Warning: This equipment has been certified to

to Subpart J of Part 15 of FCC
rules. Only peripherals (computer input/ output
devices, tenninals, printers, etc.) certified to comply
with the Class B limits may be attached to this
computer. Operation with non-certified peripherals
is likely to result in interference to radio and TV
reception.

This equipment generates and uses radio frequency
energy and if not installed and used properly, i.e., in
strict accordance with the operating instructions,
reference manuals, and the service manual, may cause
interference to radio or television reception.

15 of
FCC Rules, which are designed to provide reasonable
protection against such interference when operated in a

• Reorient the receiving antenna.
• Relocate the equipment with respect
to the receiver.

• Plug the equipment into a different outlet so that
equipment and receiver are
on different branch
circuits.
• If peripherals not offered by mM are used with this
equipment, it is suggested
that you use shielded,
grounded cables with in-line filters,
if necessary.

Preface
The Guide to Operations manual provides you with the
necessary information to install and operate your IDM
Portable Personal Computer, and describes how
to
diagnose and correct any problems that may occur.
This manual is divided into six sections. External tabs
help you find the section you want. A description of
each section follows.
Section 1, "Introduction I Installation," provides a
brief description of the system unit, keyboard, and
display. System setup, cabling, and the power-on self
test are explained in detail.
Section 2, "Problem Determination Procedures,"
provides step-by-step instructions
to assist you in
isolating problems
that may occur.
Section 3, "Operating Your IDM Portable Personal
Computer," describes the location and operation of the
power switches, diskette drive, and display adjustments.
Section 4, "Option Installation," contains a cover
removal and replacement procedure that is used with
the option instructions that come with options you
purchase for your IDM Portable Personal Computer.
This section has an area for keeping these installation
instructions.
It also has the switch setting charts for the
system board, extender card, and memory options.

Section 5, "Moving Your IBM Portable Personal
Computer," contains all the information required to
move your system unit and options safely.
Section 6, "Keyboard Templates," contains graphic
layouts for all the keyboards available to you when
using DOS. The templates will allow you to convert
your keyboard to match various languages. This section
also contains charts of three-digit ASCII codes for each
language.

Introduction

Introduction
The IBM Portable Personal Computer is a portable
member
of the IBM Personal Computer family. It
consists of a case that has a built-in, 9-inch display, one
IBM Personal Computer Slimline Diskette Drive, a
system board, and a keyboard. The case has a handle
for carrying. The unit
can be placed in its own
protective carrying case. The base IBM Portable
Personal Computer also has a power supply
and two
IBM Portable Personal Computer option adapters (with
space available for five additional options). You can
add a color display, a printer,
an expansion unit,
additional memory, a second slimline diskette drive,
or
other options to expand your system to meet your
particular needs.
The system board has
an Intel 8088 Processor and
256K of available memory. The IBM Color/Graphics
Monitor Adapter and the IBM Diskette Drive Adapter
are installed in two of the seven expansion slots.
The keyboard, which is the primary means
of entering
data into the system, connects to the IBM Portable
Personal Computer with a 76-centimeter (30-inch)
coiled cable. The cable is stored in a compartment
on
the keyboard while the IBM Portable Personal
Computer is being carried. The keyboard attaches
to
the front of the system unit to form part of the
enclosure/ carrying case. The keyboard keys are
divided into three major sections: the typewriter area,
the numeric keypad,
and the function keys.
The power supply allows the IBM Portable Personal
Computer
to operate at either 115 Vac (volts ac) or
230 Vac. Six different line cords are available for
various power sources.
