1 Introduction
The PRIMERGY H250 server is an Intel-based server for mid-size and large
companies. The server is suitable for use as a file server as well as an appli-
cation, information, or internet server. It can be used as a floorstand model as
well as a rack model. The floorstand model can be converted to a rack model
with an optionally available conversion kit.
The H250 server offers a high level of reliability and availability through highly
developed hardware and software components. These include hot-swappable
hard disk drive modules, hot-plug fans, hot-plug power supply units, the
ServerView server management software, Prefailure Detection and Analysing
(PDA) and Automatic Server Reconfiguration and Restart (ASR&R). In addition,
the remote service functionality is made available by the onboard service
processor.
Security functions in the BIOS Setup and on the system board protect the data
on the server against manipulation. The door of the floorstand model can be
monitored centrally. As a rack model, the lockable front door of the rack offers
additional security.
This operating manual tells you how to put your server into operation, how to
operate it in daily use, and how to expand your server.
IWork steps which are the same for the floorstand and rack models are
described only for the floorstand model.

Features Introduction
1.1 Features
System Board
The features of the system board can be found in the technical manual of the
system board for the hardware and in the BIOS Setup for the firmware (see
“Related publications” on page 85).
The HDD Subsystem
SCSI hard disk drives are exclusively installed in the H250 servers. The HDD
subsystem can accommodate up to 12 hard disk drive modules and up to two
SCSI backplanes.
Each hard disk drive module can accommodate a SCSI hard disk drive with an
SCA (Single Connector Attachment) interface and a maximum height of 1 inch.
The module is connected to the SCSI backplane without cables via the SCA
interface. This allows hard disk drives to be simply plugged in or pulled out.
The HDD subsystem is designed for Ultra-3-SCSI. The hard disk drives can be
controlled by the onboard controller (default) or by a RAID controller. If the
server is equipped with a RAID controller, defective hard disk drives can also be
replaced during operation (hot swap). For details, please see section
“Replacement of the HDD Module During Operation” on page 75.
Accessible Drives
The H250 is equipped with a floppy disk drive and a CD-ROM/DVD drive. Two
additionally drives (e. g. tape drives for saving data) can be installed (optional).

Power Supply
Only in its basic configuration level the server has a fixed power supply unit.
Corresponding to the system configuration a second or a third hot plug power
supply unit can be added to achieve redundant power supply. In a redundant
configuration, if one power supply unit fails, the other power supply units
ensures unimpaired continued operation. The defective power supply unit can
be replaced during operation (hot-plug power supply units).

High Level of Availability and Reliability
When accessing stored data, 1-bit-errors in the main memory are automatically
recognized and corrected (EDC = Error Detection and Correction). The
patented memory scrubbing function regularly starts up the EDC mechanism
and thus ensures continuous data integrity.
ASR&R (Automatic Server Reconfiguration and Restart) tunes out defective
system components during an automatic system reboot.
The Prefailure Detection and Analyzing Technology (PDA) from Fujitsu
Siemens reports the threat of system errors or problems to the administrator so
that preventative measures can be taken.
The optional RAID controller supports RAID levels 0, 1 and 5 and increase
system availability.
The hot-swappable hard disk drives provide additional protection.
Server Management
Server management is implemented with the aid of the supplied ServerView
software and the PDA technology. PDA analyzes and monitors all components
that are vital for the system's reliability, thus enabling early detection of overload
situations and appropriate counter-measures.
ServerView enables the management of all PRIMERGY servers in the network
via a central console. Here ServerView supports the following functions:
●Temperature monitoring of the CPU and the surrounding area
●Timer-controlled switch-on (Timer)
●Remote switch-on (Ring Indicator) or WOL (Wake On LAN)
●Watchdog timer for Automatic Server Reconfiguration and Restart (ASR&R)
in the event of failure of memory modules or processors
●Pager message when rebooting system following an error
●Monitoring of PCI bus loading
●End-of-Life monitoring of the fans with timely notification before a failure
●Watchdog timer for operating system monitoring and application monitoring
●Detailed status and error reports for bus systems, processors and main
memory

ServerStart
You can configure the PRIMERGY server quickly and precisely with the Server-
Start software provided. User-guided menus are available for installing the
server operating systems.
Service and Support
PRIMERGY server are service-friendly and modular, thus enabling quick and
simple maintenance. The flash EPROM programme supplied with the Fujitsu
Siemens utilities supports fast BIOS update. The optional RemoteView Remote
Test and Diagnosis System allows the PRIMERGY H250 to be maintained from
remote locations.

The operating instructions are intended for the person responsible for installing
the hardware and correctly operating the system. The manual contains all the
information required for installing and operating your PRIMERGY H250.
To understand the different expansion options it is necessary to have a
knowledge of hardware and data transmission, as well as basic knowledge of
the operating system used. You should also have a good working knowledge of
the English language.

