2. Description
2.1 Use o the tool as directed
The ST 1800 is a han -hel , electric mains-powere tool
for riving screws use to fasten sheet metal in metal
construction applications.
It is use to rive or remove the recommen e metal
construction screws in the applicable materials.
The working environment may be a construction site of
any kin where metal construction work is taking place.
Use of a screw magazine is possible an provision has
been ma e for this (SDT 25).
Only the specifie screw riving bits, magazine an acces-
sories may be use with the tool. The general safety pre-
cautions liste in the operating instructions must be
observe .
The tool is inten e for professional use.
The tool may be operate , service an repaire only by
authorize , traine personnel. This personnel must be
informe of any special hazar s that may be encoun-
tere .

5. Sa ety rules
5.1 General sa ety rules
-WARNING- Read all instructions! Failure to follow
all instructions listed below may result in electric shock,
fire and/or serious injury. The term "power tool" in all
of the warnings listed below refers to your mains oper-
ated (corded power tool or battery operated (cord-
less power tool.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
5.1.1 Work area
a) Keep the work area clean and well lit. Cluttered
and dark areas invite accidents.
b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmos-
pheres, such as in the presence o lammable liq-
uids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks
which may ignite the dust or fumes.
c) Keep children and bystanders away while operat-
ing a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose
control.
5.1.2 Electrical sa ety
a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never
modi y the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter
plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmod-
ified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of
electric shock.
b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded sur-
aces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and re rig-
erators. There is an increased risk of electric shock
if your body is earthed or grounded.
c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet condi-
tions. Water entering a power tool will increase the
risk of electric shock.
) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord or car-
rying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep
cord away rom heat, oil, sharp edges or moving
parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the
risk of electric shock.
e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an
extension cord approved or outdoor use. Use of
a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of
electric shock.
5.1.3 Personal sa ety
a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use com-
mon sense when operating a power tool. Do not
use a power tool while you are tired or under the
in luence o drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment
of inattention while operating power tools may result
in serious personal injury.
b) Use sa ety equipment. Always wear eye protec-
tion. Safety equipment such as dust mask, non-
skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection
used for appropriate conditions will reduce per-
sonal injuries.
c) Avoid accidental starting. Ensure the switch is in
the o position be ore plugging in. Carrying pow-
er tools with your finger on the switch or plugging
in power tools that have the switch on invites acci-
dents.
) Remove any adjusting key or wrench be ore turn-
ing the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached
to a rotating part of the power tool may result in
personal injury.
e) Do not overreach. Keep proper ooting and bal-
ance at all times. This enables better control of the
power tool in unexpected situations.
f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jew-
ellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away
rom moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long
hair can be caught in moving parts.
g) I devices are provided or the connection o dust
extraction and collection acilities, ensure these
are connected and properly used. Use of these
devices can reduce dust related hazards.
5.1.4 Power tool use and care
a) Do not orce the power tool. Use the correct pow-
er tool or your application. The correct power tool
will do the job better and safer at the rate for which
it was designed.
b) Do not use the power tool i the switch does not
turn it on and o . Any power tool that cannot be
controlled with the switch is dangerous and must
be repaired.
c) Disconnect the plug rom the power source be ore
making any adjustments, changing accessories,
or storing power tools. Such preventive safety mea-
sures reduce the risk of starting the power tool acci-
dentally.
) Store idle power tools out o the reach o children
and do not allow persons un amiliar with the pow-
er tool or these instructions to operate the power
tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of
untrained users.
e) Maintain power tools. Check or misalignment or
binding o moving parts, breakage o parts and
any other condition that may a ect the power tool's
operation. I damaged, have the power tool repaired
be ore use. Many accidents are caused by poorly
maintained power tools.
f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly main-
tained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less
likely to bind and are easier to control.
g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc.,
in accordance with these instructions and in the
manner intended or the particular type o power
tool, taking into account the working conditions
and the work to be per ormed. Use of the power
tool for operations different from those intended
could result in a hazardous situation.

