orenterdataonthetouchscreen use onlythestylistpro-
videdwithyour computeroruseyourfinger.The

trastsettings.
Backlight
Yourhand-heldcomputerdisplaycomesequippedwitha
backlight.Backlightingthedisplayhelpswhen using your
hand-heldcomputerindarkroomsorduringearlyorlate
hoursonthejob.
Backlightingprovidesagreatbenefitindarkconditions.
Backlightingdoes,however,reducebatterylife,therefore,
turnoff thebacklightwhendoneusing.Youcancontrolthe
amountoftimethebacklightingremainsonthroughthe
CONFIG.SYSparametersettings,oryourparticularap-
plication.
Battery
"NOTE:It isimportant tocharge yourhand-heldcomputerforatleast14
hoursbeforeyou useit the first time.Thisensuresthatboththe
backup batteryand the main batterypack arefully charged.
Thishand-heldcomputerusesa 910 mAhourlithiumion
rechargeablemainbatterypack.Yourhand-heldcomputer
cancheckbatterycapacityby variousmethods. One,the
batterypackhasfourLEDsthatwill displayremainingca-
pacitywhentwo ofthecontactsaretouchedat thesame
time.More onthisinSection2onpage2-9.Asecondmeth-

odwhichyourhand-heldcomputer canbeconfiguredin-
cludesaprogramcalledDOSGAS. DOSGASgivesyouthe
capacityofyourbatteryfrom0--100%withanicononyour
displaythatlookslikea battery(see Figure1-4onpage
1-9).
Ifyourhand-heldcomputergoesintoashutdownmodebe-
cause oflowbatterycondition,dataisprotectedbythe
backupbattery.Yourhand-heldcomputer containstwo100
mAhourvanadiumlithiumbackupbatteries.Thebackup
batterychargesitself from themainpackoracharging
sourcesoitisconstantlyreadytotake overdataprotection.

Thisuser’sguidewill occasionallyusetheterm “cycles”
whenpresentingrechargeablebatteryinstructions.Cycles,
arethenumberoftimestherechargeablebatterypackcan
bechargedand discharged duringthelife ofbattery.The
LithiumIonrechargeablebatterydesignshouldgiveyou
approximately500 cyclesofuse.Therearenoguarantees
onthisnumberbecauseitdependsgreatlyon howthebat-
terypackisusedandcaredfor.
Memory
Three typesofmemoryareavailablewiththishand-held
computer:
"MainMemoryDRAM
"FlashROM
"PC Cards
MainMemory
StandardmainmemoryDRAM configurationis2mega-
bytes(MB),thiscanbe extendedto4,8,or16 MBs.Main
memorywasorderedat thetimeyourunitwaspurchased.
Youareabletoupgradetoalargermemorysizebyhavinga
newmemoryboardinstalledatyourCustomerSupport
Center.
Themainmemoryisprotectedbythebackupbatterydur-
inglowmainbatteryconditionsorwhenthemainbattery
packisremoved.
FlashROM
FlashROMstorestheBIOSandDOSfirmwareforyour
hand-heldcomputer.Applications storedinflashROMare
copiedintoDRAMforexecution.
PC Cards
DifferentbrandsofPCcardscanbeusedinyourhand-held
computer.Memorycardsareavailableinavarietyofsizes

andtypes.CheckwithyourSalesRepresentative orSys-
temEngineerforspecificoptions.
Yourhand-heldcomputerisequippedwithtwoPCcard
slots.TheseslotscanbeusedwithPCmemorycardsfor
storage ofdata,muchlikeafloppydiskdrive onaPC.PC
cardslotscanalsobeusedformodems,radios,andother
optionsastheybecomeavailable.
Youcan use oneTypeII cardineachdriveat thesametime.
IfusingaTypeIII card,itonlyworksindriveA(lower).
However,youcan notuseaTypeIII andaTypeII cardat
thesametime.TypeIII cardsincludesometypesofdisk
drivesandradios.
[Gold] (Shift) Key
Hold downand press desiredgold(shifted)keyfunctions.
Continuetohold downthe[GOLD]keyforeachshiftedkey
strokeyouwishtomake.
[1/0]Suspend and ResumeKey
Inordertoconservepoweryourhand-heldcomputermay
automaticallysuspendwhentherehasbeen noactivityfor
asetperiodoftime.Thistimeisdeterminedbythe
parametersyousetusing yourapplicationsoftware,
AUTOEXEC.BAT,orCONFIG.SYSparameters.
Toforceasuspend,press thekeydefinedasthesuspend
key.Toresume operation,press the[1/0]key.Additionally,
pressingthereleasebuttononthebatterypackdoorforces
asuspend.Thisprotectsagainstlosingdatawhenremoving
thebatterypack.
