EXPLICIT DEFINITIONS
WORD DEFINITION
RDANGER! Personal death, serious injury or an explo-
sion may occur.
RWARNING! Personal injury, fire hazard or electric
shock may occur.
CAUTION Equipment damage may occur.
NOTE
If disregarded, inconvenience only. No risk
of personal injury, fire or electric shock.
RDANGER! Use and charge only specified Icom battery
packs with Icom radios or Icom chargers. Only Icom battery
packs are tested and approved for use with Icom radios or
charged with Icom chargers. Using third-party or counterfeit
battery packs or chargers may cause smoke, fire, or cause
the battery to burst.
RWARNING! NEVER hold the radio so that the an-
tenna is very close to, or touching exposed parts of the body,
especially the face or eyes, while transmitting. The radio will
perform best if the microphone is 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 in.) away
from the lips and the radio is vertical.
RWARNING! NEVER operate the radio with a headset
or other audio accessories at high volume levels. The contin-
uous high volume operation may cause a ringing in your ears.
If you experience the ringing, reduce the volume level or dis-
continue use.
RWARNING! NEVER operate the radio while driving
a vehicle. Safe driving requires your full attention—anything
less may result in an accident.
CAUTION: NEVER use non-specified accessories and
options. Using them invalidates the transceivers FM approval.

PRECAUTIONS
CAUTION: MAKE SURE the flexible antenna and bat-
tery pack are securely attached to the radio, and that the an-
tenna and battery pack are dry before attachment. Exposing
the inside of the radio to water will result in serious damage
to the radio.
DO NOT operate the radio near unshielded electrical blast-
ing caps.
DO NOT push [PTT] when you do not actually intend to
transmit.
DO NOT operate or place the radio in direct sunlight or in
areas with temperatures below –20°C (–4°F) or above +40°C
(+104°F).
DO NOT modify the radio. The specifications may change
and then not comply with the requirements of a corresponded
regulation. The radio warranty does not cover any problems
caused by unauthorized modification.
DO NOT use harsh solvents such as benzine or alcohol
when cleaning, as they will damage the radio surfaces.
KEEP the transceiver away from the heavy rain, and Never
immerse it in the water. The transceiver is water resistant,
not waterproof.
BE CAREFUL! The radio will become hot when operating
it continuously for long periods of time.
Even when the radio power is OFF, a slight current still flows
in the circuits. Remove the battery pack or batteries from the
radio when not using it for a long time. Otherwise, the in-
stalled battery pack or batteries will become exhausted, and
will need to be recharged or replaced.
MAKE SURE to turn OFF the radio power before connect-
ing or disconnecting the supplied/optional equipment.

FCC INFORMATION
• FOR CLASS B UNINTENTIONAL RADIATORS:
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with
the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to part 15 of
the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reason-
able protection against harmful interference in a residential
installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate
radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in ac-
cordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interfer-
ence to radio communications. However, there is no guaran-
tee that interference will not occur in a particular installation.
If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or
television reception, which can be determined by turning the
equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to cor-
rect the interference by one or more of the following meas-
ures:
•Reorientorrelocatethereceivingantenna.
•Increasetheseparationbetweentheequipmentandre-
ceiver.
•Connecttheequipmentintoanoutletonacircuitdiffer-
ent from that to which the receiver is connected.
•Consultthedealeroranexperiencedradio/TVtechni-
cian for help.
CAUTION: Changes or modifications to this transceiver,
not expressly approved by Icom Inc., could void your author-
ity to operate this transceiver under FCC regulations.
INTRINSIC SAFETY
Versions of the IC-F3161T, IC-F3161S, IC-
F4161T and IC-F4161S which display the
“” marking on the label.
The approval rating for these models are;
Intrinsically safe :
Class I, II, III, Division 1,
Groups C, D, E, F, G
Nonincendive : Class I, Division 2,
Groups A, B, C, D
WARNING! NEVER charge the BP-232FM (with/with-
out the transceiver) in an explosive atmosphere. The optional
battery chargers are not approved as Intrinsically Safe.
When the transceiver is used in a hazardous area, the BP-232FM
MUST be attached, either the jack cover or HM-169IS MUST
be attached to the speaker-microphone connector.
KEEP the transceiver and the BP-232FM clean to avoid any
risk of ignition due to the build-up of electrostatic charges.
Repair of Icom radios should only be carried out by autho-
rized Icom distributors. In particular, repair of FM approved
radios can ONLY be done by Icom to maintain the intrinsi-
cally safe rating. NEVER attempt to repair an FM approved
radio. Only Icom has the repair expertise and procedures to
maintain the FM approval. Contact your Icom distributor or
authorised dealer for details.

• Time-out timer
After continuous transmission for the pre-programmed time
period, the time-out timer starts, causing the transceiver to
stop transmitting.
• Penalty timer
Once the time-out timer starts, transmission is further inhib-
ited for a period determined by the penalty timer.
DTX code channel selection
If the transceiver has [TX Code CH Select] assigned to it,
the indication can be toggled between the operating channel