5.1.5 Service
a) Have your power tool serviced by a quali ied repair
person using only genuine replacement parts. This
will ensure that the safety of the power tool is main-
tained.
5.2 Additional sa ety precautions
5.2.1 Personal sa ety
a) Wear ear protection. Excessive noise may lead to
a loss of hearing.
b)To avoid tripping and alling when working, always
lead the sypply cord, extension cord and dust extrac-
tion hose away tho the rear.
c)Always hold the tool with both hands on the grips
provided.
)Avoid contact with rotating parts.
e)Check that the sca old hook and belt hook are
securely attached.
f) The tool is not intended or use by children, by
debilitated persons or those who have received no
instruction or training.
g) Children must be instructed not to play with the
tool.
h) Dust from material such as paint containing lead,
some wood species, minerals and metal may be
harmful. Contact with or inhalation of the dust may
cause allergic reactions and/or respiratory diseases
to the operator or bystanders. Certain kinds of dust
are classified as carcinogenic such as oak and beech
dust especially in conjunction with additives for
wood conditioning (chromate, wood preservative .
Material containing asbestos must only be treated
by specialists. Where the use o a dust extraction
device is possible it shall be used. To achieve a
high level o dust collection, use a suitable vacu-
um cleaner o the type recommended by Hilti or
wood dust and/or mineral dust together with this
tool. Ensure that the workplace is well ventilated.
The use o a dust mask o ilter class P2 is rec-
ommended. Follow national requirements or the
materials you want to work with.
5.2.2 Power tool use and care
a) Secure the workpiece. Use clamps or a vice to hold
the workpiece in place. The workpiece is thus held
more securely than by hand and both hands remain
free to operate the tool.
b) Ensure that the insert tools used are equipped with
the appropriate connection end system and that
they are properly itted and secured in the chuck.
c) In the event o a power aillure, switch the tool o
and unplug the supply cord. This prevents inad-
vertent starting when the power returns.
) Hold tool by insulated gripping sur aces when per-
orming an operation where the cutting tool may
contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Contact with
a “live” wire will make exposed metal parts of the
tool “live” and shock the operator.
5.2.3 Electrical sa ety
a) Be ore beginning work, check the working area (e.g.
with a metal detector) to ensure that no concealed
electric cables or gas and water pipes are present.
External metal parts of the tool may become live if,
for example, an electric cable is damaged inadvertenly.
This presents a serious risk of electric shock.
b) Check the condition o the supply cord and its plug
connections and have it replaced by a quali ied
electrician i damage is ound. Check the condi-
tion o the extension cord and replace it i dam-
age is ound.
Do not touch the supply in the event o it su ering
damage while working. Disconnect the supply cord
plug rom the socket. Damaged supply cords and
extension cords present a risk of electric shock.
c) Dirty or dusty electric tools should thus be checked
at a Hilti service center at regular intervals, espe-
cially i used requently or working on conductive
materials. Dust (especially ust from con uctive
materials) or ampness a hering to the surface of
the tool may, un er unfavorable con itions, present
a risk of electric shock.
5.2.4 Work area
a) Ensure that the workplace is well lit.
b) Ensure that the workplace is well ventilated.Poor-
ly ventilated workplaces may be injurious to the
health due to exposeure to dust.
5.2.5 Personal protective equipment
The operator an other persons in the imme iate vicinity
must always wear eye protection an ear protection
while the tool is in use.

6. Be ore use
-NOTE-
The electric supply voltage must comply with
the information given on the rating plate.
6.1 Fitting the sca old hook
1. Unplug the supply cor from the electric socket.
2. Sli e the scaffol hook over the tool from the front.
3. Rotate the scaffol hook into the esire position.
4. Secure the scaffol hook by tightening the knurle
screw.
-CAUTION-
Check that the scaffol hook is attache securely to the
tool.
6.2 Removing the protective sleeve
1. Unplug the supply cor from the electric socket.
2. Insert the tip of a screw river in the gap between the
tool an the protective sleeve. Pry the protective sleeve
away from the tool by turning the screw river.
3. Pull the protective sleeve off towar the front en of
the tool.
6.3 Use o a generator or trans ormer
This tool can be powere by a generator or by way of a
transformer connecte to the construction site electric
supply when the following con itions an specifications
are fulfille :
– Alternating current, power output at least 2600 W.
– The operating voltage must remain within +5% an –
15% of the rate voltage at all times.
– Permissible frequency: 50–60 Hz; never above 65 Hz.
– The equipment must be fitte with an automatic volt-
age regulator with starting compensation.
Never operate other tools or appliances from the
generator or transformer at the same time. Switching
other tools or appliances off an on can result in su en
overvoltage or un ervoltage which may cause amage
to the tool.
7. Operation
Use clamps or a vice to secure the workpie-
ce. The workpiece is thus hel more secure-
ly than by han an both han s remain free
to operate the tool.
7.1 Setting orward / reverse rotation
The forwar / reverse selector pushbutton can be use
to select the esire irection of rotation. An interlock
prevents operation of the pushbutton while the motor
is running.
– Pushbutton move to the right (as seen with tool in
working position) = forwar s rotation.
– Pushbutton move to the left (as seen with tool in
working position) = reverse rotation.

cause the material to splinter.

