Preface
This document provides an explanation of the features and specifications of the ELSA
Synergy II and GLoria II AGP graphics boards. There is also a discussion of the graphics
board’s video memory and video resolutions.

Documentation Conventions
Unless otherwise noted in the text, this guide uses the following symbolic conventions.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Precautions
Electrostatic charges can damage the integrated circuits on printed circuit boards. To
prevent such damage from occurring, observe the following precautions during board
unpacking and installation:
• Stand on a static-free mat.
• Wear a static strap to ensure that any accumulated electrostatic charge is discharged
from your body to ground.
• Create a common ground for the equipment you are working on by connecting the
static-free mat, static strap, and peripheral units to that piece of equipment.
• Keep uninstalled printed circuit boards in their protective antistatic bags.
• Handle printed circuit boards by their edges, once you have removed them from their
protective antistatic bags.
user-supplied values Italic words or characters in syntax and command descriptions
represent values that you must supply. Italics are also used in text
for emphasis.
screen display Information that the system displays, commands that you must use
literally, and path names appear in this typeface.
Enter Key caps are presented with a special keycap font as shown in the
left column. (In this document, we refer to the Enter key. On your
keyboard, the key may be labeled either Enter or Return.)

Introduction
Introduction
This section contains a brief overview of the ELSA Synergy II and GLoria II graphics
cards. This section then provides important safety instructions that you should follow
when handling the ELSA graphics cards.
The ELSA Synergy II Graphics Card
You have the option of selecting an ELSA Synergy II graphics card for your HP VISUALIZE
Personal Workstation. This graphics card fits in the AGP or AGP Pro accessory slot. There
is a total of 32 MB of memory installed on the graphics board which cannot be upgraded.
The Synergy II’s TNT2 graphics processor communicates directly with the Pentium III
processor along the AGP bus.

• High resolution with 1920 by 1200 pixels in True color, at 60 Hz max. refresh
• 2D performance and high-power 3D hardware acceleration
• Supports 16:10 wide-format monitors.

• Standards: VESA Video BIOS, DPMS, DDC2B, Plug & Play.
• Video standards: DirectDraw, ActiveMovie 1.0, DirectShow (ActiveMovie 2.0).
Video Memory
The video memory is a local block of RAM for holding major data structures: Frame Buffer
(double buffer), Z-Buffer and T-Buffer (Texture Buffer). The Frame Buffer holds one frame
steady on the screen while the next one is being processed. The Z-Buffer stores depth
information for each pixel.
The NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 graphics processor dynamically allocates the memory. The
higher the resolution (e.g., 1920 1080)and the deeper the Z-Buffer (32-bit max.), the less
memory is available for texture.
Available Video Resolutions
If the resolution/refresh-rate combination is set higher than the display can support, you
risk damaging the display.
The table below summarizes the 3D video resolutions which are supported.

ELSA GLoria II Graphics Card
You have the option of selecting an ELSA Gloria II graphics card for your HP VISUALIZE
Personal Workstation. This graphics card fits in the AGP or AGP Pro accessory slot. There
is a total of 64 MB of memory installed on the graphics board which cannot be upgraded.
The GLoria II’s Quadro graphics processor communicates directly with the Pentium III
processor along the AGP bus.

