Gently close the battery holder. Never force the battery holder closed.
If the holder does not close easily, the battery is probably upside down.
1. Remove the tab from the flat, positive (+)
side of the battery. Wait at least one minute
for the battery to reach full power before
using (or testing) the battery.
2. Using a fingernail gently pull the battery
holder to the side. Place the battery in the
battery holder. Make sure the flat, positive (+)
side of the battery is facing up.
Your battery size will vary depending on the Diplomat Series model
you have. You will find the correct size needed enclosed with your
Diplomat hearing aid.

Insert & Remove Diplomat Hearing Aid
To insert:
1. Hold your hearing aid so the sound outlet
points towards your ear canal.
2. Gently push the hearing aid into your ear
canal and rotate until it locks into place.
3. Try using a mirror the first few times.
To remove:
1. Push backwards on your outer ear and slip
your finger behind your hearing aid.
2. Rotate your hearing aid forward as you pull out.
IMPORTANT: Check the fit of your Diplomat before wearing it outside.
If a hearing aid doesn’t fit well, it can fall out of your ear!
Fingertip Volume Control – Change the volume by pressing one
finger against the volume control (as if you were pointing at it).
How to adjust the volume
RIGHT EAR
Increase volume:
Twist forward, towards
the front of you.
Decrease volume:
Twist backwards, towards
the back of you.
LEFT EAR
Increase volume:
Twist forward, towards
the front of you.
Decrease volume:
Twist backwards, towards
the back of you.
Your Diplomat hearing aid should have a secure, comfortable fit.
If your hearing aid works its way out of your ear or is uncomfortable,
call Hearing Help Express and talk with a licensed hearing aid specialist.
1-800-221-2099
Diplomat hearing aids can easily be modified to correct any problems
with fit or sound quality.

61-800-221-2099 • www.HearingHelpExpress.com
Your Diplomat hearing aid may contain one or more of the
following options. Placement of each option may vary depending
on Diplomat model.
Toggle Switch Controls – flip up to activate, flip down to de-activate.
• Telephone Switch – This switch allows you to
hear only the sounds from the telephone. Using
it eliminates feedback (squeal) on the phone. When
the telephone switch is “on” the microphone is
“off.” Flip the switch back when finished with
your phone conversation or you will only hear
a static sound.
Diplomat Hearing Aid Options
Toggle Switch-
placement may vary
on each model
Screw-type Controls
Rotating the control clockwise will increase the
effect of the option. Most controls only rotate
3/4 turn.
Always use a plastic screwdriver when making
adjustments (included).
• Tone Control (low cut) – Adjusting the control clockwise will
reduce the amount of low frequency amplification. You may find
it helpful if you have a constant problem with background noise.
• Feedback Reduction Control (high cut) – Adjusting the control
clockwise will reduce the amount of high frequency amplification.
This can help reduce feedback or “squeal”.
• Maximum Output Control (MOP) – Adjusting the control
clockwise will reduce only very loud sounds but not affect
moderate sounds like conversation. This can reduce loud
irritating sounds like the clatter of dishes.

Vent Plugs
Some custom hearing aids are made with a vent opening. A
vent is simply a hole drilled through the hearing aid. Allowing
air to flow through provides a more natural sound and prevents
a stuffed-up feeling. Feedback (squeal) can occur if the vent
opening is too large. You can change the size of the opening
by inserting different plugs.
Use vent plugs if you:
1. Experience constant feedback (squeal) –
Insert a vent plug with a smaller opening
2. If you experience a stuffed-up feeling or it
sounds like you are talking in a barrel –
insert a vent plug that has a larger opening
or use none at all.
If a vent plug is already in place, remove before inserting another vent plug.
Vent Plugs
To insert:
1. Select one of the vent plugs and remove from the plastic tree.
2. Insert the narrow end of the plug into the top of the vent
hole (located on the same side as the volume control and
battery door, NOT the end of the aid that goes into your
ear canal.) Insert the plug until it will go no further.
To remove:
1. Grasp inserted vent plug with tweezers and gently pull out.
You may need to experiment with different plugs until you find what works best for you.
How to use Vent Plugs

