ATC1510 Advanced Terminal Unit Controller
Installation Guide
About This Product
The Advanced Terminal Unit Controller (ATC) runs
custom, freely-programmed applications, and provides
the inputs and outputs required to monitor and control
a wide variety of HVAC/R equipment.
The ATCs operate as BACnet® Application Specific
Controllers (B-ASC) and integrate into Johnson
Controls® and third-party BACnet systems.
Communication Protocols
You can configure the field bus communication
protocol in the ATC as a standard BACnet MS/TP device
or an N2 protocol device. You can use the Controller
Configuration Tool (CCT) to switch the communication
protocol. Switchable communication protocols provide
a cost-effective upgrade and modernization path for
customers with existing N2 controllers.
Compliance Information
This equipment has been tested and found to comply
with the limits for a Class A digital device pursuant to
Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed
to provide reasonable protection against harmful
interference when this equipment is operated
in a commercial environment. This equipment
generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency
energy and, if not installed and used in accordance
with the instruction manual, may cause harmful
interference to radio communications. Operation
of this equipment in a residential area may cause
harmful interference, in which case the users will
be required to correct the interference at their own
expense.
This Class (A) digital apparatus meets all the
requirements of the Canadian Interference-Causing
Equipment Regulations.
Installation
Observe the following guidelines when installing an
ATC:
• To minimize vibration and shock damage to the
controller, transport the controller in the original
container.
• Verify that all parts shipped with the controller.
• Do not drop the controller or subject it to physical
shock.

Mounting the Controller
This section describes how to mount the ATC.
1. Horizontally mount a 20 cm (8 in.) section of 35
mm (1.3 in.) DIN rail.
2. On the back of the controller, extend the two
mounting clips as illustrated.
3. Position the controller so that the two extended
mounting clips are facing downwards, and place
the controller on the DIN rail.
4. Push the bottom mounting clips up to secure the
controller on the DIN rail.

Wiring
The following procedure describes how to wire the
ATC. The ATC ports and buses are described in Figure 6.

1. Wire the FC Bus Terminal Block. The ATC features
a blue, removable, 4-terminal FC Bus block that
fits into a board-mounted jack. Wire the FC bus as
shown in Figure 1.
Note: Controllers can be daisy-chained by
inserting two wires into each connection.

2. Wire the SA Bus Terminal. The ATC features a
brown, removable, 4-terminal SA Bus block that
fits into a board-mounted jack. Wire the SA Bus as
shown in Figure 2.
Note:
- SA bus devices can be daisy-chained
by inserting two wires into each
connection.
- The SA BUS PWR terminal on the ATC
supplies 15 VDC, up to 210 mA. The
SA BUS PWR terminal can be used to
connect the 15 VDC power leads on
the SA Bus to power other devices
that are connected in a daisy chain
configuration. If a device has an SA
BUS PWR output, do not connect it to
the ATC SA BUS PWR output.

3. The SA Bus port on the controller is an RJ-12, 6-
position modular jack that provides a connection
for the Mobile Access Portal (MAP) Gateway, the
VAV Balancing Tool, specified network sensors, or
other SA Bus devices with RJ-12 plugs. Wire the SA
Bus port as shown in Figure 3.
Note: The SA port is connected internally to
the SA Bus terminal block.

4. Wire the Power Supply Terminal Block. The ATC
uses a 240 VAC, +/-10% supply power terminal
two-pin, three-position, red connector.
a. Connect the supply wires to the red plug-
in terminal block as shown in Figure 4.
b. Insert the plug-in terminal block into the
ATC. For the location of the ATC power
input, see Figure 6.

Maximum Cable Length versus Load Current
For this system to operate correctly, the maximum
wire length is 137.2 m (450 ft) and the wire cross-
sectional area is 1.5 mm2 (16 AWG) to 0.5 mm2 (22
AWG).
Input and Output wiring guidelines
Table 2 and Table 3 provide information and guidelines
about the functions, ratings, and requirements for the
controller input and output terminals, and guidelines
for determining proper wire sizes and cable lengths.
In addition to the wiring guidelines in Table 2 and Table
3, observe these guidelines when wiring controller
inputs and outputs:
• Run all low-voltage wiring and cables separate from
high-voltage wiring.
• All input and output cables, regardless of wire size
or number of wires, should consist of stranded,
insulated, and twisted copper wires.
• Shielded cable is not required for input or output
cables.
• Shielded cable is recommended for input
and output cables that are exposed to high
electromagnetic or radio frequency noise.
• Inputs/outputs with cables less than 30 m (100 ft)
typically do not require an offset in the software
setup. Cable runs over 30 m (100 ft) may require an
offset in the input/output software setup.

The following table defines cable length guidelines for the various wire sizes that may be used for wiring low-
voltage (<30 V) input and outputs.

Communications bus and supply power wiring guidelines
Table 4 provides information about the functions, ratings, and requirements for the communication bus and
supply power terminals. The table also provides guidelines for wire sizes, cable types, and cable lengths for wiring
the controller's communication buses and supply power.
In addition to the guidelines in Table 4, observe the following guidelines when you wire an FC or SA bus and the 24
VAC supply power:
• Run all low-voltage wiring and cables separate from high-voltage wiring.
• All FC and SA bus cables, regardless of wire size, should be twisted, insulated, stranded copper wire.
• Using shielded cable is best practice for all FC and SA bus cables.
• Refer to the MS/TP Communications Bus Technical Bulletin (LIT-12011034) for detailed information regarding wire
size and cable length requirements for FC and SA buses.
