1 Setting Up the HP NetServer
LXr 8000
Before You Set Up Your HP NetServer
Before you set up your HP NetServer LXr8000:
• Read the Rack Installation Road Map. The Road Map shows how to set
up the entire rack system. It will alert you to issues you must consider
before installing the HP NetServer itself. The Road Map comes with the
rack.
• Read this chapter. This chapter tells how to set up and configure the HP
NetServer. It tells you what to do, and in what order. For a trouble-free
installation, read this chapter before taking the HP NetServer out of its
box.
Setup Steps
It is important that you follow the setup steps in the exact order shown below.
Skip any steps that do not apply to you.
1. Unpack the contents of the shipping box.
CAUTION The HP NetServer weighs approximately 130 pounds. At
least two people are required to lift the server. Failure to
observe this warning could result in serious injury, or damage
to the HP NetServer.
2. Verify the contents of the shipping box against the Contents Checklist
included with your HP NetServer. If anything is missing or damaged, call
your reseller.
3. Store the empty boxes and packing material in a safe place. This is
especially important if you plan to ship the HP NetServer elsewhere for
final installation.

4. If you have options to add to the HP NetServer(memory, accessory
boards, processor boards), remove the appropriate access panels from the
computer. Refer to Chapter 3.
5. Install additional processors and voltage regulator modules, if desired.
Refer to Chapter 7.
6. Install additional memory. Refer to Chapter 5.
7. Install PCI and PCI Hot Plug accessory boards. Refer to Chapter 6.
8. Reconnect all internal cables and reattach all covers and access panels.
Refer to Chapter 3.
9. Install disk drives or tape drives. Refer to Chapter 4.
10. Familiarize yourself with the HP NetServer’s controls, indicators, and
ports. Refer to Chapter 2.
11. Your next step depends on when and where you plan to complete the
installation process.
◊Do you plan to install the HP NetServer in a rack now? If so, install
the HP NetServer in the rack. (Refer to Chapter 8.) Cable the monitor,
keyboard, and mouse to the HP NetServer (Refer to Chapter 7), and
also connect mass storage, tape drives, and other components.
◊Do you plan to complete the configuration at another location? If so,
put the HP NetServer back in the packing box, finish repacking, and
ship the unit out.
◊Do you plan to configure and test the HP NetServer and other
components together before mounting them in the rack? If so, cable
the monitor, keyboard, and mouse (Refer to Chapter 8) to the HP
NetServer. Also connect mass storage, tape drives, and other
components.
12. Obtain the release history of the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM that
came with your HP NetServer, to make sure that your Navigator CD-ROM
is the latest. Refer to Chapter 10.
13. Power up the HP NetServer. Refer to Chapter 2.
14. Insert the Navigator CD-ROM, reboot, and check the Navigator
README file for important installation information. Refer to
Chapter 10.

15. Configure the HP NetServer with Configuration Assistant from the
Navigator CD-ROM. Choose the Express Configuration option. Refer to
Chapter 10.
NOTE To fully configure the HP NetServer, all the rack components
should be cabled and online (though not necessarily installed
in the rack.)
16. If you plan to ship the fully-configured rack system to a different
destination, label each cable and component. Remove all components
from the rack, including external mass storage. Repack the components in
the original packing material, and label them for shipment.
CAUTION It is critical to disassemble and rebox all electronic
components before reshipment. Electronic components
(especially hard disk drives) can sustain damage when
shipped in rack enclosures.

This chapter describes controls, indicators, and ports on the front and rear of the
HP NetServer LXr 8000.
Control Panel Buttons and Indicators
The HP NetServer’s control panel includes these controls and indicators:
•Front panel controls for power, reset, and secure mode
•LEDs for power and secure mode
•A trio of LEDs -- one red, one yellow, one green -- that provide quick
information about system status
•A two-line LCD display with its own set of screen navigation buttons.
This display provides detailed information about system status
The following illustration shows the server’s front panel, including its control
panel. The following sections explain these controls in more detail.

panel.

