1 About this manual
This document applies to the software version stated on the title page. Documents for
other software versions are available from our sales department.
Product names may occur in the document, which are added for identification
purposes only and belong to the respective owner of the rights.
1.1 Target groups
This instruction manual is intended for operators and technically qualified personnel
with experience in leak detection technology and the integration of leak detectors in
leak detection systems. In addition, the installation and use of the device require
knowledge of electronic interfaces.

2 Safety
2.1 Intended use
The T-Guard2 is a helium leak detector. You can use the device to quantify leaks on
test objects.
The T-Guard2 works with simple chambers under atmospheric pressure. No vacuum
chamber is required.
Since measurements are usually carried out in normal air, the smallest verifiable leak
rate is 1 × 10-6 mbar l/s. This depends on the volume of the measurement chamber
and the measurement time. For practical reasons, the leak rate is usually between 1 ×
10-4 and 1 × 10-2 mbar l/s.
The device may only be opened by INFICON service.
2.1.1 Incorrect usage
Avoid the following, non-intended uses:
• Operate the device only according to this instruction manual.
• Comply with application limits, see "Technical Data".
• Use outside the technical specifications, see "Technical Specifications"
• Installation by untrained or unauthorised personnel.
• Suctioning of liquids into the device
• Using the device in potentially explosive atmospheres
• Test of test objects that contain liquids.
2.2 Duties of the operator
• Read, observe, and follow the information in this manual and in the work
instructions provided by the owner. This concerns in particular the safety and
warning instructions.
• Always observe the complete operating instructions for all work.
• If you have any questions about operation or maintenance that are not answered
in this manual, contact customer service.
2.3 Owner requirements
The following notes are for companies or any person who is responsible for the safety
and effective use of the product by the user, employees or third parties.

Safety-conscious operation
• Operate the device only if it is in perfect technical condition and has no damage.
• Only operate the device properly in accordance with this instruction manual, in a
safety and risk conscious manner.
• Adhere to the following regulations and observe their compliance:
– Intended use
– Universally valid safety and accident prevention regulations
– International, national and local standards and guidelines
– Additional device-related provisions and regulations
• Only use original parts or parts approved by the manufacturer.
• Keep this instruction manual available on site.
Personnel qualifications
• Only instructed personnel should be permitted to work with and on the device. The
instructed personnel must have received training on the device.
• Make sure that authorized personnel have read and understood the instruction
manual and all other applicable documents.

2.4 Dangers
The measuring instrument was built according to the state-of-the-art and the
recognized safety regulations. Nevertheless, improper use may result in risk to life and
limb on the part of the user or third parties, or damage to the unit or other property
may occur.
Dangers from electric
power
The device is operated with electrical voltages of up to 24 V. Inside the device there
are voltages that are considerably higher. There is a danger to life from the contact of
conductive parts inside the device.
• Disconnect the device from the power supply prior to any installation and
maintenance work. Make sure that the electric power supply cannot reconnected
without authorization.
• Before starting the leak test, disconnect electrically operated test objects from the
power supply.
The device contains electric components that can be damaged from high electric
voltage.
• Make sure before connecting to the power supply that the supply voltage is 24 V
+/- 16 % (stabilized!).
Hazards due to liquids
and chemicals
Liquids and chemical substances can damage the instrument.
• Do not suck up liquids with the instrument.
• Never try to find toxic, caustic, microbiological, explosive, radioactive or other
harmful substances with the device.
• Only operate the device in a dry environment.
• Only use the device away from areas with a risk of explosions.
• No smoking. Do not subject the device to open fire and avoid sparking.

4 Description
4.1 Function
Function and setup of the device
The T-Guard2 can verify and quantify helium using a Wise Technology™ Sensor.
A fore pump, which is an available accessory, provides constant pressure and flow at
the Wise Technology™ Sensor.
During a measurement, outside air is sucked in through the reference inlet. This
allows the natural helium content of the air at the measurement location to be
measured. This measurement value influences the calculation of the test result.
Wise™ Technology
Sensor
The Wise Technology™ Sensor consists of a glass housing, which is locked with a
quartz membrane. The quartz membrane is permeable only for helium.
The pressure in the interior of the glass housing is measured by a highly sensitive
measurement system. The pressure is proportional to the helium concentration of the
supplied air and the air extracted from the measuring chamber.

The thermal circuit breaker trips in case of wrong polarity or if the current exceeds 7 A
for a longer period of time. After you have eliminated the source of the error, you can
switch on the thermal circuit breaker again by pressing the button.

Interface description
1. Power supply unit connection
The positive pole is marked with “1+” and the negative pole with “2+”. The other 2
pins have no function. For more information see Electrical data [}21].
2. PROFIBUS connection (optional)
This device can be controlled using a PROFIBUS.
3. Control unit connection (CONTROL UNIT)
The control unit, which is an available accessory, is connected here,, see
Connecting an external control unit [}30].
4. PLC interface (PLC IN/OUT)
The interface enables communication with a PLC. Some functions of the device
can be controlled from the outside and measurement results and device states of
the T-Guard can be transmitted to the outside.
The T-Guard has 6 configurable digital PLC inputs and 8 configurable digital PLC
outputs.
5. Analog recorder output (RECORDER)
The device has 2 separate configurable analog recorder outputs.
6. Status LEDs
The 5 status LEDs provide information on the device various operating modes.
– LED
Lights up when the device is switched on.
– LEDs 1–4
Displays the status of the configurable digital outputs 1-4.
– LED 2
LED 2 is red and lights up – unless configured otherwise – in the event of an
error or a warning.

9. Fuse
The fuse blows in case of wrong polarity or if the current exceeds 7 A for a longer
period of time. After the error has been resolved, the fuse can be switched back
on again by pressing the button.

Measurement and
reference line
Along with the device, you receive 2 identical lines with a length of 0.5 m with a filter.
One line is used to connect the measurement chamber to the device, the other sucks
in reference air, see Settings for the measurements [}51].

Control unit connection cable
Use this cable to connect the control unit to the T-Guard2.
Connector mated set
The connector mated set contains Phoenix connectors, with which you can modify the
following cables:
• PLC
• Analog recorder
Measurement and reference line, long
Lines with lengths of 0.5m, 1.0m and 2.0m are available as accessories.
Filter set
The filter set consists of 2 filters for the lines. The filters must be replaced regularly.

4.3.1 Control unit
You can operate the device via an external control unit. There are two versions of the
control unit – one for table-top operation and another for rack installation.

4.3.4 Fore pump

The fore pump sucks the air from the measurement chamber and guides it to the T-
Guard2. The fore pump is double-stage, brushless and operates at a supply voltage of
24 V DC.
4.3.5 Measurement and reference line
Lines with lengths of 0.5m, 1.0m and 2.0m are available as accessories.
