INTRODUCTION
The instructions in this manual describe the ONIX and ION control head operations. Some of the features discussed require a
separate purchase. Radar, AIS, Compass/Heading Sensor, Blac Box Sonar, Ethernet Switch, i-Pilot Lin , etc. require a separate
purchase. Visit our Web site at humminbird.com for the latest compatible accessories and to purchase equipment for your control
head.
GETTING STARTED
The procedures in this section describe how to get started with your control head. See your control head installation guide to
configure the unit for first time setup. Also, see Installation Information in this manual for control head configuration and networ
configuration details.
NOTE: When the ONIX and ION control head e uipment and accessories are first installed, the Setup Guide provides the prompts
to guide you through configuring the unit. The Setup Guide includes important steps to configure the control head with the
e uipment, including vessel dimensions, fuel data, transducer setup, map source selection, and offset menus. See your control
head installation guide to configure the unit for the first time.
Power On
1. Press the POWER ey.
2. Select Start Normal Mode.
3. When the first view is displayed on the screen, the control head is ready for operation.
S ar Radar Transmission
If a Radar is connected to the control head networ , use the following instructions to start radar transmission.
WARNING! The radar should be configured by a ualified radar technician after installation or e uipment repair. See Installation
Information: Configure Radar.
1. Confirm the radar power source is turned on (brea er or switch).
2. Press the POWER ey.
3. Select Radar Transmit. Tap the on/off button, or press the ENTER ey, to turn it on.

Check Sensor Reception and Connections
If y u’ve c nnected ther separate-purchase equipment t the c ntr l head netw rk, such as AIS, C mpass/Heading Sens r, Radar,
i-Pil t Link, 360 Imaging, and m re, use these instructi ns t c nfirm the equipment is detected and c mmunicating with the
c ntr l head.
1. Press the HOME key.
2. Review the t p, right c rner f the status bar.
Detected and Active: If a sens r is active and transmitting/receiving, it will be white. See the table bel w.
Connected but not Detected or Active: If a sens r is n t detected n the netw rk, r n t transmitting/receiving, it will
be c mpletely gray.
Connected but not Tran mitting/Receiving: If a sens r is detected, but is n t transmitting/receiving, the ic n will be
partially gray. In this illustrati n, the GPS receiver is detected, but it d esn’t have a GPS fix. This feature will vary with
the type f ic n represented.
3. If the sens rs are active, y ur system is ready f r use n the water.
For additional y tem tatu , select H me > Settings > Netw rk> System Inf .
If you have connected an acce ory to the control head, and the ic n is n t displaying in the system status bar, check the
installati n f the access ry and the cable c nnecti n t the c ntr l head.
To change the NMEA 2000 network or multi-control head network ource , see Set up a NMEA 2000 Network and Set up
your Humminbird Network.
Active Status Icon Sensor Icon Description
AIS AIS is n and receiving targets.
Compa The selected c mpass/heading sens r is n and heading data is being
received.
GPS The GPS receiver is detected and a GPS fix has been btained.
i-Pilot Link i-Pil t Link is c nnected, enabled, and actively navigating.
Radar The selected radar s urce is detected and transmitting.
2D Sonar The selected 2D s nar s urce is detected and pinging.
360 Imaging Sonar The 360 Imaging transducer is pinging data.
Wi-Fi Wi-Fi is n and the c nnecti n is str ng.

Review GPS Reception
In addition to th s nsor icon in th status bar, you can also ch ck th GPS r c ption status in th GPS tool. Th GPS tool provid s
two ways to vi w th sat llit s communicating with th GPS R c iv r. Y llow indicat s that th sat llit is b ing us d to d t rmin
your curr nt position. Purpl indicat s that th sat llit is b ing monitor d but not us d. Th following data is also display d:
•Position (latitud and longitud )
•GPS Fix Typ : r port d as No Fix, 2D Fix, 3D Fix, or Enhanc d. An Enhanc d fix has b n augm nt d using information from
WAAS, EGNOS, or MSAS. A 3D or Enhanc d Fix is r quir d for navigation.
•HDOP (th Horizontal Dilution of Pr cision): a GPS syst m param t r which d p nds on th curr nt sat llit configuration.
HDOP is us d to calculat th Estimat d Position Error.