NOTE The HP NetServer’s front bezel includes a small plastic door
that you can pull down over the Power Button and Reset
button. During normal operation, this door can prevent
someone from accidentally powering down or resetting the
system.
Table 2-1 describes these buttons and LEDs.

Control Description
Power Button
Turns server power on and off.
Power LED Glows steady green when power is on, and flashing green
when the system is in ACPI Sleep. If the LED is dark,
system power is off.
Reset Button
Performs a system hard reset.
Secure Mode
Button
Puts the system in Secure Mode, if your system was
configured for Secure Mode. Secure Mode can include such
restrictions as keyboard lock, power button lock, and screen
blanking. The reset button and scroll keys are also disabled.
You configure Secure Mode through the server’s Setup
Utility. See Chapter 9 for details.
Secure Mode
LED Glows solid green when the system is in Secure Mode, and is
dark at all other times.

Control Panel LCD Screen and Navigation Buttons
The control panel features a two-line LCD screen that displays POST messages,
boot messages, and errors. You can also use this screen to display system
configuration information, a log of current and past error conditions, replaceable
parts information, and more.
Figure 2-3 shows the LCD and its navigation buttons. For instructions on using
this screen, see "Viewing Information on the Control Panel Display" later in this
chapter.

Server Status LEDs
Three LEDs -- one red, one yellow, and one green -- are grouped on the right
side of the control board. These three server status LEDs give you a quick idea of
the HP NetServer’s general health. The signal it gives you reflects the most
critical pending event in the system.
Figure 2-4 shows the server status LEDs, and Table 2-2 tells how to interpret
them.

LED Yellow LED Green LED Indicates This Server Status:
Off Off Off Main power is off. Server may or may not have
standby power.
Flashing Off Off A component of the server has failed. If the component
was redundant (a power supply or fan, for example),
the server may still be operating.
Off Flashing Off A condition exists which may cause the failure of one
of the server’s components.
Off Off On The server is operating normally.

Rear Panel Indicators and Ports
The HP NetServer’s rear panel includes communication ports, the AC inlet, and
the server’s three power supplies. In addition, PCI Hot Plug slots on the I/O
baseboard have their own LEDs, which are visible from the rear of the server.
Figure 2-5 shows the rear of the HP NetServer.

Power Supply Module Indicators
Each of the HP NetServer power supply modules has the indicators in Figure 2-6:

Control Description
PWR
(Power) Lights solid green when system is powered up. If the system is not powered up but is connected to AC power (so that
standby voltage is available), the LED blinks green. If there
is no AC power, the LED is dark.
PRFL
(Predictive Fail) Blinks yellow if the speed of the power supply’s internal fan falls below acceptable levels. Power supply has not failed, but
may do so soon.
FAIL
(Power Supply
Failure)
Lights solid yellow when power supply fails. Blinks yellow
when power supply is drawing more current than it should,
because of a short-circuit in the power supply or elsewhere in
the server. If the short-circuit is in the power supply, the
power supply shuts down. If the short-circuit is in the server,
the server shuts down.

NOTE Once lit, the PRFL (Predictive Fail) LED will continue to
blink yellow even if the fan speed problem is intermittent and
fan speed has again reached acceptable levels. To determine
whether fan speed is currently a problem, you must cycle
power to the power supply. The easiest way to do this is to pull
out the power supply, wait at least 15 seconds, and then
reinsert it. (You can do this during system operation, but only
if the other two power supplies are present and operating
normally.) If the power supply’s fan speed is still a problem,
the PRFL LED continues to blink. If the fan speed is now
acceptable, the PRFL LED does not light.
CAUTION If you remove a power supply, it is imperative that you wait at
least 15 seconds before reinserting it. The delay gives the
power supply’s inrush protection circuit time to reset itself. If
the circuit does not have time to reset, the supply draws a
larger than normal inrush current and may trip main circuit
breakers or UPS breakers.