81-800-221-2099 • www.HearingHelpExpress.com
Talking on the telephone
You can use your custom aid while talking
on the telephone. Hold the handset slightly
away from your ear and/or hold it at a slight
angle to prevent feedback (whistling). This
may take a little practice.
Note: Your hearing aid(s) may feedback (squeal)
if it is set too high, a hand or object is near it, or
when inserting and removing it.
If your Diplomat was made with a telephone switch see page 6.
Open the battery door when not wearing your custom hearing aid.
Any moisture inside your hearing aid can then evaporate, extending
the life of your custom hearing aid.
Always clean your hearing aid at the beginning of each day prior
to using it. Without regular cleaning, wax can build up and prevent
your custom hearing aid from working properly. Wax is more easily
removed after not using your hearing aid for a few hours.
How to clean your hearing aid:
1. Wipe off the outside of the hearing aid with a soft cloth.
2. Gently brush across the microphone
opening using the enclosed cleaning
brush.
3. Using the wax loop – gently insert the
wax loop into the sound opening at
the back of the custom made hearing aid.
Twist the loop and pull out. Repeat if
necessary to remove dried dirt and ear wax.
Wax
loop
Caution: Do not force a needle
or longer wax loop into the hearing
aid. Too much pressure could
damage components inside the hearing aid.
Care and Cleaning

1-800-221-2099 • www.HearingHelpExpress.com 9
IMPORTANT CARE INSTRUCTIONS
BEGINNING THE DAY: After
showering, apply all lotions,
creams, hairspray, perfume
and cologne BEFORE putting on
your Diplomats. Water and such
sprays can damage hearing aids. And please remember, your hearing aids are
sensitive and don’t like extreme heat or cold. Never place your Diplomat in
water. If it becomes wet, immediately remove the battery and let your
Diplomat stand in a dry place or DryAid dehumidifier for several hours.
NEVER use heat (blowdryer, oven, microwave, etc.) to dry your Diplomat.
AT THE END OF THE DAY: Open the battery door when not wearing your
hearing aid. Any moisture inside your hearing aid can then evaporate,
extending the life of your Diplomat. With the battery door open, you can be
assured your hearing aid is off and not squealing. A squealing hearing aid can
attract pets which have been known to chew on hearing aids and damage
them beyond repair. Even better, remove the battery and store your
Diplomat overnight in a DryAid dehumidifier.
1. Start Slowly – Begin by using your new hearing aid a few hours a day
while you are alone. If you're not used to wearing a hearing aid, you will
probably notice many sounds you have not heard in a while. And while you
may enjoy the sounds of birds again, other sounds like crackling paper and
the refrigerator running may take some time to get used to. With practice you
should be able to focus on the sounds you want to hear and ignore the rest.
Hearing aids will not restore your hearing, but they absolutely can help.
2. Read Out Loud – Your own voice will sound strange at first. Try reading out
loud for 15 minutes a day to get used to the sound of your voice.
3. Practice Listening to One Voice – Start in a quiet environment listening to
the radio or your favorite TV show. Then practice listening with one friend or
family member at a time.
4. Listen and Talk in Small Groups – Next try talking with a small group of
people, first in a quiet setting and then in a noisier environment. Remember,
most people have difficulty understanding in loud places with background
noise. So, be patient and keep practicing. Your understanding should
improve with time.

Troubleshooting your Diplomat
Service
1.Let your ear get used to the
Diplomat. Wear it for only a few
hours at a time for the first few days
or less if causing soreness.
2. If soreness persists, stop using the
Diplomat and call for assistance.
If your hearing aid is: WHISTLING, SQUEALING (FEEDBACK)
If your hearing aid is: DAMAGED
1. Call for detailed instructions. 1-800-221-2099.

