and that
the connections are still secure.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
When the Smoke alarm activates the
Interface Module will be triggered
and a “Fire” signal will then be sent
to the alarm system which will
trigger an alarm, (provided the alarm
is not in test or Program Modes).
The security alarm will continue until
the programmed alarm duration
expires, when it will automatically
reset. Alternatively the security siren
may be stopped early by disarming
the alarm system.
Note: If the cover is removed from
Interface Module a TAMPER alarm
will be generated on the alarm
system.
TESTING
You should test your Smoke Alarm
and the Interface Module every
week.
Important: You should now
test your smoke alarm and
Interface Module to ensure it
is operating correctly with
the security alarm. 1) To avoid triggering an alarm,
first place the alarm system
into Test Mode and select
Walk Test or Detector Test as
appropriate to your system,
(Refer to the Testing section of
your alarm Installation and
Operating Manual).
Remember to put the alarm
system back into Standby after
the test.

2) Press and hold down the test
button on Smoke Alarm.
The Smoke Alarm siren
should activate.
3) The Interface Module should be
triggered immediately after the
smoke alarm starts sounding.
– The indicator LED on the
Interface should illuminate for
approximately 1 second to
show a signal has been sent to
the alarm Control Panel.
– The Control Panel should beep
and indicate a FIRE signal
on the LEDs or Display.
Note: After the Smoke Alarm stops
sounding the Interface Module
requires a 3s period to reset before
it can be retriggered again.
MAINTENANCE
The batteries in the Interface
Module should be changed after
1 year or as soon as the Low
Battery signal operates.
The Interface Module may be
cleaned using a soft damp cloth.
Do not use abrasive, solvent based
or aerosol cleaners. Do not attempt
to clean inside the unit or allow
water to enter the unit.
BATTERIES
Under normal operating conditions
the batteries in the Interface Module
will last approximately 1 year. A
built in battery monitoring facility
will indicate when the batteries
require replacing.
The low battery warning for the
Interface Module is...
a) The Indicator LED on the
Interface Module will flash
continuously.
b) A “Magnetic Contact Detector -
Low Battery” signal will be
indicated on Control Panel.
Important: Remember to put
the alarm system back into
Standby after the test. When a low battery condition is
indicated the batteries should be
replaced as soon as possible with
two new batteries of the following
specification:

TROUBLE SHOOTING
Smoke Alarm activates but Control
Panel does not respond:
1) Interface Module batteries
missing or low - replace with
new batteries and test.
2) Interface Module batteries
incorrectly fitted – refit batteries
with correct polarity and test.
3) Incorrect house code DIP
switch settings, (DIP 1-8).
4) DIP switches 9 and 10
incorrectly set – set DIP 9 to +
and DIP 10 to 0 positions.
6) Jumper Link S1 incorrectly set
– ensure link is fitted across pins
“G” and “C”.
7) Jumper Link S2 missing – refit
link.
8) Interface Module not properly
connected to Smoke Alarm
– check for correct wiring
connection and ensure wires
are not damaged or broken.
9) Control Panel not within range
of Smoke Alarm & Interface
Module – reposition within
range.
10) Metal barrier between
Control Panel and Interface
Module
– Do not mount Interface Module
on any metallic object
– Do not put metallic objects
between the Interface Module
and Control Panel.
5) DIP switches 11 and 12
incorrectly set – set DIP 11 and 12
to 0 position.

Note: Before removing the cover of
the Interface Module first put the
alarm Control Panel into Test
Mode to avoid triggering an
alarm. Remember to return the
alarm to Standby after replacing the
batteries.

Do not dispose of with
your normal household
waste.
DISPOSAL
At the end of their useful life the
packaging, batteries and product
should be disposed of via a suitable
Recycling Centre. DO NOT BURN.
GUARANTEE
Friedland undertakes to replace or repair at its discretion goods
(excluding batteries) should they become defective within 2 years solely
as a result of faulty materials and workmanship. Understandably if the
product has not been installed, operated or maintained in accordance
with these instructions, has not been used appropriately or if any
attempt has been made to rectify, dismantle or alter the product in any
way the guarantee will be invalidated.
The guarantee states entire liability. It does not extend to cover
consequential loss or damage or installation costs arising from the
defective product. This guarantee does not in any way affect the
statutory or other rights of a consumer.
If an item develops a fault, the product must be returned to the point
of sale with;
1) Proof of purchase.
2) A full description of the fault.
3) All relevant batteries (disconnected).
