3. Important Instructions
This manual provides important information required for the proper operation of the KISS 4U Short V2 platform!
This chapter contains instructions which must be observed when working with the KISS 4U Short V2 platform.
3.1. Warranty Note
Due to their limited service life, parts which by their nature are subject to a particularly high degree of wear (wearing
parts) are excluded from the warranty beyond that provided by law. This applies to batteries, for example.
3.2. Exclusion of Accident Liability Obligation
Kontron Embedded Computers shall be exempted from the statutory accident liability obligation if the user fails to
observe the included document: “General Safety Instructions for IT Equipment” the hints in this manual or eventually the
warning signs label on the device.
3.3. Liability Limitation / Exemption from the Warranty Obligation
In the event of damage to the device caused by failure to observe the included document “General Safety Instructions for
IT Equipment”, the hints in this manual or eventually the warning signs label on the device, Kontron Embedded
Computers shall not be required to honor the warranty even during the warranty period and shall be exempted from the
statutory accident liability obligation.

4. Safety Instructions
Please consider the instructions described in the included “General Safety Instructions for IT Equipment”.
Caution:
Energy hazards >240 VA are present inside the chassis!
Activities such as system expansion with expansion cards, or maintanance have to be carried-out by
qualified personnel familiar with the associated dangers!
When used as intended the KISS 4U Short V2 platform is to operate only closed.and locked.
Only when the cover is properly installed, secured with the knurled screws on the rear and the cover
fastening screw on the front, and the access door is locked with the key, it is ensured that the user doesn’t
have access to the internal parts of the KISS 4U Short V2 platform, loaded with hazardous energy.
4.1. Operation of Laser Source Devices

The optional CD ROM and DVD drives contain light-emitting diodes (classified in accordance with IEC 60825-1:2007:
LASER CLASS 1) and therefore must not be opened.
If the enclosure of such a drive is opened, invisible laser radiation is emitted. Do not allow yourself to be exposed to this
radiation.
The laser system meets the code of Federal Regulations 21 CFR, 1040 for the USA and the Canadian Radiation Emitting
Devices Act, REDR C 1370.

4.2. Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
A sudden discharge of electrostatic electricity can destroy static-sensitive devices or micro-circuitry. Proper packaging
and grounding techniques are necessary precautions to prevent damage. Always take the following precautions:
1. Transport boards in static-safe containers such as boxes or bags.
2. Keep electrostatic sensitive parts in their containers until they arrive at the ESD-safe workplace.
3. Always be properly grounded when touching a sensitive board, component, or assembly.
4. Store electrostatic-sensitive boards in protective packaging or on antistatic mats.
4.2.1. Grounding Methods
The following measures help to avoid electrostatic damages to the device:
1. Cover workstations with approved antistatic material. Always wear a wrist strap connected to workplace as well as
properly grounded tools and equipment.
2. Use anti-static mats, heel straps, or air ionizes to give added protection.
3. Always handle electrostatic sensitive components by their edge or by their casing.
4. Avoid contact with pins, leads, or circuitry.
5. Turn off power and input signals before inserting and removing connectors or connecting test equipment.
6. Keep work area free of non-conductive materials such as ordinary plastic assembly aids and styrofoam.
7. Use field service tools such as cutters, screwdrivers, and vacuum cleaners which are conductive.
8. Always place drives and boards PCB-assembly-side down on the foam.
4.3. Instructions for the Lithium Battery
The installed motherboard is equipped with a Lithium battery. When replacing the lithium battery, please follow the
corresponding instructions in the chapter 9.3 “Replacing the Lithium Battery”.
Caution
Danger of explosion when replacing with wrong type of battery. Replace only with the same or equivalent
type recommended by the manufacturer. The lithium battery type must be UL recognized.
Do not dispose of lithium batteries in general trash collection. Dispose of the battery according to the
local regulations dealing with the disposal of these special materials, (e.g. to the collecting points for
dispose of batteries).

4.4. FCC Statement
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the
FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is
operated in commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not
installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful interference to radio communications.
Operation of this equipment in residential area is likely to cause harmful interference in which case the user will be
required to correct the interference at his own expense.

4.5. Electromagnetic Compatibility (EU)
This product is intended only for use in industrial areas. The most recent version of the EMC guidelines (EMC Directive
2004/108/EC) and/or the German EMC laws apply. If the user modifies and/or adds to the equipment (e.g. installation of
expansion cards) the prerequisites for the CE conformity declaration (safety requirements) may no longer apply.

This is a class A product. In domestic environment this product may cause radio interference in which case the user may
be required to take adequate measures.

5.1. Type Label and Product Identification
The type label (product designation, serial number) and the inspection status label of your KISS 4U Short V2 platform are
located on the right side of the device.

