APPROVALS
FS7-130-SX and SX2 Controllers are manufactured in compliance with the requirements of the ISO-
9001 standard and are approved by:

SECTION 1:INTRODUCTION
1.1 System Overview
The FS System 7 Digital Fire Detection System with FS7-130-SX Controllers uses one or more
FS7-2173 Electro-Optical Fire Detectors (the SX2 requires at least two detectors to support
voting protocol) with factory installed Tefloncables and with Teflon sleeve for double
protection against acids. For most applications, the FS7-2173TM Detector cabling incorporates
a high reliability male self-locking circular 3/8 inch diameter connector to interface with a JB-4
Junction Box. For connecting the Detectors to the FS7-130-SX Controller, special FS7
interconnecting cables are used. The components “plug-in” to each other with self-locking
connectors, which virtually eliminate wiring problems and greatly simplify installation, testing,
and replacement of FS System 7 components.
FSC’s two stage ALERT-1/ALARM-2 Detector fire response is designed for typical
semiconductor clean room fabrication facilities, including chemical wet benches. The FS7-130-
SX2 controller enforces a detector voting regimen as outlined below.
1.1.1 Fire Response Stage 1 - ALERT
This first stage response level is used to signal external audible and visual
annunciators and the Detector records an event in the FirePic when the ALERT fire
level is reached. At this time, a manufacturing batch process can be completed if
desired and an investigation of a fire threat initiated. The FS7-130-SX & SX2
controllers enter the ALERT state whenever any of the following situations occur:
•Any detector in the system signals an ALERT condition
•Any detector in the system signals an ALARM condition
When the controller is in ALERT, the master alert relay is energized.
1.1.2 Fire Response Stage 2 - ALARM
This second stage response level is used to signal a suppression release and signal
wet bench electrical power shut down if the fire did not self-extinguish and grew to
the second ALARM level. An event in the FirePic is also recorded at this level.
Up to four distinct detection zones may be established. The FS7-130-SX controller
asserts the ALARM state for a particular zone whenever ONE or more detectors in
the zone signal an ALARM condition. The FS7-130-SX2 controller asserts the
ALARM state for a particular zone whenever TWO or more detectors in the zone
signal an ALARM condition.
When the controller is in ALARM, the alarm relay for the appropriate zone is
energized. The master alert relay will be activated as well.

1.1.3 FirePic FirePic’s digital spectral data provides information facilitating the analysis of the
probable cause of the fire. This data can be used to prevent a subsequent,
potentially damaging fire from occurring. FSC’s proprietary FirePic stores the pre-
fire and actual Detector sensor spectral data of the last 6 fire events in the
Detector’s non-volatile digital memory for analysis. FirePicTM provides the
numerical spectral evidence to determine the cause of the fire. The FirePic records
the time and date for each fire event. The FirePic data includes graphical display of
the relative spectral intensities versus time preceding and during the fire.
Note: To access FirePic, a PC computer with FSC SX Software is required.
1.2 FS7-2173 Electro-Optical Fire Detector
The FS7-2173 Electro-Optical Fire Detector, with its Wide Band spectral sensor array, is
designed to see all types of hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon fires. The FS7-2173 Fire
Detector incorporates a multi-spectral sensor array consisting of Wide Band IR TM, Near Band
IR TM, and Visible Band sensors. The Detector features a 120-degree conical Field-of-View.
The internal microcomputer with signal processing algorithms continuously monitors the
Detector’s circuitry and verifies proper operation. When a Detector declares an ALERT or
ALARM, it communicates with the Controller through the FireBusIITM.
The FS7-2173 Detector’s LED blinks ON every 10 seconds to indicate POWER ON, rapidly
blinks for ALERT and lights up continuously when ALARM is declared. The FS7-2173 Detector
communicates to the Controller via the 4-wire FireBusII RS-485 interface.
The FS7-2173 Detector electro-optics electronics printed circuit board is housed in a
polypropylene leak-proof acid-resistant enclosure.
1.3 FS7-130-SX / -SX2 Controller
The Model FS7-130-SX / -SX2 Controller is designed for installation into fire control cabinets.
The Controller has 6 built-in SPST relays for interfacing to UL/FM Approved Fire Alarm Panels
for up to 4 Zones of ALARM / ALERT, one master ALERT and one Fault relay.
A maximum of twelve 12 FS7-2173 Detectors can be connected to each Controller with up to 4
Zone assignments. If any Detector is removed, disabled, or fails, the Model FS7-130-SX or
SX2 Controller issues a Fault Status and displays it with a built-in Fault LED.
The FS7 Controller's integral computer directs the overall operation and performs the following:
•Provides 12 VDC electrical power for each FS7-2173 Detector.
•Communicates with the Detectors via the digital RS-485 based FireBusII
•Communicates data externally through RS-232 communication channel for system set-up
and diagnostics with FirePic using a PC Computer and SX Software
•Stores Event History Tables, which contain the time and date stamped ALERT, ALARM,
and Fault histories in non-volatile digital memory.
•Color LED’s Display the System Status of: Green - POWER ON (Normal Operation),
Yellow-COMM (communication / improper wiring or loose connections)Fault, Yellow -
SYSTEM Fault and 4 Red - ALERT (blinking) / ALARM (steady on) for each Zone.
•Activates Alarm Zone relays during ALARM condition.
•Activates Master Alert relay during ALERT condition.