7.2 Torque adjustment
1. Turn the torque a justing ring to the esire torque
setting (positions 1–18, see section 2.2 for infor-
mation on applications an screw types).
7.3 Switching on / o
1. Plug the supply cor into the electric socket.
2. Press the control switch slowly. The spee of the
tool can thus be varie between 0 an maximum
spee .
7.4 Lockbutton or sustained operation
Use of the lockbutton permits sustaine operation
(motor running constantly) without nee to maintain
pressure on the control switch.
7.4.1 Switching on in sustained operating mode
1. Press the control switch as far as it will go.
2. Press the lockbutton while maintaining pressure on
the control switch an then release the control switch.
7.4.2 Switching o when running in sustained mode
1. Press the control switch. The lockbutton returns to
its original position.

7.5 Fitting the depth gauge
1. Unplug the supply cor from the electric socket.
2. Insert the tip of a screw river in the gap between the
tool an the protective sleeve. Pry the protective sleeve
away from the tool by turning the screw river.
3. Pull the protective sleeve off towar the front en of
the tool.
4. Push the epth gauge onto the tool from the front.
7.6 Depth gauge adjustment
The epth gauge is use when riving screws with sealing
washers.
Use a epth gauge suitable for the applicable sealing
washer iameter (accessory).
The epth gauge can be a juste to ensure correct com-
pression of the sealing washer un er the hea of the
screw.
7.6.1 Adjusting the depth gauge
To decrease compression o sealing washer
1. Turn the epth gauge to the right (II).
To increase compression o sealing washer
1. Turn the epth gauge to the left. Compression of the
screw seal is increase (± 0.25 mm per click stop)
(III).
7.7 Removing the depth gauge
1. Pull the epth gauge off the tool towar the front.
7.8 Changing bits
The chuck is equippe with a 1/4″hexagon socket. This
size is stan ar ize (DIN 3126/ ISO 1173).
1. Pull the epth gauge off the tool towar the front.
2. Pull the sleeve to the rear an hol it in this position.
3. The bit can then be pulle out or a ifferent bit inserte .
4. Release the sleeve an allow it to return to its origi-
nal position.
5. Refit the epth gauge to the tool.
7.9 Removing a previously driven screw
1. Pull the epth gauge off the tool towar the front.
2. Bring the forwar / reverse pushbutton into the "reverse”
position.
3. The tool can now be use to remove the screw.
8. Care and maintenance
Unplug the supply cor from the mains socket.
8.1 Care o insert tools
Clean off irt an ust eposits an protect your insert
tools from corrosion by wiping them from time to time
with an oil-soake rag.
8.2 Care o the electric tool
-CAUTION-
Keep the power tool, especially its grip sur aces,
clean and ree rom oil and grease. Do not use clean-
ing agents which contain silicone.
The outer casing of the tool is ma e from impactre-
sistant plastic. Sections of the grip are ma e from a
synthetic rubber material. Never operate the tool when
the ventilation slots are blocke . Clean the ventilation
slots carefully using a ry brush. Do not permit for-
eign objects to enter the interior of the tool. Clean the
outsi e of the tool at regular intervals with a slightly
amp cloth. Do not use a spray, steam pressure clean-
ing equipment or running water for cleaning. This may
negatively affect the electrical safety of the tool.
8.3 Maintenance
Check all external parts of the tool for amage at reg-
ular intervals an check that all controls operate fault-
lessly. Do not operate the tool if parts are amage or
when the controls o not function faultlessly. If nec-
essary, your electric tool shoul be repaire at a Hilti
repair center.
Repairs to the electrical section of the tool may be car-
rie out only by traine electrical specialists
8.4 Checks a ter care and maintenance
Check that the tool functions correctly ( rive an remove
a screw) after carrying out care an maintenance.

tem is maintaine . This means that only original Hilti
consumables, components an spare parts may be
use in the tool.
This warranty provi es the free-of-charge repair or
replacement of efective parts only over the entire lifes-
pan of the tool. Parts requiring repair or replacement
as a result of normal wear an tear are not covere by
this warranty.
Additional claims are excluded, unless stringent
national rules prohibit such exclusion. In particular,
Hilti is not obligated or direct, indirect, incidental
or consequential damages, losses or expenses in
connection with, or by reason o , the use o , or inabil-
ity to use the tool or any purpose. Implied warranties
o merchantability or itness or a particular purpose
are speci ically excluded.