The “xxx”-Group is replaced by two-digit or three-digit figures,
representing the installed CPU board.
“y” is replaced by a single letter (A through Z) representing the power

6. Product Description
The KISS 4U Short V2 platform expands the Kontron KISS computer line. KISS 4U Short V2 is a scalable 4U (19") platform,
that is equipped with a motherboard, supporting various system configurations (refer to “KISS 4U Short V2 System -
Configuration Guide” on our website). The flexible customer-specific hardware system configuration and the robust
construction with excellent mechanical stability of the KISS 4U Short V2 platform offer the superior qualities of a
computer designed for operation in harsh industrial environment.
The KISS 4U Short V2 platform is designed to be operated in horizontal position as desktop unit or installed into a
19" rack.
Versions of the KISS 4U Short V2 platform:

The system can be equipped with up to four drive bays (depending on the system configuration):
L1 and L2: two 5.25" front accessible drive bays
L3: one internal 3.5" drive bay or one front accessible slim drive.
L4: one 3.5" front accessible drive bay

The power button of the KISS 4U Short V2 platform is located on the front side behind the front access door. The LED
indicators are located on the front side and consist of a “power LED” and a “hard disk activity LED”.
Two system fans are installed at the front side of the unit. These are attached to the system by means of a fan slide-in
module. The fan slide-in module simplifies the installation and removal of these components, even during operation.
The washable filter mat, which protects your system against dust and dirt, is located on the front side of the system. This
filter mat can be replaced during operation.
The type label is attached to the right side of the device.
The KISS 4U Short V2 platform may be operated in horizontal position only.
When powering on the KISS 4U Short V2 platform, make sure that the air intake and exhaust openings
are not obstructed by objects.

You can convert your rackmount system to a desktop unit by removing the two handle brackets (one handle bracket on
each side).

6.1.1. Interfaces on the Front Side
6.1.1.1. USB Interfaces
The KISS 4U Short V2 platform is equipped with two USB interfaces on the front side (see Fig. 9, pos. 5 and Fig. 10, pos.
2). You can connect various USB devices to these two USB 2.0 interface connectors.

When USB devices are connected to the USB ports on the front of the device, the front access panel cannot
be closed and locked.
6.1.2. Controls and LED Indicators
6.1.2.1. Power Button
The power button (see Fig. 9, pos. 3 and Fig. 10, pos. 1) is located on the front side of the system, behind the front access
door. Press this button to turn the system on or off. Please observe the setting options for the power button in the BIOS-
Setup.
Caution!
Please observe that the ON/OFF switch of the power supply unit does not disconnect the platform from
the mains power source.
Even when the system is turned off via the power button (Fig. 9, pos. 3 and Fig. 10, pos. 1) or via the
ON/OFF switch (Fig. 12, pos. 3) of the power supply unit, there is still a standby-voltage of 5 VSb on the
motherboard.
The unit is only completely disconnected from the mains when the power cord is disconnected either
from the mains power source or the unit. Therefore, the power cord and its connectors must always
remain easily accessible.
The outlet of the AC power source must be located near to the device and be easily accessible.
Please observe the option in BIOS Setup / Chipset Configuration / South Bridge Configuration / Restore
on AC Power Loss with the option settings: Power On/ Power Off/Last State.
Standard configuration of KISS 4U Short V2 platform is delivered with the default setting “Power On”.

6.1.2.2. Power LED and HDD Activity LED
The LED indicators (see Fig. 9, pos. 14) of the KISS 4U Short V2 platform are located on the front side, behind the front
access door.

This LED (Fig. 11, pos. 1) lights up green when the system is turned on by the On/Off switch of the
power supply unit.
Prerequisite:
The system has to be connected to an appropriate AC mains power source and turned on by the On/Off
switch of the power supply unit.
HDD LED
(orange)
This LED (Fig. 11, pos. 2) lights up during hard disk activity.
6.1.3. Front Access Door
The securing lock mechanism (Fig. 7, pos. 5 and Fig. 9, pos. 4) located at the access door allows you to protect your
system from unauthorized use. When the access door is locked, the cover of the KISS 4U Short V2 system can not be
removed, and the drives, filter mat holder and power button are not accessible.
The key should be kept somewhere where it is not accessible to unauthorized persons.
If USB devices are connected to the USB ports on the front of the device, the front access panel cannot
be closed and locked.
6.1.4. Cover fastening screw on the front side
The cover fastening screw (Fig. 9, pos. 13) secures the cover to the chassis on the front side.
To remove the cover of the KISS 4U Short V2 platform, the following knurled screws have to be loosened:
The cover fastening screw (Fig. 9, pos. 13 and Fig. 18) on the front side
The knurled screws (Fig. 12, pos. 8 and Fig. 19) on the rear side
To close the chassis of the KISS 4U Short V2 platform properly, the cover has to be attached and the
abovementioned screws have to be fastened.
6.1.5. Filter Mat and Filter Mat Holder
The filter mat and the filter mat holder (Fig. 9, pos. 15) are located behind the air grilles of the front access door
(Fig. 7, pos. 3). The filter mat holder is mounted to the fan slide-in module (Fig. 9, pos. 12) via a knurled screw
(Fig. 27, pos. 5) and two positioning latches (Fig. 27, pos. 6). A filter mat is inserted in the filter mat holder (refer to
Fig. 28 and Fig. 29). This filter mat protects your system against dust and dirt (see chapter 9.1 “Cleaning the Filter Mat”).

6.1.6. Fan Slide-in module
The two system fans are integrated in a user-friendly, replaceable fan slide-in module (hot-swap) (see chapter 7.3 “Fan
Slide-in Module and Temperature Sensor”). The fan slide-in module (Fig. 9, pos. 12) can be replaced during operation
(see chapter 9.2 “Replacing the System Fans”).
6.1.7. Drive Bays
Depending on the ordered system configuration, your system can be equipped with up to three drives on the front side
and one internal drive (see Fig. 9, pos. 6, 7, 8 and 10):