2.1 Notes on Safety
IYou will also find the following safety instructions in the manual entitled
“Safety, Warranty and Ergonomics“ which also includes other notes on
guarantee and ergonomics.
This device complies with the relevant safety regulations for data processing
equipment, including electronic office machines for use in an office
environment.
If you have any questions, contact your sales outlet or our customer service
centre.
VCAUTION!
Equipment repairs should only be performed by qualified staff. Any
failure to observe the guidelines in this manual could expose the user to
risks (electric shock, fire hazards) and could also damage the
equipment. Note that any unauthorized opening of the device will result
in the invalidation of the warranty and exclusion from all liability.
Before Setting Up
VCAUTION!
●During installation and before operating the device, observe the
instructions on environmental conditions for you device in the section
(see “Environmental Conditions” on page 6).
●If the device is brought in from a cold environment, condensation may
form both inside and on the outside of the machine. Before operating
the device, wait until it is absolutely dry and has reached approxi-
mately the same temperature as the installation site. Failure to
observe these guidelines can lead to material damage of the device.

Installation and Operation
VCAUTION!
●The server automatically adjusts to a mains voltage between 100 V
to 240 V. Make sure that the local line voltage does not fall below or
exceed this range.
●This device has a safety tested power cable and must only be
connected to a properly grounded power socket.
●Ensure that the power socket on the device or the grounded mains
outlet is freely accessible.
●The power switch does not disconnect the device from the mains
voltage. To completely disconnect it from the mains voltage, remove
the power plug from the power socket.
●Always connect the device and the attached peripherals to the same
power circuit. Otherwise you run the risk of losing data if, for example,
the central processing unit is still running but the peripheral device
(e.g. storage subsystem) has failed during a power outage.
●Route the cables in such a way that they do not form a potential
hazard (make sure no-one can trip over them) and that they cannot
be damaged. Refer to the relevant notes in the operating manual
when connecting the device.
●No data transmission cable should be connected or disconnected
during a thunderstorm (lightning hazard).
●Please ensure that no objects (e.g. necklaces, paperclips, etc.) or
liquids can get into the interior of the device (this may cause an
electric shock or short circuit).
●In emergencies (e.g. damaged casing, elements, or cables,
penetration of liquids or foreign matter), switch off the device immedi-
ately, remove the power connector from the grounded power socket,
and contact your customer service centre.

Proper Operation of the System, Warranty
VCAUTION!
●Proper operation of the system (in accordance with IEC 60950/DIN
EN 60950) is only ensured if the casing is completely assembled and
the rear covers for the installation openings have been put in place
(electric shock, cooling, fire protection, interference suppression).
●Before opening the device, first switch it off and then disconnect the
power plug.
When opening the device, observe the instructions in this operating
manual or in the technical manual for your device.
Install only system expansions that satisfy the requirements and rules
governing safety and electromagnetic compatibility and relating to
telecommunications terminal equipment. If you install other expan-
sions, you may damage the system or violate the safety regulations
and regulations governing RFI suppression. Information on which
system expansions are suitable can be obtained from the customer
service centre or your sales outlet.
The components marked with a warning label (e.g. lightning symbol)
may only be opened, removed, or exchanged by authorized, qualified
personnel.
●The warranty is invalidated if the device is damaged during the instal-
lation or replacement of system expansions.
●You may set only those resolutions and refresh rates specified in the
“Technical data” section of the monitor description. Otherwise, you
may damage your monitor. If you are in any doubt, contact your sales
outlet or customer service centre.

Batteries
VCAUTION!
●Incorrect replacement of the device's battery may lead to a risk of
explosion. The battery may only be replaced with an identical battery
or with a type recommended by the manufacturer (see the technical
manual for the system board and “Related publications” on page 85).
●Do not throw batteries into the trashcan. They must be disposed of in
accordance with local regulations concerning special waste.
●All batteries containing pollutants are marked with a symbol (a
crossed-out garbage can).
In addition, the marking is provided with the chemical symbol of the
heavy metal decisive for the classification as a pollutant:

●Data cables for peripherals must be adequately shielded to avoid
interference.
Note on the Laser
The CD-ROM drive contains a laser diode classified according to IEC 825-
1:1993:LASER CLASS 1.

Modules with Electrostatic Sensitive Devices:
Components with electrostatic-sensitive devices (ESD) may be identified by the
following sticker:

When you handle components fitted with ESDs, you must observe the following
points under all circumstances:
●You must always discharge static build up (e.g. by touching a grounded
object) before working.
●The equipment and tools you use must be free of static charge.
●Remove the power plug from the power socket before inserting or removing
components containing ESDs.
●Always hold components with ESDs by their edges.
●Do not touch any exposed pins or conductors on a component.
●Use a grounding cable designed for this purpose to connect yourself to the
system unit as you install components.
●Place all components on a static-safe base.