GLoria II Video Memory

Introduction
Important Safety Instructions
WARNING If you have any doubt that you can lift the HP VISUALIZE Personal
Workstation or display safely, do not try to move it without help.
For your safety, always connect the equipment to a grounded wall
outlet. Always use a power cord with a properly grounded plug, such
as the one provided with this equipment, or one in compliance with
your national regulations. This HP VISUALIZE Personal Workstation is
disconnected from the power by removing the power cord from the
power outlet. This means the Personal Workstation must be located
close to a power outlet that is easily accessible.
For your safety, NEVER remove the HP VISUALIZE Personal
Workstation’s cover without first removing the power cord from the
power outlet, and any connection to the telecommunications
network. Always replace the cover on the Personal Workstation
before switching it on. The power cord should be the last item to be
re-connected after re-assembly. Failure to follow these instructions
results in the risk of electrical and/or mechanical hazards during the
operation.
To avoid electric shocks, do not open the power supply. There are no
user-serviceable parts inside.
This HP VISUALIZE Personal Workstation is a Class 1 laser product.
Do not attempt to make any adjustment to the laser units.
Before handling the ELSA graphics cards first wait until the card has
cooled down completely before touching it. The card can become
very hot during use.
CAUTION Static electricity can damage electronic components. Therefore, anytime you
handle an accessory such as the ELSA Synergy II or GLoria II card, you
should use an electrostatic grounding strap. You should turn all equipment
OFF. Do not let your clothes touch the accessory. To equalize the static
electricity, rest the antistatic bag on top of the Personal Workstation while
you are removing the accessory from the bag. You should also handle the
accessory as little as possible and with care.

Installing an ELSA Graphics Card
1. Before installing your graphics card, disconnect all power, peripheral, and
telecommunications cables from the Personal Workstation.
WARNING To avoid electrical shock, make sure that you unplug the power cable
from the wall outlet and the Workstation before proceeding.
2. To remove the Personal Workstation’s cover, refer to the User’s Guide that came with
your Personal Workstation. Alternatively, you can print out a copy from any of the
following sources:
• Your hard drive’s preloaded files
• The tools and support CD
• The support website at http://www.hp.com/go/visualizesupport
3. Use a static-grounding strap, attaching it to the bare metal chassis of your Personal
Workstation before handling the ELSA graphics card.
4. Place the Workstation on its side on a flat work surface, such as a table top.
5. Ensure that all cables are correctly routed and flat against the system so that they do
not obstruct the ELSA graphics card.

6. Remove the AGP accessory slot screw from the bulkhead.
7. Remove the bulkhead filler panel from the AGP slot.
NOTE Your Personal Workstation may look different than the one documented here.
8. Grasp the graphics card’s bulkhead and opposite edge and align the card’s contact
fingers with the AGP or AGP Pro connector on the system board. Ensure that the card’s
contact fingers are fully seated in their connectors.

9. Press the ELSA graphics card firmly into place.
10. Replace the bulkhead screw that secures the graphics card to the workstation chassis.

Updating the ELSA Graphics Driver
HP updates the ELSA graphics driver as needed to incorporate feature and performance
enhancements, or to fix problems found when running specific applications.
You can download the latest version of the ELSA graphics driver from HP’s web site:
http://www.hp.com/go/visualizesupport
NOTE A README file is supplied with the driver. Please read it carefully as it
provides instructions to install the driver. Moreover, the information contained
in the README file supersedes any information contained in this manual.
To update the driver, follow these instructions:
1. Create a temporary directory such as C:\TEMP\ELSADRV\
2. Download the driver from HP’s web site to a temporary folder on your hard disk.
3. Run the executable file to decompress the contained files. You can do this by
double-clicking on the file in Windows Explorer.
Follow the instructions provided in the README file that comes with the driver.
Configuring the ELSA Graphics Driver
See the README file that comes with the driver to obtain additional information.
Troubleshooting
The following is a list of known problems:
• On Pentium III systems, your Windows NT 4.0 has to be updated to support the
Pentium III enhancements. This can be done by running the utility which is shipped
with this driver: CheckPentiumIIISupport.exe.
• If you have an OpenGL application running and an OpenGL Screensaver starts, there
may be problems.
• Not all refresh rates are available in very high resolutions. This is expected to be fixed
with one of the next drivers.
• If you have problems playing video AVI-files, install the Intel Indeo 5 driver. This driver
can be found under:

Generating Configuration Reports
The ELSA Synergy II and GLoria II drivers can generate a report of the system and video
configuration. To create this report:
1. Open the Display Properties window (see above) by double clicking on the Display icon
in the Control Panel.
2. Click on the ELSA Info tab.
3. Click on the “Generate system information for ELSA support query. . .” button.
4. You will have an option to add your own notes to the report. You can also decide where
to save the generated report.