1.3.1 Controller Outputs
There are five 24 VDC, 1 A Fire Signal Output Relays in the Controller for
interfacing with external equipment, such as a Fire Control Panel.
1.3.2 Master ALERT Signal Relay
During Normal Operation, the Master ALERT Relay is de-energized with open
contacts. During an ALERT condition, the Master ALERT Relay is energized and
the contacts are closed. The Master ALERT relay will respond to any Detector in an
ALERT, even if the Detector goes immediately to the ALARM level.
1.3.3 Zone Alarm Signal Relays
There are 4 Alarm Zones. The SX Controller requires ONE Detectors per zone to
signal Alarm before the Alarm Relay closes. The SX2 Controller requires TWO
Detectors per zone to signal Alarm before the Alarm Relay closes.
1.3.4 Fault Signal Relay
During Normal Operation, the Fault Relay is energized with closed contacts. There
are two yellow Fault LEDs for indicating possible Fault types.
COMM Fault: Communication Faults caused by improper wiring, loose connections,
damaged connectors, or cables.
SYSTEM Fault: System Faults such as Detector Internal Operational Self Test or
relay coil Fault.
If either of these Faults occurs, the Fault relay will de-energize and the relay
contacts will open. When the Fault is cleared, the relay will energize and the
contacts will close, and the yellow LED will go out.
For more detailed trouble-shooting, the SX Software will indicate the Detector, which
has a Fault condition.
1.3.5 Non-Latching Relay Mode
The controller operates in non-latching mode: it automatically resets the Fire Signal
Relays after 5 seconds if the cause of the condition has been eliminated (for
example, fire self-extinguished).
1.3.6 Controller’s Detector Search
For the Controller to function with a new set of Detectors, during the System initial
power-up or when Detectors are added to the System, a Detector Search must be
performed. This causes the Controller to catalog the On-Line Detectors by serial
numbers. The Detector Search must be initiated by a PC Computer connection to
Controller’s RS-232 port and SX Software. At the end of a Detector Search, the
number of On-Line Detectors will be displayed on the PC screen. This number of
the Detectors must be verified. A complete list of the serial numbers can then be
displayed for verification of the Detectors connected into the System.
1.3.7 Zone Operation
When a Detector Search is performed, all Detectors are assigned to Zone 1. To
change the Zone assignments, the PC Computer RS-232 connection and SX
Software must also be used (see Section 3.2.) Each Detector may be assigned to
any of the four Zones. There is a limit of 12 Detectors for each Zone. The SX2
version requires at least two Detectors per zone to support voting protocol.

1.3.8 FireBusII
All FS7-2173 Detectors are interconnected by the FireBusII. A maximum of 12
Detectors may be attached to any SX Controller and the maximum cable length is
1000 feet. The four-conductor FireBusII supplies the 12 VDC power and RS-485
digital communications to all Detectors. The Controller supervises the FireBusII line.
Improper FireBusII operation is indicated by the Controller Fault LED.
WARNING: The Controller requires 24 VDC. Under NO circumstances
should 120 or 240 VAC be applied to the Controller’s input
power terminals or any other Controller connection
terminals.

1.4 FSC Junction Boxes
FSC Junction Boxes (Part No. JB-4) and cables with self-locking connectors are used for
connecting the FS7-2173 Detectors to the Controller. The FSC self-locking connectors and
Junction Boxes are used to eliminate wiring problems and communication Faults and to assure
the FSC warranty. The Detectors can be “daisy-chained” using the Junction Boxes.
One Junction Box can accommodate two Detectors. The Junction Box at the end of the “daisy-
chain” can handle three Detectors. The Junction Box closest to the Controller is connected to
the Controller using a cable with a male self-locking 3/8-inch diameter connector at one end
(for plugging into the Junction Box) and open leads at the other end for wiring into the terminal
strip on the Controller.

