Any attempt to draw too much current (such as a short circuit across
edge-connector pins, or an accessory board that is not suitable for
these PCs), will cause the overload protection in the power supply to
be triggered, and the PC could fail to boot. To get out of the power
supply protection mode, remove the power cord, wait for 10 seconds,
then replace the cord.

The power supply delivers 720mA at the V standby level. This extra
current is required by the 100TX hardware layer so it can perform a
remote power-on when a magic frame is received. An older power
supply should not be used for a repair.
NOTE When the PC isturned off withthe power button on the front panel,the
power consumption falls below 5 Watts, but is not zero. The special
on/offmethod usedby this PC extends the lifetimeof the powersupply.
To reach zero power consumption in “off” mode, either unplug the PC
from the power outlet or use a power block with a switch. If the PC is
turned off, the time settings are maintained by the battery indefinitely
(until the battery runs out of power).
Environmental Specifications
Operating temperature and humidity ranges may vary depending upon
the mass storage devices installed. High humidity levels can cause
improper operation of disk drives. Low humidity levels can aggravate
static electricity problems and cause excessive wear of the disk
surface.

Main Memory
Main Memory
There are two 168-pin DIMM slots on the system board for installing
main memory; DIMM slots 1 and 2. All HP Vectra VEi 8 PC models are
supplied with one memory module (either 32 MB or 64 MB non-ECC
SDRAM) in one of the two slots, leaving the remaining slot free for
memory upgrades. Only HP memory modules are supported.
The slots can be filled in any order. Memory upgrades are available in
single 100 MHz modules of 32 MB, 64 MB, 128 MB or 256 MB modules.
Note that although the 256 MB modules provided by HP as an
accessory are ECC, the ECC feature is not used by this PC.
Replacement of thesupplied memory moduleis necessary toobtain the
512 MB maximum memory.
Processor
The PC is equipped with a single Intel Pentium II (350 or 400 MHz) or
Pentium III processor (450 or 500 MHz). The Single Edge Contact
Cartridge (SECC) packaging includes a dedicated 512K level 2 cache
and heat sink. The processor connects to the system board through a
Slot 1 (SC242) socket.
The Pentium III has the same basic core architecture as the Pentium II
but has an additional 70 multimedia-oriented instructions, bringing
enhanced performance to floating point intensive operations such as
3D and video. To fully exploit this technology, applications have to be
optimized for the Pentium III.

Setting Bus Frequency Manually
There is a 14.318 MHz crystal oscillator on the system board. This
frequency is multiplied to 100 MHz by a phase locked loop. This is
further scaled by an internal clock multiplier within the processor.

Frequency Jumpers Some VEi 8 models have a jumper block on the mother board to set
processor frequency. You only need to install a new jumper on the
jumper block if a new processor is supplied with one.

The computer may execute erratically, if at all, or may overheat, if it is
configured tooperate at a higher processorspeed than the processor is
capable of supporting. This can cause damage to the computer.
Setting the jumpers to operate at a slower speed than the processor is
capable of supporting, can still cause erratic behavior in some cases,
and would reduce the instruction throughput in others.

models. These hard drives can be provided with the PC. To see which

Some models are equipped with a 32✕Max IDE CD-ROM drive. If it
does not come with the PC, it can be purchased as an accessory. This
CD-ROM drive can play standard CD-ROM discs, conforming to optical
and mechanical standards as specified in the Red, Yellow, Green and
Orange Books.The DVD Drive below can be purchasedas an accessory.
