CHAPTER 1 –INTRODUCTION
Thank you for purchasing Prodigi, the touch-controlled personal
vision assistant system from HumanWare, global leader in
assistive technologies for people who have low vision. Prodigi is a
simple, intelligent, portable, and adaptable line of products aimed
at restoring and maintaining independence for people living with
vision loss.
Prodigi Duo consists of a stationary Base and a removable
Tablet, allowing you to magnify and read documents on-the-go,
continue your favorite hobbies and activities, and carry out a wide
range of manual tasks.
Carefully read the operating and safety instructions described in
this user guide prior to using your Prodigi. If you have any
questions about your system, please contact HumanWare
Customer Service by consulting the contact information in the back of
this user guide.

SETTING UP
1. Pull the Base out of its box by holding the temporary cardboard
handle, and place it on a flat and level surface.
2. (If the screen is assembled, skip to step 5.)
Carefully take the screen out of its box and place it face down
on a flat surface. Use the 4 thumb screws to secure the screen
slider in place. Make sure the tactile HumanWare logo on the
screen slider is facing towards the top of the screen (1).

IMPORTANT: Use caution while handling the screen to avoid
scratching it.
3. Tilt the screen forward and carefully insert the screen slider into
the Base (1). Use the Torx key to tighten the 2 screws into the
Base (2). Then, apply the masking membrane over the 2
screws (3).

4. Connect the DC cable into the DC port (1). Then, insert the DVI
cable into the DVI port and tighten the 2 included screws (2).
Use the cable clip to attach the cables behind the screen (3).
IMPORTANT: The DVI cable only goes in one way. If it does
not slide in properly, flip it over.
5. The center of the screen should be at the same height as your
eyes, ideally 16 inches (40 cm) away. To adjust its position, lift
up or down, tilt forward or back, and swivel left or right.

6. Connect the Power Supply to the Power Cable. Then, connect
the cable to the Power Connector and plug it to an outlet.
7. Place the Tablet on the Docking Station, screen side up and top
edge facing towards the back. Push the two latches inward to
connect.

8. Press the Power button to power on the Base. Prodigi will take
about 30 seconds to initialize. HumanWare’s logo will appear on
the screen, followed by Prodigi’s startup screen. The Interactive
Wizard will then be launched automatically. Follow it carefully to
learn how to use your Prodigi and personalize it to your vision
needs.
CHAPTER 3 –USING PRODIGI
PERSONALIZING YOUR PRODIGI
Launched automatically the first time you power on the Base, the
Interactive Wizard is a series of exercises and questions aimed at
personalizing Prodigi to your vision and familiarizing yourself with
the simple gestures and buttons.
The Wizard is divided into 4 sections: Intro, Controls, Gestures,
and Tests. Follow each section carefully. Press Back several
times to exit the Wizard. If necessary, you can launch each
section again later on (See Chapter 6 –Using the Menu for more
information).

NAVIGATING ON YOUR PRODIGI
You can navigate on your Prodigi by performing 3 simple touch
gestures on the Base’s touchpad and on the Tablet’s
touchscreen. Here’s a short description of these gestures.
TAP
Press your finger down shortly at any location.
SWIPE
Think of it as turning a book page. Swipe
forward (to the left) or back (to the right) by
sliding and releasing your finger.
PAN
Slowly move your finger in any direction without
lifting it.

CHAPTER 4 –USING THE BASE
Reading documents is made easy with Prodigi’s Read View,
allowing you to quickly find information on a document (Spot
Reading), or sit back and relax as text is scrolled in the most
comfortable view and pace for your vision (Continuous Reading).
SPOT READING
After you complete the Interactive Wizard, Prodigi will
automatically launch the Magnifier.
Place your document in the page-size frame and remove
your hands from the viewing zone:
On the top left corner of the screen, an orange frame will
appear. This is Prodigi’s locator. You can now begin spot
reading. Move the locator by panning to quickly reach a
section of the document you want to read:

When a section of a document is magnified, pan to reach
other parts of the document.
Use the Plus-Minus keys to adjust the zoom level. To
decrease character size, press the Minus key (the one
closest to you). To increase character size, press the Plus
key (the farthest one).
Note: You can also use the Pinch and Zoom gesture to adjust
the zoom level. Decrease the distance between 2 fingers to
zoom out, and increase the distance to zoom in:
Press Back to see the locator again. This is a practical way
to locate your position on the page.
To save the document you are reading, press and hold the
Read button. The document will be kept in Prodigi’s Gallery
for future use.
To toggle between color, positive, negative, and Diamond
Edge™(for documents that contain text) contrasts, swipe on
the right edge of the touchpad:

CONTINUOUS READING
Prodigi’s Continuous Reading feature scrolls text according to
your preferences. Text can be presented in 3 different ways
(Reading Modes): it can be transformed into a single line in the
Line mode (default), a column in the Column mode, or you can
read text without losing its configuration in the Page mode.
Place your document in the page-size frame and remove
your hands from the viewing zone:
On the top left corner of the screen, an orange frame will
appear. This is Prodigi’s locator. You can move the locator
by panning to quickly reach a section of the document you
want to read. If you want to start reading from the top of the
page, do not move the locator:
To start reading, simply press Read.
To increase the reading speed, swipe forward.
To slow down the reading speed, swipe back.

To pause, tap or press Read.
To resume, tap or press Read again.
When paused, pan left or right (Line mode), up or down
(Column mode), or in any direction (Page mode) to go
forward or back in the text.
Use the Plus-Minus keys or the Pinch and Zoom gesture to
adjust the zoom level.
Press Back to stop reading and see the whole page again.
The locator will show you your new position.
To set a different Reading Mode, first press Back to stop
reading. Then, press and hold the Back button to access the
Quick Settings menu, and Swipe down to select Reading
Mode. Tap to change your Reading Mode. Press Back to
exit the Quick Settings menu.
Note: For more information about the Quick Settings menu,
see Chapter 10 –Changing your Settings.
To save the document you are reading, press and hold the
Read button. The document will be kept in Prodigi’s Gallery
for future use.
MANUAL TASKS
Prodigi’s Live View on the Base is ideal for performing a wide
range of manual tasks, such as viewing pill bottles, signing
checks, and more. The Live View allows for magnification up to
20x.
First, toggle to Live view. You can toggle between Read view
and Live view by swiping on the left edge of the touchpad:

Note: You can also activate the Live View in the Quick Settings.
Press and hold the Back button, and swipe down to select View.
Tap to select Live. Press Back to exit the Quick Settings.
You can now use the Magnifier to execute manual tasks. In
the center of the screen, you will notice Prodigi’s locator:
Move the locator over the area you wish to magnify and tap:
Pan to see other parts of the enlarged object or document.
Use the Plus-Minus keys or the Pinch and Zoom gesture to
adjust the zoom level.
Press Back to see the locator again.
Press and hold the Read button to capture and save an
image of what you are viewing. If you capture a document

that contains text, you can use the same features as in Read
view (Spot Reading and Continuous Reading).
Note: If the image is unstable while executing a manual task, you
can lock the Autofocus in the Quick Settings. Press and hold the
Back button, swipe down to select Autofocus, and tap to select
Locked.
Note: If you cannot avoid touching the touchpad while executing
a manual task, you can disable it in the Quick Settings. Press and
hold the Back button, swipe down to select Touchpad, and tap to
select Disabled.