SECTION 2:INSTALLATION
2.1 Wiring Requirements
2.1.1 Power
Warning: Apply ONLY 24 VDC to the Controllers
External Electrical Input Power Connections.
2.1.2 Controller Installation and Wiring
The characteristics of the interconnecting cable for connecting the Detectors to the
Controller must conform to the specifications for RS-485 or RS-232.
2.2 FireBusII and JB-4 Junction Box Installation
1. TO INSTALL THE JUNCTION BOX - use a secure surface for mounting the flanges of the
box. Two screws may be used through the mounting flanges as indicated in the drawing.
2. CONNECT THE DETECTORS - Plug the Detector male cable connector into the
appropriate Junction Box. Line up the red dot on each male and female connector.
2.3 Detector Installation
1. INSTALL THE DETECTOR MOUNTING BRACKET.
a. Select the Detector mounting location. Make sure the fire threat area is located along
the axis of the Detector’s Field-of-View. SX2 installation requires both Detectors be
within 8 ft of the area to be monitored to support the voting protocol.
b. Choose a fastening method, which will secure the detector reliably to the type of
material at the enclosure location. For example, drill custom holes in the mounting
bracket and use screws to attach the mounting bracket. If the mounting surface is
polypropylene, heat weld instead of screw fastening may be used to secure the
mounting bracket.
c. Install the Detector mounting bracket in the selected location.
d. Slide the Detector enclosure onto the mounting bracket until it locks into place.
2. INSTALL CABLE CONNECTOR. If it is not already installed. At this time, the FireBusII
cable should be connected to its Junction Box.
CAUTION: Observe static protection procedures while
handling Detector cables. Wear a grounded wrist
strap.
3. RECORD THE DETECTOR SERIAL NUMBER AND LOCATION. This information will be
useful later along with Controller Zone assignment information after INITIALIZATION.

2.4 Mounting Locations
2.4.1 Mounting FS7-2173 Fire Detectors
The FS7-2173 Fire Detectors have a 120-degree conical Field-of-View (viewing
angle). It is recommended that the Detectors be positioned with the primary fire
threat location aimed in the center of the Detector’s Field-of-View. Since optical Fire
Detectors must “see” the fire in order to detect it, mount the Detectors in locations,
such as corners and ceilings to avoid line-of-sight blockage.
2.4.2 Mounting FS7-130-SX / -SX2 Controllers
The Controllers are designed to be mounted on a flat mounting surface.

SECTION 3:CONTROLLER OPERATION
3.1 FS7-130-SX / -SX2 Controller with FS7-2173 Detectors
The FS7-130-SX Controllers do NOT have an ON/OFF switch. The Controller turns ON when
the external 24 VDC Power is turned on. When the Controller is powered up for the first time,
the FS7-2173 Detector’s Green LED will illuminate briefly and then blink every 10 seconds to
verify operational readiness. The FS7-130-SX Controller’s Green LED blinks ON and OFF
during power up sequence and turns ON continuously during NORMAL Operation.
3.2 Configuring the Controller and Detectors
3.2.1 Using the FSC SX Software
Configuring the FS7-130-SX Controller and Detectors requires using PC computer
with the included FSC SX Software Program. To use the SX Software Program,
refer to “PC Computer User’s Guide” for the SX Software, FSC Document
MNPC001.
3.3 System Operating Modes
3.3.1 POWER ON
In POWER ON Normal Operation, the Controller is ready to detect fires and report
Faults. The Green POWER ON LED is continuously ON and the 2 Yellow Fault and
4 Red Zone LEDs are OFF.
3.3.2 Fault
During a Fault condition:
•Yellow LED blinks ON and OFF for COMM (communication) Faults. The
COMM Fault LED is the first yellow LED closest to the green POWER ON LED.
This LED will blink ON and OFF a group of flashes every 5 seconds. The
number of ON/OFF flashes in the group corresponds to the Zone number of the
COMM Fault. (For example, if the COMM Fault LED blinks ON two times in
succession every 5 seconds, the COMM Fault is with a Detector in Zone 2.) If
the LED stays on continuously, a COMM Fault is in more than one Zone.
•Yellow SYSTEM Fault LED (the second yellow LED closest to the red Zone 1
LED) is continuously ON
•The event is recorded in the Fault Event History file, and
•The Fault relay is de-energized.
Where possible, the Fault condition is self-resetting; i.e. if the action causing the
Fault is remedied, then the Controller will stop reporting a Fault.
If a COMM Fault occurs in a FS System 7, it generally is the result of the following:
•failure in the FireBusII wiring, such as a severed or damaged cable,
•loose terminations at the Controller terminal strip,
•damaged connector.
If a SYSTEM Fault occurs in a FS System 7, it generally is the result of the
following:
•System's internal self-checking reported a hardware failure in one of the
Detectors,
System problem has been encountered such as a broken relay coil.

