2. Use
2.1. Proper use
T e pumps are exclusively intended for transferring gases and
vapors.
Owner's responsibility
Only install and operate t e pumps under t e operating parameters
and conditions described in C apter 4, Tec nical data.
Make sure t at t e installation location is dry and t e pump is
protected against rain, splas , ose and drip water.
Before using a medium, c eck w et er t e medium can be trans-
ferred danger-free in t e specific application case.
Before using a medium, c eck t e compatibility of t e materials of
t e pump ead, diap ragm and valves wit t e medium.
Only transfer gases w ic remain stable under t e pressures and
temperatures occurring in t e pump.
2.2. Improper use
T e pumps may not be operated in an explosive atmosp ere.
T e pumps are not suitable for transferring dusts.
T e pumps are not suitable for transferring liquids.
Pumps designed to create eit er a vacuum or an overpressure
must not be used for t ese two purposes simultaneously.
An overpressure must not be applied to t e suction side of t e
pump.

3. Safety
Note t e safety precautions in sections 6. Installation and
connection, and 7. Operation.
T e pumps are built according to t e generally recognized rules of
tec nology and in accordance wit t e occupational safety and
accident prevention regulations. Nevert eless, dangers can result
during t eir use w ic lead to injuries to t e user or ot ers, or to
damage to t e pump or ot er property.
Only use t e pumps w en t ey are in a good tec nical and proper
working order, in accordance wit t eir intended use, observing t e
safety advice wit in t e operating instructions, at all times.
Make sure t at only trained and instructed personnel or specially
trained personnel work on t e pumps. T is especially applies to
assembly, connection and servicing work.
Make sure t at t e personnel as read and understood t e operat-
ing instructions, and in particular t e "Safety" c apter.
Observe t e accident prevention and safety regulations w en
performing any work on t e pump and during operation.
Do not expose any part of your body to t e vacuum.
Open ousing parts wit notice sticker (see fig. 1) only after
separating mains plug from power source.
W en transferring dangerous media, observe t e safety regula-
tions w en andling t ese media.
Be aware t at t e pumps are not designed to be explosion-proof.
Make sure t e temperature of t e medium is always sufficiently
below t e ignition temperature of t e medium, to avoid ignition or
explosion. T is also applies for unusual operational situations.
Note t at t e temperature of t e medium increases w en t e pump
compresses t e medium.
Hence, make sure t e temperature of t e medium is sufficiently
below t e ignition temperature of t e medium, even w en it is
compressed to t e maximum permissible operating pressure of t e
pump. T e maximum permissible operating pressure of t e pump
is stated in t e tec nical specifications (see section 4).
If necessary, consider any external sources of energy, suc as
radiation, t at may add eat to t e medium.
In case of doubt, consult t e KNF customer service.
Store all replacement parts in a protected manner and dispose of
t em properly in accordance wit t e applicable environmental
protection regulations. Observe t e respective national and inter-
national regulations. T is especially applies to parts contaminated
wit toxic substances.

6. Installation and connection
Only install and operate t e pumps under t e operating parameters
and conditions described in c apter 4, Tec nical data.
Observe t e safety precautions (see c apter 3).
6.1. Installation
Before installation, store t e pump at t e installation location to
bring it up to room temperature.
See c apter 4, Tec nical data, for t e dimensions of pump.
Install t e pump so t at t e motor fan can intake sufficient
cooling air.
Make sure t at t e installation location is dry and t e pump is
protected against rain, splas , ose and drip water.
C oose a safe location (flat surface) for t e pump.
Protect t e pump from dust.
Protect t e pump from vibrations and jolts.
6.2. Connection
Only connect components to t e pump w ic are designed for
t e pneumatic data of t e pump (see section 4).
If t e pump is used as a vacuum pump, safely disc arge t e
pump ex aust at t e pump’s pneumatic outlet.
A marking on t e pump ead s ows t e direction of flow.
1. Remove t e protective plugs from t e pneumatic connectors of
t e pump.
2. Mount accessory silencer/filter (w ere applicable):
If t e pump is used as a vacuum pump, mount t e silencer at
t e pressure side if necessary. If t e pump is used as a com-
pressor (not permitted wit series N 035.3) mount t e filter at
t e suction side if necessary.
− Unscrew corresponding ose connector from pump ead.
− Screw silencer/filter into pump ead.
3. Connect t e suction line and pressure line (tube inner diameter
9 mm).
4. Lay t e suction and pressure line at a downward angle to
prevent condensate from running into t e pump.
5. Insert t e power cable’s plug into a properly installed
s ockproof socket.

Operation Diap ragm Pumps N 035.18
14 Translation of original Operating Instructions, Englis , KNF 121228-121398 04/14
7. Operation
7.1. Preparing for Start-up
Before switc ing on t e pump, observe t e following points:
Operational requirements
Pump All oses attac ed properly
Fan openings not blocked
Specifications of t e power supply correspond wit t e
data on t e pump’s type plate.
T e pump outlet is not closed or constricted.
Tab. 9
7.2. Starting
Only operate t e pump under t e operating parameters and
conditions described in c apter 4, Tec nical data.
Make sure t e pump is used properly (see section 2.1).
Make sure t e pump is not used improperly (see section 2.2).
Observe t e safety precautions (see c apter 3).
WARNING
Hazard of t e pump ead bursting due to excessive
pressure increase
Do not exceed max. permissible operating
pressure (see section 4).
Monitor pressure during operation.
If t e pressure exceeds t e maximum permissi-
ble operating pressure, immediately s ut down
pump and eliminate fault (see c apter 9. Trou-
bles ooting).
Only t rottle or regulate t e air
or gas quantity in
t e suction line to prevent t e maximum permis-
sible operating pressure from being exceeded.
If t e air or gas quantity in t e pressure line is
t rottled or regulated, make sure t at t e maxi-
mum permissible operating pressure of t e
pump is not exceeded.
Excessive pressure (wit all of t e related azards) can be
prevented by placing a bypass line wit a pressure-relief valve
between t e pressure and suction side of t e pump. For furt er
information, contact our tec nical adviser.
Wit t e pump at a standstill, open pressure and suction lines
to normal atmosp eric pressure.
Pump standstill

Diap ragm Pumps N 035.18 Operation
Translation of original Operating Instructions, Englis , KNF 121228-121398 04/14 15
WARNING
Automatic starting can cause personal injury and
pump damage
W en t e operation of t e pump is interrupted by t e
t ermal switc , t e pump will restart automatically
after cooling down.
After triggering of t e t ermal protection or in t e
event of power failure, remove t e pump’s mains
plug from t e socket so t at t e pump cannot
start uncontrollably.
Attempt work on t e pump only if t e pump is
separated from mains power.
7.3. Switching pump on and off
Switching pump on
T e pump may not start up against pressure or vacuum during
switc -
on. T is also applies in operation following a brief power
failure. If a pump starts against pressure, it may block. T is
activates t e t ermal switc , and t e pump switc es off.
Make sure t at no pressure or vacuum is present in t e lines
during switc -on.
Switc on pump wit mains switc (see fig. 2, 3 or 4, position
3).
Switching off the pump/removing from operation
W en transferring aggressive media, flus t e pump prior to
switc -off to increase t e service life of t e diap ragm (see
section 8.2.1).
Switc off pump wit mains switc (see fig. 2, 3 or 4, position
3).
Open pressure and suction lines to normal atmosp eric pres-
sure.
