Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive
Directive 2002/95/EC—commonly known as the European Union (EU)
Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS)—sets limits on the use of
certain substances found in electrical and electronic equipment. The
intent of this legislation is to reduce the amount of hazardous chemicals
that may leach out of landfill sites or otherwise contaminate the
environment during end-of-life recycling. The Directive took effect on
July 1, 2006, and it refers to the following hazardous substances:
• Lead (Pb)
• Mercury (Hg)
• Cadmium (Cd)
• Hexavalent Chromium (Cr-V1)
• Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB)
• Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE)
According to this EU Directive, all products sold in the European Union
are fully RoHS-compliant and “lead-free.” (See our Web site,
www.broadcast.harris.com/leitch > company > environmental compli-
ance, for more information on dates and deadlines for compliance.)
Spare parts supplied for the repair and upgrade of equipment sold
before July 1, 2006 are exempt from the legislation. Equipment that
complies with the EU directive is marked with a RoHS-compliant
emblem, as shown in Figure P-1.

Preface
Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment
(WEEE) Directive
The European Union (EU) Directive 2002/96/EC on Waste from
Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) deals with the collection,
treatment, recovery, and recycling of electrical and electronic waste
products. The objective of the WEEE Directive is to assign the
responsibility for the disposal of associated hazardous waste to either
the producers or users of these products. Effective August 13, 2005,
producers or users are required to recycle electrical and electronic
equipment at end of its useful life, and may not dispose of the
equipment in landfills or by using other unapproved methods. (Some
EU member states may have different deadlines.)
In accordance with this EU Directive, companies selling electric or
electronic devices in the EU will affix labels indicating that such prod-
ucts must be properly recycled. (See our Web site, www.broadcast.har-
ris.com/leitch > company > environmental compliance, for more
information on dates and deadlines for compliance.) Contact your local
sales representative for information on returning these products for
recycling. Equipment that complies with the EU directive is marked
with a WEEE-compliant emblem, as shown in Figure P-2.

personal injury or loss of life—high voltage is present.
Uninsulated dangerous voltage within the product’s enclosure
may be sufficient to constitute a risk of electric shock to persons.
CAUTION: Identifies conditions or practices that can result in
damage to the equipment or other property. Important operating
and maintenance (servicing) instructions are included in the
literature accompanying the product.

Chapter 1
Introduction
Overview
The HOMS+OP+module is a Coarse Wavelength Division
Multiplexing (CWDM) SDI-to-optical converter and fiber optic
multiplexer. The OHDS+OP+is a CWDM optical-to-SDI converter
and fiber optic demultiplexer. These modules are designed for high-end
multi-channel transport of video in limited “fiber-line” applications.
The following topics are described in this chapter:
•“Product Description” on page 2
•“Module Descriptions” on page 6
•“Signal Flow” on page 8

Chapter 1: Introduction
Product Description
General Description
The HOMS+OP+and OHDS+OP+modules are designed for use in
any SD and/or HD environment in which SDI and DVB-ASI signals
must cross distances that exceed the normal capabilities of professional
video cable. The modules incorporate a passive filter design and feature
high optical isolation to ensure low crosstalk. HOMS+OP+and
OHDS+OP+modules are fully hot-swappable from the front of the
FR6802+XF frame.
HOMS+OP+ Main Features
HOMS+OP+features include the following:
• Automatic cable equalization on inputs
• Remote control and monitoring via CCS-compliant software and
control panels of the following:
• Automatic and manual reclocking rate settings and reporting
(143, 177, 270, 360, 540 MB/s; and 1.485 Gb/s)
• Status reports and alarms for SDI presence
• Status reports and alarms for input signal lock
• Status reports and alarms for laser function
• Automatic reclocking bypass when data cannot be locked to one of
six set reclocking rates
• Identical input/output polarity for ASI compliance
• Automatic laser protection against irregular power output or
excessive laser bias current
• Standard SMPTE SC/PC optical connector, supporting ST/PC and
FC/PC available options1
• ITU-T G.694.2 standard CWDM wavelength compliance
• No requirement for low-water-peak fiber
• 4/8/12/16-channel expandability
• Capability for studio-transmitter link (STL) and transmitter-studio
link (TSL) applications
1 Contact your Harris sales representative to order ST/PC and FC/PC options.

Chapter 1: Introduction
Typical Broadcast and Production Applications
HOMS+OP+and OHDS+OP+products can be used in broadcast,
cable, production, educational, and auditorium applications where a
low-cost method of distributing serial digital video signals is required.
Typical applications include sending signals from a studio, remote
truck, or other production facility to the transmission site/facility. Other
applications include sending signals within one broadcast organization
with buildings remotely located across a large campus area or across
town.