3.3.3 Detector Test
The Controller automatically performs FS7-2173 Detector self-tests every 10
minutes (factory set) to check the operation of its Detector. While these Detector
self-tests are occurring, the FS System 7 is still functional and able to detect and
alarm to a fire.
3.3.4 Manual Detector Test
Test the system “end-to-end” by activating each Detector separately on the
standard SX system. SX2 system requires at least two Detectors in a voting group
be activated.
Note: Use FSC’s Model FT-S7 or FS-746 Test Lamps to test each Detector
individually.
WARNING: DISABLE RESPONSES TO CONTROLLER
RELAY OUTPUTS TO AVOID ACTIVATING
EXTERNAL ALARMS AND/OR SUPPRESSION
SYSTEMS DURING TESTING.

SECTION 4:MAINTENANCE AND REPLACEMENT
4.1 Personnel
Tests must be performed by qualified authorized personnel observing standard safety
practices.
WARNING: Hazardous voltages may be present during testing procedures.
Serious injury or death may result if personnel fail to observe
safety precautions.
4.2 Controller Faults
For diagnostic purposes, possible Faults reported by the Controller are shown in the following
table. If a Fault is detected, the Controller turns on either the COMM or SYSTEM Yellow Fault
LED. Should remedial action fail to clear a Fault condition, call FSC Technical Support.

The Detector green LED blinks 3 times each 10 seconds. Detector
indicated by the Zone number has failed its internal optical Self-Test. If
this fault persists, the Detector must be returned to the factory for
service.
The Detector green LED blinks 4 times each 10 seconds. This fault
occurs due to leak within Detector housing. Return the Detector to the
factory for service.
DETECTOR Faults not reported to Controller
HIGH
TEMPERATURE
FAULT
The Detector green LED blinks 5 times each 10 seconds. The
specified operating temperature range has been exceeded. The
Detector must be sent to the factory for service.
Suggestion: Periodic Maintenance of protected equipment should
include visual inspection of all detectors.
MEMORY
CORRUPTION
The Detector green LED blinks 6 times each 10 seconds. The Detector
must be sent to factory for service.
Suggestion: Periodic Maintenance of protected equipment should
include visual inspection of all detectors.

4.3 Routine Maintenance and Calibration
4.3.1 FS7-2173 Detector
The Detector has no calibration requirements or field calibration options. It is
recommended to perform the Detector testing according to a periodic schedule.
When operated in a clean room environment, the window viewing area is expected
to remain clean. This should be verified as part of periodic maintenance with a
hand-held tester. If cleaning is required, wipe the viewing area clean with Isopropyl
Alcohol.
4.3.2 FS7-130-SX / -SX2 Controller Module
The Controller has no calibration or periodic maintenance requirements. The
Controller checks its own operation and supervision regularly.
4.4 Detector Faults
Under NORMAL operation, the Detector’s green LED will blink every 10 seconds. If a Detector
Fault condition persists, contact FSC. There are no user-serviceable parts within a Detector.
4.5 Fire Detector and Controller Replacement
4.5.1 FS7-2173 Detector Replacement
1. Disconnect the Detector's male connector from the Junction Box.
2. Make sure there is enough cable slack for removing the Detector.
3. Then carefully slide the Detector off its T-mount bracket.
4. Install a replacement Detector in the inverse order (steps 3, 2, 1).
4.5.2 FS7-130-SX & SX2 Controller Replacement
1. Turn off external power and gently and firmly pull up the removable terminal
plugs for both J1 and J2.
2. Unscrew the Controller mounting screws.
3. Install a replacement Controller in the inverse order (steps 3, 2, 1).
To return a Detector or Controller, make sure it is packed in static protected
material. If unavailable, carefully wrap the Detector or Controller in Aluminum foil.