Precautions: A hearing aid is a precision electronic device and
as such, it requires the care in use and handling that you would
afford any fine piece of equipment. The following precautions
are not meant to discourage normal use of your hearing aid, but
are suggested to insure quality performance and long life from
your hearing aid.
Do not drop or throw your hearing aid, as this may damage
internal components. Do not expose your hearing aid or batteries
to excessive heat, such as from stove tops, hair dryers, heat
lamps or your automobile rear shelf or glove compartment. Do
not immerse your hearing aid in water or other liquids, or wear it
while bathing, showering or swimming. If your hearing aid is to
be stored for any length of time, be sure to remove the battery
and store both in a cool, dry place. Your hearing aid has been
constructed from the finest materials, using the latest engineering
technology; however, in rare instances, an individual may exhibit
signs of skin irritation, allergic reaction, or accelerated accumulation
of cerumen (earwax). If this occurs, consult your physician.
Keep new and used batteries out of reach of children
and those with diminished mental capacity. Batteries, if
consumed, can be harmful. Consult your physician
immediately and call the National Battery Hotline
collect (202) 625-3333.
Federal law permits an adult to purchase hearing aids by mail.
Important Notice for Prospective Hearing Aid Users:
Good health practice requires that a person with a hearing loss
have a medical evaluation by a licensed physician (preferably a
physician who specializes in diseases of the ear) before purchasing
a hearing aid. Licensed physicians who specialize in diseases of
the ear are often referred to as otolaryngologists, otolotists or
otorhinolaryngologists. The purpose of a medical evaluation is to
assure that all medically treatable conditions that may affect
hearing are identified & treated before the hearing aid is purchased.
Following the medical evaluation, the physician will give you a
written statement that your hearing loss has been medically
evaluated and that you may be considered a candidate for a hearing
aid. The physician will refer you to an audiologist or a hearing
aid dispenser, as appropriate, for a hearing aid evaluation. The
audiologist or hearing aid dispenser will conduct a hearing aid
evaluation to assess your ability to hear with and without a hearing
aid. The hearing aid evaluation will enable the audiologist or
dispenser to select and fit a hearing aid to your individual needs.
If you have reservations about your ability to adapt to amplification,
you should inquire about the availability of a trial, rental or purchase
option program. Many hearing aid dispensers now offer programs
that permit you to wear a hearing aid for a period of time for a
nominal fee, after which you may decide if you want to purchase
the hearing aid. Federal law restricts the sale of hearing aids to
those individuals who have obtained a medical evaluation from
a licensed physician. Federal law permits a fully informed adult
to sign a waiver statement declining the medical evaluation for
religious or personal beliefs that preclude consultation with a
physician. The exercise of such a waiver is not in your best health
interest and its use is strongly discouraged.
Children with Hearing Loss: In addition to seeing a physician
for a medical evaluation, a child with a hearing loss should be
directed to an audiologist for evaluation and rehabilitation since
hearing loss may cause problems in language development and
the educational and social growth of a child. An audiologist is
qualified by training and experience to assist in the evaluation
and rehabilitation of a child with a hearing loss.
Warning to Hearing Aid Dispensers: A hearing aid dispenser
should advise a prospective hearing aid user to consult promptly
with a licensed physician (preferably an ear specialist) before
dispensing a hearing aid if the hearing aid dispenser determines
through inquiry, actual observation, or review of any other
available information concerning the prospective user, that the
prospective user has any of the following conditions:
Warning Signs:
1. Visible congenital or traumatic deformity of the ear.
2. History of active drainage from the ear within the previous
90 days.
3. History of sudden or rapidly progressive hearing loss
within the previous 90 days.
4. Acute or chronic dizziness.
5. Unilateral hearing loss of sudden or recent onset within
the previous 90 days.
6. Audiometric air-bone gap equal to or greater than
15 decibels at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz and 2,000 Hz.
7. Visible evidence of significant cerumen accumulation or
a foreign body in the ear canal.
8. Pain or discomfort in the ear.
NOTE: Special care should be exercised in selecting and fitting a
hearing aid whose maximum sound pressure level exceeds 132
decibels because there may be a risk of impairing the remaining
hearing of the hearing aid user.
Hearing with Your New Amplification The world will seem
noisier at first, but in time, you should become accustomed to your
new listening experiences, learn to hear speech more clearly, and
enjoy many of the special sounds you may have been missing.
Obtaining maximum benefit from your new hearing aid(s)
requires effort and practice on your part. Your new hearing aid(s)
will not restore normal hearing and will not prevent or improve
hearing impairment resulting from organic conditions. In most
cases, infrequent use of the hearing aid(s) will not permit you to
obtain full benefit from it. Follow the program recommended by
your hearing professional. The use of your hearing instrument(s)
is only part of your hearing rehabilitation, and you may need
supplemental auditory training and instructions in lipreading.
