HP R12000 XR User manual

Rated at 12000 VA/12000 Watts, this on-line rack UPS R12000 XR, offers a modular architecture, where each module runs in
parallel (total of four 3KVA modules). Customers can choose to use the UPS as a 12KVA UPS, or configure it as a 9KVA UPS in
N+1 redundant mode, or 6KVA in N+2 redundant modes. This "N+x" parallel redundant architecture enables customers to adapt
to their growing power requirements, and keep their systems powered and protected against bad power. A unique patented wireless
paralleling technology built into the R12000 XR eliminates system-level single point of failure by allowing both the logic and the
power to be housed in the individual 3kVA module, and not in the enclosure as with most competitive UPSs.
With industry leading power density (12000 Watts in 10U of rack space), the R12000 XR provides the highest levels of fault
tolerance and power protection for your mission-critical enterprise solutions and rack data-centers.
Several options are offered to add flexibility and adaptability to r12000 xr applications:

When apparent power (VA) equals true power (Watts), the UPS is said to be unity rated (or power factor
correction=unity=maximum efficiency). The unity rated R12000 XR is more efficient, and provides
improved power flow and thermal management (vs non-unity rated UPSs). Also, the R12000 XR uses
online (also known as the double conversion) technology. The online UPS converts the incoming facility
AC power (including sags, surges, spikes, noise) into DC power that feeds the battery. The DC battery
output is then converted into clean, filtered, and constant AC voltage output (at a pre-set desired value),
ensuring reliable, conditioned power feeding to your connected servers and other IT equipment.

architecture
Through a combination of four 3KW/3KVA modules, the UPS R12000 XR meets rigorous redundancy
and fault tolerant requirements - where "x" is the number of reserve modules should a module fail. A
unique patented state-of-the-art wireless paralleling technology allows all the modules to function
independently of each other (each electronics module houses its own electronics and also the logic).
Should one of the modules fail then the remaining modules seamlessly redistribute the new load
requirement through an automatic load sharing process (with transparent transfer time). And since both
the logic and electronics are housed in the each of the individual 3kVA modules (and not in the
enclosure as with most competitive UPSs), this technology eliminates system-level single point of failure.
Scalable from 3KVA to 12KVA, the UPS R12000 XR allows the following "N+x" parallel redundant
configurations:
12 KW (N+0); no module in reserve
9KW (N+1); one module in reserve
6KW (N+2); two modules in reserve
3KW (N+3); three modules in reserve

Paralleling" Technology
Paralleling" TechnologyParalleling" Technology
Paralleling" Technology
With its high speed Digital Signal Processing (DSP) design, the R12000 XR enables paralleling for
redundancy with no inter-module communication. Via a patented wireless paralleling technology, all
necessary information for paralleling is available using only the modules' output power wave form. By
using a mathematical firmware approach to paralleling for redundancy, wireless paralleling eliminates
single points of failure such as in communication wiring and added circuitry between the modules.
Therefore, the 100% mathematical firmware is more reliable than traditional paralleling that uses
communication wiring between modules. The load share control algorithms maintain synchronization
and load balance by constantly making minute adjustments to variations in the output power
requirements. In a traditional parallel UPS system, load sharing required communications wiring between
the modules, which introduced single points of failure (if any part of the communication link failed, so did
the system). The wireless technology in the R12000 XR, eliminates the necessity for inter-module
communication. By eliminating communication wiring and added circuitry between the modules, the
R12000 XR provides the highest level of reliability and system availability.
Unlike traditional paralleling techniques, R12000 XR uses a unique patented wireless technology
that eliminates system level single points of failure.
By using "peer" configuration, as opposed to "master-slave" configuration, this wireless technology
ensures that each module is operating independently.
Each module functions autonomously; also, each electronics module houses its own control logic;
and the voltage in each individual battery module is individually managed (versus as just an
overall battery management).

Requirements
Customers are strongly advised to refer to the R12000 XR Site Planning Tool (available on
http://www.hp.com/products/ups
), to make sure that their site is prepared for the installation of the
R12000 XR. UPS R12000 XR requires a single phase, 200-240 VAC facility. Both the input and the
output ends of the UPS need to be hardwired by a certified electrician. In addition, any optional ERMs
and/or PDUs must be hardwired to the UPS by a licensed electrician. The unit will need a 100A circuit
with over current protection. Also, the unit weighs 420lb, so it is advised that the facility
shipping/receiving and installation teams be notified prior to the unit being delivered. This is further
detailed in the r12000 xr Site Planning tool posted on
http://www.hp.com/products/ups
.
An optional R12000 XR installation service is also available. For additional information on this service,
please refer to the Services section below.

Warranty
WarrantyWarranty
Warranty
Standard three year warranty with first year including parts and labor. HP UPSs are backed by a
standard three year limited warranty; 3 year parts, 1 year Labor, 1 year onsite. Optional UPS HP
Care Pack and packaged services are also available for purchase. You can choose the precise
level of support based on your needs, from basic to business critical.
Pre-Failure Battery Warning and Its associated Warranty.
The Pre-Failure Battery Warning is proactively detected and notified by a LED indicator light,
showing that the battery needs to be replaced. This notice is given 30 days prior to the battery
failure. This indicator provides ample time to order a spare battery (1-800-OK-COMPAQ). Avoid
storing battery spares as a back up because of short shelf life of the battery. The battery warranty
coverage is 3 years for parts. The warranty for the first year of ownership includes parts and labor.
Warranty, standard on all HP Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) units, extends the advantage of a
HP three-year limited warranty by applying it to the battery before it actually fails. Specifically, the
Pre-Failure Battery Warranty ensures that when customers receive the notification from their HP
UPS that the battery may fail, the battery is replaced free of charge under the warranty. HP
maintains the highest standards in the industry, as evidenced by the HP Pre-Failure Battery
Warranty.
In addition, HP UPSs are covered by a $25,000 equipment protection guarantee. Should your
connected equipment get damaged due to a UPS failure, then your damaged equipment is
covered to up to $25,0000. This applies only if:
A qualified electrician properly wires the UPS to utility power; UPS installation complies with all
applicable electrical and safety codes specified by the National Electrical Code (NEC); UPS is used under
normal operating conditions. Users must comply with all instructions and labels specified by HP; UPS is
not damaged by accident (other than a utility power transient), misuse, or abuse.
NOTE:
